Electromagnetic fields (EMF)

This Philips appliance complies with all standards regarding electromagnetic fields (EMF). If handled properly and according to the instructions in this user manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientific evidence available today.

Before first use

Note: The iron may give off some smoke when you use it for the first time. This is normal and stops after a short while.

Note: Some particles may come out of the soleplate when you use the iron for the first time. This is normal; the particles are harmless and stop coming out of the iron after a short while.

Note: When you switch on the appliance, the steam generator may produce a pumping sound. This is normal; the sound tells you that water is pumped into the steam generator.

1 Remove any sticker or protective foil from the soleplate and clean the soleplate with a soft cloth.

Preparing for use

1 Place the steam generator on a stable and level surface, e.g. on the hard part of the ironing board or on a table.

Filling the detachable water tank

You can fill the water tank at any time during use.

Do not put hot water, perfume, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids or other chemicals in the water tank.

Do not overfill the water tank, otherwise water may spill out of the filling opening when you reinsert the water tank.

Illustration of a hand using a tool to adjust or install a white object, with an arrow indicating direction (no text or symbols present)

1 Remove the detachable water tank from the steam generator. 2 Fill the water tank with tap water up to the MAX indication.

Note: If the tap water in your area is very hard, we advise you to mix it with an equal amount of distilled water.

3 Slide the water tank firmly back into the steam generator ('click').

Note: If the water tank is not properly placed, the iron does not produce any steam.

Water tank refill light (GC8325/GC8320 only)

When the water tank is empty, the water tank refill light starts flashing and steam ironing is no longer possible.

1 Remove the water tank and fill it. 2 Put the water tank back into the steam generator. The iron is ready for steam ironing again.

Setting the temperature

PHILIPS Impact Plus FC8384 - Setting the temperature - 1

1 Check the laundry care label of the article to be ironed to determine the required ironing temperature.

  • ● for synthetic fabrics (e.g. acrylic, viscose, polyamide) and silk
  • ●● for wool
  • ●●● for cotton
  • MAX for linen

2 To set the required ironing temperature, turn the temperature dial to the appropriate position. 3 Put the mains plug in an earthed wall socket. 4 Switch on the appliance.

- GC8325/GC8320 only: Press the on/off button once.

The power-on light of the on/off button goes on.

The temperature light on the iron goes on. When the iron has reached the set temperature, the temperature light goes out.

Note: During ironing, the temperature light goes on from time to time. This indicates that the iron is heating up to the set temperature.

The steam light starts flashing. After approx. 2 minutes, the steam light stays on continuously to indicate that the steam generator is ready for steam ironing. - GC8210 only: Set the on/off switch to 'on'. The power-on light in the on/off switch goes on. The temperature light on the iron goes on. When the iron has reached the set temperature, the temperature light goes out.

Note: During ironing, the temperature light goes on from time to time. This indicates that the iron is heating up to the set temperature.

After approx. 2 minutes, the steam generator is ready for steam ironing.

Tips

  • If you do not know what kind or kinds of fabric an article is made of, determine the right ironing temperature by ironing a part that is not visible when you wear or use the article.
  • If the fabric consists of various kinds of fibres, always select the temperature required by the most delicate fibre, i.e. the lowest temperature. For example: if a fabric consists of 60% polyester and 40% cotton, it must be ironed at the temperature indicated for polyester (●) and without steam.
  • Start ironing the articles that require the lowest ironing temperature, i.e. those made of synthetic materials.
  • If you set a lower temperature during ironing, wait until the iron has cooled down to the set temperature before you continue ironing. To make the iron cool down faster, simply press the steam trigger or iron a piece of cloth.

Using the appliance

Steam ironing

The supply hose may become hot during a long ironing session.

PHILIPS Impact Plus FC8384 - Steam ironing - 1

Note: The system may occasionally produce a pumping sound during steam ironing. This is normal and tells you that water is pumped into the steam generator.

1 Make sure there is enough water in the water tank. 2 Make sure the appliance is plugged in and switched on (see chapter 'Preparing for use'). 3 Set the required ironing temperature (see chapter 'Preparing for use'). Steam ironing is only possible at ironing temperatures higher than ●●.

4 GC8325/GC8320 only: Set the required steam setting with the + and - buttons on the steam generator control panel.

for maximum steam (temperature setting MAX). for moderate steam (temperature settings ●●● to MAX). ECO for minimum steam (temperature settings ●● to MAX).

for no steam (temperature settings ● to MAX).

The steam light flashes to indicate that the steam generator is heating up.

After approx. 2 minutes, the steam light stays on continuously to indicate that the steam generator is ready for steam ironing.

Note: During ironing, you can adjust the steam setting with the + and - steam buttons. It takes a few moments before the amount of steam is adjusted.

5 Press the steam trigger to start steam ironing.

When you put down the iron during ironing, put it on its heel or on the iron stand.

The opening and closing of the steam valve in the steam generator causes a clicking sound. This is normal.

Steam lock function

The steam lock allows you to steam iron non-stop without having to press the steam activator continuously.

  • When you slide the steam lock forwards, the iron produces steam continuously. To stop steaming, slide the steam lock backwards.
  • When the steam lock is deactivated, the iron only produces steam when you press the steam trigger.

Note: Release the steam lock when you put the iron on its heel or on the iron stand. This prevents that hot steam escapes from the iron or that the iron stand gets wet.

Vertical steaming

Never direct the steam at people.

1 Hold the iron in vertical position and press the steam trigger to steam iron hanging curtains and clothes (jackets, suits, coats).

Shot of steam (GC8325/GC8320 only)

A powerful shot of steam helps to remove stubborn creases.

1 Set the temperature dial to a position between ●●● and MAX.

Illustration of a hand using an iron on a steam machine (no text or symbols)

2 Press the shot-of-steam button.

Note: Use the shot-of-steam function intermittently. If water droplets come out of the soleplate, let the iron heat up for at least one minute before you use the shot-of-steam function again.

Ironing without steam

ECO

There are one or two ways to iron without steam:

  • All types: Simply start ironing without pressing the steam trigger.
  • GC8325/GC8320 only: Select steam setting (no steam) and start ironing.

Tips

  • When you steam iron woollen fabrics, shiny patches may occur. To prevent this, use a dry pressing cloth or turn the article inside out and iron the reverse side.
  • Silk, woollen and synthetic materials: iron the reverse side of the fabric to prevent shiny patches.
  • Iron velvet and other fabrics that tend to acquire shiny patches in one direction only (along with the nap) while you apply very little pressure.
  • Do not use steam when you iron coloured silk. This could cause stains.

Guarantee & service

If you need service or information or if you have a problem, please visit the Philips website at www.philips.com or contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your country (you find its phone number in the worldwide guarantee leaflet). If there is no Consumer Care Centre in your country, go to your local Philips dealer.

Troubleshooting

This chapter summarises the most common problems you could encounter with the appliance. If you are unable to solve the problem with the information below, contact the Consumer Care Centre in your country.

Problem Cause Solution

The appliance does not become hot. There is a connection problem. Check the mains cord, the plug and the wall socket.
You have not switched on the appliance. GC8325/GC8320: Press the on/off button. GC8210: set the on/off switch to 'on'.
The set temperature is too low. Set a higher temperature.
Smoke comes out of my new iron when I switch it on.Some parts of the appliance have been lightly greased in the factory and may initially give off some smoke when heated. This phenomenon is normal and ceases after a short while.
The iron does not produce any steam. There is not enough water in the water tank.Fill the water tank. See chapter 'Preparing for use', section 'Filling the detachable water tank'.
The steam generator has not heated up sufficiently.Wait approx. 2 minutes. GC8325/ GC8320 only: wait until the steam light stays on continuously.
The set ironing temperature is too low for steam ironing.Set a temperature of ●● or higher.
GC8325/GC8320 only: You have set steam setting (no steam).Set steam setting ECO, (moderate steam) or (maximum steam).
You have not placed the water tank properly in the steam generator.Place the water tank properly in the steam generator ('click').
When the iron is set to a very high temperature, the steam produced is dry and hardly visible. It is even less visible when the ambient temperature is relatively high and it is entirely invisible when the temperature is set to MAX.Set the iron to a lower temperature, e.g. ●●, to check if the iron actually produces steam.
Water droplets come out of the soleplate. The set temperature is too low for steam ironing.Set a temperature of ●● or higher.
When you start steam ironing and when you stop steam ironing for a while, the steam still present in the supply hose cools down and condenses into water. This causes water droplets to come out of the soleplate. This is normal. When you start ironing or when you continue ironing after an interruption, hold the iron over an old cloth and press the steam trigger. Wait until steam instead of water comes out of the soleplate.

Problem Cause Solution

Flakes and impurities come out of the soleplate or the soleplate is dirty.Impurities or chemicals present in the water have deposited in the steam vents and/or on the soleplate.Clean the soleplate with a damp cloth.
The appliance produces a pumping sound.Water is pumped into the steam generator. This is normal.
The pumping sound does not stop. Unplug the iron immediately and contact an authorised Philips service centre.
The iron produces steam continuously. The steam lock has been set to 'on'. Set the steam lock to 'off' if you only want to obtain steam when you press the steam trigger (see section 'Steam lock function').
Dirty water comes out of the soleplate.Too much scale and minerals have accumulated inside the steam generator.Rinse the steam generator. See chapter 'Cleaning and maintenance'.
Steam escapes from under the Calc-Clean rinsing cap when the appliance heats up.You have not tightened the Calc-clean rinsing cap properly.Switch off the appliance, tighten the Calc-Clean rinsing cap and switch on the appliance again. If steam continues to escape when the appliance is heating up, switch off the appliance and contact a service centre authorised by Philips.
The iron does not produce enough steam/the amount of steam decreases and increases during steam ironing. When the appliance pumps water into the steam generator, the steam amount sometimes decreases. This is probably when you think that the iron does not produce enough steam. However, this is a normal phenomenon and the steam output normalises within a few seconds. To optimise the steam output, release the steam lock when you do not need steam and when you put down the iron.
Wet spots appear on the fabric during ironing. The wet spots that appear on the fabric after you have steam ironed for some time may be caused by steam that has condensed onto the ironing board. Iron the wet spots without steam for some time to dry them. If the underside of the ironing board is wet, wipe it with a piece of dry cloth. To prevent steam from condensing onto the ironing board, use an ironing board with a wire mesh top.
GC8325/GC8320 only: Water droplets come out of the soleplate when I use the shot-of-steam function.Steam may have condensed in the hose, the temperature may have been set below ●●● or the appliance may not be ready for steam ironing.Make sure the temperature is set to ●●● or higher. Steam iron for a few seconds before you use the shot-of-steam function.

Troubleshooting

This chapter describes the most common problems you might encounter when using the appliance. If you cannot solve the problem with the information below, contact the Consumer Care Center in your country.

Problem Cause Solution

Aparat se ne zagrijava.Problem je u napajanju. Provjerite kabel, utikač i zidnu utičnicu.
Niste uključili aparat. GC8325/GC8320: Pritisnite gumb za uključivanje/isključivanje. GC8210: prekidač za uključivanje/isključivanje postavite na “on” (uključeno).
Postavili ste prenisku temperaturu.

- All models: Start ironing without pressing the steam release switch.

- Only GC8325/GC8320: Select the steam setting (no steam) and start ironing.

Tips

  • When ironing woolen garments with a steam iron, shiny marks may appear. Use a dry cloth over the garment or turn the garment inside out and iron it that way.
  • Silk, wool, and synthetic materials: iron the inside of the fabric to avoid shiny marks.
  • Velvet and other fabrics that may show shiny marks should be ironed only in one direction (with the nap), applying very light pressure.
  • Do not use steam when ironing colored silk. This could cause stains.
