Intended use of Braun VitalScan 3
Braun VitalScan 3 is a blood pressure monitor that has been developed for easy and accurate blood pressure measurements from the wrist. The measuring accuracy of Braun VitalScan 3 was tested at the time of manufacture and was proven by clinical research in accordance with AAMI/ANSI-SP10.
What you should know about blood pressure
Blood pressure constantly changes throughout the day. It rises sharply in the early morning and declines during the late morning. Blood pressure rises again in the afternoon and finally drops to a low level at night. Also, it may vary in a short period of time. Therefore, readings from successive measurements can fluctuate.

Note: Blood pressure readings from a healthy 31-year old male, measured at 5-minute intervals
Blood pressure measured in a doctor's office only provides a momentary value. Repeated measurements at home better reflect one's actual blood pressure values under everyday conditions.
Moreover, many people have a different blood pressure when they measure at home, because they tend to be more relaxed than when in the doctor's office.
Regular blood pressure measurements taken at home can provide your doctor with valuable information on your normal blood pressure values under actual «everyday» conditions.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set up the following standard blood pressure values when measured at resting pulse:
| Blood pressure (mmHg) | Normal values Mild hypertension Severe | hypertension | |
| SYS = systole= upper value | up to 140 | 140 – 180 | over 180 |
| DIA = diastole= lower value | up to 90 | 90 – 110 | over 110 |

Safety information and important precautions
- To ensure accurate measuring results, carefully read the complete use instructions.
- This product is intended for household use only. Keep product and batteries away from children.
- People suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, vascular constriction, arteriosclerosis in extremities, diabetes or users of cardiac pacemakers should consult their doctor before measuring their blood pressure themselves, since deviations in blood pressure values may occur in such cases.
- If you are under medical treatment or taking any medication, please consult your doctor first.
- The use of this blood pressure monitor is not intended as a substitute for consultation with your doctor.

Inserting batteries
- Use alkaline batteries, type LR 03 (AAA) as supplied with this product.
- Remove the battery compartment cover (F) and insert two batteries with correct polarity (see symbol in the battery compartment (E)).
- New batteries will provide approximately 200 measurements. Only discard empty batteries. They should not be disposed of in household waste, but at appropriate collection sites or at your retailer.
2x AAA (LR03)
Key rules for accurate blood pressure measurement
- Always take readings at the same time of day, ideally in the morning, under the same conditions.
- Do not measure within 30 minutes after smoking, coffee or tea consumption.
- Take off wrist watch and jewelry before fitting the monitor on the measuring arm.
- Wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating a measurement.
Taking a measurement
- While taking a measurement, sit down, relax, keep still, especially the hand of the measuring arm, do not move or speak.
- Fasten the monitor on the palm side of your wrist, roughly 2 cm below the palm line. Make sure that the cuff (G) fits tightly.
- Press the red I/O button (D).

- Hold the monitor at heart level.
The measurement starts automatically. While measurement is in progress, do not move or speak.

- At the end of the measurement, a beep sounds and the reading is displayed:
Upper (systolic) value
Lower (diastolic) value
Pulse
- Press the start/stop button to turn the product off. Otherwise the product will turn off automatically after 2 minutes.
If at any time, you want to stop the measurement, press the red I/O button.
Memory function
Your blood pressure monitor can store the readings of 90 measurements (BP 1700 model: 60 measurements). Storing is done automatically after each completed measurement. The memory is nonvolatile. This means that you will not lose stored data when changing batteries. The memory cannot be cleared. Once the memory is full, the oldest values will be overwritten.
The BP 1750 model features also an average function to display the average reading of the last three measurements.
Recalling stored and average readings
- To recall stored and average readings, first turn the device off.
- Then press the memory button («memo») (B).

BP 1750: The average of the last three readings will be displayed. The lower display line shows «A-3», indicating that the average value is displayed.
BP 1700: The last reading will be displayed. The lower display line successively shows date, time and pulse of the respective measurement.
- Repeatedly pressing the memory button will call up one by one all stored readings.
- Continuously pressing the memory button will scroll through all stored readings.
- To exit the memory mode, turn the device off by pressing the red I/O button.

Setting time and date
Push the time/date button (C). The lower display line shows «Time» and a flashing digit in the hour position. To adjust the hours, repeatedly push the «memo» button.

- Push button (C) again: The minutes digits will flash. Again, repeatedly push the «memo» button to adjust the minutes.
- Push button (C) again to adjust the date: The lower display line shows «Date» and flashing digits in the month position. Adjust the month by repeatedly pushing the «memo» button.
- Push button (C) again: The day digits will flash. Again, repeatedly push the «memo» button to adjust the day.
- To exit the time and date setting mode, push button (C).
- Otherwise the device automatically turns off after 2 minutes and activates the settings made so far.
Storage and cleaning
Clean the product with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Stains on the cuff (G) can be carefully removed with a damp cloth. Do not wash or dry clean the cuff. Do not store the product in a place exposed to direct sunlight or high humidity.
Calibration
This product has been calibrated at the time of manufacture. If used according to the use instructions, periodic recalibration is not required. If at any time, you question the measuring accuracy, please contact an authorized Service Centre (see package insert for a local Service Centre).
