Thank you for buying the DVM860BL! Use this device to measure and test: AC & DC voltage & current (also with optional clamp AC97), resistance, temperature, batteries, diodes, continuity and transistors.

2. Safety

The DVM860BL is developed in accordance with IEC1010-1 concerning safety requirements for electrical measuring instruments with an overvoltage category (CAT III) 600V and pollution 2. Respect these safety prescriptions:

  • Protect yourself against electroshocks.
  • Do not use this device for any other application than those described in this manual.
  • Make sure the device was not damaged in transit.
  • Make sure the insulation of the test leads is not damaged and/or the wire itself is not exposed.
  • Full compliance with safety standards can only be guaranteed if the device is used with the supplied test leads. If necessary, they should be replaced with identical leads or leads with identical electric ratings. All test leads should be in good working order.
  • Select the right input jack, function and range before use.

- Never exceed the specified limit values for the various measurement ranges.

- Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is connected to a circuit.

- Place the range selector in the highest position if the value to be measured is unknown beforehand.

- Do not measure voltages > 600V above earth ground.

- Exercise extreme caution when working with voltages in excess of 60Vdc or 30Vrms AC. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers while using the device.

- Do not connect the leads to a voltage source while the function switch is in one of the following modes: current, resistance, temperature, battery, diode, transistor or continuity.

- Disconnect all test leads from the circuit to be tested prior to selecting a different function or range.

- Do not use the meter in dusty environments or in the presence of flammable gases and steam.

- Have the device checked by a qualified technician in case of malfunction.

- Never use the meter if the back panel is not in place and firmly fixed.

- Do not use or store the device in areas exposed to direct sunlight, high temperatures or high humidity.

4. Maintenance

  • Do not remove the back cover while a voltage is being applied. Only a qualified technician should handle repairs.
  • Always disconnect the test leads from all current sources before opening the meter.
  • Replace the batteries when the symbol is displayed.
  • Replace blown fuses with an identical one or a fuse with identical voltage and current ratings: F 200mA/250V (quick-acting).
  • Use a damp cloth and a mild detergent to clean the device. Never apply abrasives or solvents to the meter
  • Place the power switch in the OFF position when the device is not being used
  • Remove the batteries to keep them from leaking if the device is to be stored for a long time.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Data-Hold Button

Press the DATA-H button if you want the device to hold the measured value. Press this button again to disengage the data hold button.

6.2. Maximum Value Hold Button

Press the MAX.H button during your measurements to display the highest value measured so far. Press the button again to remove the value from the display.

6.3. Func. Button

Press this button during current and voltage measurements to alternate between DC and AC.

Press the button during temperature measurements to alternate between ^ C and ^ F.

Press the button while testing diodes or continuity to alternate between these two.

6.4. Range Selection

The auto range setting is used when measuring current, voltage and resistance. Press the RANGE button to select the manual range setting. The next level up is selected each time you press the button. Press the button when the highest range is selected in order to select the lowest range.

Hold the button for more than 2 seconds to return to the auto range setting.

6.5. Backlight

Press the button when it's getting too dark to read the LCD.

The backlight extinguishes automatically after 15 seconds. Hold the button for 2 seconds to extinguish the backlight. Remember that using the backlight often will shorten the life of your batteries.

The symbol is displayed when the battery voltage is less than 4V. Note, however, that this symbol may be displayed because you are using the backlight (which uses a lot of power), even though the actual battery charge >4V. In other words, you should only replace the batteries if the symbol is displayed when the backlight is not being used.

6.6. Auto Power Off

The device will deactivate automatically if no button is pressed for 15 minutes. The auto power off function is announced by five short beeps and one long one. Touch an arbitrary button or the selector to restore the device to normal working condition. Press the DATA HOLD button while the device is powering on if you want to disable the auto power off function.

6.7. Preparation for Measurement

  1. Press the ON/OFF button. The symbol is displayed when the battery voltage < 3.8V , indicating that the batteries need to be replaced.
  2. The Next to the INPUT jack means that the input voltage or current should not exceed the specified limit values in order to prevent damage to the meter.
  3. Select a function and a range with the selector. Place the range selector in the highest position if the range is unknown beforehand.
  4. First connect the black test lead (mass) and then the red one (+) to avoid electroshocks.

6.8. Measuring DC Voltage

WARNING

Do not exceed the max. input voltage of 600V DC!! Be very careful and avoid electroshocks when working with high voltages.

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Put the range switch in the desired V-range position.
  3. Press the FUNC. button to select DC measurement. Select manual or auto range selection with the RANGE button.
  4. Connect the test leads with the source or load under measurement.
  5. Read the measured value from the LCD. The polarity of the red lead connection is also indicated.

REMARKS

  • The LCD displays the overrange indication "OL" if the measured value is too high for the range you are using. Select a higher range.
  • Place the range selector in the highest position if the value to be measured is unknown beforehand.
  • When measuring low voltage values, the display will show fluctuating values as the test leads approach the circuit to be tested. Simply ignore these readings as this interference will disappear as soon as the test leads are physically touching the circuit you want to test.

6.9. Measuring AC Voltage

The input voltage should not exceed 600Vrms AC. Be very careful and avoid electroshocks when working with high voltages.

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Put the range switch in the desired V-range position.
  3. Press the FUNC. button to select AC measurement. Select manual or auto range selection with the RANGE button.
  4. Connect the test leads with the source or load under measurement.
  5. Read the measured value from the LCD.

REMARKS

  4. Connect the test leads in series with the load under measurement.
  5. The measured value and the polarity of the red connection are displayed.

6.13. Measuring AC Current (with optional clamp AC97)

  1. Connect the clamp's black test lead with the COM jack and the red lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Put the range selector in the position.
  3. Press the FUNC. button to select AC measurement. Select manual or auto range selection with the RANGE button.
  4. Connect the clamp with the circuit to be tested.
  5. Read the measured value from the LCD.

REMARKS

  • Use an AC clamp (e.g. AC97) to measure AC currents
  • The LCD displays the overrange indication "OL" if the measured value is too high for the range you are using. Select a higher range.
  • Place the range selector in the highest position if the value to be measured is unknown beforehand.
  • Install the same range on the DVM860BL and the AC clamp. If the ranges do not match exactly, be careful not to exceed the limit values on the DVM860BL and the AC clamp of your choice:

6.14. Measuring Resistance

WARNING

Disconnect the circuit to be tested and make sure that all capacitors are fully discharged before measuring the in-circuit resistance.

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Select the desired range with the range switch. Auto or manual range selection can be installed with the RANGE button.
  3. Connect the test leads with the resistance being measured.
  4. Read the value from the LCD.

REMARKS

  • The LCD displays the overrange indication "OL" if the measured value is too high for the range you are using. Select a higher range.
  • The meter may need a few seconds to display a stable reading when measuring resistances > 1MΩ.
  • The overrange indication "OL" is displayed when the input is not connected e.g. in case of an open circuit.

6.15. Measuring Temperature

WARNING

Do not connect the thermocouples with electrical circuits in order to avoid electroshocks.

  1. Put the range switch in the TEMP position.
  2. Select °C or °F with the FUNC. button.
  3. The LCD displays the current environmental temperature.
  4. Use a "K"-type thermocouple: Insert the black plug in the COM jack and the red one in the INPUT jack. Touch the test surface or test object with the thermocouple.
  5. Read the value from the LCD.

6.16. Testing Batteries

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Place the range switch in the correct position depending on the voltage of the tested battery (1.5V, 3V, 9V).
  3. Connect the test leads with the battery in question.
  4. Read the measured value from the LCD. The polarity of the red lead connection is also indicated.

6.17. Diode Test

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack (the polarity of the red test lead is "+").
  2. Place the range switch in the range position.
  3. Press the FUNC. button to select the function "diode test"
  4. Connect the red lead with the anode and the black lead with the cathode of the diode to be tested.
  5. Read the value from the LCD.

REMARKS

  • The LCD will display the possible forward voltage drop of the diode.
  • The overrange indication "OL" will be displayed if the leads have not been connected properly.
  • The overrange indication "OL" is displayed when the input is not connected e.g. in case of an open circuit.

6.18. Continuity Test

Deactivate the circuit to be tested and make sure all capacitors have been fully discharged prior to measuring the circuit's continuity.

  1. Connect the black test lead with the COM jack and the red test lead with the INPUT jack.
  2. Place the range switch in the desired range position.
  3. Press the FUNC. button to select the function "continuity measurements"
  4. Connect the test leads with two points of the circuit to be tested.
  5. The built-in buzzer will sound if continuity exists.

REMARKS

- The overrange indication "OL" is displayed when the measured resistance >200 or when the input is not connected e.g. in case of an open circuit.

6.19. Transistor Test

  1. Put the rotary switch in the hFE-position.
  2. Plug the multifunction socket into the COM jack and the INPUT jack.
  3. Identify whether the transistor is NPN or PNP type and locate the emitter, the base and the collector. Insert the transistor leads in the proper holes of the multifunctional socket.
  4. Read the value from the LCD.

7. Spare Parts

a) Batteries

WARNING

Disconnect the test leads before opening the battery compartment in order to avoid electroshocks.

The symbol is displayed if the batteries need to be replaced:

  1. Disconnect the test leads from all live sources, switch off the device and remove the test leads from the input terminals.
  2. Unscrew the cover of the battery compartment and remove it.
  3. Remove the batteries and replace them.
  4. Replace the cover and tighten the screws.

Remark: Respect all applicable laws when disposing of your old batteries.

b) Fuse

Disconnect all test leads before replacing the fuse in order to avoid electroshocks. In order to avoid unnecessary fire risks, you should only use fuses with the following ratings: F 200mA/250mV (quick-acting).

  1. Fuses only rarely need to be replaced and a blown fuse is usually the result of human error.
  2. Unscrew the battery cover, remove the old fuse and insert a new one with identical specifications.
  3. Replace the cover.

c) Test Leads

Only when you use the supplied test leads can we guarantee that you are complying fully with the safety standards. Replace them if necessary with test leads of the same model or with the same ratings. Electric ratings of the test leads: 600V 10A.
