Some operating functions are available depending on the model.
2 3 4EN 7 Before use, read the separate safety instructions first! Temperature safety A sensor continuously measures the temperature of certain parts of the hob. Every cooking zone is equipped with a sensor that measures the temperature of the bottom of the pan to avoid any risk of overheating when a pan boils dry. In case of temperatures rising too high, the power is reduced or the hob switches off automatically. Cooking-time limiter The cooking-time limiter is a safety function of your cooking appliance. It will operate if you forget to switch off your hob. Depending on the setting you have chosen, the cooking time will be limited as follows: Cooking level Maximum operating time (hours) 1 8 h 2 8 h 3 8 h 4 4 h 5 4 h 6 4 h 7 2 h 8 2 h 9 2 h Healthy cooking Burning point of different types of oil To ensure your food is fried as healthily as possible, it’s recommended to choose the type of oil according to the frying temperature. Each oil has a different burning point at which toxic gasses are released. The below table shows the burning points for various types of oil. Oil Smoke point °C Oil Smoke point °C Extra virgin olive oil 160 °C Sunflower oil 227 °C Butter / Coconut oil 177 °C Corn oil / Peanut oil 232 °C Canola oil 204 °C Olive oil 242 °C Virgin olive oil 216 °C Rice oil 255 °C SAFETYEN 8 USE Induction noises A ticking sound
- This is caused by the capacity limiter on the left and right zones. Ticking can also occur at lower settings. Pans are making noise
- Pans can make some noise during cooking. This is caused by the energy flowing from the hob to the saucepan. At high settings this is perfectly normal for some pans. It will not damage either the pans or the hob. The fan is making noise
- To enlarge the lifespan of the electronics, the appliance is equipped with a fan. If you use the appliance intense, the fan is activated to cool down the appliance and you will hear a buzzing sound. The fan runs on for several minutes after the hob has been switched off. Pans
- Always place a pan in the middle of a cooking zone.
- Induction cooking requires a particular quality of pan.
- Only use pans that are suitable for electric and induction cooking with: ▷ a thick base (minimum 2.25 mm); ▷ a flat base.
- The best are pans with the ‘Class Induction’ quality mark. Pans that have already been used for cooking on a gas hob are no longer suitable for use on an induction hob. You can check for yourself whether your pans are suitable using a magnet. A pan is suitable if the base of the pan is attracted by the magnet. Suitable Unsuitable Special stainless steel pans Earthenware Class Induction Stainless steel Hard-wearing enamelled pans Porcelain Enamelled cast-iron pans Copper / Aluminium Plastic Be careful with enamelled sheet-steel pans! The enamel may chip (the enamel comes loose from the steel), if you switch the hob on at a high setting when the pan is (too) dry; the base of the pan may warp - due, for example, to overheating or to the use of too high a power level.EN 9 USE
- Never use pans with a misshapen base. A hollow or rounded base can interfere with the operation of the overheating protection, so that the appliance becomes too hot. This may lead to the glass top cracking and the pan base melting.
- Damage arising from the use of unsuitable pans or from boiling dry is excluded from the guarantee. Minimum pan diameter
- The diameter of the bottom of the pan must be at least: ▷ 14 cm ▷ 25 cm for Bridge induction zones (with link function active)
- You will achieve the best results by using a pan with the same diameter as the zone. If a pan is too small the zone will not work. Pressure cookers
- Induction cooking is very suitable for cooking in pressure cookers. The cooking zone reacts very quickly, and so the pressure cooker is quickly up to pressure. As soon as you switch a cooking zone off, the cooking process stops immediately. Power level setting The cooking zones have 9 levels. Beside it there is a level ‘boost’ (B). Set the power level by touching the slider. At the first touch, the level is set according to the part of the slider that you touch. By sliding along the slider, the power level setting is changed. By sliding to the right, the level increasing, while sliding to the left decreases the level. When you move your finger away from the slider, the cooking field starts to operate at the level set. Power distribution cooking zones
- The cooking zones on the right influence each other. Also the cooking zones on the left influence each other. The power is automatically distributed when these cooking zones are used at the same time. This does not have any consequences up to setting 9. Selecting the Boost setting for one of the cooking zones, however, automatically switches the other cooking zone to a lower setting.
- If one of the cooking zones is set to boost and you want to set the other zone to Boost, the cooking zone that is set to boost will automatically be switched to a lower setting.
- The right and left cooking zones do not influence each other. You can set both cooking zones to Boost.EN 10 Pan detection If the hob does not detect a (ferrous) pan after the cooking power has been set, the pan detection symbol and the selected power setting will flash alternately in the display and the hob will remain cold. If a (ferrous) pan is not placed on the cooking zone within 1 minute, the cooking zone will automatically switch off (see also chapter ‘Pans’). Cooking-timer/minute minder
- A cooking-timer can be set for each active cooking zone.
- The hob also has a minute minder. Both the cooking-timer as well as the minute minder can be set for a maximum of 99 minutes.
- The minute minder works in the same way as the cooking-timer, but is not linked to a cooking zone. When the hob is switched off the minute minder is aborted.
- The minute minder. can only be switched off when the hob is switched on. Select the desired function:
- Cooking-timer — the timer is linked to a active cooking zone. After the set time has elapsed, the cooking zone will switch off automatically.
- Minute minder — no cooking zone will be switch Off after the set time has elapsed. Only an alarm will sound. Boost
- The ‘Boost’ function is used to cook at maximum power for a short period of time (maximum 5 minutes). The power is reduced to the previous setting at the end of the maximum boost time. Boost can only be set if the temperature of the hob allows it.
- When ‘Boost’ is active no cooking timer can be set. USEEN 11 USE Indications in the display In display Status Power setting cooking zone; 1 = low setting / 9 = high setting Boost function active Timer link indication Bridge cooking zones link function selected No (suitable) pan on cooking zone (pan detection symbol) Key lock function active Residual heat indicator; The hob has a residual heat indicator for each cooking zone to show those which are still hot. Although the hob is switched off, the indicator ‘H’ will remain on for as long as the cooking zone is hot! Avoid touching them when this indicator is lit. Danger! Risk of burns. Fault code; See ‘Troubleshooting table’ Hob functions table Function Key(s) to use Description Link The Bridge cooking zones can be linked to each other. This creates one large zone that can be used for a large fish pan or one large cooking pan. ▷ Use a (fish) pan where at least one of the centre/ middle positions of the Bridge zones is covered. Timer The timer can be set separately for each cooking zone. Cooking times of up to 99 minutes can be programmed. The timer alarm beeps after the set time has passed. The cooking zone automatically switches off when the set time has elapsed. When no cooking zone is selected the timer works as a minute minder (no automatic switch off). Lock Key Lock function; to lock the keys during operation. It will not be possible to make any adjustments by touching the keys. Only the On/off key will be active to be able to stop operation of the hob. Boost You can use the boost function to cook for max. 5 minutes at the highest power level. The boost function can only be activated if it is applicable with the cooking zone selected.EN 12 Cooking settings Because the settings depend on the quantity and composition of the contents of the pan, the table below is intended as a guideline only. Use setting ‘boost’ to:
- bring the food or liquid to the boil quickly;
- wok Use setting 9 to:
- fry boiled potatoes;
- deep fry foods. Use setting 7 and 8 to:
- fry thick slices of breaded meat;
- fry thin slices of (breaded) meat; Use setting 4-6 to:
- complete the cooking of large quantities;
- defrost hard vegetables;
- fry thick slices of breaded meat. Use settings 1-3 to:
- When food comes to the boil, reduce the temperature setting.
- Using a lid will reduce cooking times and save energy by retaining the heat.
- Minimize the amount of liquid or fat to reduce cooking times.
- Start cooking on a high setting and reduce the setting when the food has heated through. Simmering, cooking rice
- Simmering occurs below boiling point, at around 85 ˚C, when bubbles are just rising occasionally to the surface of the cooking liquid. It is the key to delicious soups and tender stews because the flavours develop without overcooking the food. You should also cook egg-based and flour thickened sauces below boiling point.
- Some tasks, including cooking rice by the absorption method, may require a setting higher than the lowest setting to ensure the food is cooked properly in the time recommended. Searing steak
- To cook juicy flavorsome steaks: ▷ Stand the meat at room temperature for about 20 minutes before cooking. ▷ Heat up a heavy-based frying pan. ▷ Brush both sides of the steak with oil. Drizzle a small amount of oil into the hot pan and then lower the meat onto the hot pan. ▷ Turn the steak only once during cooking. The exact cooking time will depend on the thickness of the steak and how cooked you want it. Times may vary from about 2 – 8 minutes per side. Press the steak to gauge how cooked it is – the firmer it feels the more ‘well done’ it will be. ▷ Leave the steak to rest on a warm plate for a few minutes to allow it to relax and become tender before serving. For stir-frying
- Choose an induction compatible flat-based wok or a large frying pan.
- Have all the ingredients and equipment ready. Stir-frying should be quick. If cooking large quantities, cook the food in several smaller batches.
- Preheat the pan briefly and add two tablespoons of oil.
- Cook any meat first, put it aside and keep warm.
- Stir-fry the vegetables. When they are hot but still crisp, turn the cooking zone to a lower setting, return the meat to the pan and add your sauce.
- Stir the ingredients gently to make sure they are heated through.
- Serve immediately.EN 14 Start cooking Use of the touch keys Place the tip of your finger flat on a key or the slider to achieve the best results. You do not have to apply any pressure. In the event of a permanent connection, set the switch in the power supply lead to zero. Contact the service department. Troubleshooting table If the appliance does not work properly, this does not always mean that it is defective. Try to deal with the problem yourself first by checking the points mentioned below or check for more information the website ‘www.etna.nl’. Symptom Possible cause Solution The display lights up when the hob is activated for the first time. This is the standard set-up routine. Normal operation. The fan runs on for several minutes after the hob has been switched off. The hob is cooling. Normal operation. A slight smell is noticeable the first few times the hob is used. The new appliance is heating up. This is normal and will disappear once it has been used a few times. Ventilate the kitchen. The pans make a noise while cooking. This is caused by the energy flowing from the hob to the saucepan. At high settings this is perfectly normal for some pans. It will not damage either the pans or the hob. You have switched on a cooking zone, but the display shows ‘u’. The pan you are using is not suitable for induction cooking, or has a diameter of less than 12 cm. Use a suitable pan. A cooking zone suddenly stops working and you hear a signal. The preset time has ended. Switch off the bleep by touching the + key of the timer. The hob is not working and nothing appears in the display. There is no power supply due to a defective cable or a faulty connection. Check the fuses or the electric switch (if there is no plug). A fuse blows as soon as the hob is switched on. The hob has been wrongly connected. Check the electrical connections. TROUBLESHOOTINGEN 21 Symptom Possible cause Solution Bridge zone link symbols appears in the displays. The slider is not working. The bridge zone link function is activated. Tips for energy-efficient cooking with hobs
- Always use the right size of pan for the amount of food you are cooking.
- Put just enough water in the pan to cover vegetables.
- Choose the right size of zone for the pan.
- Always put lids on pans to keep the heat in.
- Turn down or turn off the cooking zone once the cooking temperature or state is reached.
- Use a steamer to cook vegetables, that way you can layer a number of vegetables on top of each other and still use one ring, or use a pan with a divider.
- Use a pressure cooker for cooking pulses, and even joints of meat, whole meals, or stews.
