Frequently Asked Questions - Power 12 Energy

Where should I place the Energy Power 12 subwoofer?

For optimal bass, place it in a corner of the room on the wall where the front speakers are located. You can also try other positions to adjust the sound.

How do I connect the subwoofer to my receiver?

Use the Line In (RCA) input if your receiver has a subwoofer output, or the Speaker In terminals with 16 gauge or larger speaker wire. Do not use both simultaneously.

What does the LED indicator on the back of the subwoofer mean?

The indicator lights up RED when the amplifier is in standby or Auto mode without signal. It turns GREEN when it receives a signal in Auto or On mode.

How do I adjust the low-pass filter (Low Pass)?

Turn the Low Pass knob between 50 and 150 Hz to select the upper cutoff frequency. Frequencies above are attenuated, which blends the subwoofer output with your main speakers.

How do I adjust the phase (Phase 0/180)?

The Phase control allows you to acoustically match the subwoofer with the main speakers. Try the 0 or 180 position and choose the one where the bass level is highest at your listening position.

What should I do if the subwoofer does not turn on?

Check that the power cord is securely plugged in and the outlet works. Make sure the rear switch is set to Auto or On. If the indicator remains off, contact a repair technician.

How do I clean the subwoofer?

Use a dry cloth to dust. For the grille, you can use a vacuum brush. Never use abrasive or solvent-based cleaners.

Can I repair the subwoofer myself?

No, the device contains dangerous voltages and no user-serviceable parts. Refer all servicing to a qualified professional repair technician.

What is the power rating of the Energy Power 12 subwoofer?

The subwoofer is powered with approximately 500 W from its built-in amplifier.

Is the subwoofer compatible with any receiver?

1. READ these instructions.

7. DO NOT block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
8. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
9. DO NOT defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wider blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
10. PROTECT the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
11. ONLY USE attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
12. USE only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/ apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.

POSITIONIng YOUR POWereD SUBWOOFer

Energy powered subwoofers are designed to reproduce the deep bass and deliver the impact that really makes your movies and music come alive. For optimum performance, place your subwoofer in a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers. Refer to Figure 1 for placement. Please note that room placement can have a dramatic effect upon the performance of your powered subwoofer. Corner placement, as suggested above, will increase the amount of bass output, while placing the subwoofer along the middle of a wall, or out in the room will decrease the amount of bass output but may result in tighter sounding bass. Experiment with a number of different placement options and control settings to find the one that best suits your particular room and taste. When choosing your subwoofer's location, keep in mind that you will need to connect the subwoofer's built-in amplifier to an AC power outlet.

COnneCTIng YOUR POWereD SUBWOOFer TO YOUR eLeCTrOnICS

Controls and Optional Connections — Powered subwoofers can be hooked up to the subwoofer output of your electronics via the RCA jack inputs on the subwoofer's rear panel. Refer to Figure 2. This is preferred over the conventional speaker wire connections. For more information on the controls mentioned in this manual and on bass management, see your dealer or visit energy-speakers.com.

"Line In" — This input is filtered by the built-in Low Pass (LP) crossover and is designed as a general purpose input for the subwoofer.

Conventional Speaker Wire Connection — Using 16-gauge or larger speaker wire, connect the RED "positive" (+) terminal of your amplifier's LEFT channel to the RED "positive" (+) terminal of your subwoofer's LEFT channel input ("Speaker In"). Connect the BLACK "negative" (−) terminal of your amplifier's LEFT channel to the BLACK "negative" (−) terminal of your subwoofer's LEFT channel input ("Speaker In"). Repeat this procedure for connecting your amplifier's RIGHT channel to your subwoofer's RIGHT channel input. Refer to Figure 2. Take care to make sure that no bare wires from any of the connections touch any other terminals as this could cause a short and damage your equipment.

"Low Pass (LP) Crossover" – The crossover allows the user to select the upper-frequency cutoff of the subwoofer. The frequency is selectable from 50-150Hz. Frequencies above the set level are filtered out, allowing you to blend the subwoofer's output into your main speakers.

"Volume" – This serves as the overall volume control for the subwoofer. It is used to match the output level of the sub to your main speakers.

"Phase 0/180" – This control is used to acoustically match the subwoofer's output to your main speakers. You want to select one of the two positions, either 0 or 180, in which your sub has more output at your listening position.

"Power Off/Auto/On" – "OFF/AUTO/ON" - Selecting "Auto" allows the sub to turn on the audio amplification when it senses an audio input signal. It will automatically turn off the audio amplification after 20 minutes if no signal input is detected. The sub has an LED on the top of the back panel that indicates the status of the auto function. The LED will light RED when the amplifier is in the "Off" position or in the "Auto" position with no audio signal, and GREEN when the amplifier is receiving a signal in the "Auto" position or when in the "On" position.

Care and CLeaning OF YOUR POWereD SUBWOOFer

The only thing you should ever need to do to your speakers is dust them occasionally. Never apply any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner or any harsh detergent. You can clean the grilles with the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.

Your Energy subwoofer is equipped with both Speaker (High) Level and Line In (Low) Level hookups. The connection you use depends on what type of receiver (or pre-amplifier) you are hooking the subwoofer to. Do not hook up both connections together as damage to your system may be a result! Most connections will use the Line In Connection.
