Precautions

On safety

  • If anything falls into the cabinet, unplug the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
  • The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the mains outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off.
  • Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if you do not intend to use it for an extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug, never by the cord.
  • Caution – The use of optical instruments with this product will increase eye hazard.
  • Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the recorder and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
  • AC power cord must be changed only at a qualified service shop.

On cleaning

Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.

On your TV's color

If the speakers should cause the TV screen to have color irregularity, turn off the TV at once then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes. If color irregularity should persist, place the speakers further away from the set.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Caution: This recorder is capable of holding a still video image or on-screen display image on your television screen indefinitely. If you leave the still video image or on-screen display image displayed on your TV for an extended period of time you risk permanent damage to your television screen. Projection televisions are especially susceptible to this.

On placement

  • Do not install the appliance in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet.
  • Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat buildup.
  • Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs, blankets, etc.) that may block the ventilation slots.
  • Do not install the unit near heat sources such as radiators, or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
  • Do not install the unit in an inclined position. It is designed to be operated in a horizontal position only.
  • Keep the unit and discs away from equipment with strong magnets, such as microwave ovens, or large loudspeakers.
  • Do not place heavy objects on the unit.
  • Place the recorder in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the recorder.
  • Do not block the ventilation slots by putting anything on the recorder. If the ventilation slots on the bottom surface are blocked, the unit can overheat and malfunction.
  • Do not place the recorder on a soft surface such as a rug that might block the ventilation holes on the bottom.
  • Do not place the recorder in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, or mechanical shock.

On operation

  • If the recorder is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lenses inside the recorder. Should this occur, the recorder may not operate properly. In this case, remove the disc and leave the recorder turned on for about half an hour until the moisture evaporates.
  • When you move the player, take out any discs. If you don't, the discs may be damaged.
  • If you have any questions or problems concerning your recorder, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Before playing MP3 recordings, read the following notes.

Notes on MP3

About MP3

  • An MP3 file is audio data compressed by using MPEG1, the audio layer-3 file-coding scheme. We call files that have the ".mp3" file extension "MP3 files."
  • The player can not read an MP3 file that has a file extension other than “.mp3.”
  • Noises may be heard if you play a non-MP3 file that has the “.mp3” extension.

The restriction of playing MP3

  • This unit can play up to 255 files per disc. A disc having more than 255 files cannot be played files.
  • This unit can also display up to 255 folders per disc on the TV screen. A disc having more than 255 folders cannot be displayed folders on the TV screen.
  • The unit may not play MP3 files in the order that you recorded them on the disc.
  • With a multi-session disc, the player plays the all session.
  • It may take over 30 seconds to read the MP3 files, depending on the contents of the disc.

The limitation of indications

  • Up to eight characters are displayed for the name of a track.
  • Characters other than uppercase letters ("A" to "Z"), numericals ("0" to "9") and underscore ("_") may not be displayed, or may be displayed in different characters.
  • The elapsed playing time on the display may not be correct when playing MP3 files.

Tips on recording MP3

• To enjoy high quality sound, convert to MP3 files with a sampling frequency of 44.1kHz and a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps.

To play MP3 files in the order that you recorded them

  • Writing software that is capable of recording MP3 files in numerical and alphabetical order is required.
  • Include a two or three digit number at the beginning of each file name. (e.g. “01,” “02,” ... or “001,” “002,” ...)
  • It's recommended that you use only the root folder (do not create a child folder under the root folder).

Note

During MP3 playing back, the recorder does not output the audio signal via the DIGITAL OPTICAL OUT jack so the audio signal is outputted only via the ANALOG OUT (L/R) jacks.

Glossary

Extension:

An extension is the last three characters that divide a file name by a period. The extension shows the attribution of the file or the software in which the file was created.

Session:

A session is one section on a disc between the beginning of data and the end of written data.

A multi-session disc has more than two sessions.

Note

Depending on the state of MP3 recording, there may be sound skips and noise during playback.

Glossary

Bit rate

Value indicating the amount of video data compressed in a DVD per second. The unit is Mbps (Mega bit per second). 1 Mbps indicates that the data per second is 1,000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate is, the larger the amount of data. However, this does not always mean that you can get higher quality pictures.

Chapter

Sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate the chapter you want.

Dolby Digital

This sound format for movie theaters is more advanced than Dolby Pro Logic Surround. In this format, the rear speakers output stereo sound with an expanded frequency range and a subwoofer channel for deep bass is independently provided. This format is also called "5.1" because the subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel (since it functions only when a deep bass effect is needed). All six channels in this format are recorded separately to realize superior channel separation. Furthermore, since all the signals are processed digitally, less signal degradation occurs.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround

As one method of decoding Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic Surround produces four channels from two-channel sound. Compared with the former Dolby Surround system, Dolby Pro Logic Surround reproduces left-to-right panning more naturally and localizes sounds more precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby Pro Logic Surround, you should have one pair of rear speakers and a center speaker. The rear speakers output monaural sound.

DTS

Digital audio compression technology that the Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed. This technology conforms to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channel is stereo and there is discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio. The good channel separation is realized because the all channel data is recorded discrete and processed in digital.

DVD

A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD.

The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is 7 times that of a CD. Furthermore, the data capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and double-sided DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and double-sided DVD 17 GB.

The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 of its original size. The DVD also uses the variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture.

The audio data is recorded in Dolby Digital as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy more real audio presence.

Furthermore, various advanced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD.

Multi-angle function

Various angles, or viewpoints of the video camera, for a scene are recorded on some DVDs.

Multilingual function

Several languages for the sound or subtitles in a picture are recorded on some DVDs.

Parental Control

A function of the DVD to limit playback of the disc by the age of the users according to the limitation level in each country. The limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is activated, playback is completely prohibited, violent scenes are skipped or replaced with other scenes and so on.

Region Code

This system is used to protect copyrights. A region number is allocated on each DVD system or DVD disc according to the sales region. Each region code is shown on the system as well as on the disc packaging. The system can play the discs that match its region code. The system can also play discs with the “[RE]” mark. Even when the region code is not shown on the DVD, the region limit may still be activated.

Title

The longest sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD; a movie, etc., for a picture piece on video software; or an album, etc., for a music piece on an audio software. Each title is assigned a title number enabling you to locate the title you want.

Track

Sections of a picture or a music piece on a CD. Each track is assigned a track number enabling you to locate the track you want.
