How do I clean the coffee maker?

Unplug and let cool. Wash the permanent filter, carafe, and lid in warm, sudsy water or on the top rack of a dishwasher. Wipe the reservoir cover with a damp cloth.
For mineral deposits, run a vinegar cycle: fill reservoir to 2-cup mark with white vinegar, add water to 5-cup line, brew halfway, let soak 15 minutes, then finish brewing. Rinse by brewing fresh water.

How much coffee should I use?

Start with 1 level tablespoon of medium grind coffee per cup. Adjust to taste.

Can I use paper filters instead of the permanent filter?

Yes, you can use a standard basket-style paper filter. The permanent filter is included and reusable.

Why is my coffee not hot enough?

Ensure the carafe is placed properly on the KEEP HOT plate. If the plate is dirty, clean it. Also, pre-warming the carafe with hot water can help maintain temperature.

Can I brew less than 5 cups?

Yes, you can brew any amount up to 5 cups. Use the water level markings inside the reservoir to measure the desired amount.

Does the coffee maker have an automatic shut-off?

No, the DCM601B does not have an automatic shut-off feature. You must turn it off manually using the On/Off switch.

What does the red indicator light mean?

The red light comes on when the unit is turned on and brewing. It stays on as long as the appliance is powered.

How often should I descale the coffee maker?

Descaling with vinegar is recommended every 3 months to remove mineral deposits caused by hard water.

What should I do if the carafe cracks?

Do not use a cracked carafe. Contact the manufacturer for replacement parts or call 1-800-738-0245 (US/Canada) for accessories.

Can I use extension cord?

Yes, but only if the cord's electrical rating is at least as high as the appliance. Avoid draping over countertops to prevent tripping.

POLARIZED PLUG (120V Models Only)

This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug, if it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way.

TAMPER-RESISTANT SCREW

Warning: This appliance is equipped with a tamper-resistant screw to prevent removal of the outer cover. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not attempt to remove the outer cover. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Repair should be done only by authorized service personnel.

ELECTRICAL CORD

a) A short power-supply cord (or detachable power-supply cord) is to be provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.

b) Longer detachable power-supply cords or extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use.

c) If a long detachable power-supply cord or extension cord is used,
1) The marked electrical rating of the detachable power-supply cord or extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance,
2) If the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord should be a grounding-type 3-wire cord, and
3) The longer cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over.

Note: If the power supply cord is damaged, it should be replaced by qualified personnel or in Latin America by an authorized service center.

How to Use

This unit is for household use only.

GETTING STARTED

• Remove all packing materials and any stickers from the product.
• Remove and save literature.
• Open one-piece cover for water reservoir and brew basket.
• Pour fresh cold water up to 5-cup level mark into the water reservoir.
• Place permanent filter into brew basket.
• Uncoil power cord and plug into standard electrical outlet.
• Brew water through appliance without adding coffee grounds. This removes any dust or residue that may remain in the system during the manufacturing process.
• Discard the water from the carafe.
• Wash all removable parts as instructed in CARE AND CLEANING section of this manual.
• Turn off the appliance; unplug it and allow appliance to cool down.

BREWING COFFEE:

1. Open one-piece cover for water reservoir and permanent filter basket.
2. Pour fresh cold water up to desired level mark into water reservoir.
3. Insert permanent filter into brew basket.
4. Add desired amount of ground coffee.

Note: Not sure how much coffee to use. Begin by using 1 level tablespoon of medium grind coffee for each cup of coffee to be brewed.

1. Close lid securely.

2. Place empty carafe on the KEEP HOT plate.

3. Plug cord into standard electrical outlet.
4. Press OFF/ON button; red light comes on and brewing begins.

5. Replace the carafe on the KEEP HOT plate when not serving to keep coffee hot.

6. Unplug appliance when not in use.

COFFEE BREWING TIPS

• Stir coffee in carafe before serving to evenly distribute the flavor.
• For variety add a 1-inch piece of lemon or orange peel to the coffee grounds before brewing.
• Add a 2-inch piece of vanilla bean to the sugar bowl. You'll be surprised at how good it tastes.
• Keep your coffee maker very clean, you'll be pleased with the flavor

Care and Cleaning

This appliance contains no user-serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel.

CLEANING

1. Be sure the unit is unplugged and cooled.
2. Open the one-piece cover, remove the permanent filter basket (lift straight up), and discard the grounds.
3. Wash the filter, carafe and carafe lid in the dishwasher, top-rack only or hand-wash in warm, sudsy water.
4. To clean inside of reservoir cover, open the one-piece cover allowing it to rest in the open position.

1. Pull water showerhead out from under the guide, wipe surfaces with a damp cloth, then place water spreader under guide and close the cover (B).

Mineral deposits left by hard water can clog your coffeemaker. Cleaning with vinegar is recommended every 3 months.

USING VINEGAR

1. Pour white vinegar into water reservoir up to 2-cup level on water window.
2. Add cold water up to 5-cup line.
3. Set empty carafe on the KEEP HOT plate.
4. Turn on coffeemaker and let half the cleaning solution brew into carafe (until water level goes down to around "3"). Turn off coffeemaker and let it soak for at least 15 minutes to soften the deposits.
5. Turn on coffeemaker and brew remaining cleaning solution into carafe.
6. Turn off coffeemaker, empty carafe and wash permanent filter.
7. Fill reservoir with cold water to 5-cup line, replace empty carafe, then turn on coffeemaker for a complete brew cycle to flush out remaining cleaning solution. You may have to repeat this to eliminate the vinegar smell/taste.
8. Wash the brew basket, the permanent filter and carafe as instructed in CLEANING.
