Frequently Asked Questions - BVC1401 BUSH

How do I assemble the vacuum cleaner?
Push the hose connector into the hose inlet socket until it clicks. Attach the extension tube to the hose handle, then fit the floor brush to the tube. For detailed steps, refer to the Assembly section in the manual.
How do I empty the dust container?
Unplug the vacuum cleaner. Press the release button on the dust container to remove it. Hold over a trash bin, remove the filter, empty contents, then clean or replace the filter as needed. Reattach the container securely.
How do I clean the filters?
**Dust container filter**: Wash in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry naturally. Replace every 6 months. **Pre-motor filter**: Remove, shake outside, wash if dirty, dry naturally. Replace every 6-9 months. **Exhaust filter**: Remove cover, wash cloth filter, dry, replace. Do not force dry.
What should I do if the vacuum cleaner loses suction?
First, empty the dust container. If suction remains low, check for blockages in the hose, extension tube, floor brush inlet, or hose inlet socket. Clear any obstructions. Also ensure filters are clean.
How does the cord rewind work?
Always unplug the vacuum cleaner before using the cord rewind. Hold the power cord, press the carry handle/cord rewind button, and carefully guide the cord back into the cleaner. Warning: Keep children and pets away as the cord may whip.
What is the thermal cut-out and how do I reset it?
If the motor overheats, the thermal cut-out switches off the vacuum cleaner. Turn off and unplug. Check for blockages or clogged filters. Wait 30-40 minutes for the motor to cool, then plug in and switch on. If it still doesn't work, wait another 20 minutes.
How do I adjust the floor brush for different surfaces?
Use the selector on the floor brush. Brush down position is for non-carpeted floors or short carpets; brush up position is for all carpet types. For longer pile carpets, brush down increases pickup but requires more force.
Can I use this vacuum cleaner on wet surfaces?
No. This vacuum cleaner is for dry use only. Do not vacuum wet surfaces, pick up wet objects, or use in wet conditions. Doing so may damage the appliance and pose a safety risk.
How do I store the vacuum cleaner?
Use the storage position on the floor brush. Unplug the vacuum cleaner, rewind the cord, and place the floor brush in the storage catch. Store in a dry place. Refer to the Storage section in the manual for details.
What do I do if the vacuum cleaner stops working suddenly?
Check if the thermal cut-out has activated (see related FAQ). Also ensure the power cord is plugged in and the socket is switched on. If it still doesn't work, contact the Bush helpline: 1800 509 394 (Australia) or 0800 450 259 (New Zealand).

Using Your Vacuum Cleaner

This vacuum cleaner has been designed to operate horizontally. Do not operate in a vertical position as this will block the exhaust and cause overheating.

  1. Empty the contents of the dust container, then shake the filter well taking care not to breathe in the dust. If the filter is blocked with fine dust, it may be washed in warm soapy water. Rinse well and allow to dry naturally. DO NOT force dry.

  2. Replace the dust container filter, ensuring that it is latched securely in place. The filter will only fit one way around.

  3. Finally, replace the cover - replacement is the opposite of removal.

Clearing blockages

If the suction still seems to be lower than expected after the dust container bag has been emptied, there may be a blockage in one of the tubes or attachments. Unplug the cleaner and check the following areas for blockages:

• The hose inlet socket (a).
- The joint where the flexible hose connects to the attachments (b).

• The inlet to the floor brush (c).

a b c

If you cannot see the blockage, it may be in one of the knee-joints situated at the end of the plastic hose. To undo these joints, use a flat-bladed screwdriver (or similar tool) to carefully press in the release lugs, then pull the joint apart. Remove any blockage, then push the joint together again until the lugs latch into place.
