Frequently Asked Questions - OD5008 IFM

How to adjust the color tolerance on the OD5008 sensor?
Use the rotary switch located on top of the sensor. Positions 1 to 5 correspond to increasing tolerance: 1 for detecting fine shades, 5 for color groups. The adjustment must be made before programming.
How to program a reference color?
Set the selector switch to the desired channel (Out1, Out2, Out3). Point the sensor at the reference object, then press the Teach button briefly. A red light spot appears then disappears. If the Out/OK LED turns on, programming is successful. If it flashes, the intensity is too high: tilt the sensor by 10 to 30° and repeat.
What to do if the function LED flashes after teaching?
Flashing indicates that the received light intensity is too high. To remedy this, tilt the sensor by 10 to 30° relative to the object, or move the sensor away from the object/reflector. If using a reflector, try a smaller model.
What is the maximum range of the OD5008 sensor?
The typical range in direct reflection mode is 12.5 mm. For transparent objects, use a suitable reflector. The range may vary depending on the color and reflectivity of the object.
How to electrically connect the sensor?
Turn off the system power. Connect the wires according to the wiring diagram: L+ (power supply), L- (ground), Out (output), AT (synchronization input), ET (programming input). Use a suitable M12x1 connector.
Can transparent objects be detected with this sensor?
Yes, by using an appropriate reflector. Mount the reflector opposite the sensor so that the light beam hits its center. This configuration improves detection of transparent surfaces.
What is the AT (synchronization) input used for?
The AT input allows deactivating the sensor via an external signal. Apply a voltage of 12 V to U Vmax to deactivate, or ≤2 V (or leave unconnected) to activate the sensor. Useful for synchronizing with other equipment.
How to change the tolerance after programming a color?
You must first reprogram the color after changing the tolerance. Turn the rotary switch to the new setting, then repeat the Teach operation for each affected output.
What is the function of the programming selector switch?
This switch allows selecting the color channel to program (Out1, Out2, Out3). For single-output sensors, use the Out1 position. In Run or Run Delay position, the sensor is in normal operation with or without a 20 ms delay.
How to mount the sensor for shiny objects?
To avoid reflections, tilt the sensor by 10 to 30° relative to the object's surface. This reduces the returned light intensity and improves detection reliability.

Functions and features

The colour sensor detects coloured objects and materials without contact in diffuse-reflection or retro-reflective mode.

Mounting

IFM OD5008 - Mounting - 1

natural_image Pure mechanical diagram showing a lever mechanism with arrows and circles, no text or symbols present

10...30°

Mount the colour sensor in such a way that the object to be detected makes as little lateral and vertical movement as possible. Consider the specified sensing range.

Transparent objects can be better detected by means of a suitable reflector. Mount the reflector opposite the colour sensor so that the light beam strikes the centre of the reflector.

In the case of moving objects the direction of movement should be transverse to the sensor to achieve optimum repeatability (this only applies to sensors with a sensing range of 12.5 mm).

In the case of shiny object surfaces the sensor should be mounted at an angle of inclination of 10 ... 30° referred to the object.

Electrical connection

IFM OD5008 - Electrical connection - 1

Disconnect power and connect the sensor as indicated on the type label.

The input AT (activation trigger = synchronising signal) can be used for triggering the sensor via an external voltage signal.

Sensor deactivated: 12 V < AT < U v_max

Sensor activated: AT ≤2 V or unused

Response time: < 0.2 ms

The input ET (External Teach) can be used for programming the reference colour for the output out1 via an external voltage signal.

Activate teach-in: 12 V < ET < U Vmax

RUN mode: ET ≤2 V or unused

Pulse duration: 0.5ms

Setting and programming

1IFM OD5008 - Setting and programming - 1Set the rotary switch colour tolerance (Tolerance) to the requested colour resolution.1 = small tolerance range for detecting small colour shades3 = basic setting5 = large tolerance range for detecting colour families or colour groups
2IFM OD5008 - Setting and programming - 2Set the programming selector switch to the colour channel to be adjusted (switching output Out1, Out2 or Out3).For units with only one switching output set the programming selector switch to Out1.
3IFM OD5008 - Setting and programming - 3Press the Teach button.A red light spot shows on the object.Release the Teach button, the light spot disappears.
4IFM OD5008 - Setting and programming - 4After a successful teach-in operation the function display (Out/OK) comes on. If it flashes, the intensity is too high. Incline the sensor by 10 ... 30° and repeat the teach-in operation. If the function display is not lit, the intensity is too low. Select a lighter mark.Only for retro-reflective modeIf the function display flashes, increase the distance sensor/object or sensor/reflector or use a smaller reflector. If the function display is not lit, reduce the distance sensor/object or sensor/reflector or use a larger reflector.
5IFM OD5008 - Setting and programming - 5Set the programming selector switch to Run or Run Delay (20 ms switch-off delay). For sensors with several switching outputs repeat the programming for the other switching outputs accordingly. The colour tolerance can be individually determined for each switching output. The sensor is ready for operation. If the switching output is activated, the function display is lit (Out/OK).If the tolerance setting is to be changed subsequently, programming must be made again with the tolerance setting changed.
