The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or batteryoperated (cordless) power tool.

1) WORK AREA SAFETY

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. 3) PERSONAL SAFETY

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables

better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dustrelated hazards.

4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5) BATTERY TOOL USE AND CARE

a) Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is

suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack. Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire. When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire. Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery, avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

6) SERVICE

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. Additional Safety Instructions for Drills

• Wear ear protectors. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.
• Use auxiliary handles supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal injury.
• Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. WARNING: Shock hazard. Do not allow

any liquid to get inside charger. Electric shock may result. CAUTION: Burn hazard. To reduce the risk of injury, charge only DEWALT rechargeable batteries. Other types of batteries may burst causing personal injury and damage. CAUTION: Under certain conditions, with the charger plugged in to the power supply, the exposed charging contacts inside the charger can be shorted by foreign material. Foreign materials of a conductive nature such as, but not limited to, steel wool, aluminum foil, or any buildup of metallic particles should be kept away from charger cavities. Always unplug the charger from the power supply when there is no battery pack in the cavity. Unplug charger before attempting to clean.

• DO NOT attempt to charge the battery pack with any chargers other than the ones in this manual. The charger and battery pack are specifically designed to work together.
• These chargers are not intended for any uses other than charging DEWALT rechargeable batteries. Any other uses may result in risk of fire, electric shock or electrocution.
• Do not expose charger to rain or snow.
• Pull by plug rather than cord when disconnecting charger. This will reduce risk of damage to electric plug and cord.
• Make sure that cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or otherwise subjected to damage or stress.
• Do not use an extension cord unless it is absolutely necessary. Use of improper extension cord could result in risk of fire, electric shock, or electrocution.
• Do not place any object on top of charger or place the charger on a soft surface that might block the ventilation slots and result in excessive internal heat. Place the charger in a position away from any heat source. The charger is ventilated through slots in the top and the bottom of the housing.
• Do not operate charger with damaged cord or plug — have them replaced immediately.
• Do not operate charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged in any way. Take it to an authorized service center.
• Do not disassemble charger; take it to an authorized service center when service or repair is required. Incorrect reassembly may result in a risk of electric shock, electrocution or fire.
• Disconnect the charger from the outlet before attempting any cleaning. This will reduce the risk of electric shock. Removing the battery pack will not reduce this risk.
• NEVER attempt to connect 2 chargers together.
• The charger is designed to operate on standard 230V household electrical power. Do not attempt to use it on any other voltage. This does not apply to the vehicular charger.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

Chargers Your DE9116 charger accepts DEWALT NiCd and NiMH battery packs ranging from 7.2 V to 18 V. The DE9135 charger accepts 7.2 – 18 V NiCd, NiMH or Li-Ion batteries.

ENGLISH These chargers require no adjustment and are designed to be as easy as possible to operate. Important Safety Instructions for All Battery Packs Charging Procedure When ordering replacement battery packs, be sure to include catalog number and voltage. Consult the chart at the end of this manual for compatibility of chargers and battery packs.

DANGER: Electrocution hazard.

1. Plug the charger (12) into an appropriate outlet

before inserting battery pack.

2. Insert the battery pack into the charger. The red

(charging) light will blink continuously indicating that the charging process has started.

3. The completion of charge will be indicated by the

red light remaining ON continuously. The pack is fully charged and may be used at this time or left in the charger. The battery pack is not fully charged out of the carton. Before using the battery pack and charger, read the safety instructions below. Then follow charging procedures outlined.

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS

• Do not charge or use battery in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Inserting or removing the battery from the charger may ignite the dust or fumes. Charging Process

• Charge the battery packs only in DEWALT chargers. Refer the table below for the state of charge of the battery pack.

• • •• •• •• Automatic Refresh The automatic refresh mode will equalise or balance the individual cells in the battery pack at its peak capacity. Battery packs should be refreshed weekly or whenever the pack no longer delivers the same amount of work. To refresh your battery pack, place the battery in the charger as usual. Leave the battery pack for at least 8 hours in the charger. Hot/Cold Pack Delay When the charger detects a battery that is too hot or too cold, it automatically starts a Hot/Cold Pack Delay, suspending charging until the battery has reached an appropriate temperature. The charger then automatically switches to the pack charging mode. This feature ensures maximum battery life.

DEEP DISCHARGE PROTECTION

The battery pack is protected against deep discharging when it is used in the tool.

• Do not store or use the tool and battery pack in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 40˚ C (105° F) (such as outside sheds or metal buildings in summer).

DANGER: Electrocution hazard. Never

attempt to open the battery pack for any reason. If battery pack case is cracked or damaged, do not insert into charger. Electric shock or electrocution may result. Damaged battery packs should be returned to service center for recycling.

WARNING: Never attempt to open the

battery pack for any reason. If battery pack case is cracked or damaged, do not insert into charger. Do not crush, drop or damage battery pack. Do not use a battery pack or charger that has received a sharp blow, been dropped, run over or damaged in any way (i.e., pierced with a nail, hit with a hammer, stepped on). Damaged battery packs should be returned to service center for recycling. CAUTION: When not in use, place tool on its side on a stable surface where it will not cause a tripping or falling hazard. Some tools with large battery packs will stand upright on the battery pack but may be easily knocked over. ENGLISH

SPECIFIC SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR NICKEL CADMIUM

(NiCd) OR NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE (NiMH)

• Do not incinerate the battery pack even if it is severely damaged or is completely worn out. The battery pack can explode in a fire.
• A small leakage of liquid from the battery pack cells may occur under extreme usage or temperature conditions. This does not indicate a failure. However, if the outer seal is broken: a. and the battery liquid gets on your skin, immediately wash with soap and water for several minutes. b. and the battery liquid gets into your eyes, flush them with clean water for a minimum of 10 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. (Medical note: The liquid is 25-35% solution of potassium hydroxide.)

SPECIFIC SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR LITHIUM ION

• Do not incinerate the battery pack even if it is severely damaged or is completely worn out. The battery pack can explode in a fire. Toxic fumes and materials are created when lithium ion battery packs are burned. Battery Pack (fig. A) BATTERY TYPE The DC987 and DC988 operate on 18 volt battery packs. The DC984 operates on 14.4 volt battery packs. The DC980 and DC981 operate on 12 volt battery packs. Storage Recommendations

1. The best storage place is one that is cool and

dry away from direct sunlight and excess heat or cold.

2. Long storage will not harm the battery pack or

charger. Under proper conditions, they can be stored for 5 years or more. Labels on Charger and Battery Pack In addition to the pictographs used in this manual, the labels on the charger and the battery pack show the following pictographs: Read instruction manual before use.

• If battery contents come into contact with the skin, immediately wash area with mild soap and water. If battery liquid gets into the eye, rinse water over the open eye for 15 minutes or until irritation ceases. If medical attention is needed, the battery electrolyte is composed of a mixture of liquid organic carbonates and lithium salts. Battery charging

• Contents of opened battery cells may cause respiratory irritation. Provide fresh air. If symptoms persists, seek medical attention. Hot\cold pack delay

WARNING: Burn hazard. Battery liquid

may be flammable if exposed to spark or flame. Battery Cap (fig. B) A protective battery cap is supplied to cover the contacts of a detached battery pack. Without the protective cap in place, loose metal objects could short circuit the contacts, causing a fire hazard and damaging the battery pack. Battery charged Battery defective Do not probe with conductive objects. Do not charge damaged battery packs Use only with DEWALT battery packs, others may burst, causing personal injury and damage. Do not expose to water.

1. Take off the protective battery cap before placing

the battery pack in the charger or tool. Have defective cords replaced immediately.

2. Place the protective cap over the contacts

immediately after removing the battery pack from the charger or tool. Charge only between 4 °C and 40 °C.

WARNING: Make sure the protective

battery cap is in place before storing or carrying a detached battery pack. Discard the battery pack with due care for the environment.

Always check that the battery pack voltage corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. Also make sure that the voltage of your charger corresponds to that of your mains. Your DEWALT charger is double insulated in accordance with EN 60335; therefore no earth wire is required. DO NOT use under humid conditions or in presence of flammable liquids or gases. These drills are professional power tools. DO NOT let children come into contact with the tool. DANGER:

• Should your mains plug need replacing and you are competent to do this, proceed as instructed below. If you are in doubt, contact an authorized DEWALT repair agent or a qualified electrician.
• Disconnect the plug from the supply.
• Cut off the plug and dispose of it safely; a plug with bared copper conductors is dangerous if engaged in a live socket outlet.
• Only fit 13 Amperes BS1363A approved plugs fitted with the correctly rated fuse (1).
• The cable wire colours, or a letter, will be marked at the connection points of most good quality plugs. Attach the wires to their respective points in the plug (see below). Brown is for Live (L) (2) and Blue is for Neutral (N) (4).
• Before replacing the top cover of the mains plug ensure that the cable restraint (3) is holding the outer sheath of the cable firmly and that the two leads are correctly fixed at the terminals crews. ENGLISH Selecting the Operating Mode or Adjusting the Torque (fig. D)

The collar of this tool has a wide range of positions for the adjustment of the torque to suit the size of the screw and the workpiece material. For torque adjustment, refer to the section "Screwdriving".

• Select the drilling mode or torque by aligning the symbol or number on the collar (5) with the indicator (16) on the housing.

DC981/DC984/DC988 The percussion drills can be used in the following operating modes:

WARNING: NEVER use a light socket.

NEVER connect the live (L) or neutral (N) wires to the earth pin marked E or Using an Extension Cable An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use an approved extension cable suitable for the power input of your charger (see technical data). The minimum conductor size is 1 mm2; the maximum length is 30 m. When using a cable reel, always unwind the cable completely. Auto-spindle Lock The auto-spindle lock is engaged when the transmission is stationary. The chuck sleeve can easily be turned with one hand while the other supports the unit. Assembly and Adjustment

WARNING: Prior to assembly and

adjustment, always remove the battery pack. Always switch off the tool before inserting or removing the battery pack.

WARNING: Use only DEWALT battery

packs and chargers. Inserting and Removing Bits (fig. A & C)

• Open the chuck by turning the sleeve (15) counterclockwise and insert the bit shank.
• Place the bit in the chuck as far as it will go and lift slightly before tightening.
• Tighten firmly by turning the sleeve clockwise.
• To remove the bit, proceed in reverse order. Rotary drilling: for steel, wood and plastics Percussion drilling: for masonry Forward/reverse Slider (fig. E)
• To select forward or reverse rotation, use the forward/reverse slider (2) as shown (see arrows on tool).

WARNING: Always wait until the motor

has come to a complete standstill before changing the direction of rotation. Three-gear Selector (fig. F) Your tool is fitted with a three-gear selector (6) to vary the speed/torque ratio. 1 low speed/high torque 2 medium speed/medium torque 3 high speed/low torque For speed rates, refer to the technical data.

WARNING: Do not change gears at full

speed or during use. Instructions for Use

WARNING:

• Always observe the safety instructions and applicable regulations.
• Be aware of the location of pipework and wiring.
• Apply only a gentle pressure to the tool.

ENGLISH Switching On and Off (fig. A & E)

• To run the tool, press the variable speed switch (1). The pressure exerted on the variable speed switch determines the tool speed.
• To stop the tool, release the switch.
• To lock the tool in the off position, move the forward/reverse slider (2) to the central position. Screwdriving (fig. A)
• Select forward or reverse rotation using the slider (2).
• Set the collar (4) to position 1 and begin screwdriving (low torque).
• If the clutch ratchets too soon, adjust the collar to increase the torque as required. Drilling (fig. A)
• Select the drilling mode using the collar (4).
• Select forward rotation. Drilling in Metal
• Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are cast iron and brass which should be drilled dry. Cleaning

WARNING: Blow dirt and dust out of the

main housing with dry air as often as dirt is seen collecting in and around the air vents. Wear approved eye protection and approved dust mask when performing this procedure.

WARNING: Never use solvents or other

harsh chemicals for cleaning the nonmetallic parts of the tool. These chemicals may weaken the materials used in these parts. Use a cloth dampened only with water and mild soap. Never let any liquid get inside the tool; never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid.

CHARGER CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: Shock hazard. Disconnect
