How do I connect the AKG Perception live microphone?

Use a balanced XLR cable to connect to a mixer or amplifier with a balanced input. For unbalanced inputs (1/4" jack), use a cable with female XLR to 1/4" TS plug. Keep unbalanced cables shorter than 16 ft (5 m) to avoid interference.

Does the microphone require a battery or phantom power?

No, the Perception live is a dynamic microphone and does not need any power supply. It is passive.

How do I clean the microphone?

Wipe the body with a soft cloth moistened with water. For the internal windscreen, unscrew the front grill, remove the windscreen, wash it in soap suds, let it dry overnight, then reassemble.

What is the difference between the Perception live models?

P2 and P4 are instrument microphones with cardioid pattern; P3S adds an on/off switch; P5/P5S have supercardioid pattern for vocals and also feature a switch. Frequency range and max SPL vary slightly.

Why is there no sound from the microphone?

Check that the mixer channel fader is up, the microphone is securely connected, the cable is not damaged, and for models with a switch (P3S, P5S), ensure it is set to 'ON'.

Can I use the microphone for vocals?

The P5/P5S models are designed for solo vocals. P3S can be used for backing vocals. P2 and P4 are for instruments.

What polar pattern does the microphone have?

P2, P4, and P3S have a cardioid pattern. P5 and P5S have a supercardioid pattern, which offers tighter rear rejection.

How do I avoid distortion?

Set the gain control on your mixer or amplifier correctly. The microphone can handle high SPL (up to 157 dB for P2), so distortion is usually from improper gain staging.

3 Application

Connecting the microphone

The microphone provides a balanced output on a 3-pin male XLR connector:

You can connect the microphone either to a balanced or an unbalanced microphone input.

• To connect the microphone to a balanced input (XLR connector), use a commercial XLR cable.
• To connect the microphone to an unbalanced microphone input (1/4" jack), use a cable with a female XLR connector and a 1/4" TS jack plug. Please note that unbalanced cables may pick up interference from stray magnetic fields near power or lighting cables, electric motors, etc. like an antenna. This may cause hum or similar noise when you use a cable that is longer than 16 feet (5 m).

Switching the microphone on/off

Microphones with name suffix "S" have an on/off switch.

1) To switch the microphone on, slide the on/off switch toward the front grill ("ON" position)
2) To switch the microphone off, slide the on/off switch toward the microphone cable ("OFF" position)

To prevent unwanted bursts of noise, be sure to switch the microphone off before connecting or disconnecting the microphone cable.

4 Cleaning

Microphone

- Use a soft cloth moistened with water to clean the surface of the microphone body.

Internal Windscreen

1) Unscrew the front grill from the microphone CCW.
2) Remove the windscreen from the grill and wash the windscreen in soap suds.
3) Allow the windscreen to dry overnight.
4) Replace the windscreen in the front grill and screw the front grill on the microphone CW.

6 Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Remedy
No sound	Channel or master fader on mixer, or volume control on amplifier is at zero.	Set channel or master fader on mixer or volume control on amplifier to desired level.
