INSTRUCTION FOR USE

FIRST TIME USE

The barbecue should be heated up and the charcoal should be kept red hot for at least 30 minutes prior to the first cooking operation.

This procedure is necessary for the first time only in order to burn out residues caused by the manufacturing process.

GETTING STARTED:

- For grilling/slow cooking/smoking you can use charcoal or briquettes as a heat source.

- During grilling/slow cooking/smoking you can add charcoal during the process. If you use briquettes you cannot add these during the process. You need to lighten the briquettes separately until they are completely lit. If you add fresh briquettes to the fire these new briquettes will develop a negative flavour to the food.

- Put the charcoal in the centre of the charcoal pan.

- Start the fire while leaving lid, upper layer body and drip pan off.

- Allow charcoal to burn for about 25 minutes. Do not cook before the fuel has a coating of ash.

- Spread coals evenly over the charcoal pan to obtain even fire.

- Never start grilling while there are still flames in the bowl.

DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES

a. FAST GRILLING - 1 segment - 2 segments - 3 segments

4Grill 7062449 - DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES - 1

- See assembly guide page 16 + 17.

GRILLING & BBQ are cooking methods. The generally accepted differ-

ences between barbecuing and grilling are cooking durations and the types of heat used. Grilling is generally done quickly over moderate-to-high direct heat that produces little smoke, while barbecuing is done slowly over low, indirect heat and the food is flavoured by the smoking process.

b. SMOKING - 3 segments

4Grill 7062449 - DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES - 2

– See assembly guide page 18.

Smoking is the process of flavouring, cooking, or preserving food by exposing it to smoke from burning or smouldering material, most often woodchips.

c. SLOW COOKING - 3 segments

4Grill 7062449 - DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES - 3

– See assembly guide page 19.

Slow cooking is a cooking technique using temperatures of 45 to 85 °C (113 to 185 °F) for a prolonged time to cook food.

d. FIRE PIT - 1 segment - 2 segments - 3 segments

4Grill 7062449 - DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION POSSIBILITIES - 4

– See assembly guide page 20.

The common feature of fire pits is that they are designed to contain fire and prevent it from spreading.

The firepits only to be used including the special insert (Part R).

Operating your barbecue

  1. Decide at what height you want to use the 4GRILL.

a. Low:

  1. Remove the lid before building the fire.

  2. Make sure air vents at bottom are not blocked.

Note: For proper use, remove accumulated ashes from the bottom of the charcoal pan if present (only after the coals are fully extinguished).

  1. When using charcoal briquettes form a pyramid and douse the briquettes/charcoal with firelighters complying with EN1860-3!

  2. Recommended maximum amount of charcoal briquettes is up to 1/3 of the charcoal pan, which is approx. 200 pcs briquettes.

  3. Once coals are covered with a light grey ash (usually after 25 to 30 minutes), spread the coals with long handled tongs.

  4. When removing the barbecue lid during cooking, lift to the side, rather than straight up. Lifting straight up may create suction, drawing ashes up onto your food.

  5. At no times place the lid on the fire pit insert or on any of the 4GRILL segments in this consideration (means charcoal pan in top position), as this will damage the lid surface finish permanently.

SMOKING AND SLOW COOKING CONFIGURATION

- See assembly guide page 18 + 19.

4Grill 7062449 - SMOKING AND SLOW COOKING CONFIGURATION - 1

4Grill 7062449 - SMOKING AND SLOW COOKING CONFIGURATION - 2

The difference between slow cooking and smoking is that for smoking moistened wood

is added to the fire. This will start to smoke adding a certain flavour to the food, depending on the type of wood used for smoking.

a. Do not overfill the drip pan (Part N) with water, see the max. filling indicator on the drip pan. Use hot tap water to fill the drip pan.

b. For long term smoking and slow cooking adding water to the water/drip pan (Part N) might be necessary. This can be done by opening the front door (Part H) and poor slowly hot tap water into the drip pan by using a funnel or container with spout.

4Grill 7062449 - SMOKING AND SLOW COOKING CONFIGURATION - 3

WARNING! When opening the front door hot air or steam can flow out!

c. By opening or closing the air vent slider on the lid (Part F) the air flow can be regulated in the 4GRILL. Open: more air, higher temperature. Closed: less air, lower temperature.
d. Adding charcoal or briquettes, during slow cooking or smoking, can be done via the front door (Part H). Add carefully the charcoal or briquettes onto the fire in the fire pan. Rough adding can cause ashes

to swirl in the 4GRILL and getting on your food!

e. For smoking, woodchips need to be added to the fire. After selecting the type of woodchips for smoking, the woodchips needs to be moistened by putting those in water for 30 to 60 minutes. These moistened woodchips can then be placed on to the burning fire.

Types of woodchips for smoking:

FOOD WOOD TYPE CHARACTERISTICS
Pork, chicken, beef, wild game, cheeses.Hickory Pungent, smoky, bacon-like flavor.
Pork, chicken, lamb, fish, cheeses.Pecan Rich and moresubtle than hickory, but similar in taste. Burns cool, so ideal for very low heat smoking.
Most meats, especially beef. Most vegetables.Mesquite Sweeter, moredelicate flavor than hickory. Tends to burn hot, so use carefully.
Salmon, swordfish, sturgeon, other fish. Also good with chicken and pork.Alder Delicate flavor that enhances lighter meats.
Poultry, vegetables, ham.MapleMildly smoky, somewhat sweet flavor.
Poultry, game birds, pork. Cherry Slightly sweet, fruity smoke flavor.
Beef, poultry, game birds, pork (particularly ham).AppleSlightly sweet but denser, fruity smoke flavor.

Always avoid soft, resinous woods like pine, cedar, and aspen.

  1. Remove the lid, cooking grid & cross bar before building the fire.

  2. Use the special fire pit insert (Part R) inside the charcoal pan.

ATTENTION: When the 4GRILL is used as a fire pit you have to place the special fire pit insert (Part R) in the charcoal pan (Part O). This insert has the function to limit the temperature radiation to the outer barrel segments of the 4GRILL and protecting the 4GRILL segment surface from getting permanently damaged!

Do not overfill the insert, causing a too big fire. The heat radiation can become too high causing the heat-resistant labels to deform and decolorize as well as to permanently damage the coated barrel segments.

  1. At no times place the lid on the fire pit insert or on any of the 4GRILL segments in this consideration, as this will damage the lid surface finish permanently.

EXTINGUISHING OF FIRE

When the preparation of the food has been finished successfully the lid can be placed back on top of the 4GRILL, with the air vent closed.

This procedure is only allowed in the Slow Cooking and/or Smoking Configuration, where the Charcoal pan is positioned in the bottom barrel segment (means in lowest possible position).

The charcoal or briquettes will extinguish by itself.

b. GRILLING and FIRE PIT CONFIGURATION

In the BBQ Configuration and/or Fire Pit Configuration it is at no times allowed to place the lid on top of the 4GRILL as this will damage the lid surface finish permanently.

The charcoal or briquettes will extinguish by itself.

c. GENERAL

If the fire needs to be shut down in a hurry, the best way is to cover the charcoal with sand.

Do not use water!

MAINTENANCE

a. AFTER EACH USE:

  • Make sure the appliance is cool and coals are totally extinguished before moving.
  • Remove the cooking grids, the drip/water pan and charcoal pan for cleaning.
  • Clean out the drip/water pan (Part N) by using a damp cloth.
  • Remove the cold ashes from the charcoal pan (Part O) and dispose the ashes.
  • Gently scrub residue of the cooking grids, cross bar and other racks with a brass wire grill brush or crumpled aluminium foil to avoid damaging the finish. Wipe off residue with paper towels.

b. ON REGULAR BASIS:

  • Remove the cooking grids, the drip/water pan (Part N) and charcoal pan for cleaning after the appliance is cool and coals are totally extinguished.
  • Use a mild detergent and water to clean away the grease which has built up on the cooking grids, in the drip/water pan (Part N) and charcoal pan (Part O) vusing a non-abrasive material. A more abrasive material will scratch the surface and make it more vulnerable to rust.
  • Rinse well with clear water.
  • Wipe completely dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Do not allow the grid, pans and racks to drain or air dry.
  • In general, for cleaning the inner/outer surfaces of your 4GRILL the use of a damp cloth is recommended only.

c. IF RUST OCCURS

- On exterior surface of the 4GRILL:

  • Clean and buff all rust spots gently with a grill brush
  • Touch-up affected areas with a good high-temperature resistant paint (applicable only for the 4GRILL black coated housing version).
  • Alternatively lightly coat affected areas with vegetable oil or vegetable cooking spray to minimize rusting (applicable for the 4GRILL black coated housing version as well as 4GRILL stainless steel version). Gently wipe dry with paper towels.

- On interior surface of the 4GRILL:

  • Clean and buff rust spots with a grill brush
  • Lightly coat affected areas with vegetable oil or vegetable cooking spray to minimize rusting. Gently wipe dry with paper towels. Never apply paint to the interior surface of the 4GRILL.
  • Do not apply oil to the water/drip pan (Part N) and charcoal pan.

d. GENERAL NOTES:

  • WARNING! Do not use sharp objects or abrasive cleaners. These will damage the finish.
  • Cover and store your 4GRILL in a dry place when not in use.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Due to its design and its place of installation (on the outer edge of the smoking lid), the thermometer (Part G) may only be used as a guide or for reference purpose. The cool air that is passing the outside of the thermometer cools down the thermometer under circumstances. So the thermometer might display a considerably lower temperature than the actual inside oven temperature.
  • Best smoking results can only be achieved through targeted experimentation. Observe the notes in chapter “regulating the fire”.
  • Drip/Water pan (Part N) is not allowed to be used for food preparation or cooking, e.g. soup etc. Only to be used to collect waste drippings (not to be consumed) or water for steaming.

- Wear, corrosion, deformation and discoloration of the parts that are directly exposed to the fire is quite normal and will therefore in no event ever be considered as a production flaw. It is the common result of their use.

- The user is responsible for the correct assembly of the appliance. Damages caused by improper assembly are not covered by the warranty.

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES

The 4GRILL may come with special heat-resistant decoration labels as optional accessories, if applicable.

For those heat-resistant labels Batavia GmbH has selected the best available products. The heat-resistant labels are tested to resist a temperature of max. 150° Celsius. Under normal use the 4GRILL segments will not exceed this temperature.

To avoid any damage or discoloration of those special heat-resistant decoration labels, it is recommended to keep a distance from at least 10cm to the top edge of each 4GRILL segment, when placing those onto the 4GRILL.
