How to clean the SS-5385 toaster?

Unplug the appliance and let it cool. Remove the crumb tray and empty it. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive detergents or chemicals. Never immerse the toaster in water.

How to use the defrost function?

Insert the frozen bread, set the browning level, then press the Defrost button. The indicator lights up and the toasting time is automatically extended to defrost and toast the bread.

What to do if the toaster smokes during first use?

This is normal. Run the toaster twice empty (without bread) at the highest browning level to burn off manufacturing residues. Ensure the room is ventilated.

The lever does not stay down, what to do?

Check that the appliance is plugged in and the socket works. If the lever does not latch, the toaster may be defective. Contact after-sales service.

Can I toast bread with butter or jam?

No, only toast dry bread. Greasy or sugary foods can cause a fire and damage the appliance.

How to stop toasting before the end?

Press the Cancel button at any time. The toaster turns off and the toast is ejected.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

General precautions during the use of electrical equipment

• Do not use the appliance for any other purpose than described in this manual.
• Do not use or store the appliance outdoors. • Always place the appliance on a flat and even surface.
• This product is intended for indoor, non-industrial, non-commercial and only for household use. Do not use the item outdoors or for any other purpose. Misuse or improper handling may cause problems in the appliance and cause injury to the user.
• The unit must be used only for the intended purposes. No liability is accepted for damages arising from improper use or wrong handling.
• Ensure that the voltage indicated on the nameplate matches the mains voltage before plugging in the appliance. • Always remove the plug from the power socket when the appliance is not in use. Do not leave the appliance unattended when switched on.
• Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is being used by or near children.
• Before cleaning or storing your appliance, always unplug it from the power supply and let it cool down.
• The device is not completely disconnected from the power source, even after it has been turned off. To disconnect it completely, unplug it from the mains.

Instructions to follow when using the appliance

• Do not touch the surface of the appliance; use the handle or mitts.
• Do not use sharp utensils to remove toast. When removing toast, be careful not to damage the heating wires.
• Do not touch any metal parts on the exterior of the device. These can become very hot during operation.
• Do not place bread slices that are too thick or wrapped in aluminium foil, to avoid risk of electric shock or fire.
• Do not cover the appliance with anything.
• Do not toast bread for too long as it may burn and cause a fire.
• Do not position the device beneath a curtain, wall cabinets or combustible materials.
• When this symbol is used, it means “Caution: Hot surfaces”. The toaster grill may reach a high temperature when the appliance is operating. The temperature of the metal panels on the main body can also get hot.

5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Before the first use

• Before using the appliance for the first time, clean the parts thoroughly (see Maintenance section).
• Set the toaster to the highest setting, and operate twice without any bread inside. Ventilate the room during this period.
• It is normal if some smoke or smell emanates from the appliance when using it for the first time.

Toasting

• Plug the unit into the power supply socket.
• Insert the slices of bread into the slot.
• Adjust the timer to the desired level: • 1 = minimum • 7 = maximum
• Press the sliding lever down until it locks. The pilot light will come on, indicating that the appliance is heating.
• When toasting is finished, the bread slices will be ejected, and the toaster will shut off automatically.

Reheating

• Use the Reheat function to warm up cold toasts without over browning. • After following the Toasting instructions, press the Reheat button to reduce heat intensity. The Reheat pilot light will come on.

Defrost

• Frozen bread requires more time to warm up. • After following the Toasting instructions, press the Defrost button to prolong toasting time. The Defrost pilot light will come on.

Cancel

- You can cancel toasting at any time, by pressing the Cancel button. The Cancel pilot light will come on.

Crumb Tray

• The crumb tray collects any crumbs that fall into the toaster. • Regularly empty out the crumb tray.
• Pull out to remove the crumb tray. Slide back in once finished.

• Make sure the appliance is unplugged and allow it to cool down before starting to clean it.
• Never use abrasive detergents, organic solvents or aggressive chemicals.
• Remove any bread crumbs stuck in the slot by gently turning the device upside down.
