Caution for AC Mains Lead

(For United Kingdom)

("EB" area code model only)

For your safety, please read the following text carefully.

This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin mains plug for your safety and convenience.

A 5-ampere fuse is fitted in this plug.

Should the fuse need to be replaced please ensure that the replacement fuse has a rating of 5-ampere and that it is approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362.

Check for the ASTA mark or the BSI mark on the body of the fuse.

If the plug contains a removable fuse cover you must ensure that it is refitted when the fuse is replaced.

If you lose the fuse cover the plug must not be used until a replacement cover is obtained.

A replacement fuse cover can be purchased from your local dealer.

CAUTION!

IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UNSUITABLE FOR THE SOCKET OUTLET IN YOUR HOME THEN THE FUSE SHOULD BE REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF AND DISPOSED OF SAFELY. THERE IS A DANGER OF SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF THE CUT OFF PLUG IS INSERTED INTO ANY 13-AMPERE SOCKET.

If a new plug is to be fitted please observe the wiring code as stated below.

If in any doubt please consult a qualified electrician.

IMPORTANT

The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:

Blue: Neutral, Brown: Live.

As these colours may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:

The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured Black or Blue.

The wire which is coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured Brown or Red.

WARNING:DO NOT CONNECT EITHER WIRE TO THE EARTH TERMINAL WHICH IS MARKED WITH THE LETTER E, BY THE EARTH SYMBOL 12 OR COLOURED GREEN OR GREEN/ YELLOW.

How to replace the fuse

The location of the fuse differ according to the type of AC mains plug (figures A and B). Confirm the AC mains plug fitted and follow the instructions below.

Illustrations may differ from actual AC mains plug.

1. Open the fuse cover with a screwdriver.

• Use this unit to recharge the battery pack.
• Do not use the battery pack with equipment other than the specified player.
• Do not use the player outside if it is snowing or raining. (The battery pack is not waterproof.)
• Do not get dirt, sand, liquids, or other foreign matter on the terminals.
• Do not touch the plug terminals (+ and -) with metal objects.
• Do not disassemble, remodel, heat or throw into fire.
• Do not store the battery pack in temperature over 60^ .

2.Button-type battery (Lithium battery)

-Insert with poles aligned.
- Do not touch the terminals (+ and -) with metal objects.
- Do not disassemble, remodel, heat or throw into fire.
- Keep out of reach of children.

If any electrolyte should come into contact with your hands or clothes, wash it off thoroughly with water.

If any electrolyte should come into contact with your eyes, never rub the eyes.

Rinse eyes thoroughly with water, and then consult a doctor.

3.Disposing of the batteries

Check and follow your local regulations before disposal.

CAUTION!

DANGER OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS INCORRECTLY REPLACED.

REPLACE ONLY WITH THE SAME OR EQUIVALENT TYPE RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER. DISCARD USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.

AC adaptor

This AC adaptor operates on AC between 100 V and 240 V.

But

• Obtain a suitable plug adaptor if the plug does not fit the AC mains socket.

To prevent damage

Avoid the following;

• Spraying flammable insecticides near the unit.
• Pressing the LCD.
• Touching the lens and other parts of the laser pickup.

Do not use the unit in the following places;

• Where the temperature is below 5^ or above 35^ . (Operating the unit beyond this range can cause the protection circuitry to function and render the unit inoperable.)
• Sandy places such as beaches.
• On top of cushions, sofas, or hot equipment such as amplifiers.

Precautions for Listening with the Headphones or Earphones

• Do not play your headphones or earphones at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous extended play.
• If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
• Do not use while operating a motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas.
• You should use extreme caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
  Even if your headphones or earphones are the open-air type designed to let you hear outside sounds, don't turn up the volume so high that you can't hear what's around you.

Do not rest the unit on your lap for a long time while using it. The unit can become hot and cause burns.

Discs that can be played

This operating instruction manual uses the following icons such as RAM.

DVD RAM R AM RAM 4.7	DVD-RAM RAM Recorded using Version 1.1 of the Video Recording Format (a unified video recording standard).
DVD VIDEO DVD VIDEO	DVD-Video DVD-V Some DVD-Audio discs contain DVD-Video content. To play DVD-Video content, select "DVD-Video Mode" (→ page 20).
DVD R R4.7	DVD-R DVD-V Panasonic DVD-R recorded and finalized* on Panasonic DVD- Video recorders or DVD-Video cameras are played as DVD- Video.
DVD AUDIO	DVD-Audio DVD-A Output is only 2 channels on this unit.
COMPACT DISC COMPACT DIGITAL VIDEO	Video CD VCD Includes SVCD (Conforms to IEC62107).
COMPACT DISC COMPACT DIGITAL AUDIO	CD CD WMA MP3 JPEG VCD This unit can play finalized* or session closed audio recording CD-R/RW. ● This unit also plays HighMAT discs (WMA, MP3, or JPEG files only).

*A process that allows play on compatible equipment.

To clean discs

Wipe with a damp cloth and then wipe dry.

RAM DVD-R

Clean with an optional DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner (LF-K200DCA1, where available).

• Never use cloths or cleaners for CDs etc.

Disc handling precautions

• Do not attach labels or stickers to discs (This may cause disc warping, rendering it unusable).
• Do not write on the label side with a ball-point pen or other writing instrument.
• Do not use record cleaning sprays, benzine, thinner, static electricity prevention liquids or any other solvent.
• Do not use scratch-proof protectors or covers.
• Do not use the following discs:
• Discs with exposed adhesive from removed stickers or labels (rented discs etc).
• Discs that are badly warped or cracked.
• Irregularly shaped discs, such as heart shapes.

Accessories

Use numbers indicated in parentheses when asking for replacement parts. The included AC mains lead and AC adaptor are for use with this unit only. Do not use them with other equipment.

READ THE CAUTION FOR THE AC MAINS LEAD ON PAGE 2 BEFORE CONNECTION.

Charging the battery (When the unit is off)

Remove the insulator sheet

Make sure the built-in battery is attached whenever you use the unit.

• Use together with the optional battery pack for longer play ( page 23).
• You can also use the optional car adaptor ( page 22).
• You can also use this unit without charging while connecting the AC adaptor and the AC mains lead.

To conserve power

This unit consumes 0.6W of power even when turned off.

When the unit is not going to be used for a long time, disconnect the AC mains lead from the household mains socket.

When finished, disconnect the AC adaptor and the AC mains lead.

The unit is in the standby condition (the [D] indicator lights) when the AC mains lead is connected. The primary circuit is always "live" as long as the AC adaptor is connected to an electrical outlet.

Checking the remaining battery charge

When the unit is on ( page 8) and powered by the battery pack.

Press [DISPLAY] to check on the LCD (Displays for a few seconds).

GUI screen ( page 15) is also displayed at the same time. Press [RETURN] to cancel.

Adjusting the LCD angle

Play

If the disc contains both audio data (WMA/MP3) and JPEG, select either setting from "Mixed Disc-Audio & Stills" ( page 20).

• While stopped, the unit automatically turns off once 15 minutes (after approximately 5 minutes when using the battery pack) have elapsed.
• Discs continue to rotate while menus are displayed. Press [■] when you finish to preserve the unit's motor.

Main unit operations

ON	Turn unit on/ play	Press and hold and the power comes on and play begins.
-OFF	Stop	While “>” is flashing, press [▶, ON] and play begins from the position where play stopped. • DVD While the message is displayed, press [▶, ON] and the previous chapters are reviewed. Opening the lid, or pressing [■, -OFF] while “>” is flashing cancels the memorized position where play stopped.
	Turn unit off	Press and hold until “OFF” is displayed.
	Pause	Press [▶, ON] to return to normal play.
	Skip	Skipping items.
SEARCH ENTER →	Search	Turn the shuttle dial. Release the shuttle dial to return to normal play.
	Slow play	Turn the shuttle dial while paused. Press [▶, ON] to return to normal play. VCD [▶] only.
	Menu operation	Use [▲▼▲] to select an item and press [ENTER] to confirm.
	Frame by Frame	While paused, use [▲▼]. VCD [▶] only.
	Group skip	JPEG Use [▲▼].

Advanced surround RAM DVD-V VCD (Discs with more than 2ch audio)

A surround sound effect can be made using 2 speakers (on other equipment).
- For discs recorded with surround sound signals, the surround signals also appear to be heard from the side.
- Turn the surround feature on the connected equipment off.
- Optimum seating position is 3 to 4 times the distance between the front left and right speakers or the width of the television if using the television speakers.

Press to select "SP 1" (normal) or "SP 2" (emphasized).

When using headphones, press [<] and use [▲▼] to select "HP".

RAM VCD You can select either "L", "R", or "LR".
DVD- On karaoke discs you can turn the vocals on/off. Read the inside of the disc's jacket for further details.

Use [▶] to select "ON/OFF" (DVD-V VCD), and change using [▲▼].

RAM (Only discs that contain subtitle on/off information)

Subtitle on/off information cannot be recorded using Panasonic DVD Recorders. (Subtitle on/off information is also not recordable on Panasonic DVD-R finalized with a Panasonic DVD Recorder.)

Adjusting the position/brightness DVD-V

Using [▲▶] to select "Subtitle Position/Subtitle Brightness" and adjust with [▲▼].

• "Auto" automatically adjusts the brightness.

Selecting how to show 4:3 aspect pictures on the LCD

• If you are not using the LCD on this unit, select "OFF" to conserve power. (The [O] indicator flashes.)
  The LCD turns off automatically if you close it.

Adjusting the picture quality on the LCD

Use [ ] to select the item, and [ ] to change the setting.

To add/change a program

Use [ ] to select the item to change and perform step 1.

To cancel a program

Use [ ] to select the item to cancel and press [CANCEL].

• Using [▲▼▲▶] to select "Clear" and pressing [ENTER] also clears the item.

To cancel all programs

Use [ ] to select "Clear all" and press [ENTER].

• All programs are also cleared when you open the disc lid, or switch the unit off.

Random play

Press to select a group 2 (DVD-A) or title (DVD-V).

• You can select multiple groups.
• To enter all groups, select "All" using [▲▶] and press [ENTER].
• To deselect a group, press the numbered buttons corresponding to the group you want to clear.

Takes you to the next menu which shows play lists or another menu.

• To return to the menu, press [TOP MENU].
• To change to the menu background recorded on disc, press [DISPLAY] while the menu is displayed.

Selecting from the list menu to play

1. During play, press [MENU].
2. Use [] then [ ] to change the list.
3. Use [▶] then [▲▼] to select an item and press [ENTER].
4. To cancel the menu, press [MENU].

• If the disc contains both audio data (WMA/MP3) and JPEG, select either setting from "Mixed Disc-Audio & Stills" ( page 20).
  Refer to page 24 regarding play limitations on this unit and creation of files on a computer.

Use [▲▼▲▶] to select the track or picture and press [ENTER].

" indicates the track currently being played.

• Use [▲▼ ▲▶] to display the next or previous pages by selecting "Prev" or "Next" and pressing [ENTER].

• Press [TOP MENU] to exit the menu.

Viewing track information CD (CD text only)

Use [▲▼] to select a track and use [▶].

• To check other track information, use [ ] .
• To play, press [ENTER].
  To return to the menu, press [RETURN].

Selecting a group using the tree menu WMA MP3 JPEG

JPEG Use [▲▼▲▶] to select the "Tree" and press [ENTER].

The selected group menu is displayed.

Searching the title to play WMA MP3 CD (CD text only)

You can search using alphanumeric character input. (No difference between upper and lower case)

Use [ ] to select "Find" and press [ENTER].

2 Use [▲▼] to select the character and press [ENTER].

• Use [▶▶] to skip between A, E, I, O, U.
• Use [ ] to re-select a character.
  To continue character input, repeat step 2.
• Erase the asterisk (*) to search for the titles starting with that character.

3 Use [▶] to select "Find" and press [ENTER].

The result of the search appears on screen.

4 Use [▲▼] to select the track and press [ENTER].

To return to the previous menu, press [RETURN].

Unit limitations

• Discs must conform to ISO9660 level 1 or 2 (except for extended formats).
• This unit is compatible with multi-session but if there are a lot of sessions it takes more time for play to start. Keep the number of sessions to a minimum to avoid this.
• Groups below the 8th tree level are displayed on the same level as the 8th level.
• The menu display on this unit and on a computer may be different.
• Depending on how a disc was created, the play order may change.
• Files created using packet write cannot be played.

WMA

• You cannot play WMA files that are copy protected.

MP3

• This unit is not compatible with ID3 tags.

JPEG

• To view JPEG files on this unit:

• Take them on a digital camera that meets the DCF Standard (Design rule for Camera File system) Version 1.0. Some digital cameras have functions that are not supported by the DCF Standard Version 1.0 like automatic picture rotation which may render a picture un-viewable.

-Do not alter the files in any way or save them under a different name.

Troubleshooting guide

Before requesting service, make the following checks. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, consult your dealer for instructions.

The following do not indicate malfunction.

Sound from the AC adaptor during recharging.
The battery pack warming up when recharging or during use.
- The surface and area around the unit becoming warm when used over long periods.

Power

No power.

Unit turns off automatically.

Unit doesn't work when powered by battery pack.

Cannot charge or the [CHG] indicator fails to light.

Play time dramatically reduces after recharging.

• Check connections to the AC adaptor or battery pack. (6), (23)
• You cannot turn on the unit with the remote control if the unit is powered by the battery pack.
• The unit turns off after it has been stopped for about 15 minutes (5 minutes when the unit is powered by the battery pack) to conserve power. Turn the unit on again.
• The unit and battery pack have protection circuitry that activate if they become too hot or too cold. They will not work if this occurs. Use the unit and battery pack between 5^ and 35^ .
• The battery pack can only be recharged when the unit is off.
• The charging time increases when the temperature is too hot or too cold, and charging may not be possible under some circumstances.

• The battery pack has reached the end of its service life (It can be recharged about 300 times).

• Even if a second soundtrack isn't recorded, two numbers will normally be shown.
  This is normal on DVD-Audio.
• The end of an item becomes point B when it is reached.

• Some discs prohibit certain operations.
• If there is no response at all, the unit may have been affected by lightning or static electricity. Turn the unit off and on again. Alternatively, turn the unit off, disconnect the power source (AC or battery pack), reconnect the power and turn the unit on again.
• Condensation has formed: Wait 1 to 2 hours for it to evaporate.
• This unit cannot play discs other than those specified. (5)
  Clean the disc. (5)
• Ensure the disc is inserted correctly. (8)
• Check that the disc has something recorded on it.
• Check that the battery is installed correctly. (7)
• The battery is depleted: Replace it with new ones. (7)
• Point the remote control at the remote control sensor and operate. (7)
• You cannot add markers while playing a playlist or discs that do not show the elapsed time.
• The unit reads and displays the markers added with a DVD video recorder. You can clear them but reappear when you switch the unit to standby or open the lid.
• When you add and delete markers, the order of previously set markers changes because all markers are ordered by time.

• Trouble has occurred. The number appearing after "H" depends on the problem. Turn the unit off and on again. Alternatively, turn the unit off, disconnect the power source (AC or battery pack) reconnect the power and turn the unit on again.

If the service numbers fail to clear, note the service number and consult your dealer.

• Press [■, -OFF], then retry the operation again.
