Frequently Asked Questions - BP1700 VitalScan BRAUN

How do I apply the cuff correctly?
Wrap the cuff around your bare upper arm about 2-3 cm above the elbow. The air tube should point toward your hand. Tighten the cuff so it fits snugly but not too tight, leaving space for one finger.
How can I get accurate readings?
Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measurement. Place your arm on a table at heart level. Avoid talking or moving during measurement. Take multiple readings at same time of day.
What do the color bands on the display mean?
The color-coded scale follows WHO classifications: green (normal), yellow (pre-hypertension), orange (stage 1 hypertension), red (stage 2 hypertension). Always consult your doctor.
How do I store previous readings?
The device automatically stores the last measurement (or up to 30 readings in some models). Press the memory button to recall the stored value.
When should I replace the batteries?
Replace all 4 AA batteries when the battery symbol appears on the display. Use alkaline batteries for longer life.
How do I clean the monitor and cuff?
Wipe the device and cuff with a soft dry cloth. Do not immerse in water or use chemical cleaners. Allow cuff to air dry completely before reuse.
What does an error message like 'EE' mean?
Error codes indicate problems: 'EE' generally means the cuff is too loose or not properly positioned. Reapply the cuff securely and try again.
Does the device need calibration?
Braun blood pressure monitors are factory calibrated and require no user calibration. For accuracy checks, contact Braun service every 2 years.
Can I use the monitor on children?
The device is intended for adult use only. Consult a pediatrician for children, as the cuff may not be suitable.
What is the warranty period and how to claim?
Typically 2 years from date of purchase. Keep your receipt. Contact Braun customer service or visit the website for warranty claims.

Intended use of Braun VitalScan 3

Braun VitalScan 3 is a blood pressure monitor that has been developed for easy and accurate blood pressure measurements from the wrist. The measuring accuracy of Braun VitalScan 3 was tested at the time of manufacture and was proven by clinical research in accordance with AAMI/ANSI-SP10.

What you should know about blood pressure

Blood pressure constantly changes throughout the day. It rises sharply in the early morning and declines during the late morning. Blood pressure rises again in the afternoon and finally drops to a low level at night. Also, it may vary in a short period of time. Therefore, readings from successive measurements can fluctuate.

| Time | SYS (mm HG) | |------|-------------| | 6 | ~90 | | 5 | ~120 | | 12 | ~130 | | 18 | ~120 | | 0 | ~100 | | 18 | ~80 | | 24 | ~100 | | 30 | ~90 | | 36 | ~80 | | 42 | ~90 | | 48 | ~100 | | 54 | ~90 | | 60 | ~80 |

Note: Blood pressure readings from a healthy 31-year old male, measured at 5-minute intervals

Blood pressure measured in a doctor's office only provides a momentary value. Repeated measurements at home better reflect one's actual blood pressure values under everyday conditions.

Moreover, many people have a different blood pressure when they measure at home, because they tend to be more relaxed than when in the doctor's office.

Regular blood pressure measurements taken at home can provide your doctor with valuable information on your normal blood pressure values under actual «everyday» conditions.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set up the following standard blood pressure values when measured at resting pulse:

Blood pressure (mmHg)Normal values Mild hypertension Severehypertension
SYS = systole= upper valueup to 140140 – 180over 180
DIA = diastole= lower valueup to 9090 – 110over 110

Memory function

Your blood pressure monitor can store the readings of 90 measurements (BP 1700 model: 60 measurements). Storing is done automatically after each completed measurement. The memory is nonvolatile. This means that you will not lose stored data when changing batteries. The memory cannot be cleared. Once the memory is full, the oldest values will be overwritten.

The BP 1750 model features also an average function to display the average reading of the last three measurements.

Recalling stored and average readings

  • To recall stored and average readings, first turn the device off.
  • Then press the memory button («memo») (B).
