How to set the clock on the Sony ICD-UX71 voice recorder?
When using for the first time or after removing the battery for more than 3 minutes, the SET DATE & TIME screen appears. Use the ▲/▼ buttons to set the year, month, day, hour, and minutes, then press ENT. You can also set the clock via the menu by holding down /MENU, then selecting DETAIL MENU > DATE & TIME.
How to record a voice message?
First select a folder (FOLDER01 to 05) by pressing /MENU, then ▲/▼ and ENT. Then press the ● (record/pause) button in stop mode. Speak into the built-in microphones. To stop, press ■ (stop). The message is recorded automatically after the last message in the folder.
How to play a recorded message?
Select the folder containing the message with /MENU and the ▲/▼ buttons, then press ENT. Use the ◀/▶ buttons to choose the desired message, then press ▶ (play). Adjust the volume with VOL +/–. To stop, press ■ (stop).
How to erase a specific message?
Select the message to erase. Hold down /MENU, choose ERASE A FILE in the menu, then press ENT. The message is played. Select EXECUTE and press ENT to confirm erasing. Note: this action is irreversible.
How to erase all messages in a folder?
In stop mode, select the folder to erase with /MENU. Hold down /MENU, choose ERASE ALL, then EXECUTE and ENT. All messages in the folder will be deleted. To cancel, select CANCEL at the confirmation step.
How to transfer files from the computer to the voice recorder?
Connect the recorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable. The device appears as a drive named IC RECORDER. Drag and drop music files (MP3/WMA) or folders to this drive. You can copy up to 500 folders and 5000 files in total. Safely disconnect before removing the cable.
How to change the display language?
Hold down /MENU to access the menu. Select DETAIL MENU > LANGUAGE. Choose the desired language from the available options (English, Russian, etc. depending on the model). Press ENT to confirm.
What type of battery to use and how to charge it?
Use a rechargeable NH-AAA battery (supplied) or an alkaline LR03 (AAA) battery. To charge the rechargeable battery, connect the recorder to a computer via the USB cable. Charging occurs automatically. The operation indicator flashes during charging. Do not use non-rechargeable batteries with the charger.
Does the ICD-UX71 voice recorder have an FM radio?
No, the ICD-UX71 model (without the F suffix) does not have an FM radio. The FM function is available only on the ICD-UX71F, ICD-UX81F, and ICD-UX91F models.

This Quick Start Guide describes only basic operations, such as how to record, play back, or erase messages. The operating instructions explaining all the features and functions are supplied with the IC recorder as PDF files in 19 languages stored on the supplied CD-ROM. You can copy the PDF files of the operating instructions to your computer. Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer, and just follow the instructions shown on the screen. If the instructions are not shown on the screen, right-click the CD-ROM on Windows Explorer to open, and double-click [SetupLauncher.exe]. Getting Started

Step 1: Preparing a Power Source

Remove the film on the display window before you use the IC recorder.

Inserting the battery

1 Slide and lift the battery compartment lid.

2 Insert one NH-AAA rechargeable battery with correct polarity, and close the lid.

3 Charge the battery by connecting the USB connector of the IC recorder to your computer.

Disconnecting the IC recorder from your computer

Follow the procedures below; otherwise, data may be damaged.

1 Make sure that the operation indicator is not flashing.
2 Disconnect the IC recorder from the USB connector of the computer.

On the Windows screen, left-click "Safely Remove Hardware" on the taskbar, and click "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device."

On the Macintosh screen, drag the "IC REORDER" on the desktop to "Trash" and drop it there.

For details on disconnecting the IC recorder, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your computer.

Step 2: Setting the Clock

You need to set the clock to use the alarm function or record the date and time.

Clock setting display appears when you insert battery for the first time, or when you insert a battery after the IC recorder has been without battery for more than 3 minutes, "SET DATE & TIME" appears, and then the year section flashes in the display window.

While the IC recorder is in the stop mode, you can set the clock using the menu.

1 Select "DATE & TIME" in the menu.

The menu mode will be displayed in the display window.

If you do not press ENT within one minute of entering the clock setting data, the clock setting mode is cancelled and the window will return to the display of the stopmode.

You can select the language to be used for messages, menus, folder names, file names, etc. from 2 languages (European model)/7 languages (other models).

1 Press and hold / MENU to enter the menu mode.

The menu mode window will be displayed.

2 Press or on the control button to select "DETAIL MENU," and then press ENT.

Turning the IC Recorder On or Off

When you are not using the IC recorder, you can prevent the battery from getting weak quickly by turning the power off.

Turning the power off

Slide the HOLD switch in the direction of the arrow in the stop mode. "HOLD" lights up and the key mark flashes and then "POWER OFF" is displayed. The IC recorder turns off within a few seconds.

Turning the power on

Slide the HOLD switch in the opposite direction from that of the arrow. The IC recorder is turned on, and an accessing animation is displayed.

Tips

  • When you are not going to use the IC recorder for a long time, we recommend to turn off the IC recorder.
  • When 10 minutes have passed after you have turned on the IC recorder and leave it without doing anything, the display goes off automatically. (Press any button to show the display.)

Recording Messages

1 Select a folder.

① Press /MENU to display the folder selection window.
② Press or on the control button to select the folder in which you want to record messages (FOLDER01-05), and then press ENT.

2 Start recording.

① Press (record/pause) in the stop mode.

The operation indicator lights in red. (When "LED" is set to "OFF" in the menu, the operation indicator does not light.)

You do not need to press and hold

  • (record/pause) while recording.

The new message will be automatically recorded after the last recorded message.

② Speak into the built-in microphones.

3 Press (stop) to stop recording.

The IC recorder stops at the beginning of the current recording.

Playing Back Messages

1 Select a folder.

① Press /MENU.
② Press or on the control button to select the folder, and then press ENT.

2 Press I or to select the message you want to play.

3 Press to start playback.

The operation indicator lights in green. (When "LED" is set to "OFF" in the menu, the operation indicator does not light.)

4 Press VOL + or - on the control button to adjust the volume.
5 Press (stop) to stop playback.

Erasing Messages

You can erase the recorded messages one by one or all messages in a folder at a time.

Note

Once a recording has been erased, you cannot retrieve it.

You can erase unwanted messages, retaining all other messages when the IC recorder is in the stop or playback mode. When a message is erased, the remaining messages will advance and be renumbered so that there will be no space between messages.

1 Select the message you want to erase.
2 Press and hold / MENU to enter the menu mode.

The menu mode window will be displayed.

3 Press or on the control button to select "ERASE A FILE," and then press ENT.

The message to be erased will be played back.

4 Press or on the control button to select "EXECUTE," and then press ENT.

"ERASING ..." appears in the display window and the selected message will be erased.

1 Select the folder containing the messages you want to erase when the IC recorder is in the stop mode.
2 Press and hold /MENU to enter the menu mode.

The menu mode window will be displayed.

3 Press or on the control button to select "ERASE ALL," and then press ENT.

When you are using Windows® 2000 Professional

Install the driver using "SonyRecorder Driver.exe" in the IC recorder.

Connecting the IC recorder to your computer

You can transfer the IC recorder data onto your computer by connecting the IC recorder to the computer. Remove the USB cap from the IC recorder and then connect the IC recorder to the USB connector of your computer. The IC recorder is recognized by the computer as soon as the connection is made. While the IC recorder is connected to the computer, "CONNECTING" is displayed in the display window of the IC recorder.

Tip

If the IC recorder cannot be connected to the USB connector of your computer directly, use the supplied USB connection support cable.

Notes

  • If you connect more than two USB devices to your computer, normal operation will not be guaranteed.
  • Use of this IC recorder with a USB hub or a USB connection support cable other than the supplied cable is not guaranteed.
  • A malfunction may occur depending on the USB devices connected at the same time.
  • Before connecting the IC recorder to the computer, make sure that the battery is inserted in the IC recorder.
  • It is recommended that you disconnect the IC recorder from the computer when you are not using the IC recorder connected to the computer.

Transferring Files from Your Computer to the IC Recorder

You can play back music or language files (MP3/WMA*) from your computer using the IC recorder.

You can make an MP3/WMA file using either a player software application installed on your computer or a commercially available software application.

  • For the file formats that can be played back using the IC recorder, refer to "Specifications" (page 110 in "Operating Instructions").

Copying a music file from your computer to the IC recorder (drag and drop)

1 Connect the IC recorder to your computer (page 19).

On the Windows screen; open "My Computer" and make sure that "IC REORDER" has been recognized. On the Macintosh screen; make sure that an "IC REORDER" drive is displayed on the desk top.

2 Copy the folder in which the music files are stored to the IC recorder.

On the Windows screen using Explorer, and on the Macintosh screen using Finder, drag and drop the folder onto the IC recorder.

The IC recorder can recognize up to 500 folders. You can copy up to 999 files to one folder and up to 5,000 files in total.

Playing Back Music Files

1 Remove the IC recorder from your computer, press /MENU, press ▲ or on the control button to select the folder ( ) in which music files are stored, and then press ENT.

2 Press I or to select the music file you want to play.
3 Press to start playback.
4 Press (stop) to stop playback.

Listening to the FM Radio

(for ICD-UX71F/UX81F/UX91F only)

The headphone cord is an FM antenna, therefore, connect the headphone when listening to the radio.

During FM reception or FM recording, you can switch between the sound from the speaker and the sound from the headphones using the menu. For details, see page 87 in "Operating Instructions."

Note

During FM reception you cannot charge the battery.

Tuning in an FM radio Station

The menu mode window will be displayed.

2 Press or on the control button to select "FM RADIO," and then press ENT.

The IC recorder enters FM radio mode.

You can switch the display between preset number and frequency by pressing ENT.

3 Tune in a station.
4 Press or on the control button repeatedly to tune in a station or press and hold or on the control button until the frequency digits begin to change on the display.

The IC recorder automatically scans the radio frequencies and stops when it finds a clear station.

If you cannot tune in a station, press or on the control button repeatedly to change the frequency step by step.

When a station you tune in is a preset station, the preset number is displayed, otherwise, "P --" appears instead.

Presetting FM Radio Stations Automatically

You can preset up to 30 FM radio stations automatically using the preset menu.

1 Press and hold /MENU to enter the menu mode when listening to the FM radio.

The menu mode window will be displayed.

2 Press or on the control button to select "AUTO PRESET," and then press ENT.

The IC recorder automatically scans for available radio frequencies and the stations will be stored in memory from the lower frequencies to the higher ones.

To stop the automatic presetting

Press (stop). The preset numbers stored until you press the (stop) button remain in memory.

Precautions

On power

  • Operate the unit only on 1.5V or 1.2V DC. Use one NH-AAA rechargeable battery or one LR03 (size AAA) alkaline battery.

On safety

  • Do not operate the unit while driving, cycling or operating any motorized vehicle.

On handling

  • Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or mechanical shock.
  • Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, remove the battery and have the unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

On noise

  • Noise may be heard when the unit is placed near an AC power source, a fluorescent lamp or a mobile phone during recording or playback.
  • Noise may be recorded when an object, such as your finger, etc., rubs or scratches the unit during recording.

On maintenance

  • To clean the exterior, use a soft cloth slightly moistened in water. Do not use alcohol, benzine or thinner.

Backup recommendations

To avoid potential risk of data loss caused by accidental operation or malfunction of the IC recorder, we recommend that you save a backup copy of your recorded messages on a tape recorder or to a computer, etc.
