Gastroback Design Water Kettle Express 42441 - GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS - 1

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

The appliance is heated electrically via extremely high-powered heating elements. Place the appliance near a suitable wall power outlet to connect the appliance directly to a separately connected and protected mains power supply with protective conductor (earth/ground) connected properly. Ensure that the ratings of your mains power supply correspond to the requirements of the appliance (220/240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, at least 16 A). Do not operate any other appliances via the same power outlet simultaneously to avoid overloading your power supply.

  • Always switch off the kettle via the ON/OFF button, before removing the kettle from the base or unplugging the appliance to avoid extreme load to the electrical connectors of the kettle and base, or power plug and power outlet.
  • The installation of a residual current operated circuit breaker (r.c.c.b.) with a maximum rated residual operating current of 30 mA in the supplying electrical circuit is strongly recommended. If in doubt, contact your electrician for further information.
  • In various foreign countries, the specifications for power supplies are subject to incompatible norms. Therefore it is possible that power supplies in foreign countries do not meet the requirements for safe opera-

tion of the appliance. Thus, before operating the appliance abroad, ensure that safe operation is possible.

- Do not use any desk top multi socket outlet, external timer, remote control systems or extension cord. The power outlet must always be easily accessible so that it would be possible to unplug the appliance immediately in case of any malfunction or danger.

- The pins of the power plug and the power connector in the bottom of the kettle must be smooth and clean without discolourations. Especially keep the power connector (kettle) and power socket (power base) always completely dry. Do not poke in the power socket or power connector. Do not attempt to operate the appliance with the power socket or power connector damaged or polluted in any way to avoid risk of overheating, fire and electric shock.

- Always handle power cords with care. Do not place the appliance on a power cord. The power cord may never touch hot surfaces, sharp edges, or any moving parts. Do not let the plug or power cord hang over the edge of the table or counter. Ensure that no one will pull the appliance by the power cord. Power cords may never be knotted, twisted, pulled, strained or squeezed. Always grasp the plug to disconnect the power cord. Do not touch the appliance or power plug with wet hands with the appliance connected to the power supply.

- To avoid hazard of overheating, fire and electric shock, always unwind the power cord completely for operation and ensure that there are no loops of the power cord left in the cord storage.

- Do not place or immerse the power base, kettle or power cord in water or any other liquid. DO NOT spill or drip any liquids on the power base or the power cord or on the exterior of the kettle to avoid risk of fire and electric shock. When parts of the appliance are leaking during operation and/or liquids accumulate under the power base or run down on the exterior of the appliance, immediately unplug the appliance. Refer to the instructions in chapter 'Solving Problems'.

- Do not place the appliance or any part of it in an automatic dishwasher.

  • Do not place the power base on a metal surface, large bowl, or tray for operation.
  • A cordless water kettle may never be filled while standing on the power base. Always remove the water kettle from the power base for filling and pouring. For filling, always open the lid.

HIGH TEMPERATURE — RISK OF BURNS

⚠ WARNING – The Design Kettle Express is equipped with electric heating elements for heating up drinking water. Thus, the appliance could cause severe scalds, burns and damage, when used improperly.

  • Always hold the kettle level when filled, to avoid spilling. The appliance and the contents may be hot even for some time after operation. Always leave the appliance cool down to room temperature and empty the kettle completely, before cleaning or storing the appliance.
  • Even with the lid properly closed, hot steam and splashes of hot water could escape during operation. Do not hold your face or other parts of your body over or directly near the appliance during operation and while the appliance is still hot to avoid scalds due to steam and splashes.
  • Even the exterior of the appliance an the contents may be very hot during operation and some time thereafter. Only touch the appliance at the operating elements and the handle, when it is hot. Before pouring, wait until the water has stopped boiling and then pour carefully to avoid spilling. If the kettle is tilted too much for pouring, the water could run out besides the spout, thus getting spilled. Always keep the lid closed during operation and when the water is boiling or still very hot, to avoid scalding.
  • Always keep the appliance in sufficient distance to the edge of the table or counter and to other objects. For operation, leave at least 1 m of free space above the appliance and at least 20 cm of free space on each side, to avoid damage due to steam and hot water. Do not operate the appliance under overhanging boards and drop-

lights or near any delicate objects (e.g. curtains).

- Do not hold your hands or any foreign objects (e.g. clothes, brushes) into the interior of the kettle with the appliance connected to the power supply.

WARNING – The appliance is only to be used with the stand provided.

⚠ WARNING – A statement that the heating element surface is subject to residual heat after use.

PROPERTIES OF YOUR DESIGN KETTLE EXPRESS

Your new Design Kettle Express is intended for heating up drinking water to a selectable temperature in the range between 50°C to boiling temperature (100°C). You may cancel any running heating cycle at any time you like by pressing the ON/OFF button or removing the kettle from the power base.

WARNING – Before connecting the appliance to the power outlet, always check, whether the power outlet you are going to use is rated for at least 16 A to avoid overloading the power supply.

NOTE

There is no way to change the set temperature while a heating cycle is running (ON/OFF button is illuminated). If you wish to set another temperature, you must cancel any running heating cycle first (ON/OFF button gets dark). Thereafter, with the appliance in standby mode, you may set a new temperature value.

IMPORTANT - Always close the lid for operation. With the lid open, the temperature control and automatic shut-off will not work properly and there will be high energy loss.

IMPORTANT - Depending on the water hardness of your drinking water, the appliance needs regular de-scaling (see: 'Care and Cleaning'). Otherwise, the temperature control will not work properly, there will be an increasing energy loss, and overheating of the heating elements could occur.

SHORTCUTS

The temperature settings 100^ C (boiling), 80^ C, and 60^ C are available via short-cuts.

NOTE

The shortcuts are available in standby mode only. Additionally, you must start the heating process via the ON/OFF button within 6 seconds. Otherwise the appliance will switch back to standby mode.

The following shortcuts are accessible.

TemperatureShortcut
100°CHold the KEEP WARM button pressed for 2 seconds until 100 is shown on the display.
80°CHold the temperature selection button and KEEP WARM button pressed simultaneously for 2 seconds until 80 is shown on the display.
60°CHold the temperature selection button pressed for 2 seconds until 60 is shown on the display.

KEEP WARM FUNCTION

After heating, with the keep warm function activated, the appliance will switch to the keep warm function automatically, keeping the set temperature for up to 30 minutes. While the keep warm function is running, the ON/OFF button will be illuminated in yellow. After 30 minutes in keep warm the heating elements will be deactivated completely and the ON/OFF button will get dark (standby mode).

By simply pressing the KEEP WARM button, the keep warm function may be activated or deactivated even while a heating cycle is running.

NOTE

When you have set a temperature above 90^ C the keep warm function will always fall back to 90^ C. This is because the water within the kettle will be vaporized too quickly, when boiling for a long period of time, leading to a lot of steam escaping from the appliance. Additionally, the water level could go down below the MIN filling level, thus causing the risk of overheating and high loss of energy. In fact: The higher the set temperature, the higher the energy consumption for keeping warm will be.

NOTE

A beep sounds 3 times each time the water boils to the target temperature. The holding temperature for setting the boiling temperature 100^ and 95^ is 90^ , and for others the holding temperature is the same as for setting the boiling temperature.

So: (for example: the set boiling temperature is 100^ , beeps 3 times when cooking is finished, warming light changes to orange color and when the temperature drops to 90^ , the buzzer beeps to remind you to warm up hold until the warming is finished, a signal tone sounds (5 times).

MEMORY FUNCTION

The appliance will keep the recently set temperature in memory, even after switching off and disconnecting the appliance from the power supply.

IMPORTANT - To save any set temperature in memory, you need to start a heating cycle. Thereafter, you may cancel the heating cycle immediately. Nevertheless,, the set temperature will be kept in memory.

DISPLAY AND SOUNDS

When connecting the appliance to the power supply, a signal sounds and the actual water temperature in the kettle will be shown on the display. However, with the water temperature below 30^ C, two dashes will be shown. After pressing the ON/OFF button, the appliance will start heating immediately up to the set temperature.

During a heating cycle, the ON/OFF button is illuminated in red. As soon as the set temperature is reached, several beeps sound and, with the keep warm function activated, the ON/OFF button changes to yellow indicating the keep warm function. After another 30 minutes the ON/OFF button will get dark indicating the standby mode. An additional acoustic signal sounds. However, the actual water temperature will still be shown on the display.

When pressing the temperature selection button shortly with a heating cycle running the set temperature will flash on the display. If you do not press any button for approx. 6 seconds, the actual water temperature in the kettle will be shown again.

NOTE

If the appliance is idle for approx. 30 minutes, the display is switched off completely and gets dark. To reactivate the display again, simply press any button.

SELF-RESETTING DRY BOIL PROTECTION

The water kettle is fitted with a self-resetting dry boil protection device, which safeguards against overheating of the heating elements. Overheating may be caused by ...

  • too much scale on the heating elements. De-scale the kettle in time (see: 'Care and Cleaning').
  • too little water in the kettle. Always observe the MIN filling level (0.5 litre).

If overheating occurs, all button lights get dark simultaneously and the kettle will automatically switch off the heating elements with an acoustic signal. Thereafter, the kettle will switch off completely. In this case, remove the kettle from the power base and pour out the water. Then leave the kettle cool down by waiting approx. 30 minutes. Thereafter, you can reactivate the appliance. If required, de-scale the kettle.

BEFORE FIRST USE

WARNING – DO NOT let children play with the appliance, or any part of it, or the packaging! Always unplug the appliance before cleaning it, and when it is not in use. Do not place or immerse the appliance (power base and kettle) or power cord in water or other liquids or spill any liquids on the power base, power cord, or the exterior of the kettle. For operation, always unwind the power cord completely to avoid risk of overheating, fire, and electric shock. 2. Before first use and after a longer period of storage, clean all parts of the appliance (see: 'Care and Cleaning'). Grasp into the hollow on the lid to pull the lid open. Thereafter, rinse the interior of the kettle thoroughly with clear tap water.
  3. Select a suitable place for operating the appliance near a sufficient wall power outlet, leaving a distance of at least 20 cm to the edge of the table or counter and to any other object (see: 'General Safety Instructions').
  4. Fill the kettle with 1.7 litres of clear drinking water (MAX marking) and bring the water to the boil (100°C, see: 'Operation'). Thereafter discard the water.
  5. Repeat the recent step.
  6. Then rinse the kettle with clear tap water. The appliance is now ready for use.

OPERATION

WARNING – Always ensure that the appliance and all its parts and accessories are out of reach of young children. The appliance is intended for heating clear drinking water via electrically powered heating elements. Do not attempt to heat the kettle by any other source of heat. Do not fill in any other beverages, food, or any foreign liquids for operation to avoid injuries and damage due to overheating, fire, electric shock, and high temperatures. Improper use or misuse may cause severe injuries and damage. Unplug the appliance and leave it cool down completely, before cleaning the appliance, and when the appliance is not in use.

Do not leave the power base unattended while connected to the power supply. Always unplug the power base when the appliance is not in use.

Before operation, ensure that there are no leaks in the kettle. If water runs out during operation, immediately unplug the appliance (see: 'Solving Problems'). Regularly de-scale the kettle (see: 'Care and Cleaning'). Do not use violence.

Ensure to place the appliance on a level, flat, stable, and dry surface. For operation, do not place the appliance near the edge of the working space or on inclined surfaces. Do not operate the appliance in a tray or tub or on a metal surface to avoid high risk of electric shock, when overflow or splashing of hot water occurs. To avoid overheating, before operation, always fill a sufficient amount of clear drinking water into the kettle (at least 0.5 litres / MIN). Always remove the kettle from the power base and wait until the kettle cooled down, before filling the kettle. Do not operate the appliance with the kettle empty. However, Do not fill in more than the maximum amount (1.7 litres / MAX). If the kettle is overfilled, boiling water may splash out. Always ensure to hold the kettle level, when it is filled. Do not leave water in the kettle after use, to avoid excessive build-up of scale.

  1. Place the power base on a suitable table or counter near an appropriate wall power outlet.
  2. Remove the kettle from the power base and open the lid. To pull the lid open, grasp into the hollow in the lid.
  3. Fill the desired amount of clear drinking water into the kettle, between MIN (0.5 litres) and MAX (1.7 litres). Always keep the kettle level, as soon as it is filled.
  4. Close the lid by pressing the lid down until it settles in place.

IMPORTANT - When filling the kettle, ensure not to spill water onto the exterior of the kettle. If required, wipe dry the exterior of the kettle, before placing the kettle onto the power base. Do NOT operate the kettle with the lid open. Otherwise, the temperature control and automatic shut-off will not work properly. Additionally, there will be high energy loss.

  1. Ensure that the exterior of the kettle is dry. Then place the kettle onto the power base and connect the appliance to the power supply. A beep sounds and the display is illuminated, showing the actual water temperature or two dashes, if the water temperature is below 30^ C. The appliance is now ready for operation (standby mode).

⚠ WARNING – Risk of Scalds: The exterior of the kettle will get hot during operation. Only touch the kettle at the operating elements and handle. Even with the lid closed properly, hot steam could escape from under the lid during operation and some minutes thereafter. Do not hold your face, hands, or other parts of your body, or any delicate objects over or directly beside the kettle, if the kettle is still hot.

NOTE

The kettle is no measuring appliance. There may be differences between the temperature displayed on the display and the actual temperature of the water. Additionally, after heating the actual water temperature may be somewhat higher than the set temperature. Take this into consideration, especially when setting low temperatures and heating small amounts of water.

  1. Set the desired temperature by pressing the temperature selection button shortly several times until the desired temperature will flash on the display. You can set the desired temperature from 50^ C to 100^ C (boiling) in steps of 5^ C.

NOTE

If you wish to heat up to the same set temperature as last time, you can start the heating cycle without any settings. The appliance will always keep the recently used temperature in memory. Additionally, you may use the shortcuts for setting the temperature: 100°C (hold the KEEP WARM button pressed for 2 seconds), 80°C (hold the temperature selection button and KEEP WARM button pressed simultaneously for 2 seconds), or 60°C (hold the temperature selection button pressed for 2 seconds). See also: 'Properties of Your Water Kettle'.

  1. Simply press the ON/OFF button to start the heating cycle. The kettle will start heating immediately. On the display, the actual water temperature will be shown.
  2. If you wish to use the keep warm function, shortly press the KEEP WARM button. You may activate or de-activate the keep warm function during operation just as you like.
  3. As soon as the water reaches the set temperature, the kettle will switch to the next step automatically. With the keep warm function activated, the ON/OFF button

will change to yellow and the kettle will keep the water at the set temperature for 30 minutes. Thereafter, the appliance will switch off the heating elements and return to standby mode with a beep. The ON/OFF button gets dark.

NOTE

You may cancel the operating cycle at any time by removing the kettle from the power base, or by pressing the ON/OFF button. Do not leave the keep warm function run uselessly to avoid excessive energy consumption.

After being idle for approx. 30 minutes (ON/OFF button is dark), the kettle will shut off completely and the display gets dark. Simply press any button to switch on the display again.

WARNING – Hot water and steam could cause severe injuries and damage! Always pour out hot water with special care and ensure not to spill the water or get scalded by the steam.

  1. Carefully pour the hot water. With the water boiling, always wait some seconds for the water to stop boiling. Do not leave the water within the kettle uselessly, to avoid excessive build-up of scale.

Depending on the water hardness and the frequency of usage, the interior of the kettle gets coated with grey or sand-coloured scale. To keep the appliance always ready for usage, and to avoid damage to the heating elements, you should de-scale the kettle in time (see: 'De-scaling the Kettle').

CLEANING THE APPLIANCE

The appliance requires only little cleaning effort. In most cases, it is sufficient to rinse the kettle with clear tap water after use. However, depending on the usage, you should clean the exterior of the appliance regularly too.

  1. Always remove the kettle from the power base, unplug, and leave the appliance cool down to room temperature, before cleaning the appliance.
  2. Open the lid of the kettle and rinse the interior of the kettle thoroughly with tap water. If required, de-scale the kettle (see below).

⚠️ CAUTION – Always keep the power socket in the middle of the power base, the power connector in the bottom of the kettle, and the operating elements in the handle of the kettle completely dry. Avoid spilling or dripping any liquid onto the power base.

  1. Wipe the power base and power cord with a slightly damp cloth. Always ensure to keep the power socket completely dry.
  2. Wipe the exterior of the kettle with a damp cloth, removing any residues of scale and splashes.
  3. Thoroughly wipe dry the power base and exterior of the kettle. Thereafter, leave the parts of the appliance dry naturally for approx. 30 minutes, where they are out of reach of young children.

DE-SCALING THE KETTLE

Do not use any de-scaling solution not recommended in this booklet, to avoid damage to the walls and seals of the kettle.

WARNING – Do not breath-in any vapours escaping from de-scaling solutions to avoid injuries to your respiratory tracts. Always ensure good ventilation during de-scaling. For de-scaling you may use white vinegar.

  1. Fill the kettle with 0.7 litres of vinegar and fill up to the 1.7 L MAX filling level with clear tap water. Leave the kettle stand for at least 1 hour.
  2. With large amounts of scale, to assist de-scaling, you may warm up the solution up to the lowest possible temperature (50°C) and leave the kettle stand until the complete heating cycle finished (approx. 30 minutes). Ensure good ventilation, when warming up the vinegar solution.
  3. Empty the kettle and rinse the interior of the kettle with clear tap water.
  4. Then fill the kettle to the maximum (1.7 litres) and bring the water to the boil

(100°C). Discard the water and rinse the kettle again.

  1. Repeat the complete procedure, if there is still any scale left.
