My unit does not announce anything when the phone rings. What should I do?

First, ensure the volume is turned up. Press the small volume control button repeatedly until you hear a single beep (not two beeps, which indicates off). Also check that batteries are installed correctly with proper polarity, the telephone cord is securely connected to both the wall jack and the unit, and you have subscribed to Caller ID service from your phone company. Wait for the second ring before answering, as CID is delivered between the first and second rings.

How do I change the language from English to Spanish?

Hold down the small key and momentarily press and release the big key. The unit will announce 'January' in the currently selected language. Repeat the process to toggle between English and Spanish.

How can I review missed calls?

Press the big key briefly to hear the most recent call (date, time, number). Press again to go to the next call. To hear all new calls at once, hold the big key for 2 seconds; the unit will announce the number of new calls and then each call in sequence.

How do I erase all calls from the call log?

Hold down the big key for 4 seconds. You will hear a beep confirming that all calls have been erased.

Can I use an AC adapter instead of batteries?

Yes, you can use a compatible AC adapter with 7.5VDC output and negative pin polarity. The unit will work with either batteries or the adapter.

Why does the unit announce 'Number Blocked' or 'Number Unknown'?

'Number Blocked' means the caller has intentionally blocked their number from being displayed. 'Number Unknown' means the Caller ID information was not delivered by the telephone network. This is normal and depends on your caller's settings or the phone service.

What type of batteries should I use?

Use three AAA alkaline batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types. Insert them following the polarity diagram inside the battery compartment.

How do I adjust the volume?

Press and release the small key quickly to cycle through four volume levels: low, medium, high, and off. A single beep indicates the current level; two beeps mean the volume is off. If volume is off, incoming calls are not announced, but manual review will play at medium volume.

Introduction

The SJA9190 lets you know who's calling by announcing the Caller's telephone number when the phone rings, without interrupting what you're doing. If the Caller's telephone number is not available, the unit will announce "Number Unknown." If the Caller has blocked their telephone number, the unit will announce "Number Blocked."

Care and handling of your batteries

Please read these instructions before installing batteries.

Make sure to insert the batteries properly, following the symbols showing you the correct way to position the positive (+) and negative (-) ends of the batteries.

Replace batteries with the size and type specified by the device's manufacturer. Remove all used batteries from the device at the same time, then replace them with new batteries of

Don't dispose of batteries in a fire—they may rupture or leak.

Set up the product by installing three (3) "AAA" batteries inside the battery compartment on the underside of the unit. The unit will also work with a compatible AC Adapter (7.5VDC output with negative pin polarity.)

Plug one end of the telephone cord into the telephone jack on the wall, and the other end into either of the telephone jacks on the back of the unit.

Screening telephone calls while you're at home

The talking Caller ID works with standard (number-only) and deluxe (name and number) Caller ID service available from your local telephone company.

The unit identifies calls by announcing the Caller's ten-digit telephone number between the first and second ring. If the call is coming from a number that has been blocked, it will announce "Number Blocked." If the telephone number is unidentified, the unit will announce "Number Unknown."

If the phone is still ringing, and you didn't hear the number being announced, just press the big key and it will repeat the number.

Audibly Reviewing Calls

The unit stores the last ten calls in memory for audible review. This is convenient for finding out who called while you were out. There are two ways to perform audible call review:

I. Press the big key to hear the date, time, and telephone number of the most recent call in the log. Subsequent pressing and releasing this key will go further back into the call log and announce information about earlier

calls. Pressing the big key while an announcement is in process pre-empts the current announcement and goes to the next call. After the final call is announced, the unit beeps. Continued pressing will start back at the top of the log again.

1. Hold down the big key for 2-seconds, and it will announce the number of new calls followed by the date, time, and telephone number of every new call in the log. After the final call is announced, the unit beeps.

Language Selection

The unit speaks in English and Spanish. To change the selected language, hold down the small key and momentarily press and release the big key. The unit announces “January” in the selected language.

Erasing Calls

To erase the calls in the audible call log, hold down the big key for 4-seconds. The unit beeps confirming the calls have been erased.

Volume Control

There are four volume settings - low, medium, high, and off. To change the volume, press and release the small key very quickly. You may find it helpful to press the key using the eraser-

Answers:

Make sure the volume is turned up. To turn up the volume, press the volume control button (small button) with your finger or a pencil eraser until you hear the unit “beep” at the desired volume level. If you hear the unit beep twice, then the volume is off.

Make sure the batteries are installed properly. The POSITIVE and NEGATIVE ends of the batteries must line up according to the installation diagram inside the battery compartment.

If advance notice isn't possible, the telephone company will notify you as soon as possible. you'll be given the opportunity to correct the problem, and you'll be informed of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.

Your local telephone company may make changes in facilities, equipment or operations that affect the proper functioning of your Caller ID unit. If such changes are planned, you'll be notified and advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC.
