Frequently Asked Questions - XSMALL PLUS SAECO

How to start the machine for the first time?
Fill the water tank with fresh water and the bean hopper with coffee beans. Plug in the machine, press the ON/OFF button (16). Place a container under the steam wand, turn the selector (17) to the hot water position to prime the circuit. Wait for the rinsing cycle to finish. The machine is ready when the temperature LED (19) is solid on.
How to adjust coffee grind?
Use the provided key to gently turn the pivot inside the bean hopper, only when the grinder is running. Turn one notch at a time and brew 2-3 coffees to see the difference. The settings range from 1 (coarse) to 5 (fine).
How to program coffee quantity in a cup?
Place a cup under the dispenser. Press and hold the desired button (14 or 15); the LED (20) blinks. Release the button when the desired quantity is reached. The machine remembers this volume for future dispenses.
How to prepare a cappuccino?
Fill a container 1/3 with cold milk. Place the steam wand (with Pannarello for the Plus model) into the milk. Turn the selector (17) to the steam position. Froth the milk with slow up-and-down movements. Stop the steam by returning the selector to the central position.
What to do if the coffee does not foam?
Check the coffee type: use fresh coffee beans, not caramelized. If the grind is too coarse, adjust it to a finer setting (section 5.2). Wait for the machine to complete automatic adjustment (Saeco Adapting System) after a few brews.
How to clean the brewing unit?
Turn off the machine and unplug it. Remove the grounds tray, open the service door. Press the PUSH button and remove the brewing unit. Wash it with warm water without detergent. Lubricate the slides with the provided grease every 500 coffees approximately. Reinstall by pushing without pressing PUSH.
How often to descale the machine?
Every 1 to 2 months, or as soon as the water flow decreases. Use the specific SAECO descaling solution. Never use vinegar. Follow the descaling cycle described in the manual (section 10).
What does the rapid blinking of the temperature LED mean?
Indicates that the machine is too hot to brew coffee (after steam use). To cool down, place a container under the steam wand, turn the selector to hot water position and dispense water until the LED becomes solid again.
Why is the machine not dispensing coffee?
Check that the water tank is full and the circuit is primed (section 4.3). Ensure the bean hopper contains beans and the grounds tray is not full. Clean the brewing unit if necessary. If the problem persists, contact an authorized service center.
How to use very large cups?
Remove the drip grid (6) after checking that the drip tray (8) is empty. Place the large cup directly on the tray. After use, replace the grid.

4.5 Rinse/Self-Cleaning Cycle

This cycle rinses the coffee circuits with fresh water.

The rinse/self-cleaning cycle is carried out:

  • When the machine is turned on (with cold boiler)
    • After priming the water circuit (with cold boiler)
  • During the warm-up phase (if a coffee product has been brewed)
  • When the machine is turned off (if a coffee product has been brewed)

SAECO XSMALL PLUS - Rinse/Self-Cleaning Cycle - 1

Note: Place a container beneath the dispensing spout (5) before the dispensing starts

(Fig. 8).

A small amount of water will be dispensed which will rinse and heat all the machine components; in this phase the lights will flash counter-clockwise.

Wait for the cycle to finish automatically. You can stop dispensing as well, by pressing either coffee button.

5 ADJUSTMENTS

The machine that you have bought allows for certain adjustments that will permit you to use it to its full potential.

5.1 Saeco Adapting System

Coffee is a natural product and its characteristics may change according to its origin, blend and roast. The Saeco coffee machine is equipped with a self-adjusting system that allows the use of all types of coffee beans available on the market (not including flavored or carmelized).

  • The machine automatically adjusts itself in order to optimize the extraction of the coffee, ensuring perfect compression of the beans to obtain a creamy espresso coffee that will release all the aromas, regardless of the type of coffee used.
  • The optimization process is a learning process that requires the brewing of a certain number of coffees to allow the machine to adjust the compactness of the ground coffee.
  • Attention should be given to special blends, which require grinder adjustments in order to optimize the extraction of the coffee (see section 5.2).

5.2 Coffee Grinder Adjustment

Warning! The grinder adjustment knob, inside the coffee bean hopper, must be turned only when the grinder is working. Do not pour ground and/or instant coffee into the coffee bean hopper.

Do not insert any material other than coffee beans into the hopper. The grinder contains moving parts that may be dangerous. Therefore, do not insert fingers and/or other objects. Turn off the machine by pressing the ON/OFF button and remove the plug from the socket before carrying out any type of operation inside the coffee bean hopper. Do not pour coffee beans when the coffee grinder is working.

The machine lets you make slight adjustments to the coffee grinder to adapt it to the kind of coffee used.

To make any adjustment, use the pin inside the coffee bean hopper; this must be pressed and turned using only the grinder adjustment key provided.

(Fig. 27) - Press and turn the pin one notch at a time. You must brew 2-3 coffees before you will taste a difference.

(Fig. 28) - The reference marks inside the coffee bean hopper indicate the grind setting; there are 5 different grind settings to choose from with the following references:

1 - Coarse Grind

2 - Fine Grind

5.3 Adjusting the Amount of Coffee Brewed

The machine allows you to adjust the amount of brewed coffee according to your tastes and/or the size of your cups.

Each time you press and release a coffee button, the machine brews a pre-programmed amount of coffee. This amount may be reprogrammed to your taste. Each button may be individually programmed for a specific brew setting.

As an example, the following procedure describes the programming of the small coffee button (14), which is normally associated with espresso coffee.

• (Fig. 10A) - Place a cup beneath the dispensing head.
- (Fig. 12) - Press and hold down the small coffee button; the large coffee button blinks during this phase.

- (Fig. 12) - Release the small coffee button when the amount of coffee in the cup reaches the desired level.

At this point the small coffee button is programmed; each time it is pressed and released, the machine will brew the same amount of coffee that was just programmed.

5.4 Stand-By

The machine is designed for energy saving.

After 60 minutes of inactivity, the machines turns off automatically.

To turn the machine on again, simply press the ON/OFF button (16); in this case the machine will go through the rinse cycle only if the boiler is cold.

5.5 Large Cups

Most cups on the market can be used with this coffee machine.

If you would like to use an exceptionally large cup, remove the grill (6).

Make sure that the drip tray (8) is clean and empty before removing the grill and positioning the cup (see section 9).

(Fig. 11) - Remove the grill (6) and place the cup in the special support.

Replace the grill (6) when finished.

6 COFFEE BREWING

Note: Should the machine not brew coffee, make sure that the water tank (9) contains water.

Before brewing coffee, make sure that the green temperature light (19) is steady on and that the water tank and the coffee hopper are full.

Keep the control dial (17) in the "()” position, during the coffee brewing cycle.

  • (Fig. 10 - Fig. 11) - Place 1 or 2 cups under the dispensing spout (5).
  • (Fig. 12) - To brew coffee, press and release: the small coffee button for an espresso coffee; the large coffee button for a long coffee.

- To dispense 1 cup of coffee, press the button once. To dispense 2 cups of coffee, press the button twice.

In this operating mode, the machine automatically grinds and doses the correct amount of coffee. Brewing two coffees requires two grinding cycles and two brewing cycles, which the machine carries out automatically.

• After the prebrewing cycle, coffee begins to dispense out of the dispensing spout (5).
- Coffee brewing stops automatically when the pre-programmed level is reached; however, it is possible to interrupt coffee brewing by pressing the button initially pressed.

The machine is adjusted to brew a true Italian espresso coffee. This feature may slightly lengthen the brewing time, allowing the intense flavor of the coffee to develop fully.

7 DISPENSING HOT WATER

Warning: Dispensing may be preceded by short sprays of hot water, and scalding is possible. The hot water/steam wand may reach high temperatures. Do not touch it with bare hands; use the appropriate handle only.

- Before dispensing hot water, make sure that the green temperature light (19) is on.

When the machine is ready, proceed as follows:

  • (Fig. 7) - Place a container under the hot water/steam wand (Pannarello for Plus version) (10).
  • (Fig. 9) - Turn the control dial (17) clockwise to set it to the "◇" position.
  • Fill the cup with hot water to the level desired; to stop hot water dispensing, turn control dial (17) counterclockwise back to the "()" position. The machine returns to the normal operating mode.

Occasionally, after turning the control dial (17) hot water may not be dispensed and the temperature light (19) may blink slowly. To obtain a flow of hot water, simply wait until the temperature light (19) stops blinking and remains steady.

8 STEAM DISPENSING / CAPPUCCINO

Steam may be used to froth milk for a cappuccino, as well as to reheat other beverages.

Warning: Dispensing may be preceded by short sprays of hot water, and scalding is possible. The hot water/steam wand may reach high temperatures. Do not touch it with bare hands; use the appropriate handle only.

• (Fig. 7) - Place a container under the hot water/steam wand (10) (Pannarello).
- (Fig. 13) - When the machine is ready to brew coffee, turn the control dial (17) counter-clockwise to set it to the " 🔊" position; residual water may come out of the wand (Pannarello).
- The temperature light (19) blinks during the preheating time required by the machine.
- Steam dispensing will begin when the green temperature light (19) remains steady.
- Turn the control dial (17) clockwise and set it back to the "☐" position to stop dispensing steam.
• Fill 1/3 the cup with cold milk.

Use cold milk for better results when preparing a cappuccino.

  • (Fig. 14) - Immerse the steam wand (Pannarello for Plus version) in the milk to be heated and turn the control dial (17) counter-clockwise to set it to the " 🔊" position. Froth the milk by gently swirling the cup and moving it up and down.
  • After dispensing steam for the desired time, turn the control dial (17) clockwise and set it back to the "()" position to stop dispensing steam.
  • The same procedure can be used to heat other beverages.

After using the steam wand (Pannarello for Plus version), wash it as described in the "Cleaning and Maintenance" section.

- Prime the machine as described in section 4.4.

If the control dial is left on the central position, the machine, in order to save energy, automatically reaches the temperature needed to dispense coffee.
