The DVM892 is a 600V CATII digital multi-meter with a 3 12 digit LCD. This device is can be used to measure direct and alternating voltages, direct and alternating currents, resistance, continuity, capacity, temperature, frequency, diode and transistors (hFE).
Be very careful when using this device: carelessness can lead to serious or even fatal injury. Besides the usual safety-precautions for working with electrical circuits you must follow the safety guidelines as described in this manual. Do not use this device if you do not have preliminary knowledge of circuits and test procedures.
This device is not suitable for commercial or in dustrial use.
Refer to the Velleman® Service and Quality Warranty on the last pages of this manual.

4. Ov ervoltage/installation category
DMMs are categorized depending on the risk and severity of transient overvoltage that might occur at the point of test. Transients are short-lived bursts of energy induced in a system, e.g. caused by lightning strike on a power line.
The existing categories according EN 61010-1 are:
| CAT I | A CAT I-rated meter is suitable for measurements on protected electronic circuits which are not directly connected to mains power, e.g. electronics circuits, control signals... |
| CAT II | A CAT II-rated meter is suitable for measurements in CAT I-environments and mono-phase appliances which are connected to the mains by means of a plug and circuits in a normal domestic environment, provided that the circuit is at least 10m apart from a CAT III- or 20m apart from a CAT IV-environment. E.g. household appliances, portable tools.. |
| CAT III | A CAT III-rated meter is suitable for measurements in CAT I- and CAT II-environments, as well as for measurements on (fixed) mono- or poly-phased appliances which are at least 10m apart from of a CAT IV-environment, and for measurements in or on distribution level equipment (fuse boxes, lighting circuits, electric ovens). |

Warning:
This device was designed in accordance with EN 61010-1 installation category CAT II 600V. This implies that certain restrictions in use apply that are related to voltages and voltage peaks which can occur within the environment of use. Refer to the table above.

This device is suitable for measurements up to 600V on:
-
Protected electronic circuits which are not directly connected to mains power, e.g. electronics circuits, control signals, circuits behind isolating transformer..
• circuits which are directly connected to mains power, but limited to: -
measurements on mono-phase appliances which are connected to the mains by means of a plug
○ mono-phase appliances and circuits directly connected to the mains in a normal domestic environment, provided that the circuit is at least 10m apart from a CAT III- or 20m apart from a CAT IV-environment. E.g. household appliances, portable tools, light circuits at more than 10m from a distribution board ...
This device is NOT suitable for:
• Volta ges above 600V
- meas urements in/on low -voltage distribution boards (distribution boards behind meter box)
- measurements on (fixed) mono- or poly-phased appliances; and circuits in CAT III /CAT IV-environments (e.g. mains outlets, electric ovens, lighting circuits, bus bars, low-voltage distribution boards and circuit breakers).
- Measurements on distribution equipment and outdoor installations including meter boxes and equipment/circuits outside or remote from the domestic environment e.g. circuits in sheds, garden houses and free-standing garages, or circuits using underground wiring e.g. garden lighting, pool-pump...

This device is only suitable for measurements up to 600V in CAT II environments.
5. Pol lution degree
IEC 61010-1 specifies different types of pollution environments, for which different protective measures are necessary to ensure safety. Harsher environments require more protection, and the protection against the pollution which is to be found in a certain environment depends mainly on the insulation and the enclosure properties. The pollution degree rating of the DVM indicates in which environment the device may be used.
| Pollution degree 1 | No pollution or only dry, nonconductive pollution occurs. The pollution has no influence (only to be found in hermetically sealed enclosures) |
| Pollution degree 2 | Only nonconductive pollution occurs. Occasionally, temporary conductivity caused by condensation is to be expected (home and office environments fall under this category). |
| Pollution degree 3 | Conductive pollution occurs, or dry nonconductive pollution occurs that becomes conducive due to condensation that is to be expected (industrial environments and environments exposed to outside air - but not in contact with precipitation). |
| Pollution degree 4 | The pollution generates persistent conductivity caused by conductive dust or by rain or snow. (exposed outdoor environments and environments where high humidity levels or high concentrations of fine particles occur) |

Power ON/OFF button
This push-button activates and deactivates the device. The DVM892 is also equipped with an energy-saving feature: the meter is automatically deactivated when the RANGE and FUNCTION selector has not been used for 15 minutes. The user will have to press the ON/OFF button twice to switch the device on again when the energy-saving feature has deactivated the DVM892.
RANGE and FUNCTION switch
This rotary switch is used to select the desired range or function. Always remove the test probes from the device under test before selecting a different range/function!

a. General maintenance:
- Wipe the device regularly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol, solvents or abrasive products.
b. Battery/fuse replacement
- Replace the battery as soon as the "in dication" appears on the display. Low/bad batteries can produce false readings. The fuse rarely needs to be replaced and a blown fuse is almost always caused by a human error.
- Switch off the multi-meter.
- Remove test probes from the circuit undertest. Remove all test leads from the input jacks.
- Remove the protective cover and release the three screws at the back of the meter and gently open the housing.
- Replace the battery (9V 6LF22). Do not use rechargeable batteries and insert following the right polarity.

- To replace the fuse, carefully release the 4 screws that hold the PCB; these screws are located at the top, around the LCD.
• Gently lift the PCB. - Replace the fuse (ceramic – high breaking capacity 5x20mm F10A/250V)
- Place the PCB back. Make sure the LCD connection, buttons and jacks are lined up. Tighten the 4 screws.
- Close the housing and tighten the 3 screws. Put the protective cover back.
8. Accessories
- Set test probes 10A CATIII 600V
• Thermo couple type K, RVS probe (max. 4 (0°C) - Battery (inside meter)
- User manual
- Adaptor socket for easily measuring transistors and capacitors, and to connect thermocouples.
- Cover: protects the meter and provides a comfortable grip. For positioning features, refer to the images on page 2 of this manual.
A & B: Use either the small or large foldable stand
C: Use the small stand to hang the meter to a wall: remove the small stand and insert it in the slots near the top of the cover. Drive a nail in the wall and hang the meter.
D: The test probes can be stored in the two provisions at the back.
9. Operating instructions

Risk of electric shock during operation. Be very careful when measuring live circuits.

Before measuring, always make sure the meter and/or test probes are not damaged and verify the connections, selected function and range.
- Never exceed the limit value for protection. This limit value is listed separately in the specifications for each range of measurement.
- Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is linked to a circuit which is being tested.
- Only use the meter in the indicated overvoltage/installation category. Never measure voltages that might exceed the indicated category values.
- Disconnect the test leads from the tested circuit before rotating the range selector in order to change functions.
- When carrying out measurements on a TV set or switching power circuits, always remember that high amplitude voltage pulses at the test points might damage the meter.
- Always be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during me a surement.
- Do not measure current imcircuits with volt ages > 250V
- Never perform resistance, diode, transistor or continuity measurements on live circuits. Make sure all capacitors in the circuit are discharged.
- Automatic power-off: The device will be deactivated automatically when the FUNCTION and RANGE

switch has not been used for 15 minutes. This energy-saving feature extends the life of your battery.

Measuring voltages
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" jack.
- Select the appropriate V = (DC voltage)orW \~ (AC voltage) range with the FUNCTION switch. When the range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
- Connect the test probes to the circuit undertest.
- The measured value appears on the display.
Notes:
- For DC-measurements: when a negative polarity is present at the red test lead, the indicated value is preceded by a “-” sign.
- When the measured value is higher than the selected range limit, the display will show "1". Select a higher range.
Measuring currents

- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "mA/TEMP/CAP/hFE" jack for measurements of max. 200mA or to "10A" jack for measurements of max. 10A.
- Select the appropriate A = (DC) or A (A C) range with the FUNCTION switch. Select the 200m/20m10 range when the red test lead is connected to the "mA/TEMP/CAP/hFE" jack; select the 20m10 range when thered test lead is connected to the "10A" jack. When the range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
- Connect the test probes in series with the circuit.

- Read thee measured value from the display.
Notes:
- For DIC-current measurements, when a negative polarity is present at the red test lead, the indicated value is preceded by a “-” sign.
- The mA-range is protected against over-current with an automatic resettable fuse type 200mA/250V; the 10A range is protected by a ceramic 10A/250V fuse.
- When measuring currents up to 10A, max. 10s continuous measurement followed by a 15 minutes break between 2 measurements.
Measuring resistance

Do not perform resistance measurements on live circuits.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" jack.
- Select the appropriate "Ω" range with the FUNCTION switch. When the range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
- Connect the test probes to the circuit/component under test.
- The measured value appears on the display.
Notes:
- Never perform resistance measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.
- To increase accuracy when measuring low resistance values, first hold the tips of the measuring probes together to determine the resistance value of the test leads. Subtract this value from the measured value of the circuit.
- For resistance measurements above 1M Ω the meter needs a few seconds to stabilize the read-out.
- Should the measured resistance exceed the selected range or in case of an open circuit, the display will show "1".
Testing diodes & continuity

D) not perform continuity or diode measurements on live circuits.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" jack.
- Select the 2K range f or testing diode or the 200 for continuity tests.
- Connect the test leads to the circuit/component under test.
- Continuity:
When the measured resistance is less than 30 a continuous beep is produced and the resistance is displayed. Should the measured resistance exceed the selected range or in case of an open circuit, the display will show "1". - Diode test:
Connected: the red test lead to the anode; connect the black test lead to the cathode of the diode. Themeter will display the approximate forward voltage drop. If the lead connection is reversed, the meter will display "1".
Notes:
- Never perform continuity or diode measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.
- Measuring diodes that are part of a circuit might produce faulty results. Consider disconnecting them from the circuit.
Measuring capacitance

Do not perform capacitance measurements on live circuits. Use the included adaptor socket.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "mA/TEMP/CAP/hFE" jack.
- Connect the test probes to the included adaptor socket respecting the polarity.
- Select the appropriate "CAP" range with the FUNCTION switch. When the range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
- Place the capacitor under test in the adaptor socket, respecting the polarity in case of a polarised capacitor (the "+" of the capacitor must be inserted in the Lx jack, the "-" with the Cx jack).
- The measured value appears on the display.
Notes:
- Never perform capacitance measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.
- Should the measured pacitance exceed the selected range the display will show "1".
Transistor test (hFE)

Do not perform transistor measurements on live circuits. Use the included adaptor socket.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "mA/TEMP/CAP/hFE" jack.
- Connect the test probes to the included adaptor socket respecting the polarity.
- Select the hFE-range with the FUNCTION switch.
- Determine whether the transistor is of the N PN- or PNP-type and locate the emitter, the base and the collector. Insert the leads into the proper holes in the included adaptor socket.
- The display will show the approximate hFE-value (current gain). Base current 10μA, Vce 2.8V.
Measuring temperature

Do not touch any live parts with the temperature measuring probe. Use the included adaptor socket.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "mA/TEMP/CAP/hFE" jack.
- Connect the test probes to the included adaptor socket respecting the polarity.
- Select the TEMP-range with the FUNCTION switch.
- Insert the plug of the K-thermocouple in the adaptor socket according to the indicated polarity.
Note: push the temperature probe firmly into the socket.

- The display will show the temperature.
Note: without the thermocouple in place, the display will show the ambient temperature.
Measuring frequencies

Velleman® Service and Quality Warranty
Velleman® has over 35 years of experience in the electronics world and distributes its products in more than 85 countries. All our products fulfil strict quality requirements and legal stipulations in the EU. In order to ensure the quality, our products regularly go through an extra quality check, both by an internal quality department and by specialized external organisations. If, all precautionary measures notwithstanding, problems should occur, please make appeal to our warranty (see guarantee conditions).
General Warranty Conditions Concerning Consumer Products (for EU):
- All consumer products are subject to a 24-month warranty on production flaws and defective material as from the original date of purchase.
- Velleman® can decide to replace an article with an equivalent article, or to refund the retail value totally or partially when the complaint is valid and a free repair or replacement of the article is impossible, or if the expenses are out of proportion. You will be delivered a replacing article or a refund at the value of 100% of the purchase price in case of a flaw occurred in the first year after the date of purchase and delivery, or a replacing article at 50% of the purchase price or a refund at the value of 50% of the retail value in case of a flaw occurred in the second year after the date of purchase and delivery.
- Not covered by warranty:
- all direct or indirect damage caused after delivery to the article (e.g. by oxidation, shocks, falls, dust, dirt, humidity...), and by the article, as well as its contents (e.g. data loss), compensation for loss of profits;
- frequently replaced consumable goods, parts or accessories such as batteries, lamps, rubber parts, drive belts... (unlimited list);
- flaws resulting from fire, water damage, lightning, accident, natural disaster, etc. ...;
- flaws caused deliberately, negligently or resulting from improper handling, negligent maintenance, abusive use or use contrary to the manufacturer's instructions;
- damage caused by a commercial, professional or collective use of the article (the warranty validity will be reduced to six (6) months when the article is used professionally);
- damage resulting from an inappropriate packing and shipping of the article;

all damage caused by modification, repair or alteration performed by a third party without written permission by Velleman®.

Articles to be repaired must be delivered to your Velleman® dealer, solidly packed (preferably in the original packaging), and be completed with the original receipt of purchase and a clear flaw description.
- Hint: In order to save on cost and time, please reread the manual and check if the flaw is caused by obvious causes prior to presenting the article for repair. Note that returning a non-defective article can also involve handling costs.
- Repairs occurring after warranty expiration are subject to shipping costs.
- The above conditions are without prejudice to all commercial warranties.
