Safety Instructions

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING: Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided

with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

Work area safety

  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety

Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection

used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.

Power tool use and care

24 | English

Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Service

Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Safety Warnings for Mitre Saws

  • Mitre saws are intended to cut wood or wood-like products; they cannot be used with abrasive cut-off wheels for cutting ferrous material such as bars, rods, studs, etc. Abrasive dust causes moving parts such as the lower guard to jam. Sparks from abrasive cutting will burn the lower guard, the kerf insert, and other plastic parts. Use clamps to support the workpiece whenever possible. If supporting the workpiece by hand, you must always keep your hand at least 100 mm from either side of the saw blade. Do not use this saw to cut pieces that are too small to be securely clamped or held by hand. If your hand is placed too close to the saw blade, there is an increased risk of injury from blade contact. The workpiece must be stationary and clamped or held against both the fence and the table. Do not feed the workpiece into the blade or cut "freehand" in any way. Unrestrained or moving workpieces could be thrown at high speeds, causing injury. Push the saw through the workpiece. Do not pull the saw through the workpiece. To make a cut, raise the saw head and pull it out over the workpiece without cutting, start the motor, press the saw head down, and push the saw through the workpiece. Cutting on the pull stroke is likely to cause the saw blade to climb on top of the workpiece and violently throw the blade assembly towards the operator. Never cross your hand over the intended line of cutting either in front or behind the saw blade. Supporting the workpiece "cross handed" i.e., holding the workpiece to the right of the saw blade with your left hand or vice versa is very dangerous. Do not reach behind the fence with either hand closer than 100 mm from either side of the saw blade, to remove wood scraps, or for any other reason while the blade is spinning. The proximity of the spinning saw blade to your hand may not be obvious and you may be seriously injured. Inspect your workpiece before cutting. If the workpiece is bowed or warped, clamp it with the outside bowed face toward the fence. Always make certain that there is no gap between the workpiece, fence, and table along the line of the cut. Bent or warped workpieces can twist or shift and may cause binding on the spinning saw blade while cutting. There should be no nails or foreign objects in the workpiece.

Do not use the saw until the table is clear of all tools, wood scraps, etc., except for the workpiece. Small debris or loose pieces of wood or other objects that contact the revolving blade can be thrown with high speed. ▶ Cut only one workpiece at a time. Stacked multiple workpieces cannot be adequately clamped or braced and may bind on the blade or shift during cutting. ▶ Ensure the mitre saw is mounted or placed on a level, firm work surface before use. A level and firm work surface reduces the risk of the mitre saw becoming unstable. ▶ Plan your work. Every time you change the bevel or mitre angle setting, make sure the adjustable fence is set correctly to support the workpiece and will not interfere with the blade or the guarding system. Without turning the tool "ON" and with no workpiece on the table, move the saw blade through a complete simulated cut to assure there will be no interference or danger of cutting the fence. ▶ Provide adequate support such as table extensions, saw horses, etc. for a workpiece that is wider or longer than the table top. Workpieces longer or wider than the mitre saw table can tip if not securely supported. If the cut-off piece or workpiece tips, it can lift the lower guard or be thrown by the spinning blade. Do not use another person as a substitute for a table extension or as additional support. Unstable support for the workpiece can cause the blade to bind or the workpiece to shift during the cutting operation pulling you and the helper into the spinning blade. The cut-off piece must not be jammed or pressed by any means against the spinning saw blade. If confined, i.e. using length stops, the cut-off piece could get wedged against the blade and thrown violently. ▶ Always use a clamp or a fixture designed to properly support round material such as rods or tubing. Rods have a tendency to roll while being cut, causing the blade to "bite" and pull the work with your hand into the blade. ▶ Let the blade reach full speed before contacting the workpiece. This will reduce the risk of the workpiece being thrown. If the workpiece or blade becomes jammed, turn the mitre saw off. Wait for all moving parts to stop and disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack. Then work to free the jammed material. Continued sawing with a jammed workpiece could cause loss of control or damage to the mitre saw. ▶ After finishing the cut, release the switch, hold the saw head down and wait for the blade to stop before removing the cut-off piece. Reaching with your hand near the coasting blade is dangerous. The power tool is provided with a laser warning label (marked with number 3 in the representation of the power tool on the graphics page).

IEC 60825-1:2014 <1mW, 650 nm Laser Radiation Do not stare into beam Class 2 laser product

If the text of the warning label is not in your national language, stick the provided warning label in your national language over it before operating for the first time.

BOSCH PCM 8 SD - Safety Warnings for Mitre Saws - 2

Do not direct the laser beam at persons or animals and do not stare into the direct or reflected laser beam yourself, not even from a distance. You could blind somebody, cause accidents or damage your eyes.

▶ If laser radiation strikes your eye, you must deliberately close your eyes and immediately turn your head away from the beam. ▶ Do not make any modifications to the laser equipment. ▶ Never make warning signs on the machine unrecognisable. ▶ Do not use dull, cracked, bent or damaged saw blades. Unsharpened or improperly set saw blades produce narrow kerf causing excessive friction, blade binding and kick-back. ▶ Do not use high speed steel (HSS) saw blades. Such saw blades can easily break. ▶ Always use blades with correct size and shape (diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run eccentrically, causing loss of control. ▶ Do not touch the saw blade after working before it has cooled. The saw blade becomes very hot while working.

Products sold in GB only: Your product is fitted with a BS 1363/A approved electric plug with internal fuse (ASTA approved to BS 1362).

If the plug is not suitable for your socket outlets, it should be cut off and an appropriate plug fitted in its place by an authorised customer service agent. The replacement plug should have the same fuse rating as the original plug.

The severed plug must be disposed of to avoid a possible shock hazard and should never be inserted into a mains socket elsewhere.

  • Loosen the clamping lever 48 and pull the right-hand adjustable fence 9 completely outward. Retighten the clamping lever 48. If you want to use the complete bevel angle range, you also have to pull the left-hand adjustable fence 9 completely outward.

- Loosen the lock lever 30.

- Tilt the tool arm via handle 6 to the left or right until angle indicator 43 or 39 indicate the desired bevel angle.

- Retighten the lock lever 30 again.

Adjusting Standard Bevel Angles (see figure J4)

  • Loosen the lock lever 30.
  • Standard 0° Bevel Angle: Swing the tool arm by the handle 6 slightly to the left and swing the stop 47 completely inward. Standard bevel angles 45°, 33.9° and 22.5°: Turn the stop 42 until the required standard bevel angle engages at the arrow mark.
  • Retighten the lock lever 30 again.

Starting Operation

▶ Observe correct mains voltage! The voltage of the power source must agree with the voltage specified on the nameplate of the machine. Power tools marked with 230 V can also be operated with 220 V.

Products sold in AUS and NZ only: Use a residual current device (RCD) with a rated residual current of 30 mA or less.

Switching On (see figure K)

To save energy, only switch the power tool on when using it.

- To switch on the power tool, first press the lock-off button 4 right or left. Then press the On/Off switch 5 and keep it pressed.

Note: For safety reasons, the On/Off switch 5 cannot be locked; it must remain pressed during the entire operation.

Switching Off

- To switch off the machine, release the On/Off switch 5.

Working Advice

General Sawing Instructions

▶ Always firmly tighten locking knob 13 and lock lever 30 before sawing. Otherwise the saw blade could become jammed in the workpiece.

Make sure that the retracting blade guard operates properly and that it can move freely. The retracting blade guard must open when the tool arm is guided downward. The retracting blade guard must close again completely over the saw blade when the tool arm is guided upward.

Only saw materials which are permitted within the scope of the intended use.

Protect the saw blade against impact and shock. Do not subject the saw blade to lateral pressure.

Marking the Cutting Line (see figures L1-L2)

A laser beam indicates the cutting line of the saw blade. This allows for exact positioning of the workpiece for sawing, without having to open the retracting blade guard.

  • For this, switch the laser beam on with the switch 26.
  • Slide the laser beam using the sliding switch 37 to the left or right depending on the preferred viewing direction. As a result, the cutting line will be indicated on either the left or right of the saw blade.
  • If the cutting line is indicated by the laser beam on the left of the saw blade, align your mark on the workpiece with the right-hand edge of the laser line. If the cutting line is indicated by the laser beam on the right of the saw blade, align your mark on the workpiece with the left-hand edge of the laser line.

30 | English

Position of the Operator (see figure M)

Do not stand in line with the saw blade in front of the machine. Always stand aside of the saw blade. This protects your body against possible kickback.

Permissible Workpiece Dimensions

Maximum workpiece sizes:

Mitre/Bevel Angle Height x WidthHorizontal Vertical
0° 0°70 x 305 mm
45° 0°70 x 215 mm
0° 45°40 x 305 mm
45° 45°40 x 215 mm

Minimum workpiece sizes (= all workpieces that can be clamped left or right from the saw blade with the provided quick-action clamp 22):

100 x 40 mm (length x width)

Cutting depth, max. (0°/0°): 70 mm

Sawing without Slide Movement (Cutting Off) (see figure N)

  • For cuts without slide movement (small workpieces), loosen the locking screw 25 if it is tightened. Push the tool arm all the way towards the fences 9 and 11 and retighten the locking screw 25.
  • Set the required mitre angle as necessary. For all cuts, it must first be ensured that the saw blade at no time can come in contact with the fence, screw clamps or other machine parts. Remove any mounted auxiliary stops or adjust them accordingly.
  • Firmly clamp the workpiece as appropriate for its dimensions.
  • Switch on the machine.
  • Slowly guide the tool arm downward with the handle 6.
  • Saw through the workpiece applying uniform feed.
  • Switch off the machine and wait until the saw blade has come to a complete stop.
  • Guide the tool arm slowly upward.

Sawing with Slide Movement

  • For cuts using the slide device 1 (wide workpieces), loosen the locking screw 25 in case it is tightened.
  • Pull the tool arm away from the fences 9 and 11 until the saw blade is in front of the workpiece.
  • Switch on the machine.
  • Slowly guide the tool arm downward with the handle 6.
  • Now push the tool arm toward the fences 9 and 11 and saw through the workpiece with uniform feed.
  • Switch off the machine and wait until the saw blade has come to a complete stop.
  • Guide the tool arm slowly upward.

Adjusting the Depth Stop (Sawing Grooves) (see figure O)

The depth stop must be adjusted when a trench gap is to be sawed.

  • Swivel the depth stop 34 outward.
  • Swing the tool arm downward by the handle 6 until the cutting-depth indicator 36 displays the required cutting depth on the cutting-depth scale 35.
  • Turn adjusting screw 33 until the screw end touches depth stop 34. – Guide the tool arm slowly upward.

Sawing Workpieces of the Same Length (see figure P)

The material stop 10 can be used for easily sawing workpieces to the same length.

  • Loosen the clamping lever 50 and set the material stop 10 to the required workpiece length.
  • Retighten the clamping lever 50.

Replacing the Insert Plate (see figure Q)

The black insert plate 16 can become worn after prolonged use of the power tool.

Replace a defective insert plate.

  • Bring the power tool into the working position.
  • Unscrew the fastening screw 66 using the hex key 49 and remove the old insert plate.
  • Insert the new insert plate and screw the fastening screw 66 in tight again.

Sawing Profile Strips

Profile strips/mouldings can be sawn in two different ways:

- Placed against the fence

Two abstract geometric shapes with shaded surfaces, no text or symbols present.

- Lying flat on the saw table

In addition, the cut can be performed with or without slide movement depending on the width of the profile strip/moulding.

Always make trial cuts with the mitre angle setting first on scrap wood.

Transport (see figure R)

Before transporting the power tool, the following steps must be carried out:

  • Bring the machine into the transport position.
  • Insert the flexible saw-table extensions 63 into the openings 64 of the power tool.
  • Remove all accessories that cannot be mounted firmly to the power tool.

If possible, place unused saw blades in an enclosed container for transport.

  • Always carry the power tool by its transport handle 2. When transporting the power tool, use only the transport devices and never use the protective devices.

Maintenance and Service

Maintenance and Cleaning

Before any work on the machine itself, pull the mains plug.

If the replacement of the supply cord is necessary, this has to be done by Bosch or an authorized Bosch service agent in order to avoid a safety hazard.

Cleaning

For safe and proper working, always keep the power tool and its ventilation slots clean.

The retracting blade guard must always be able to move freely and retract automatically. Therefore, always keep the area around the retracting blade guard clean.

Remove dust and chips after each working procedure by blowing out with compressed air or with a brush.

Clean the roller 24 regularly.
