Frequently Asked Questions - UMK-7 Citronic

How do I connect the Citronic UMK-7 microphone to my mixer or audio interface?
Connect the XLR cable from the microphone to a compatible XLR input on your mixer or audio interface. Ensure the channel is turned down before connecting. No phantom power is required for this dynamic microphone.
Does the UMK-7 require phantom power?
No, the Citronic UMK-7 is a dynamic microphone and does not require phantom power. Phantom power is only needed for condenser microphones.
What is the polar pattern of the UMK-7 and how does it affect recording?
The UMK-7 has a cardioid polar pattern, which picks up sound primarily from the front and rejects noise from the sides and rear. This is ideal for live vocals and reducing feedback.
Can I use the UMK-7 for instruments like guitar amps or drums?
Yes, the UMK-7 can be used for instrument miking, especially guitar amps and snare drums, due to its dynamic design and cardioid pattern. However, it is primarily designed for vocals.
How should I clean and maintain the UMK-7 microphone?
Wipe the exterior with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use water or cleaning solvents. The grille can be gently cleaned with a soft brush. Store in a dry place.
What should I do if there is no sound coming from the microphone?
Check that the XLR cable is fully connected to both the microphone and the audio input. Verify that the mixer channel is unmuted and the gain is turned up. Test with a different cable to rule out cable issues.
Is the UMK-7 compatible with wireless systems?
The UMK-7 is a wired microphone with an XLR output. To use it wirelessly, you would need a wireless transmitter that accepts an XLR input, such as a belt-pack transmitter.
How can I reduce feedback when using the UMK-7 on stage?
Position the microphone close to your mouth, point it away from monitor speakers, and lower the gain on the channel. Using a cardioid pattern helps reject feedback from the rear.
What is the warranty period for the Citronic UMK-7?
Citronic typically offers a 2-year warranty for their microphones. Check your purchase documentation for specific terms and conditions.
Are replacement parts available for the UMK-7, such as grilles or capsules?

USER MANUAL UMK-7 Citronic

The UMK-7 is a complete studio microphone outfit for recording vocals and instruments into a computer-based recording suite via USB. The kit comprises a USB condenser microphone, shock-proof holder, foam pop filter, vocal pop screen, angle-poise boom arm with worktop clamp and a USB A to B connection lead.

Setting up

Attach the boom arm clamp to a desk or worktop by opening the clamp to slide onto the edge of the worktop with the cone on the top and tightening the underside screw clamp until it is firmly attached. The boom arm fits onto the clamp by slotting the black tube end into the hole in the cone at the top of the clamp.

To mount the microphone on the boom arm, push the microphone (connector end first) into the shock-proof holder until it is held firmly and then screw the base of the holder onto the threaded adaptor on the silver end of the boom arm.

Adjust and tighten the base of the mic holder at the required angle and use the angle poise mechanism to position the microphone where needed.

Front of Mic Capsule USB-B Connector

If required, place the foam pop filter over the microphone grille and/or attach the gooseneck clamp of the pop screen to the angle-poise boom arm for positioning the screen in front of the microphone. In addition to reducing pops and sibilance, this screen can be used to help maintain the mouth distance from the microphone for a more consistent vocal level.

Connect the microphone to a USB port on the computer using the supplied lead and search for a USB audio device or "USB PnP Sound Device" in the computer hardware settings. Depending upon the software being used, select this as the input device to enable recording from the UMK-7 microphone. The USB provides power to the microphone and delivers the sound it picks up as high-quality digital audio to the computer.

Check that the microphone is positioned correctly by increasing the volume whilst speaking into the microphone and checking the output to the computer. The voice should be clear and not muffled. If the voice is muffled, turn the microphone around until the front of the capsule is facing toward you, which should produce more detail and full frequency response.
