General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool. Explanation of symbols Read instruction manual.

Do not use the machine in the rain or leave it outdoors when it is raining.

Remove battery before adjusting or cleaning, and before leaving the machine unattended for any period. 1) Work area safety a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. 2) Electrical safety a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts.

Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock. 3) Personal safety a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. 18 | English d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts.

Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. 4) Power tool use and care a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5) Battery tool use and care a) Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack. b) Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire. c) When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire. d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns. 6) Service a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Machine-specific Safety Warnings

f This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

Carefully remove the machine from its packaging and check if the following parts are complete:

f Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material nor hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the switch is off when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention while operating the hedge trimmer may result in serious personal injury.

When parts are missing or damaged, please contact your dealer.

f Always ensure all handles and guards are fitted when using the machine. Never attempt to use an incomplete machine or one fitted with an unauthorized modification. f Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer always fit the cutting device cover. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce possible personal injury from the cutter blades. f Keep cable away from cutting area. During operation the cable may be hidden in shrubs and can be accidentally cut by the blade.

For Your Safety f Warning: Switch off and remove battery from machine before adjusting or cleaning. f The blades continue to move for a fraction of a second after the hedgecutter is switched off. f Do not touch the moving blades.

Note: The battery is supplied partially charged. To ensure full capacity of the battery, completely charge the battery in the battery charger before using your power tool for the first time.

Due to the intelligent charging method, the charging condition of the battery is automatically detected and the battery is charged with the optimum charging current, depending on battery temperature and voltage.

This gives longer life to the battery and always leaves it fully charged when kept in the charger for storage. Note: The charging procedure is only possible when the battery temperature is within the allowable charging temperature range, see section “Technical Data”. Flashing Battery Charge Indicator 10 The charging procedure is signalled by a flashing battery charge indicator 10. Continuous Lighting of the Battery Charge Indicator 10 Continuous lighting of the battery charge indicator 10 indicates that the battery is fully charged or that the temperature of the battery is not within the allowable charging temperature range, and cannot be charged for this reason. The battery is charged as soon as the allowable charging temperature range is reached.

The lithium ion battery can be charged at any time without reducing its service life. Interrupting the charging procedure does not damage the battery.

When the battery is not inserted, continuous lighting of the battery charge indicator 10 indicates that the mains plug is inserted in the socket and that the battery charger is ready for operation.

Removing the Battery A Charging Advice

Press the battery unlocking button and pull out the battery 6 toward the rear.

With continuous or several repetitive charging cycles without interruption, the charger can warm up. This is not meaningful and does not indicate a technical defect of the battery charger.

The charging procedure starts as soon as the mains plug is plugged into the socket and the battery is then inserted into the battery charger 9. Firstly, place the battery 6 as shown in the figure onto the front of the battery charger (n) and then press the battery 6 down at the rear (o). To remove the battery, proceed in reverse order.

A significantly reduced working period after charging indicates that the battery is used and must be replaced.

The battery is equipped with a NTC temperature control which allows charging only within a temperature range of between 0 °C and 45 °C. A long battery service life is achieved in this manner.

The Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) protects the lithium ion battery against deep discharging. When the battery is run down or discharged, the machine is shut off by means of a protective circuit: The blade no longer moves. f Do not continue to press the On/Off switch after an automatic shut-off of the machine. The battery can become damaged.

Initial Operation Inserting the Battery A Insert the battery into the machine as shown. The battery must be felt to engage. Switching On B n Press and hold the On/Off switch 5 on the rear handle. o Pull the safety switch 4 upward. p Then press the front On/Off switch 3. Switching Off Release the front 3 or rear 5 On/Off switch.

C D E Cuts stems up to 15 mm in thickness (max.).

When cutting, move steadily along the line of cut, so that stems are fed directly into the cutter blades. The double edge cutting blade enables cutting in either direction, or with a side to side motion. Cut the sides of the hedge first, then the top. To cut the sides straightly, we recommend cutting from bottom to top in the direction of growth. Younger stems tend to move outwards when cutting them from top to bottom, resulting in shallow patches or holes in the hedge. To reach a level finish, fasten a piece of string along the length of the hedge at the required height and use as an alignment guide. Cut the hedge just above the string. In order to encourage strong, healthy growth of your hedge, it is recommended when trimming the top, to use the Collecto “clippings-collection” device (accessory). This accessory conveniently gathers the clippings as you cut, allowing them to be easily tipped into a bag or sheet placed alongside the hedge, and thus preventing cut clippings from falling into the hedge. Always take care to avoid cutting into objects such as wire, which could cause damage to the cutting blades and the drive.

f Warning: Hold the hedgecutter away from yourself using both hands. Stand in a secure and stable position. f Power-Tech: The product has a patented feature which works as follows: If the blade stalls on a tough branch, the load of the motor is increasing. The intelligent micro-electronics senses this overload condition and repeatedly reverses the motor, in order to prevent stalling and to cut the branch through. This audible reversing cut action continues for up to 3 s. After cutting through, the machines continues in its normal mode, or in case the overload condition continues the blades automatically stop in the open position (e.g. in case a piece of metal fence accidentally blocks the machine).

Always lubricate the cutting blade with protective spray before storage.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Store the hedgecutter in a secure, dry place out of the reach of children. Do not place other objects on top of the machine.

f Warning: Before any work on the machine itself, remove the battery from the machine.

Note: To ensure long and reliable service, carry out the following maintenance regularly. Regularly check for obvious defects such as loose fixings, and worn or damaged components. Check that covers and guards are undamaged and correctly fitted. Carry out necessary maintenance or repairs before using. If the machine should happen to fail despite the care taken in manufacture and testing, repair should be carried out by an authorised customer service agent for Bosch garden products. In all correspondence and spare parts orders, please always include the 10-digit article number given on the type plate of the machine.

After Usage/Storage f Warning: Switch the machine off and remove the battery. Ensure battery is removed before storage.

The battery is tested according to UN document ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.3 Part III, subsection 38.3. It has effective protection against internal overpressure and short circuiting as well as devices for the prevention of violent rupture and dangerous reverse current flow. The lithium-equivalent content in the battery is below applicable limit values. Therefore, the battery is not subject to national or international regulations pertaining to dangerous mediums, neither as an individual component nor when inserted into a machine. However, the regulations governing dangerous goods may be relevant when transporting several batteries. In this case, it can be necessary to comply with special conditions (e.g., concerning the packaging). The machine, accessories and packaging should be sorted for environmental-friendly recycling. Only for EC countries: Do not dispose of power tools into household waste! According the European Guideline 2002/96/EC for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and its implementation into national right, power tools that are no longer usable must be collected separately and disposed of in an environmentally correct manner.
