Frequently Asked Questions - 721-341 Meec Tools

How do I change the blade on the Meec Tools 721-341 saw?
Unplug the saw and press the spindle lock to secure the blade. Use the included wrench to loosen the arbor bolt counterclockwise. Remove the outer flange and old blade, then install the new blade with teeth facing forward. Reattach the flange and tighten the bolt while holding the spindle lock.
What safety precautions should I take before using this saw?
Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Ensure the blade guard is functioning properly. Keep hands away from the blade path, and never operate the saw without the guard in place. Use a trigger lock-off when not cutting.
How do I adjust the cutting depth?
Loosen the depth adjustment lever located near the base. Move the base up or down to achieve the desired depth (blade should extend about 1/4 inch below the material). Tighten the lever securely before cutting.
How do I set the bevel angle?
Loosen the bevel adjust knob on the front of the shoe. Tilt the base to the desired angle (0° to 45°). Use the bevel scale for accurate setting, then retighten the knob.
What maintenance does the saw require?
Regularly clean the air vents with a brush to prevent dust buildup. Inspect the power cord for damage. Lubricate the bevel and depth mechanisms occasionally. Replace the carbon brushes when worn (approximately every 50 hours of use).
How do I use the included rip fence?
Insert the rip fence into the groove on the base plate, aligning the desired width on the scale. Tighten the locking knob. The fence ensures straight cuts parallel to the edge of the workpiece.
What type of blade is recommended for this saw?
This saw accepts 7-1/4 inch blades with a 5/8 inch arbor. For general wood cutting, use a carbide-tipped combination blade with 24 teeth. For finer cuts, use a blade with more teeth.
How should I clean the saw?
Unplug the saw. Use a soft brush to remove sawdust from the blade guard, vents, and motor housing. Wipe the base and handle with a damp cloth. Avoid using solvents that may damage the plastic housing.
Why is the saw not starting?
Check if the power cord is plugged into a working outlet. Ensure the trigger lock-off is released. If the saw still won't start, the carbon brushes may be worn or the motor may be overheated. Allow the motor to cool.
How should I store the saw?
After use, clean the saw and retract the blade guard over the blade. Store in a dry place out of reach of children. Use the blade cover or a protective sleeve to prevent blade damage.

DBAJ O ŚRODOWISKO!

Read the operating instructions carefully before use!

Please retain for future reference.

• Always keep these operating instructions together with the chainsaw.
- Follow the safety instructions in order to prevent accidents which could lead to serious bodily injury or death.
- Follow the safety instructions in order to avoid damage to the product.
- Familiarise yourself with the saw's controls so that you are able to operate it safely.
• Always observe all local safety regulations when operating your chainsaw.
- Incorrect handling can lead to serious personal injury.
- Even with correct usage the saw constitutes some risk. The nature of the saw means that the following risks should be taken into account:

  • Contact with the unprotected sawing chain (cuts).
    – Unexpected, sudden movement of the guide bar (cuts).
    – Hearing damage, if no ear defenders are used.
  • Breathing in harmful particles or exhaust gases from the engine.
  • Skin contact with petrol.

NOISE

WARNING Risk of hearing damage. Wear ear protection. Under normal operating conditions, this device can expose the operator to a noise level of 80 dB (A) or more.

  • Some noise from the machine is unavoidable.
  • Noisy work should be limited to certain periods.
  • Take frequent breaks, and it might be necessary to restrict working hours to a minimum.
  • The user should wear ear defenders, and others in the vicinity might need to do the same.

VIBRATION

WARNING

- The vibration value during actual use of the saw may differ from the value specified in the operating instructions. This can be due to the following factors:

  • Whether the saw is used correctly.
  • Whether sawing is performed correctly and in suitable material.
  • Whether the saw is used according to the instructions
  • Whether the saw chain is sufficiently sharp
  • Whether the handles are fitted correctly.

- If you notice an unpleasant sensation or skin discolouration during use of the machine, stop using it.

- Take regular breaks. Vibration injuries can arise if you do not take frequent breaks of sufficient length.

SAFE USE

  • Always take great care when handling fuel. Always wipe up spillage and move the chainsaw at least ten metres away from the fuelling point before starting
    the engine.
  • Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame (i.e. smoking, open flames, or work that can cause sparks) in the areas where fuel is mixed, poured, or stored.
  • Do not smoke while handling fuel or while operating the chainsaw.
  • Unauthorised persons must not be in the vicinity of the chainsaw when it is started or in use. Keep bystanders and pets out of the work area. Unauthorised persons should be a minimum of 10 metres away when the saw is started or in use.
  • Never start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and planned retreat path from the falling tree.
  • Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands when the engine is running. Use a firm grip with thumb and fingers encircling the chainsaw handles.
  • Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chain when the engine is running. Before starting the engine, make sure the saw chain is not touching anything.
  • Always carry the chainsaw with the engine stopped, the guide bar and saw chain to the rear, and the muffler away from your body.
  • Always inspect the chain for worn, loose, or modified parts before each time of use. Never operate a chainsaw that is damaged, improperly adjusted, or is not completely and securely assembled. Ensure that the saw chain stops moving when the throttle control trigger is released.
  • All chainsaw service, other than the items listed in the operating instructions, should be performed by competent chainsaw service personnel (e.g. if improper

tools are used to remove the flywheel, or if an improper tool is used to hold the flywheel in order to remove the clutch, structural damage to the flywheel could occur which could subsequently cause the flywheel to disintegrate).

• Always shut off the engine before setting it down.
- Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings because slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
- When cutting a branch that is under tension, be alert for spring back to avoid being struck when the tension in the wood fibres is released.
- Keep the handles dry, clean and free of oil or fuel mixture.
- Guard against kickback. Kickback is the upward motion of the guide bar which occurs when the saw chain at the nose of the guide bar contacts an object. Kickback can lead to dangerous loss of control of the chainsaw.
- When transporting your chainsaw, make sure the appropriate guide bar scabbard is in place.
- Place the saw securely during transport to prevent loss of fuel, damage or injury.

BEFORE USE

  • Never operate a chainsaw when you are tired, ill, upset, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that may make you drowsy.
  • Only use the chainsaw in well-ventilated areas. Never start or run the engine inside a closed room or building. Exhaust fumes contain dangerous carbon monoxide.
  • Never cut in high wind, bad weather, when visibility is poor or in very high or low temperatures. Always check the tree for dead branches which could fall during the felling operation.
  • Use safety and slip-resistant footwear, snug fitting clothing and eye, hearing and head protection devices. Use anti-vibration (AV) gloves.
  • The precautionary measures below are recommended to reduce the risk of bodily injury. Even taking these precautionary measures does not guarantee that injury will be avoided.

  • Keep your body warm, especially the head, neck, feet, ankles, hands and wrists.

  • Maintain good blood circulation by performing vigorous arm exercises during frequent work breaks.
  • Do not smoke.

- Keep the saw chain sharp and the saw, including the AV system, well maintained. A blunt chain will increase cutting time, and pressing a blunt chain through wood increases the vibrations transmitted to your hands. A saw with loose components or with damaged or worn AV buffers will also tend to have higher vibration levels.

- Do not use the saw for too long at a time.

KICKBACK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR CHAINSAW USERS

  • Kickback may occur when the tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Tip contact in some cases may cause a lightning fast reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator. If the saw chain pinches along the top of the guide bar, it may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator. Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury.
  • Do not rely exclusively on the safety devices built into your saw. As a chainsaw user you should take a number of precautions to avoid accidents:

  • With a basic understanding of kickback you can reduce or eliminate the element of surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to accidents.

  • Always use both hands to grip the saw. When the engine is running, keep the right hand on the rear handle, and the left hand on the front handle. Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the chainsaw handles. A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control of the saw. Never let go.
  • Make certain that the area in which you are cutting is free from obstructions. Do not let the tip of the guide bar come into contact with a log, branch, or any other obstruction which could be hit while you are operating the saw.
  • Cut at high engine speeds.
  • Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.
    – Follow the manufacturer's sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain.
  • Only use replacement bars and chains recommended by the manufacturer.

CHECKING THE FUNCTION OF THE CLUTCH

Before each use, check that there is no chain movement when the chainsaw runs at idling speed.

ADJUSTING CARBURETTOR

The carburettor may only be adjusted by an authorised repair centre.

CHAIN BRAKE

  • The chain brake is a device which stops the chain instantaneously if the chainsaw recoils due to kickback.
  • The brake is normally activated automatically through inertial force. It can also be activated manually by pushing the brake lever/front handle guard down toward the front.
  • When the brake is active, a white cone protrudes from the base of the brake lever.
  • To release brake, pull up the front handle guard/chain brake toward the front handle until it clicks into place.
  • When the brake is activated, release the throttle lever to slow down the engine speed.

NOTE:

  • Continuous operation with the brake engaged will generate heat from the clutch and may cause problems.
    • Always check that the brake is working before using the saw.

Checking the brake

  1. Turn off the engine.
  2. Holding the chainsaw horizontally, release your hand from the front handle, hit the tip of the guide bar against a stump or a piece of wood (Figure 3). The brake should now be activated. How long this take varies according to bar size.

3

BEFORE SAWING

  • Firstly, read the "Safe use" section. Always follow all safety regulations.
  • The first time you use the chainsaw you should choose a simple task. This will help you to get accustomed to your new saw.
  • The chainsaw must only be used for cutting wood. It is forbidden to cut other types of material. Vibrations and kickback vary with different materials and the requirements of the safety regulations would not be respected.
  • Do not use the chainsaw as a lever for lifting, moving or splitting objects.
  • Never mount it on a stand. It is forbidden to hitch tools or applications to the P.T.O. that are not

specified by the manufacturer.

- It is not necessary to force the saw into the cut. Only apply light pressure while running the engine at full throttle.

- The saw should be inspected before use and after dropping or other impacts to identify significant damage or defects.

• Racing the engine with the chain seized in a cutaway can damage the clutch system.

- If the saw chain is stuck, never try to force it out. Use a wedge or a lever to open the cut

NOTE:

- The spiked bumper must always be in place. Push the spiked bumper into the tree trunk by using the rear handle. Push the front handle in the direction of the cutting line. If necessary, the spiked bumper should remain to facilitate further sawing. Using the spiked bumper when cutting trees and thick branches can enhance your safety and reduce vibrations.

- If you detect an obstacle between tree and chainsaw, turn off the machine. Wait until it stops completely. Wear safety gloves and remove the obstacle. If the chain has to be removed, follow the relevant instructions in the manual. A trial run must be conducted after the chain has been cleaned or put on again. In the event of vibration or unusual noises, stop using the saw immediately and contact Julia's service department.

PROTECTION AGAINST KICKBACK

- This saw is also equipped with a chain brake that will stop the chain in the event of kickback if operating properly.

- You must check the chain brake operation before each usage: run the saw at full throttle for 1 or 2 seconds, then push the front hand guard forward. The chain should stop immediately with the engine at full speed. If the chain is slow to stop or does not stop at all, then replace the brake belt and clutch drum before use.

- It is extremely important that the chain brake is checked for proper operation before each use and that the chain is properly sharp (figure 6) as it significantly reduces the risk of kickback (figure 7). Removal of the safety devices, inadequate maintenance, or incorrect replacement of the bar or chain may increase the risk of serious personal injury due to kickback.

FELLING A TREE

WARNING Prior to felling, be sure to warn everybody in the vicinity.

  1. Decide the felling direction considering the wind, lean of the tree, location of heavy branches, ease of job after felling, and other factors.
  2. While clearing the area around the tree, arrange a good foothold and retreat path.
  3. Make a notch cut one-third of the way into the tree on the felling side.
  4. Make a felling cut from the opposite side of the notch and at a level slightly higher than the bottom of the notch.

LOGGING

WARNING

• Always ensure your foothold as well as stability of the tree.
- Be alert to the fact that cut logs can overturn or roll away.
- Read the instructions in the "Safe Operation" section to avoid kickback.
- Before starting work, check the direction of bending force inside the log to be cut.
- Always finish cutting from the opposite side of the bending direction to prevent the guide bar from being caught in the cutaway.
