This vacuum cleaner complies with current safety re- quirements. Inappropriate use can, however, lead to per- sonal injury and damage to property. To avoid the risk of personal injury and damage to the vacuum cleaner, please read these instructions carefully before using it for the first time. They contain important information on its safety, operation and maintenance. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any future owner. Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the mains supply when you have finished using it, before changing over accessories, as well as for maintenance work and cleaning. Switch the vacuum cleaner off at the wall socket and unplug it. Correct application This vacuum cleaner is intended for cleaning flooring in domestic households and similar residential environments. This vacuum cleaner can be used for all normal cleaning of carpets, rugs and robust hard flooring. This vacuum cleaner is not intended for outdoor use. This vacuum cleaner is intended for use at altitudes of up to 4000m above sea level. The vacuum cleaner must only be used to vacuum dry floor surfaces. Do not use on people and animals. This vacuum cleaner can only be used by people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience or knowledge, if they are supervised whilst us- ing it or have been shown how to use it in a safe way and understand and recognise the consequences of incorrect operation. Safety with children Danger of suffocation. Packaging, e.g. plastic wrap- pings, must be kept out of the reach of babies and chil- dren. Whilst playing, children could become entangled in packaging or pull it over their head and suffocate. Children under 8 years of age must be kept away from the vacuum cleaner unless they are constantly supervised. Children 8 years and older may only use the vacuum cleaner unsupervised if they have been shown how to use it safely and recognise and understand the consequences of incorrect operation. Children must not be allowed to clean or maintain the vacuum cleaner unsupervised. Please supervise children in the vicinity of the vacuum cleaner and do not let them play with it. Technical safety Before using the vacuum cleaner and its accessories, check for any visible signs of damage. Do not use a dam- aged appliance. Ensure that the connection data on the data plate of the vacuum cleaner (voltage and frequency) match the mains electricity supply exactly. The vacuum cleaner is suitable for use with 50 Hz or 60 Hz without modification. The mains electrical plug must be fitted with an appro- priate fuse. Reliable and safe operation of this vacuum cleaner can only be assured if it has been connected to the mains elec- tricity supply. While the vacuum cleaner is under guarantee, repairs should only be undertaken by a Miele authorised service technician. Otherwise the guarantee will be invalidated. Do not pull or carry the vacuum cleaner by the cable, and be careful not to damage the cable when withdrawing the plug from the socket. Keep the cable away from sharp edges and do not let it get squashed, for example, under a door. Avoid running the vacuum cleaner over the cable. This could damage the cable, plug or socket. The appli- ance must not be used if any of these have suffered dam- age. Do not use the vacuum cleaner if the cable is damaged. If the cable is damaged it must be replaced together with a complete cable rewind. For safety reasons this must only be done by Miele Service or a Miele authorised service technician. When vacuuming, in particular fine dust, e.g. sawdust, sand, plaster, flour, talcum powder etc., electrostatic charges build up naturally. Under certain conditions these charges will be released. To avoid the unpleasant effects of these discharges, a metal inlay has been incorporated into the underside of the handle. Please make sure that you keep your hand in constant contact with this metal strip during vacuuming. Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. Clean only with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth when disconnected from the mains supply. Repairs should only be carried out by a Miele authorised service technician. Repairs and other work by unqualified persons can cause considerable danger to users. Correct use To avoid the risk of damage, do not use the vacuum cleaner without the dustbag, dust compartment filter and exhaust filter in place. The dust compartment cover will not close without a dustbag fitted. Do not force it. Do not vacuum up anything which has been burning or is still glowing e.g. cigarettes, ashes or coal, whether glow- ing or apparently extinguished. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any water, liquid or damp dirt. Wait until any freshly cleaned or sham- pooed rugs or carpets are completely dry before attempt- ing to vacuum. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum toner dust. Toner, such as that used in printers and photocopiers, can conduct electricity. Do not vacuum up any inflammable or combustible li- quids or gases and do not vacuum in areas where such substances are stored. Do not vacuum at head height and do not let the suction get anywhere near a person's head. Accessories To avoid the risk of injury when vacuuming with a Miele Turbobrush, do not touch the rotating roller brush. It is not advisable to vacuum directly with the handle, i.e. without an accessory attached as the rim could get dam- aged and you could hurt yourself on sharp edges. Only use genuine dustbags, filters and accessories with the "ORIGINAL Miele" logo on them. Otherwise the manu- facturer cannot guarantee the safety of the product. Disposal of the packing mater- ial The packaging is designed to protect the appliance from damage during transportation. The packaging materials used are selected from materials which are environmentally friendly for disposal and should be recycled. Recycling the packaging reduces the use of raw materials in the manufactur- ing process and also reduces the amount of waste in landfill sites. Disposing of the dustbag and filters Dustbags and filters are made from en- vironmentally friendly materials, and can be disposed of with the normal house- hold waste, as long as they have been used exclusively for general household dust. Disposing of your old appli- ance Before disposing of your old appliance remove the dustbag and filters and dis- pose of them with your household waste. Electrical and electronic appliances of- ten contain valuable materials. They also contain specific materials, com- pounds and components, which were essential for their correct function and safety. These could be hazardous to hu- man health and to the environment if disposed of with your domestic waste or if handled incorrectly. Please do not, therefore, dispose of your old appliance with your household waste. Please dispose of it at your local com- munity waste collection / recycling centre for electrical and electronic ap- pliances, or contact your dealer or Miele for advice. You are also respons- ible (by law, depending on country) for deleting any personal data that may be stored on the appliance being disposed of. Notes on Delegated Regulation (EU) No. 665/2013 and 666/2013 This vacuum cleaner is a domestic va- cuum cleaner and is classified as a uni- versal vacuum cleaner in accordance with the above delegated regulations. These operating instructions, the EU data sheet and the energy efficiency la- bel for this vacuum cleaner are available to download from the Miele website. The annual energy consumption stated on the data sheet and on the energy ef- ficiency label describes the indicative annual energy consumption (kWh per year), based on 50 cleaning cycles. Ac- tual energy consumption depends on how the vacuum cleaner is used. All tests and calculations were carried out according to the following harmon- ised standards applicable at the time in due consideration of the published reg- ulation guidelines of the European Commission from September 2014: a) EN 60312-1 Vacuum cleaners for household use - Part 1: Dry vacuum cleaners - Methods for measuring the performance. b) EN 60704-2-1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Test code for the determination of airborne acoustical noise - Part 2-1: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaners. c) EN 60335-2-2 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-2: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaner and water suction appliances. Not all floorheads and accessories sup- plied with the vacuum cleaner are inten- ded for intensive cleaning of carpets or hard floors as described in the regula- tions. The following floorheads and set- tings were used to determine the val- ues: a) For energy consumption, cleaning class and sound power level on carpet the adjustable floorhead supplied was used in the carpet position (see "Pre- paring for use"). b) For energy consumption and clean- ing class on hard floors the adjustable floorhead supplied was used in the hard floor position (see "Preparing for use"). If your vacuum cleaner is supplied as standard with the SRD hard floorbrush, this is designed for intensive vacuuming of hard floors with gaps and crevices and will have been used to determine the above values on hard floors. Exception: FiberTeQ floorhead For energy consumption and cleaning class on carpet and hard floors and sound power level on carpet the Fiber- TeQ floorhead was used in the carpet position. The values on the EU data sheet and the energy efficiency label refer exclus- ively to the combinations and settings of floorheads on the different floor sur- faces described here. Original Miele dustbags, dust compart- ment filters and exhaust filters were used for all measurements. Preparing for use Attach the suction hose (dia. 01) Insert the hose connector into the suction socket on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces. To detach the suction hose (dia. 02) Press the release buttons at the side of the hose connector, and lift the hose from the socket. Connect the suction hose to the handle (dia. 03) Fit the connector at the other end of the suction hose into the handle until it clicks into position. Your vacuum cleaner is fitted with one of the following suction tubes, depend- ing on model: – EasyLock suction tube – Telescopic suction tube – Comfort telescopic suction tube To assemble the EasyLock tube (dia. 04) Hold the suction tube by the connec- tion piece and push it into the second suction tube, turning it clockwise or anti-clockwise until it clicks into posi- tion. Slide the connection piece upwards until it clicks into position. Connect the handle to the suction tube (dia. 05 + 06) Insert the handle into the suction tube until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces. To detach the handle To detach the handle from the suc- tion tube, press the release button and pull the handle out of the suction tube, twisting it slightly as you do so. Adjusting the telescopic suction tube (dia. 07) One part of the telescopic tube is packed inside the other, and it can be adjusted to suit your height for comfort- able vacuuming. Press the release button and adjust the tube to the desired height. Adjusting the Comfort telescopic suction tube (dia. 07) One part of the Comfort telescopic tube is packed inside the other, and it can be adjusted to suit your height for comfort- able vacuuming. Grasp the release mechanism and adjust the telescopic suction tube to the required length. Connect the suction tube to the floorhead (dia. 08) Push the suction tube into the floor- head and turn it clockwise or anti- clockwise until it clicks into position. To separate the suction tube from the floorhead press the release button and pull the suction tube away from the floorhead, twisting it slightly as you do so. To adjust the floorhead (dia. 09, 10 + 11) This vacuum cleaner can be used for daily cleaning of carpets, rugs and ro- bust hard flooring. Miele offer a range of other floorheads, brushes and accessories for other types of flooring and special requirements (see "Optional accessories"). Please observe the flooring manu- facturer's cleaning and care instruc- tions. Vacuum carpets and rugs with the brush retracted: Press the foot control. Clean hard flooring which is not sus- ceptible to scratching, as well as floor- ing with gaps or deep crevices in it with the brush protruding: Press the foot control. If the suction power of the adjustable floorhead seems too high, reduce the suction until the floorhead is easier to manoeuvre (see "Use - To regulate the suction power"). Using the SRD hard floorbrush (depending on model) Please observe the flooring manu- facturer's cleaning and care instruc- tions. This hard floorbrush is especially suit- able for vacuuming floors with deep gaps and crevices, e.g. old wooden flooring. To activate the exhaust filter change timestrip on the exhaust filter Depending on model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters (dia. 12). a AirClean b Active AirClean 50 (black) c AirClean Plus 50 (light blue) d HEPA AirClean 50 (white) If your vacuum cleaner is fitted with fil- ter b, c or d, you need to activate the exhaust filter timestrip. Lift the release catch for the dust compartment lid and raise the lid as far as it will go (dia. 13). Remove the indicator strip (dia. 14). Press the exhaust filter timestrip in- dicator (dia. 15). After approx. 10 - 15 seconds a thin red line will appear in the left hand side of the display (dia. 16). Close the dust compartment lid se- curely, making sure it clicks into posi- tion. Take care not to trap the dust- bag when doing so. How the exhaust filter timestrip works The exhaust filter timestrip indicator shows the remaining functional life of the exhaust filter. ating hours, or approx. one year of av- erage use, the display will be com- pletely filled with red (dia. 17). Using the accessories supplied (dia. 18) Crevice nozzle Dusting brush Upholstery nozzle Some models are supplied as standard with one of the following accessories which are not illustrated. – AllergoTeQ floorhead – Turbobrush These are supplied with their own oper- ating instructions. To open the accessories compart- ment (dia. 19) Press the release button on the ac- cessories compartment lid. The accessories compartment will then open. Take out the accessory you require. Press down firmly on the lid to close it. Standard adjustable floorhead (dia. 20) For general use and also for vacuuming the stairs. For safety reasons when vacu- uming stairs it is best to start at the bottom of the stairs and move up- wards. Use Unwind the mains cable (dia. 21) Pull the mains cable out to the re- quired length (max. cable length ap- prox. 6.5 m). Insert the plug into the socket cor- rectly and switch on. If vacuuming for longer than 30 minutes, the mains cable must be pulled out to its fullest extent. Other- wise there is a danger of overheating and damage. To rewind the cable (dia. 22) Switch off at the wall socket and re- move the plug. Press the rewind foot switch. The cable will rewind automatically. To switch on and off (dia. 23) Press the On/Off foot control . To regulate the suction power (dia. 24) The suction power can be regulated to suit the type of flooring being cleaned. Reducing the suction power reduces the amount of effort required to man- oeuvre the floorhead. The vacuum cleaner has symbols on the controls which indicate the type of use the settings are suitable for. Downloaded from www.vandenborre.been

This setting is also very quiet Loop pile carpet and rugs Hard flooring and heavily soiled carpets and rugs When using the adjustable floorhead, if the suction seems too high, reduce the suction until the floorhead is easier to manoeuvre. Turn the suction power selector manually to the suction power setting you require. To open the air inlet valve (dia. 25) It is easy to reduce the suction power for a short time, e.g. to prevent rugs or other objects being sucked into the va- cuum cleaner. Open the air inlet valve on the handle far enough to reduce the suction power. The floorhead will be easier to man- oeuvre. Close the valve when you are ready to use full power again. During vacuuming When vacuuming, pull the cleaner be- hind you on its wheels. You can stand it upright for vacuuming stairs and curtains etc. When vacuuming, in particular fine dust, e.g. sawdust, sand, plaster, flour, talcum powder etc., electro- static charges build up naturally. Setting down, transportation and storage Park System for pauses during vacu- uming (dia. 27) The Park system allows you to conveni- ently park the suction tube and floor- head during pauses. Slot the floorhead into the slot in the parking attachment. If your vacuum cleaner is on a slop- ing surface, e.g. a ramp, - retract the telescopic suction tube fully - do not use the park system if your vacuum cleaner has an EasyLock suction tube. Park system for storage (dia. 28 + 29) Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply when you have finished using it. Switch it off at the wall socket and unplug it. If your vacuum cleaner has an Easy- Lock suction tube you can separate the two sections for storage purposes. Press the release button on the lower section and pull the top section out. Push the connection piece attached to the upper tube into the lower tube. Stand the vacuum cleaner upright. If your vacuum cleaner has a tele- scopic suction tube, retract the tubes fully so that it takes up less room for storage. Slot the floorhead downwards into one of the parking attachments on the side of the vacuum cleaner. This makes the vacuum cleaner easier to carry or store. Maintenance Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply for maintenance work and for cleaning. Switch off at the wall socket and un- plug it. The Miele filtration system consists of three components: – Original Miele dustbag – Motor protection filter – Original Miele exhaust filter These will need to be replaced from time to time to ensure that your vacuum cleaner performs efficiently. We recommend only using genuine dustbags, filters and accessories with the "ORIGINAL Miele" logo on them. This will ensure that the suc- tion power of the vacuum cleaner is maintained, giving the best possible cleaning results. Dustbags with the "ORIGINAL Miele" logo on them are not made from pa- per or paper-based materials and nor do they have a cardboard collar. This is why our dustbags are particularly long-lasting and reliable. Please note that appliance faults and damage originating from the use of accessories which do not carry the "ORIGINAL Miele" logo will not be covered by the appliance guarantee. Purchasing new dustbags and filters Original Miele dustbags and filters are available from the Miele Webshop, Miele and your Miele supplier. Ordering the correct dustbags and filters Only use original Miele GN dustbags with a blue collar and original Miele fil- ters. These are identified by the "ORI- GINAL Miele" logo on the packaging. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains four dustbags, one AirClean exhaust filter and one motor protection Downloaded from www.vandenborre.been

filter. Original Miele multi-packs contain 16 dustbags, four AirClean exhaust fil- ters and four motor protection filters. Original Miele exhaust filters can also be purchased separately from your Miele Dealer or from Miele. Please quote the model number of your va- cuum cleaner when ordering to make sure you get the correct filter. You can also order all accessories via the Miele webshop. When to change the dustbag (dia. 30) Change the dustbag when the colour marker in the dustbag change indicator turns red, or sooner if it is no longer ef- fective (see possible reasons for this below). Miele dustbags are disposable and designed for single use only. Dispose of the dustbag when full. Do not at- tempt to reuse. Blocked pores in used dustbags will reduce the suc- tion power of the vacuum cleaner. To check the dustbag change indic- ator Attach the standard adjustable floor- head to the vacuum cleaner. Switch the vacuum cleaner on and select the highest power setting. Lift the floorhead off the floor a little. How the dustbag change indicator works The dustbag change indicator is set for normal household dust. This generally contains a mixture of dust, hair, threads, carpet fluff, grit etc. However, if the cleaner has been used to vacuum up fine dust, such as plaster, brick dust, cement or flour, the pores of the dustbag will become blocked very quickly. This affects the air permeability of the bag, and the marker will indicate that the bag is "full" even when it is not. If this happens you must still change the dustbag because suction power will be greatly reduced by blocked pores in the dustbag. If, on the other hand, a large amount of hair and carpet fluff which typically con- tains a lot of air is vacuumed up, the in- dicator may fail to react even though the bag is full. You should still change it. Both these extremes can occur. How to replace the dustbag (dia. 31 + 32) Press the release buttons at the side of the hose connector, and lift the hose from the socket (dia. 02). Lift the release catch for the dust compartment lid and raise the lid as far as it will go (dia. 13). The dustbag has a flap which closes automatically when the dust compart- ment lid is raised to prevent any dust escaping. Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar. Fit the new dustbag into the holder as far as it will go. Leave it folded up when you take it out of the box. Close the dust compartment lid se- curely, making sure it clicks into posi- tion. A safety device prevents the lid clos- ing without a dustbag in place. Do not use force! Insert the hose connector into the suction socket on the vacuum cleaner until it clicks into position. To do this, line up the guides on the two pieces (dia. 01). When to change the motor protection filter Replace this filter every time you start a new packet of dustbags. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains a motor protection filter. Mul- tipacks contain four motor protection filters. How to change the motor protection filter (dia. 33) Open the dust compartment lid. Pull the dustbag out by the grip on the collar. Lift up the filter frame until it clicks and remove the old filter. Hold by the clean, unsoiled section to remove it. Replace with a new motor protection filter. Close the filter frame. Fit the dustbag into the holder as far as it will go. Close the dust compartment lid se- curely, making sure it clicks into posi- tion. Take care not to trap the dust- bag when doing so. When to replace the exhaust filter Depending on model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters (dia. 12). a AirClean Replace this filter every time you start a new packet of dustbags. Every packet of original Miele dustbags contains one AirClean exhaust filter. Multipacks con- tain four AirClean filters. b Active AirClean 50 (black) c AirClean Plus 50 (light blue) d HEPA AirClean 50 (white) Replace this filter when the exhaust fil- ter timestrip indicator is completely red (dia. 17). The indicator lights up after approximately 50 hours of operation which is equivalent to about a year of average use. You can continue vacuum- ing when the light comes on. However, the suction power will be reduced as will the effectiveness of the filter if it is not replaced in good time. How to replace the AirClean exhaust filter (dia. 34 + 35) Do not use more than one exhaust fil- ter at a time. Open the dust compartment lid. Release the filter grille and raise it up- wards as far as it will go. Grasp the used AirClean filter by the clean, unsoiled section and take it out (see arrow). Replace it with a new AirClean ex- haust filter. Downloaded from www.vandenborre.been

If you wish to fit an Active AirClean 50, AirClean Plus 50 or HEPA AirClean 50 filter, see "Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another". Close the filter grille. Close the dust compartment lid. Replacing the Active AirClean 50, AirClean Plus 50 and HEPA AirClean 50 exhaust filters (dia. 36 + 37) Do not use more than one exhaust fil- ter at a time. Open the dust compartment lid. Lift the exhaust filter and remove it. Insert a new exhaust filter making it sure it goes in properly, then push it down into position. Press the exhaust filter timestrip in- dicator (dia. 15). After approx. 10 - 15 seconds a thin red line will appear in the left hand side of the display (dia. 16). If you wish to fit an AirClean filter, see "Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another". Close the dust compartment lid. Replacing one type of exhaust filter with another (dia. 12) Depending on model, your vacuum cleaner will be fitted as standard with one of the following exhaust filters: a AirClean b Active AirClean 50 (black) c AirClean Plus 50 (light blue) d HEPA AirClean 50 (white) Do not use more than one exhaust fil- ter at a time. When changing the filter please note

1. If you wish to replace exhaust filter a

with filter b, c or d, it is essential that you remove the filter grille before you fit the new exhaust filter. You must also activate the exhaust filter timestrip indicator (dia. 15).

2. If you wish to replace exhaust filter b,

c or d with filter a, it is essential that you also fit the filter grille * (dia. 35).

• Filter grille - see "Optional ac- cessories". When to change the thread lifters (not possible on EcoTeQ Plus floor- heads) The thread lifters on the suction inlet to the floorhead can be replaced. Check them from time to time and replace them if the pile has worn down. How to replace the thread lifters (dia. 38) Use a suitable screwdriver to remove the thread lifters from the slots. Fit new thread lifters. Cleaning the roller on the AllTeQ floorhead (dia. 39) Release the bearing (with bayonet fit- ting) using a coin. Press the bearing out, and remove. Remove the roller. Remove any threads and hair, replace the roller and refit the bearing, locking it back into position. Replacement parts are available from your Miele Dealer or from Miele (see end of booklet for contact details). Cleaning and care Always disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the electrical supply be- fore cleaning it. Switch off at the wall socket and unplug it. Vacuum cleaner and accessories The vacuum cleaner and all plastic ac- cessories can be cleaned with a propri- etary cleaner suitable for plastic. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, glass cleaning agents, all- purpose cleaners or oil-based condi- tioning agents. Dust compartment The dust compartment can, if neces- sary, be cleaned using a dry duster, brush or, if available, a second vacuum cleaner to vacuum the dust out. Do not let the vacuum cleaner get wet. If moisture gets into the ap- pliance, there is a risk of electric shock. Downloaded from www.vandenborre.been

What to do if... Problem Cause and remedy The vacuum cleaner switches off automatic- ally. A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner off automatically if it gets too hot. This can occur if, for instance, large articles block the suction tube or when the dustbag is full or contains particles of fine dust. A heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter can also be the cause of overheat- ing. Switch the vacuum cleaner off immediately using the On/Off foot control . Electrical connection for the UK All electrical work should be carried out by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current national and local safety regulations (BS 7671 in the UK). The voltage and fre- quency are given on the data plate loc- ated underneath the vacuum cleaner. Please ensure that these match the household mains supply. The fuse rat- ing is quoted on the plug. Non-rewireable plugs BS 1363 The fuse cover must be re-fitted when changing the fuse, and if the fuse cover is lost the plug must not be used until a suitable replacement is obtained. The colour of the correct replacement cover is that of the coloured insert in the base of the plug, or the colour that is em- bossed in words on the base of the plug, (as applicable to the design of plug fitted).
