Frequently Asked Questions - GH Test JBL

How to use the JBL GH test?
Rinse the test tube with the water to be tested. Fill to 5 ml. Add the reagent drop by drop, shaking after each drop, until the color changes from red to green. Each drop corresponds to 1°d of total hardness.
What if the color does not change after several drops?
Make sure to use exactly 5 ml of water (lower meniscus line). If the color remains red, the hardness is very high. Continue adding drops until the change. If it turns green from the first drop, the hardness is very low (<1°d).
How to convert German degrees (°d) to ppm CaCO3?
Use the conversion table in the manual: 1°d = 17.8 ppm CaCO3. Multiply the number of °d by 17.8 to get ppm.
What are the safety precautions when using?
The reagent contains ammonia (5-10%), flammable and corrosive. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid inhalation and contact with skin/eyes. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with water and consult a doctor.
Where can I buy refills for the GH test?
JBL economical refills for the GH test are available in specialized aquarium stores or online. Ask your retailer for advice.
What is the shelf life of the reagent?
The shelf life is not specified, but keep the bottle tightly closed, away from light and heat. Use within 2 years of purchase for optimal reliability.
Can I use this test for seawater?
The JBL GH test is designed for freshwater. For seawater, use a specific saltwater test. Total hardness in seawater is usually measured differently.
What if the total hardness is too high or too low?
In aquariums, if too high: use a reverse osmosis system (e.g., JBL Osmose 120). If too low: add JBL AquaDur Plus. In garden ponds, if too low: use JBL StabiloPond Basis.
How to clean the test tube after use?
Rinse the test tube with clean water after each test. Avoid using soap or chemicals that could affect future results.
Is the test suitable for garden ponds?
Yes, the JBL GH test is also suitable for garden ponds. Total hardness is often low there due to dilution by rainwater. Adjust the values with specific products if necessary.

USER MANUAL GH Test JBL

The JBL TH test set is an easy to use quick-test for determining the total freshwater hardness.

Why test?

Depending on origin and consistency of the subsoil, water may contain varying quantities of alkaline earth salts, usually in the form of calcium and magnesium salts.

Total hardness, by definition, is the sum of calcium and magnesium ions suspended in the water. Most fish and plants thrive well at a total hardness of between roughly 8 and 20^ . Excessive total hardness values, should, however, be combated by taking appropriate measures.

In garden ponds, the total hardness readings are often low due to dilution from precipitation.

What to do in the event of

excessive total water hardness in an aquarium:

There are various methods for reducing water hardness (e.g. by using a reverse osmosis system such as JBL Osmose 120). Ask your pet shop specialist for details.

In case of too low total water hardness in the aquarium:

Use JBL AquaDur Plus.

In case the general water hardness is too low in your garden pond:

Use JBL StabiloPond Basis.

Instructions

  1. Repeatedly rinse the measuring vessel with the water to be tested.
  2. Fill the measuring vessel with the water to be tested up to the 5 ml mark

(CAUTION: the lower line of the water level must coincide with the marking).

  1. Add reagent one drop at a time, counting the drops, and shake after each drop until the colour changes from red to green.
  2. One drop of reagent solution used corresponds to 1^ total hardness (German scale).

For more precise readings:

Fill the measuring vessel up to the 10ml mark with the water to be tested.

One drop of reagent solution used up corresponds to 0.5^ total hardness (German scale).

Note: With 10ml sample water the colour development is less intensive for the first drops. For better readability place the measuring vessel on a white surface.

See table below for conversion into other commonly accepted units of measurement:
