Frequently Asked Questions - F65 NIKON

How to choose the appropriate exposure mode?

The Nikon F65 offers several modes: Auto (fully automatic), Vari-Program (Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports Continuous, Night Scene), P (Program), S (Shutter Priority), A (Aperture Priority) and M (Manual). Select according to the subject: use Sports Continuous for moving subjects, Portrait for people, etc.

How to use the built-in flash?

The flash pops up automatically in Auto or Vari-Program mode when light is insufficient. You can also fire it manually by pressing the flash release button. To change the sync mode, use the Flash sync mode button (front, slow, rear, red-eye reduction).

How to change the lens?

Turn off the camera. Press the lens release button (reference 17 on the diagram) and turn the lens counterclockwise to remove it. To mount a new lens, align the lens index with the mount index and turn until it clicks.

How to activate continuous shooting mode?

Continuous shooting (2.5 fps) is available in Sports Continuous mode (Vari-Program) or Continuous Servo AF mode. Keep the shutter button pressed to take multiple shots in succession. Note that the built-in flash cannot be used in continuous shooting.

How to adjust exposure compensation?

Press the Aperture/Exposure compensation button (reference 1) while turning the command dial to adjust compensation by ±2 EV in 1/2 EV steps. The compensation level is displayed in the viewfinder and on the LCD screen.

How to use the self-timer?

Press the Self-timer/Remote control button (reference 6) to activate the self-timer (10 s). The self-timer icon appears on the LCD screen. Press the shutter, the countdown begins and the photo is taken automatically.

How to clean the SLR camera?

Use a blower to remove dust from the camera body and lens. For the mirror and focusing screen, use a soft brush or a contact-free blower. Avoid direct contact with fingers. Clean the electrical contacts with a dry cloth if necessary.

What types of batteries to use?

The camera uses two CR2 lithium batteries (3V). You can also use the optional MB-17 battery pack that accepts four AA batteries (alkaline, lithium, NiCd or Ni-MH).
Check the battery level on the LCD screen.

How to use the remote control?

The optional ML-L3 (infrared) remote control allows remote triggering. Insert the CR2025 battery, point the remote toward the front sensor of the camera (reference 10) and press the button. Use immediate or 2-second delay mode.

How to interpret viewfinder information?

The viewfinder displays: AF focus points (5 zones), shutter speed, aperture, focus indicator, flash ready, exposure compensation, and analog exposure display. Refer to the manual for detailed meanings of each symbol.

For shooting with complicated lighting or experimenting with various exposure levels, an exposure compensation button lets you compensate exposure within a range of ±2 EV in 1/2 increments.

Combining flash and ambient light enhances detail all around

Slow Sync is activated when flash is used in Night Scene mode, automatically slowing the shutter speed to provide enough exposure of background detail, while throwing natural-looking illumination on the foreground subject.

Rear-Curtain Sync fires the flash just before the second (or rear) curtain of the shutter starts to move. The photographic effect is an action-enhancing stream of light trailing the flash-illuminated subject.

Nikon Speedlights

For more flash power, add as an option a Nikon Speedlight like the SB-80DX or SB-50DX. These extend shooting range, and feature bounce flash, auto zoom and more. The SB-50DX even offers double-flash bounce operation and Wireless Slave Flash function. Only Nikon Speedlights can communicate with the F65 to transmit data like film speed, zoom, aperture, etc.

When connected to an accessory Nikon Speedlight, the SU-4 enables wireless TTL multiple flash control while using the F65's built-in Speedlight as a master unit. You can use several SU-4 Flash Controllers simultaneously, too.
