Frequently Asked Questions - 53783 WestBend

How to clean the WestBend 53783 kettle?
Set the switch to OFF, unplug and let cool. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth. Never immerse the kettle, base, or cord in water.
How often should I descale my kettle?
Frequency depends on water hardness: with soft water, descale once a year; medium hard water, every three months; hard water, once a month. Use undiluted white vinegar for descaling.
What to do if the kettle stops before water boils?
This may be due to heavy limescale buildup. Perform descaling. Make sure the filter is properly in place and the water level is between the MIN and MAX marks.
Can the kettle be used with a travel adapter?
No, the kettle is designed for 120 V voltage only. Use with an adapter or converter could damage the appliance or cause a fire hazard.
How does automatic shut-off work?
The automatic shut-off activates when water reaches boiling. It also activates in case of dry operation (less water than MIN level) to prevent overheating.
Can I open the lid while water is heating?
No, never open the lid during heating. Hot steam can cause burns. Wait until the kettle is off and cooled.
Is the base compatible with other kettles?
No, the heating base is specific to this WestBend 53783 model. Do not use the kettle with another base and vice versa.
Why is there smoke or odor during first use?
This is normal. Manufacturing oils may produce some smoke and odor. Boil 2 to 3 times and discard to remove these residues.
What to do if the kettle does not turn on?
Check that the filter is properly in place, the switch is set to ON, and the kettle is correctly placed on the base. Ensure the electrical outlet works. If the problem persists, contact customer service.
Is the kettle under warranty?
Yes, it comes with a limited one-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in parts and labor. Keep your proof of purchase. For claims, contact Focus Electrics at (866) 290-1851 or by email at service@focuselectrics.com.

CAUTION

To prevent personal injury or property damage, read and follow all instructions and warnings.

OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

  • Do not leave appliance unattended while plugged into electrical outlet.
  • Use extreme caution when pouring as boiling water can cause scalding.
  • Do not refill the water reservoir while the appliance is on. Turn the appliance off and allow to cool before refilling with water.
  • Do not operate without filter in place.
  • Do not open the lid during the heating cycle as scalding may occur.

  • Longer, detachable power-supply cords or extension cords are available and may be used if care is exercised in their use. While use of an extension cord is not recommended, if you must use one, the marked electrical rating of the detachable power-supply cord or extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance. The cord should be arranged so that it will not hang over the counter top or tabletop where it can be pulled by children or tripped over.

USING YOUR KETTLE

First Use: Remove all packaging from the kettle and the power base. Before using, wipe the outside of the kettle with a damp cloth and wash the filter in warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry. Note: We recommend that water be boiled two to three times and emptied after each occasion to remove any residues from the manufacturing process.

  1. Place the appliance on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface, away from any edge.
  2. With switch in the "OFF" position, plug the cord into a 120 volt, AC electric outlet only.
  3. The filter must be in place to activate the auto-shut off feature and for proper operation. Fill the kettle, taking care not to splash the electrical contacts on the bottom of the appliance and observing the "MIN" and "MAX" level markings. If the electrical contact area of the kettle gets wet, it should be dried before use.
  4. Fit the kettle onto the power base. Plug the power base into the electrical outlet and depress the switch into the "ON" position. The red power indicator will illuminate. When the kettle has finished boiling, the automatic shut-off system will switch the kettle to "OFF.".

  5. Always ensure the water level does not exceed the "MAX" level and is above the "MIN" level as indicated by the water level indicator.

  6. Only use the kettle for boiling water.
  7. Do not operate the kettle dry. Always use with water.
  8. The kettle can only be used with the complementing power base. These parts cannot be interchanged with other types or brands of kettles.
  9. Ensure the power is switched to "OFF" before removing the kettle from the base.
  10. Use extreme caution when pouring as boiling water can cause scalding.
  11. Some smoke and/or odor may occur upon heating due to the release of manufacturing oils – this is normal.
  12. Some minor expansion/contraction sounds may occur during heating and cooling – this is normal.
  13. Your kettle is equipped with a self-resetting boil-dry protector: If the kettle is accidentally switched on with less than the minimum level of water, the boil-dry protector will cut off the power. For continued use, switch the kettle to the "OFF" position and allow the kettle and control system to cool down before re-use.

CLEANING YOUR KETTLE

  1. Switch the kettle to the "OFF" position, unplug from the electrical outlet and allow the entire appliance to cool completely before cleaning. CAUTION: Do not immerse the kettle, base, cord, plugs or other electric parts in water or other liquids.
  2. The exterior of the kettle can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
  3. Decalcify the kettle periodically. See the "Decalcifying Your Kettle" section.

DECALCIFYING YOUR KETTLE

- Over time, mineral deposits build up on internal parts and affect the operation of the appliance causing the need for your kettle to be decalcified periodically to maintain performance. The frequency of decalcification depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the kettle. Indications that decalcifying is necessary are:

  • Increased noise during production
  • Excessive steaming
  • Longer heating times

- If usage is regular, decalcifying should be carried out as follows:

  • With soft water, decalcify once per year
  • With medium water, decalcify every quarter year
  • With hard water, decalcify once a month

- We recommend the use of vinegar for decalcifying.

  1. Switch the appliance to the "OFF" position, unplug from the electrical outlet and allow the entire appliance to cool completely before cleaning.
  2. Pour 16 ounces ( 12 Quart mark) of fresh, cool, undiluted, white household vinegar into the water reservoir.
  3. Plug the appliance into the electrical outlet, switch to the "ON" position and allow the kettle to fully heat and shut off automatically. Dispose of "vinegar" when complete.
  4. Follow the same step as above except using clear, cool water to rinse any remaining traces of the vinegar from the kettle. Rinse twice using clean, cool water each time.
