Frequently Asked Questions - IR02V BLACK & DECKER

How do I fill the water tank?
Tilt the iron and use a clean measuring cup to pour water into the opening until it reaches the MAX level. Do not overfill. For best results, use normal tap water or a 50/50 mix of tap and distilled water if your water is very hard. Avoid perfumed or scented additives.
What do the SmartSteam™ numbers mean?
The SmartSteam™ dial combines temperature and steam level. Settings 1-3 (Synthetic, Nylon/Silk, Polyester) are for low heat with no steam. Settings 4-6 (Blend, Wool, Cotton/Linen) allow medium to high heat with steam. Always check garment labels.
Why is no steam coming out?
Ensure the SmartSteam™ dial is set to 4-6 for steam. Make sure the water tank is filled to MAX. Allow the iron to fully preheat (about 2 minutes) – the anti-drip feature prevents steam if the soleplate is too cool.
Can I use distilled water?
It is recommended to use untreated tap water. If your water is very hard, you can mix 50% tap water with 50% distilled water. Do not use 100% distilled water or softened water, as this may cause buildup.
How do I clean the iron?
Unplug and let it cool completely. Wipe the soleplate and outer surface with a soft damp cloth. Use mild dish soap if needed. Never use abrasive cleaners or vinegar. After cleaning, dry thoroughly and steam over an old cloth to remove residue.
How should I store the iron?
Set the dial to MIN, unplug, and let cool. Empty the water tank by opening the fill door and turning the iron upside down over a sink. Wrap the cord loosely around the heel and clip the plug. Always store vertically on the heel to prevent leaks.
What does the Spray Mist button do?
Pressing the Spray Mist button releases a fine spray of water to dampen tough wrinkles. It works at any temperature setting. Avoid spraying silk.
Why is water dripping from the soleplate?
This occurs if the soleplate is not hot enough to turn water into steam. Allow the iron to heat up for a minute or two at the desired setting before using. The anti-drip feature should minimize dripping once hot.
What should I do if the iron stains my clothes?
Staining may come from residue buildup. Empty water after each use, avoid descaling agents or scented water, and clean the soleplate regularly. If using starch, clean the iron afterward.
How can I get warranty service?
Keep your receipt as proof of purchase. Call 1-800-231-9786 (US and Canada) or visit www.prodprotect.com/applica for a replacement product. Do not return to the store or mail the product.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

When using your iron, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the following:

  • READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING.
  • Only use iron for intended use.
    • To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids
    • Always turn the iron to MIN setting before plugging in or unplugging from the outlet. Never pull on the cord to disconnect from the electrical outlet; instead grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
  • Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let iron cool completely before putting away.
    • Always disconnect iron from electric outlet before filling with or emptying water, cleaning, and when not in use.
  • Do not operate the iron if it has been dropped, if there are visible signs of damage to the iron or its cord, or if it's leaking. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not dissemble the iron; take it to a qualified service person for examination and repair, or call the appropriate toll-free number on the cover of this manual. Incorrect reassembly can cause risk of electric shock when the iron is used.
  • Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave iron unattended when plugged in or on an ironing board.

  • Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn the iron upside down - there may be hot water in the reservoir. Avoid rapid movement of iron to minimize hot water spillage.

  • The iron must be used and rested on a stable surface.
  • When placing the iron on its stand, ensure that the surface on which the stand is placed is stable.
  • This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
    • Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
  • To avoid circuit overload, do not operate another high wattage appliance on the same circuit.
  • If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, a minimum 10-ampere cord should be used. Cords rated for less amperage can result in a risk of fire or electrical shock due to overheating. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that it cannot be pulled or tripped over.

GETTING STARTED

FILLING THE WATER TANK

  1. Tilt the iron and using a clean measuring cup, pour water into opening until the water reaches the MAX level mark on the water tank. Do not overfill.
Tip: This iron is designed to use normal tap water. Do not use water processed through a home softening system. If your water is very hard, you can use a mixture of 50% tap water and 50% distilled water to avoid build-up. It is not recommended to use water with perfumes or scented additives.
  2. Stand the iron on the heel rest.
  3. To refill at any time during the ironing process, unplug the iron and follow the above procedure.
