How do I calibrate the PCE Instruments PH 17 pH meter?

Perform a 2-point calibration using pH 4.00 and pH 7.00 buffer solutions. Rinse the electrode with distilled water, immerse in pH 7.00, wait for stable reading, press CAL, then repeat with pH 4.00. For best accuracy, use a third point at pH 10.00.

How often should I recalibrate the pH meter?

Recalibrate before each series of measurements or at least once daily. Also recalibrate if the electrode has been dry or after measuring strong acids or bases.

What kind of batteries does the PH 17 use?

It uses two 1.5V AAA batteries. Battery life is approximately 300 hours of continuous use.

How do I replace the electrode?

Unscrew the old electrode clockwise (looking from front), pull it out, and screw in a new pH electrode with BNC connector. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated to maintain waterproofing.

Why is the reading unstable?

Unstable readings may be due to a dirty electrode, low battery, or air bubbles on the electrode. Clean the electrode with distilled water, replace batteries if needed, and recalibrate.

How do I store the meter when not in use?

Store the electrode in a storage solution (KCl 3M) or pH 4.00 buffer. Do not let it dry out. Remove batteries if storing for long periods.

Is the meter waterproof?

Operation

1. Remove the protective cap.
2. First rinse the electrode with distilled water, and suck it with filter-paper.
3. Turn the meter on by pressing the ON key.
4. Immerse the ph meter electrode in the solution to be tested.
5. Stir gently and wait for the reading to stabilize.
6. Press the "HOLD" key, the reading is be kept. When repeat measuring, please press the "HOLD" key again, it automatically relieves the hold condition.
7. After use, rinse the electrode with water to minimize contamination. Turn the meter off by pressing the OFF key.
8. Always replace the protective cap after use.

PH Calibration

1. Immerse the electrode in pH 6.86(pH7.00) buffer solution of phosphate, and gently shake it.
2. Allow the reading to stabilize and with a small screwdriver turn the calibration trimmer until the display shows "6.86"("7.00"). Rinse the electrode with distilled water, and suck it with filter-paper.
3. Immerse the electrode in pH4.01 or pH9.18(pH10.0) the buffer solution of borax.
4. After about one minute, until the display shows "4.01" or "9.18" ("10.0").

Important:

The instrument's pH range must be re-calibrated whenever:

The electrode has been used(laid) for long time from the last calibration.

The electrode has been used in particularly taxing conditions.

The utmost accuracy is required.

Battery Install

If the meter can not be switched on or the display fades, To change batteries, takes down the meter back battery case and replaces batteries. Pay attention to the polarity of battery.
