Your machine is designed to deliver the ultimate result in the cup, with that result being highly dependent on 4 basic factors : the water, the coffee, the ratio and the grind. Read more about these important factors on the following pages.

USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Remove all packaging The water filter holder (j) and cartridge (k) are located inside the water tank (a). Please remove before filling water tank. Before brewing coffee for the first time, follow the steps below and run a brew cycle without coffee and without the DuoFilter (k), to rinse the system. Use a full tank of water. Remove the DuoFilter (k) from its plastic covering. Rinse it under tap water for 1 minute. Unhinge the lower part of the holder and insert the DuoFilter (k) into its housing. Replace the water filter holder (j). The coffee machine is ready to use.

1- Lift the removable water tank (a) from the machine and fill it with the desired

amount of cold water. Use filtered water if possible. (Fig 1a/ Fig 1b) fig. 1a fig. 1b

2- Put the water tank (a) back in place in the machine. Take care to insert it securely.

3- Insert the carafe or thermal jug (h) on its plate/base (g). Be sure that the

carafe or thermal jug (h) sits flat and level on the heating plate (g) before starting the brew cycle. Note : If you use the carafe (h) to fill the tank with cold water rinse the carafe (h) with hot water before starting the brew cycle. This will help raise the temperature of the coffee in the carafe (h).

4- Open the drawer (e) and add paper or permanent filter to the brew basket.

Krups original accessories: -#4 paper filters 100-pack. Item # 983 -#4 size gold tone filter. Item # 049 fig. 8

5- Add ground coffee to the basket.

- Measure maximum one rounded coffee scoop per 5 oz. cup of water. - This simple step is critical to the taste of your brewed coffee. - See your brewing guide on page 13 for more detail.

6- Close completely the drawer (e).

As it closes you will feel a magnet secure the draw in place. The machine will not brew if the drawer is not fully closed. fig. 3

7- For immediate brewing, press the ON/OFF button (m) and the brew cycle will begin.

The On/Off button (m) will glow red while the machine is brewing and stay lighted for 2 hours while the coffee is kept warm on the heating plate (g). To use the Auto-On function, see the section “Programming your coffee machine”. Real time clock is displayed on (l). By default setting, 0:00 is showed. DURING THE BREW CYCLE STEAM RISES FROM THE TOP OF THE MACHINE. BE CAREFUL TO KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM THIS AREA UNTIL AFTER THE BREW CYCLE IS COMPLETED ! Auto-Off Function: The heating plate (g) will maintain the temperature in the carafe (h) for 2 hours after which the machine shuts off automatically. This is for safety and convenience. The auto-off time can be adjusted from 30 minutes up to 3 hours in 30 minutes intervals. See page 10 –Programming the machine. For best results brew only as much coffee as you will drink within 30-60 minutes. Pause and Serve Feature: You can remove the carafe (h) during the brew cycles to pour an early cup. Keep in mind that this will change the taste you would normally get from a full pot in a complete cycle. Be sure to replace the carafe (h) quickly to avoid overflow during the brew cycle.

Warning Put the carafe or thermal jug (h) on its plate/base (g) within a maximum of 20 seconds. Hot water continues to drip in the filter holder (c) when the carafe (h) is removed. The overflow of coffee and hot water could cause burns. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of the water tank (a) as shown by the Maxi level written on the water tank. Place the ground coffee into the paper filter or directly into a permanent filter. After use, discard the grounds, and rinse the cone filter holder (c) under running water. When the machine is hot, do not touch the drawer as the surface may be hot. Use the drawer handle.

Press the Program button (o) when done.

WATER FILTRATION Krups DuoFilter water filtration system: Vegetable based carbon and resin components provide double acting anti-chlorine and anti-scale filtration. These proporties combine to protect the most delicate flavors in your coffee as well as protecting the machine’s brewing system from the harmful effects of scale. Please review the the section on descaling on page 12. Note: the rotary indicator (i) on the top of the water filter holder (j) can be used as a reminder to change the water filter. Turn the indicator to the month the filter should be changed, referring to the chart below. Example: if you install a new DuoFilter (k) in January (1) you should set the indicator (k) to March (3) or May (5), depending on the hardness of your local water supply: position the number 3 or 5 opposite the index mark. Water type Soft water Hard water Uses Replace Duo Filter every : about 80 2 months about 120 4 months Important:

  • The DuoFilter (k) must only be used with water.
  • The coffee machine still functions if the water filter is not in place.
  • If the coffee machine has not been used for more than one month, rinse the DuoFilter (k) under running water.

It is recommended not to leave the DuoFilter (k) in place for more than 5 months. CLEANING Turn off the coffee machine and remove the plug from the outlet. Do not clean the coffee machine when it is hot. Never immerse the coffee machine in water or put it under running water.

  • Clean the body of the coffee machine with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • Open the drawer (e), remove the paper or permanent filter. The filter holder (c) can be washed in warm soapy water and rinsed thoroughly, or cleaned in the upper rack of a dishwasher. Note : It is important to regularly clean all components that are contacted by the coffee. The natural oils in coffee can accumulate on these surfaces and quickly begin to contribute unwanted stale flavors to the brew.
  • We recommend washing carafes (h) by hand with a mild detergent.
  • Do not use scouring agents or harsh cleansers on any part of the coffee machine. fig. 8

DESCALING Your coffee machine should be descaled regularly. The machine tracks the number of brewing cycles and automatically reminds you when it is time to descale. Note : visit www.krupsonlinestore.com for approved descaling products when the descale icon appear on the display:

  • Remove the permanent filter (if applicable) from the brew basket. Do not put ground coffee in the filter basket.
  • Remove water filtration system from tank.
  • Depending on the directions for your descaling product, fill the tank about 1/2 full, add the descaling powder and stir to dissolve.

Press “ON” and let 1/2 of the water to run through and into the carafe, then turn the machine off. fig. 7

Page 13 Let it stand in the machine for 20-30 minutes. Turn the machine on again and let the rest of the water run through. Discard the water and run at least 2 cycles with clear water to rinse. Unused cord can be stored inside the coffee maker (f). Simply push the extra length of cord into the storage compartiment in the back of the machine. COFFEE BREWING GUIDE

29/04/09 15:07 Page 14 English THE COFFEE Choose your beans wisely. It is best to use premium whole beans from a trusted brand or roaster. Arabica beans provide the best flavors and have less caffeine, while Robusta beans are easier to grow and less expensive, they have less flavor and higher caffeine content. Robusta beans are sometimes used in blends to add a particular bitterness to the brew. Beans can be roasted very lightly to provide a smooth aromatic taste or roasted dark to provide stronger flavors, and anywhere in between. A good roaster will be able to describe the flavors that the beans will impart to your brewed coffee. Note: experiment with different beans and different roasts to identify one or several that suit your tastes. THE RATIO The amount of ground coffee must be carefully measured against the volume of water for each brew cycle. It is important to use enough coffee to avoid over extraction. A small amount of coffee would be overwhelmed by a large volume of hot water. The carafe measures “cups” as 5 oz each. Maximum capacity is slightly more than 50 oz total water volume before brewing. The volume of brewed coffee will be slightly less because the ground coffee will absorb a certain amount. Krups recommends using 7 grams of ground coffee per 5 oz cup of water. 7 grams can be measured in one rounded tablespoon. If the resulting brew seems too strong you can adjust by using slightly less ground coffee. If you prefer a much lighter taste it is best to brew at the recommended ratio and dilute the resulting brew with a measure of hot water. This allows the best flavor to be extracted from the beans while avoiding over extraction of too small an amount of ground coffee.

The water is a critical factor in the taste of your brewed coffee. Filtered water is normally the best choice to help avoid the minerals and chlorine that can be found in municipal water systems. However if your water tastes good then it should be good for four coffee. Never pour milk, prepared coffee, tea, etc. into a water tank (a). THE GRIND The method of grinding and the level of fineness of the grind have a significant impact on the resulting taste of the brewed coffee. Ideally you should grind fresh roasted whole beans just before brewing. Be aware that this machine is set to brew the most common grinds found on store shelves. Typically pre-ground coffees are of a similar size, medium-coarse. A very fine grind will produce much stronger flavors but risks becoming extracted during the brew cycle producing a more bitter taste. You can learn more about coffee grinding and about Krups range of grinders at our website www.krupsusa.com.

The coffee does not brew or the machine does not switch on.

15:07 Page 16 English TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM 29/04/09 Appliance appears to be leaking.

It takes a long time to brew.

SOLUTION Check to ensure the appliance is plugged into a working outlet, and the appliance is in the «ON» position. The water tank (a) is empty or is missing. There was a power failure. There was a power surge. Unplug the machine, then plug it back in. The clock must be reset after a power failure. The Auto-Off function switches off the coffee maker. Switch off the coffee maker then switch it back on to make more coffee. For more information, refer to the section « Making coffee ». Water tank (a) is not in place. Drawer is not closed properly. Drawer has been opened during brewing : press On/Off button (m) to restart. Make sure that the water tank (a) has not been filled beyond the max. fill level. It may be time to descale your coffee maker.

  • Numerous minerals may accumulate in the coffee maker’s circuit. Periodic descaling of the machine is recommended. More frequent descaling may be necessary depending on the hardness of the water. For more information, refer to the “Descaling” section. NOTE: do not dismantle the machine. The filter holder (c) overflows or the coffee drips too slowly.

The coffee has a bad taste.

With machine equipped with a thermal carafe (h), the coffee temperature is too low.

29/04/09 SOLUTION 15:07 Page 17 English Excessive amount of coffee. We recommend that you use one measuring spoon or one tablespoon of coffee ground per cup. Coffee ground too fine (unsuitable for an automatic coffee maker). The carafe (h) is not well positioned on the hot plate (g). The carafe (h) was removed for more than 20 seconds during brewing and was not correctly put back on the hot plate (g). Some coffee grounds have seeped in between the paper filter and the filter holder (c). The paper filter is not open or is incorrectly positioned. Rinse out the filter holder (c) before putting in the paper filter so that its edges stick to the damp sides of the filter. The coffee maker needs to be cleaned. The coffee grounds are not suited to your coffee maker. The proportion of coffee to water is inadequate. Adjust it to suit your taste. The quality and freshness of the coffee are not optimal. Poor-quality water. Use filtered or bottled water. Read our Coffee Brewing Guide on page 13. Warm the thermal carafe (h) by rinsing with hot water just before brewing. Remove the thermal carafe from the machine after brewing is complete. If your appliance still does not work, please call your respective countries consumer service department.
