Frequently Asked Questions - Cinema SUB Paradigm

How to install the feet of the Paradigm Cinema SUB subwoofer?
Follow the provided template. On the glossy side, place the foot exactly according to the template before removing the adhesive. On the cloth side, locate the screw holes by feeling the fabric, then screw in the feet.
What is the best position to place the Cinema SUB subwoofer?
Place the subwoofer near a wall, ideally between the front speakers. In a corner, bass is more intense but less precise. Near a wall offers a good balance.
How to connect the Cinema SUB subwoofer to a receiver?
Use an RCA cable to connect the receiver's Sub/LFE output to the subwoofer's line level input. Connect to the right (mono) output. Ensure all devices are off before connecting.
How to adjust the subwoofer level?
Use a known music recording. First set the crossover frequency to the middle of the 'Normal' range. Slowly adjust the level until the bass is clearly audible but not intrusive.
What to do if the bass is weak or the sound seems out of phase?
Use the phase switch (0° or 180°) to align the subwoofer's phase with the speakers. Listen to determine the best position. Also try moving the subwoofer to avoid cancellations.
What is the warranty for the Paradigm Cinema SUB?
The speaker is warranted for 5 years against defects in materials and workmanship. The amplifier and parts are warranted for 3 years. The warranty applies to the original purchaser from an authorized dealer and is not transferable.
Can I use this subwoofer with other brands of speakers?
Yes, the subwoofer can be integrated into any audio system via its RCA line input. The phase and crossover frequency adjustment allow it to adapt to different configurations.
How to clean the Cinema SUB subwoofer?
Use a dry cloth to clean the surface. Do not use liquid or abrasive products. Avoid getting the subwoofer wet.
What to do if the subwoofer does not turn on?
Check that the power cord is plugged in and the outlet works. Ensure the receiver is sending a signal. If the subwoofer is in standby mode, an input signal will wake it automatically.
What are the dimensions and weight of the subwoofer?
Dimensions: 34.2 cm high, 32.2 cm wide and deep (with feet). Weight: 9.7 kg (21.4 lb).

YOUR NEW SUBWOOFER

You are about to experience the accurate deep bass performance of our CinemaSub. This subwoofer offers high output with low distortion, deep bass extension and superb definition. To achieve optimal bass performance for music and home theater, please read through the information that follows.

Input Facilities

Low-Level Input

Allows connection from the Sub/LFE Output of an AV receiver, processor or other suitable low-level source.

Control Facilities

Auto On/Standby

Subwoofer will turn on when it receives an input signal. If no signal is sensed for a period of time, the subwoofer will automatically switch to Standby.

Subwoofer Level

Balances the subwoofer output level to your speaker system's output.

Subwoofer Cut-Off Frequency

Controls the subwoofer's upper-frequency cut-off to match the low-frequency characteristics of your speakers.

Subwoofer Phase Switch

Changes the phase of the subwoofer by 180^ relative to your speakers.

NOTE: As a guide for attaching feet follow the template included with your subwoofer.

  1. Decide whether you want subwoofer to sit cloth side up or gloss side up. This decision is important, once you have attached feet the installation is permanent.
  2. Align template with edges of subwoofer. NOTE: On cloth side, the two edges are beveled so template will not lie perfectly flush. Don't sweat this!
  3. Attaching Feet On Gloss Side:

Before removing backing do a preliminary placement, positioning the first foot exactly as shown on the template. Once you are comfortable, remove backing and attach foot. Attach remaining feet using the same procedure.

Attaching Feet on Cloth Side:

Feel through cloth for screw hole underneath. Position foot over hole and screw in. Attach remaining feet following the same procedure.

  1. Paradigm logo: remove backing and carefully position as shown.

SUBWOOFER PLACEMENT

We recommend positioning your subwoofer close to the wall, between the front speakers. Corner placement (1) provides the most bass, but sometimes at the expense of accuracy. A subwoofer placed near a wall (2) usually provides a good balance of quantity and accuracy. Ensure that the power cord is accessible.

SAFETY PRECAUTION: Before proceeding with this section be sure to read and follow all safety precaution instruction notices at the beginning of this manual.

Paradigm Cinema SUB - SUBWOOFER CONNECTION - 2

Paradigm Cinema SUB - SUBWOOFER CONNECTION - 3

Turn all components OFF before connecting the subwoofer.

Ensure subwoofer is installed in a location where any rear amplifier parts (panels, heatsinks, etc.) cannot be accidentally touched.

We recommend the use of high-quality cables and connectors when hooking up your subwoofer (see your Dealer).

Low-Level Input

(For use with a receiver, processor or control unit with a Sub-Out/LFE-Out jack.)

Using an RCA-to-RCA interconnect cable connect the subwoofer using the Right (Mono) input as shown.

SETTING SUBWOOFER CONTROLS

When setting up your subwoofer and fine tuning it to compliment your system, use music and video soundtracks that you know well. They should contain selections with extended bass that is continuous and repetitive. Set any tone or equalizer controls on your receiver or preamplifier to flat (zero) and switch any loudness controls off.

Room acoustics vary. Experiment with subwoofer placement to find the best position. Certain subwoofer positions may cause some bass frequency cancellation—when your speakers and subwoofer are “out-of-phase” they work against each other through the crossover region and bass is reduced. If bass sounds “weak” or “dislocated,” change the phase according to the instructions in point 4, below. When adjusting your subwoofer, remember that bass should not be overbearing—the subwoofer should not draw attention to itself—but it shouldn’t be “thin” or difficult to hear, either. Use the following set-up tips to fine-tune subwoofer bass in your listening room:

I. Turn the Subwoofer Cut-Off Frequency Control to the middle of the "Normal" range.
2. Slowly rotate the Subwoofer Level Control until you match the subwoofer output level with the level of your speakers. Bass should be clearly audible but not intrusive.
3. If the sound is too "thin" set the Subwoofer Cut-Off Frequency Control higher than the "Normal" range; if the sound becomes "boom" set the Subwoofer Cut-Off Frequency Control lower than the normal range.
4. If the bass sounds weak or "dislocated" you may have a phase alignment problem. Your CinemSub has a Phase Switch which is normally set to the 0^ position. Switch it to the 180^ position—this will switch the phase of the subwoofer by 180^ relative to your speakers. Listen to determine if you hear more bass. If you don't hear more bass, return the Phase Switch to its original position and then experiment with subwoofer placement to find an area of the room where there is less bass cancellation.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

PROBLEMSOLUTION
No Sound·Make sure receiver, preamp or amplifier is plugged in and turned on. Check power outlet at the wall is working. ·Are headphones plugged in, or is the system on Mute? ·Re-check all connections.
No Sound from One or More Speakers·Check your balance control or VC-150VolumeControl (if using). ·Check that all power cords are properly plugged in and functioning ·Swap a non-working speaker with one that works to determine if the problem is with the speaker or something else (i.e. wiring, amplifier).
Lack of Bass or Dislocated Image·One or more speakers may be connected out of phase (their polarity is reversed). ·Re-check to ensure that each speaker's cable is connected with correct polarity: red (+) to red (+) and black (-) to black (-).
