Frequently Asked Questions - SFP-10B ComNet

How do I install the ComNet SFP-10B module?
First, flip the bale clasp up. Then line up the SFP module with the port and slide it in. The module will lock in place when properly installed. Remove rubber plugs from optical bores before attaching fiber.
Can the SFP-10B be used with any ComNet switch?
Yes, the SFP-10B is designed to work with ComNet managed and unmanaged switches, as well as media converters, when using the SFP interface.
What is the maximum distance supported by the SFP-10B?
Distance depends on the fiber variant. For multimode, up to 300 m; for single mode, up to 120 km. Check the specific wavelength and optical power rating of your module.
Is the SFP-10B hot-swappable?
Yes, you can insert or remove the SFP module without powering down the host device. However, always follow ESD precautions.
How should I clean the optical connectors?
Use a lint-free cleaning swab with isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the fiber end faces before connection. Do not touch the optical surfaces with fingers.
What should I do if the SFP module is not working?
Check the bale clasp is fully closed, ensure the module is fully inserted, and clean the optical connections. If still not working, try a different SFP port or contact ComNet support.
Does the SFP-10B require a special power supply?
No, the module draws power from the host device through the SFP interface. Typical consumption is less than 1 watt.
Can I use the SFP-10B with copper cables?
Yes, the SFP-10B is available in copper (RJ45) versions for distances up to 100 meters using standard Ethernet cables.
What is the warranty on the SFP-10B?
ComNet offers a lifetime warranty on SFP modules when used with ComNet SFP-configurable products. Retain proof of purchase.
How do I remove the SFP-10B module?
Disconnect the fiber cable, open the bale clasp by pressing it down, then grasp the module and carefully pull it out. Insert dust plugs into the optical bores and store in anti-static packaging.

COPPER AND OPTICAL FIBER ETHERNET CONNECTORS

The ComNet™ selection of Small Form-Factor Pluggable modules allow for an optical or copper interface when using a ComNet managed switch, unmanaged switch or media converter.

These interchangeable SFP modules are available for use with copper media, or multimode and single mode optical fiber. The optical fiber SFP modules are available in fast Ethernet one and two fiber versions and Gigabit one and two fiber versions. They also are available with LC or SC optical connectors.

The ComNet SFP modules have different wavelengths and optical power to offer distances from 300 meters to 120 kilometers. These SFP modules are industrially rated to perform in the most difficult operating environments.

The ComNet SFP interface is required for use with all ComNet SFP configurable products to qualify for the ComNet Lifetime Warranty.

See Page 2 for complete installation instructions.

SFP-(X) INSTALLATION/REMOVAL

CAUTION:

  • The Fiber Optic sub-module is static sensitive. Use static handling precautions when installing or removing the sub-module.
  • Protect your SFP sub-modules by inserting clean dust plugs into the SFP sub-modules after the optical fiber is extracted from them. Be sure to clean the optic surfaces of the optical fiber before you plug them back into the optical bores of another SFP sub-module. Avoid getting dust and other contaminants into the optical bores of your SFP sub-modules. The optics will not work correctly when obstructed by dust.

SFP Module:

  • The SFP sub-module installs in the connector cage located on the unit corresponding to the port assignment to be used.
  • The SFP sub-module is keyed and can only be installed in one orientation.
  • The SFP sub-module (see Figure 1) has a bale clasp that you use to secure the SFP sub-module in a connector cage.

The photos used in the following sequence are intended to aid in the installation and removal of the SFP sub-module and may not match your particular model.
