INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIRING APPLIANCES CONTAINING R290 / R32 1 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS This instruction manual is intended for use by individuals possessing adequate backgrounds of electrical, elec- tronic, refrigerant and mechanical experience.
1.1 Checks to the area
Prior to beginning work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks are necessary to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimised. For repair to the refrigerating system, the following precautions shall be complied with prior to conducting work on the system.
Work shall be undertaken under a controlled procedure so as to minimise the risk of a flammable gas or vapour being present while the work is being performed.
1.3 General work area
All maintenance staff and others working in the local area shall be instructed on the nature of work being carried out. Work in confined spaces shall be avoided. The area around the workspace shall be sectioned off. Ensure that the conditions within the area have been made safe by control of flammable material.
1.4 Checking for presence of refrigerant
The area shall be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector prior to and during work, to ensure the technician is aware of potentially flammable atmospheres. Ensure that the leak detection equipment being used is suitable for use with flammable refrigerants, i.e. nonsparking, adequately sealed or intrinsically safe.
1.5 Presence of fire extinguisher
lf any hotwork is to be conducted on the refrigeration equipment or any associated parts, appropriate fire extinguishing equipment shall be available to hand. Have a dry powder or CO
fire extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.
1.6 No ignition sources
No person carrying out work in relation to a refrigeration system which involves exposing any pipe work that contains or has contained flammable refrigerant shall use any sources of ignition in such a manner that it may lead to the risk of fire or explosion. All possible ignition sources, including cigarette smoking, should be kept sufficiently far away from the site of installation, repairing, removing and disposal, during which flammable refrigerant can possibly be released to thesurrounding space. Prior to worktaking place, the area around the equipment is to be surveyed to make sure that there are no flammable hazards or ignition risks. “No Smoking” signs shall be displayed.
Ensure that the area is in the open or that it is adequately ventilated before breaking into the system or conducting any hot work. A degree of ventilation shall continue during the period that the work is carried out. The ventilation should safely disperse any released refrigerant and preferably expel it extemally into the atmosphere.
1.8 Checks to the refrigeration equipment
Where electrical components are being changed, they shall be fit for the purpose and to the correct specifica- tion. At all times the manufacturer’s maintenance and service guidelines shall be followed. lf in doubt consult the manufacturer’s technical department for assistance. The following checks shall be applied to installations using flammable refrigerants: - the charge size is in accordance with the room size within which the refrigerant containing parts are installed;
- the ventilation machinery and outlets are operating adequately and are not obstructed;
- if an indirect refrigerating circuit is being used, the secondary circuit shall be checked for the presence of refrigerant;
- marking to the equipment continues to be visible and legible. Markings and signs that are illegible shall be corrected;
- refrigeration pipe or components are installed in a position where they are unlikely to be exposed to any substance which may corrode refrigerant containing components, unless the components are constructed of materials which are inherently resistant to being corroded or are suitably protected against being so cor- roded.
1. 9 Checks to electrical devices
Repair and maintenance to electrical components shall include initial safety checks and component inspection procedures. lf a fault exists that could compromise safety, then no electrical supply shall be connected to the
circuit until it is satisfactorily dealt with. lf the fault cannot be corrected immediately but it is necessary to continue operation, an adequate temporary solution shall be used. This shall be reported to the owner of the equipment so all parties are advised. lnitial safety checks shall include:
- that capacitors are discharged: this shall be done in a safe manner to avoid possibility of sparking;
that there no live electrical components and wiring are exposed while charging, recovering or purging the system;
- that there is continuity of earth bonding.
2 REPAIRS TO SEALED COMPONENTS
2.1 During repairs to sealed components, all electrical supplies shall be disconnected from the equipment being
worked upon prior to any removal of sealed covers, etc. lf it is absolutely necessary to have an electrical supply to equipment during servicing, then a permanently operating form of leak detection shall be located at the most critical point to warn of a potentially hazardous situation.
2.2 Particular attention shall be paid to the following to ensure that by working on electrical components, the
casing is not altered in such a way that the level of protection is affected. This shall include damage to cables, excessive number of connections, terminals not made to original specification, damage to seals, incorrect fit- ting of glands, etc. Ensure that apparatus is mounted securely. Ensure that seals or sealing materials have not degraded such that they no longer serve the purpose of preven- ting the ingress of flammable atmospheres. Replacement parts shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. NOTE The use of silicon sealant may inhibit the effectiveness of some types of leak detection equipment. lntrin- sically safe components do not have to be isolated prior to working on them.
3 REPAIR TO INTRINSICALLY SAFE COMPONENTS
Do not apply any permanent inductive or capacitance loads to the circuit without ensuring that this will not exceed the permissible voltage and current permitted tor the equipment in use. lntrinsically safe components are the only types that can be worked on while live in the presence of a flam- mable atmosphere. The test apparatus shall be at the correct rating. Replace components only with parts specified by the manufacturer. Other parts may result in the ignition of refrigerant in the atmosphere from a leak. 4 CABLING Check that cabling will not be subject to wear, corrosion, excessive pressure, vibration, sharp edges or any other adverse environmental effects. The check shall also take into account the effects of aging or continua! vibration from sources such as compressors or fans.
5 DETECTION OF FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANTS
Under no circumstances shall potential sources of ignition be used in the searching for or detection of refrige- rant leaks. A halide torch (or any other detector using a naked flame} shall not be used.
6 LEAK DETECTION METHODS
The following leak detection methods are deemed acceptable for systems containing flammable refrigerants. Electronic leak detectors shall be used to detect flammable refrigerants, but the sensitivity may not be ade- quate, or may need recalibration. (Detection equipment shall be calibrated in a refrigerant-free area.) Ensure that the detector is not a potential source of ignition and is suitable for the refrigerant used. Leak detection equipment shall be set at a percentage of the LFL of the refrigerant and shall be calibrated to the refrigerant employed and the appropriate percentage of gas (25 % maximum} is confirmed. Leak detection fluids are suitable for use with most refrigerants but the use of detergents containing chlorine shall be avoided as the chlorine may react with the refrigerant and corrode the copper pipework. lf a leak is suspected, all open flames shall be removed/extinguished. lf a leakage of refrigerant is found which requires brazing, all of the refrigerant shall be recovered from the system, or isolated (by means of shut off valves} in a part of the system remote from the leak. Oxygen free nitrogen (OFN) shall then be purged through the system both before and during the brazing process.
7 REMOVAL AND EVACUATION
When breaking into the refrigerant circuit to make repairs - or for any other purpose - conventional procedures shall be used. However, it is important that best practice is followed since flammability is a consideration. The following procedure shall be adhered to: remove refrigerant; purge the circuit with inert gas; evacuate; purge again with inert gas; open the circuit by cutting or brazing. The refrigerant charge shall be recovered into the correct recovery cylinders. The system shall be “flushed” with OFN to render the unit safe. This process may need to be repeated several times. Compressed air or oxygen shall not be used for this task. Flushing shall be achieved by breaking the vacuum in the system with OFN and continuing to fill until the working pressure is achieved, then venting to atmosphere, and finally pulling down to a vacuum. This process shall be repeated until no refrigerant is within the system. When the final OFN charge is used, the system shall be vented down to atmospheric pressure to enable work to take place. This operation is absolutely vital if brazing operations on the pipework are to take place. Ensure that the outlet tor the vacuum pump is not close to any ignition sources and !here is ventilation available.88 8 CHARGING PROCEDURES In addition to conventional charging procedures, the following requirements shall be followed. Ensure that contamination of different refrigerants does not occur when using charging equipment. Hoses or lines shall be as short as possible to minimise the amount of refrigerant contained in them. Cylinders shall be kept upright. Ensure that the refrigeration system is earthed prior to charging the system with refrigerant. Label the system when charging is complete (if not already). Extreme care shall be taken not to overfill the refrigeration system. Prior to recharging the system it shall be pressure tested with OFN. The system shall be leak tested on completion of charging but prior to commissioning. A follow up leak test shall be carried out prior to leaving the site. 9 DECOMMISSIONING Before carrying out this procedure, it is essential that the technician is completely familiar with the equipment and all its detail. lt is recommended good practice that all refrigerants are reco- vered safely. Prior to the task being carried out, an oil and refrigerant sample shall be taken in case analysis is required prior to re-use of reclaimed refrigerant. lt is essential that 4 GB electrical power is available before the task is commenced. a) Become familiar with the equipment and its operation. b) lsolate system electrically. c) Before attempting the procedure ensure that: mechanical handling equipment is available, if required, for handling refrigerant cylinders; d) All personal protective equipment is available and being used correctly; the recovery process is supervised at all times by a competent person; e) recovery equipment and cylinders conform to the appropriate standards. f) Pump down refrigerant system, if possible.
lf a vacuum is not possible, make a manifold so that refrigerant can be removed from various parts of the system. h) Make sure that cylinder is situated on the scales before recovery takes place.
i) Start the recovery machine and operate in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
j) Do not overfill cylinders. (No more than 80 % volume liquid charge). k) Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of the cylinder, even temporarily. l) When the cylinders have been filled correctly and the process completed, make sure that the cylinders and the equipment are removed from site promptly and all isolation valves on the equipment are closed off. m) Recovered refrigerant shall not be charged into another refrigeration system unless it has been cleaned and checked. 10 LABELLING Equipment shall be labelled stating that it has been de-commissioned and emptied of refrigerant. The label shall be dated and signed. Ensure that there are labels on the equipment stating the equipment contains flammable refrigerant. 11 RECOVERY When removing refrigerant from a system, either for servicing or decommissioning, il is recommended good practice that all refrigerants are removed safely. When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure that only appropriate refrigerant recovery cylinders are employed. Ensure that the correct number of cylinders for holding the total system charge are avai
lable. All cylinders to be used are designated for the recovered refrigerant and labelled for that refrigerant (i.e. special cylinders for the recovery of refrigerant). Cylinders shall be complete with pressure relief valve and associated shut-off valves in good working order. Empty recovery cylinders are evacuated and, if possible, cooled before recovery occurs. The recovery equipment shall be in good working order with a set of instructions concerning the equipment that is at hand and shall be suitable for the recovery of flammable refrigerants. In addition, a set of calibrated weighing scales shall be available and in good working order. Hoses shall be complete with leak-free discon- nect couplings and in good condition. Before using the recovery machine, check that il is in satisfactory wor- king order, has been properly maintained and that any associated electrical components are sealed to prevent ignition in the event of a refrigerant release. Consult manufacturer if in doubt. The recovered refrigerant shall be returned to the refrigerant supplier in the correct recovery cylinder, and the relevant Waste Transfer Note arranged. Do not mix refrigerants in recovery units and especially not in cylinders. lf compressors or compressor oils are to be removed, ensure that they have been evacuated to an acceptable level to make certain that flammable refrigerant does not remain within the lubricant. The evacuation process shall be carried out prior to returning the compressor to the suppliers. Only electric healing to the compressor body shall be employed to accelerate this process. When oil is drained from a system, il shall be carried out safely. Note about Fluorinated Gasses

C OPERATING TEMPERATURE
Cooling, heating and / or dehumidifying are effective at the following indoor and outdoor temperatures:
- If air conditioner is used outside of the above conditions, certain safety protection features may come into operation and cause the unit to function abnormally.
- If the air conditioner operates in excess of a relative humidity of 80% in the room, the surface of the air conditioner may attract condensation. Please set the vertical air flow louver to its maximum angle (vertically to the floor), and set HIGH fan mode.
- For maximum effect of your air conditioner always close doors and windows when cooling or heating.
- Always aim the remote controller towards the receiver on the indoor unit and make sure there are no obstacles in between the remote control and the receiver on the indoor unit. Otherwise the remote control signal will not be picked up by the receiver and the air conditioner will not work properly.
- The maximum distance at which the remote control will work is approximately 6 to 7 meters.
NOTE! Keep the remote controller where its signal can reach the receiver of the unit. When you select the timer operation, the remote controller automatically transmits a signal to the indoor unit at the specified time. If you keep the remote controller in a position that hinders proper signal transmissions, a time lag of up to 15 minutes may occur.

To achieve optimal performance, please note the following:
- Adjust the air flow direction correctly so that it is not directly directed to people.
- Adjust the temperature to achieve the highest comfort level. Do not adjust the unit to excessive tem- perature levels.
- Close doors and windows otherwise the desired effect may be reduced.
- Do not put any object near air inlet or air outlet, as the efficiency of the air conditioner may be reduced and the air conditioner may stop running. Make sure there are no obstacles blocking the air flow. The air stream must be allowed to reach the entire room unhindered. Also the air stream must be allowed to reach the air conditioner unhindered.
- Clean the air filter periodically, otherwise cooling or heating performance may be reduced. It is advised to clean the filters every two weeks.
- Do not operate unit with horizontal louvre in closed position.
G ADJUSTING AIR FLOW DIRECTION
- Adjust the vertical louver manually. Adjusting the horizontal Air Flow Direction (up - down) The air conditioner automatically adjusts the horizontal air flow direction in accord- ance with the operating mode. To set the horizontal air flow direction Perform this function while the unit is in operation. Keep pressing the AIR DIRECTION button on the remote controller to move the louver to the desired direction.
- Adjust the horizontal air flow direction to the desired direction.
In subsequent operations, the horizontal air flow is automatically set in the direc- tion to which you adjusted the louver by pressing the AIR DIRECTION button. To set the vertical air flow direction (left - right) Adjust the vertical louver manually using the lever in the middle of the vertical louver arm (depending on model). When the air conditioner is in operation and the vertical louver is in a specific position, move the lever at left (or right, depending on model) end of the air outlet to the desired position.
CAUTION! Take care, do not touch the fan behind the vertical louvers! To automatically swing the air flow direction (up - down) Perform this function while the air conditioner is in operation.

SLEEP/ECONOMIC OPERATION
- When you push SLEEP button during COOLING, HEATING or AUTO oper- ation, the air conditioner will automatically increase (cooling) or decrease (heating) 1ºC per hour. The set temperature will be steady 2 hours later and remains steady for 5 hours. After 5 hours the unit will stop. The fan speed will be automatically controlled. DEHUMIDIFYING OPERATION
- The dehumidifying mode will automatically select the dehumidifying operation based on the difference between the set temperature and the actual room temperature.
- The temperature is regulated while dehumidifying by repeatingly turning on and off of the cooling operation or fan only. The fan speed is controlled automatically.
- In normal cooling operation the air conditioner will also dehumidify the air.
NOTE When the air conditioner is dehumidifying it is likely that the room temperature will decrease. It is therefore normal that a hygrostat will measure a higher relative humidity. The absolute humidity in the room will however be lowered, depending on the amount of moisture produced in the room (cooking, people etc).
- It is necessary to stop the air conditioner and disconnect the power supply before cleaning. Cleaning the indoor unit and remote controller
- Use a dry cloth to wipe the indoor unit and remote controller.
- A cloth dampened with cold water may be used on the indoor unit if it is very dirty.
- The front panel of the indoor unit can be removed and cleaned with water. Then wipe it with a dry cloth.
- Do not use a chemically treated cloth or duster to clean the unit.
- Do not use benzine, thinner, polishing powder, or similar solvents for cleaning. These may cause the plastic surface to crack or deform. Cleaning the filter A clogged air filter reduces the cooling efficiency of this unit. Clean the filter once every 2 weeks.
1. The air filter is under the top air inlet grill.
2. Grip the tab on the end of the filter, lift it up, then pull it towards yourself.
3. Remove the screen filter from the indoor unit.
- Clean the screen filter once every two weeks.
- Clean screen filter with a vacuum cleaner or water.
4. The black active carbon filter cannot be cleaned. This filter will simply not filter
unpleasant odours anymore once dirty. At that moment this filter needs to be replaced by a new filter. (available at your dealer). It is advised to exchange this filter twice every season.
5. The green coloured 3M HAF filter will show clear signs of dirt on and in the filter
once dirty. When dirty this filter cannot be cleaned and needs to be replaced by a new filter (available at your dealer). It is advised to exchange this filter twice every season. New filter Recommended change of filter
6. After replacing the active carbon filter and the 3M HAF filter in the filter holder on
the screen filter, the screen filter can be replaced into the air conditioner.

right edges line up correctly and place filter into position. House- hold DrainCleaner Thinner Filter TabsRemove air freshening filter from back of larger filter (some units)99
Maintenance If you plan to idle the unit for a long time, perform the following:
1. Operate the fan for about 6 hours to dry the inside of the unit.
2. Stop the air conditioner and disconnect power. If a 4.8kW model is used, interrupt the power supply.
Remove the batteries from the remote controller.
3. The outdoor unit requires periodic maintenance and cleaning. This should only be done by an author-
ized airconditioning engineer. Checks before operation
- Check that the wiring is not broken or disconnected.
- Check that the air filter is installed.
- Check if the air outlet or inlet is not blocked after the air conditioner has not been used for a long time. CAUTION
- Do not touch the metal parts of the unit when removing the filter. Injuries can occur when handling sharp metal edges.
- Do not use water to clean inside the air conditioner. Exposure to water can destroy the insulation, leading to possible electric shock.
- When cleaning the unit, first make sure that the power and circuit breaker are turned off.
The following events may occur during normal operation.
1. Protection of the air conditioner.
Compressor protection
- The compressor cannot restart for 3 minutes after it stops. Anti-cold air
- The unit is designed not to blow cold air on HEAT mode, when the indoor heat exchanger is in one of the following three situations and the set temperature has not been reached. A. When heating has just started. B. Defrosting. C. Low temperature heating. Defrosting
- The indoor or outdoor fan stops running when defrosting.
- Frost may be generated on the outdoor unit during heat cycle when outdoor temperature is low and humidity is high resulting in lower heating efficiency of the air conditioner.
- During this condition air conditioner will stop heating operation periodically and start defrosting automatically.
- The time to defrost may vary from 4 to 10 minutes according to the outdoor temperature and the amount of frost buildup on the outdoor unit.
2. A white mist coming out from the indoor unit.
- A white mist may generate due to a large temperature difference between air inlet and air outlet on COOL mode in an indoor environment that has a high relative humidity.
- A white mist may generate due to moisture generated from defrosting process when the air condi- tioner restarts in HEAT mode operation after defrosting.100
3. Low noise of the air conditioner.
- You may hear a low hissing sound when the compressor is running or has just stopped running. This sound is the sound of the refrigerant flowing or coming to a stop.
- You can also hear a low “squeak” sound when the compressor is running or has just stopped run- ning. This is caused by heat expansion and cold contraction of the plastic parts in the unit when the temperature is changing.
- A sound may be heard due to louver restoring to its original position when power is first turned on.
4. Dust is blown out from the indoor unit.
- This is a normal condition when the air conditioner has not been used for a long time or during first use of the unit.
5. A peculiar smell comes out from the indoor unit.
- This is caused by the indoor unit giving off smells permeated from building material, from furniture, or smoke.
6. The air conditioner turns to FAN only mode from COOL or HEAT mode.
- When indoor temperature reaches the temperature setting on air conditioner, the compressor will stop automatically, and the air conditioner turns to FAN only mode. The compressor will start again when the indoor temperature rises on COOL mode or falls on HEAT mode to the set point.
7. Dripping water may generate on the surface of the indoor unit when cooling in a high relatively
humidity (relative humidity higher than 80%). Adjust the horizontal louver to the maximum air outlet position and select HIGH fan speed.
- The air conditioner draws in heat from the outdoor unit and releases it via the indoor unit during heating operation. When the outdoor temperature falls, heat drawn in by the air conditioner decreas- es accordingly and the heating capacity will decrease. At the same time, heat loading of the air condi- tioner increases due to larger difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. If a comfortable temperature cannot be achieved by the air conditioner, it is advised to use a supplementary heating device.
9. Auto-restart function.
- Power failure during operation will stop the unit completely. The air conditioner is equipped with Auto-restart feature, when the power restores, the unit restarts automatically with all the previous settings preserved by the memory function.
10. Refrigerant leak detection.
- The air conditioner is provided with a Refrigerant leak detection system. When the outdoor unit detects a shortage of refrigerant, the air conditioner will stop and the indoor unit shows the alarm EC on the display. When this alarm occurs, do not restart the air conditioner and contact your supplier.101
K TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS
Malfunctions and Solutions
TROUBLE Stop the air conditioner immediately if one of the following faults occur. Disconnect the power and contact your supplier.
- Fuse blows frequently or circuit breaker trips frequently.
- Other objects or water penetrate the air conditioner.
- The remote controller won’t work or works abnormally.
- Other abnormal situations. Issue Possible CausesUnit does not turn on when pressing ON/OFF buttonThe Unit has a 3-minute protection feature that prevents the unit from over-loading. The unit cannot be restarted within three minutes of being turned off. The unit changes from COOL/HEAT mode to FAN modeThe unit may change its setting to prevent frost from forming on the unit. Once the temperature increases, the unit will start operating in the previ-ously selected mode again. The set temperature has been reached, at which point the unit turns off the compressor. The unit will continue operating when the temperature fluctu-ates again. The indoor unit emits white mistIn humid regions, a large temperature difference between the room’s air and the conditioned air can cause white mist. Both the indoor and outdoor units emit white mistWhen the unit restarts in HEAT mode after defrosting, white mist may be emitted due to moisture generated from the defrosting process. The indoor unit makes noisesA rushing air sound may occur when the louver resets its position.A squeaking sound may occur after running the unit in HEAT mode due to expansion and contraction of the unit’s plastic parts. Both the indoor unit and out-door unit make noisesLow hissing sound during operation: This is normal and is caused by refrige-rant gas flowing through both indoor and outdoor units.Low hissing sound when the system starts, has just stopped running, or is defrosting: This noise is normal and is caused by the refrigerant gas stopping or changing direction.Squeaking sound: Normal expansion and contraction of plastic and metal parts caused by temperature changes during operation can cause squeaking noises. The outdoor unit makes noises The unit will make different sounds based on its current operating mode.Dust is emitted from either the indoor or outdoor unitThe unit may accumulate dust during extended periods of non-use, which will be emitted when the unit is turned on. This can be mitigated by cove-ring the unit during long periods of inactivity. The unit emits a bad odorThe unit may absorb odors from the environment (such as furniture, cook-ing, cigarettes, etc.) which will be emitted during operations. The unit’s filters have become moldy and should be cleaned. The fan of the outdoor unit does not operateDuring operation, the fan speed is controlled to optimize product operation.Operation is erratic, unpredicta-ble, or unit is unresponsiveInterference from cell phone towers and remote boosters may cause the unit to malfunction. In this case, try the following:• Disconnect the power, then reconnect.• Press ON/OFF button on remote control to restart operation.
