How do I connect my THORENS MM08 turntable to an amplifier?

Use the included MM002 phono preamplifier. Connect the RCA cables from the turntable to the inputs of the MM002 (left/right), then connect the outputs of the MM002 to a line input on your amplifier (Aux, CD, etc.). Make sure to connect the ground wire if your tonearm has one.

Which cartridge should I use with the MM08?

The THORENS MM08 turntable is compatible with moving magnet (MM) cartridges with an input impedance of 47 ohms. Thorens recommends using a quality cartridge for optimal performance.

How do I adjust the rotation speed?

The rotation speed is adjusted via the belt and motor. Refer to the manual for precise adjustments. Available speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.

Why is the sound weak or distorted?

Check that you are using the line input of your amplifier and not the phono input. Make sure the RCA connections are fully inserted and that the MM002 preamplifier is powered on with the switch set to ON.

Can I use the MM08 without a preamplifier?

No, the output of the phono cartridge requires a preamplifier to be amplified to line level. The MM002 is included and must be used.

How do I clean my THORENS turntable?

Use a soft, dry cloth for the casing. For the cartridge, use an anti-static brush. Never use chemical products.

What should I do if the turntable does not spin?

Check the power supply of the preamplifier and the on/off switch. Make sure the belt is properly in place and the motor is powered.

Installation and Operation

1. Connect your turntable to the MM 002

Plug the leads from your turntable's cartridge to the input sockets on the back of the MM 002: the Right channel (red) cable into the Right input and the Left channel (white) into the Left input. If your tonearm has a separate earth wire for shielding purposes please connect it to the earth binding post on the rear panel of the MM 002.

Your amplifier should be powered off or muted and the MM 002's power supply should not yet be connected.

2. Connect the MM 002 to your amplifier

Use high-quality RCA interconnect cables to connect the MM 002 to an auxiliary line-level input on your amplifier (Aux, Tape in, CD, Tuner, etc.).

Please ensure that the right channel output is connected to the right channel input on your amplifier, and the left channel output is connected to the left channel input on your amplifier.

If your amplifier is already equipped with a phono stage and you are upgrading your system with the MM 002, do not connect the output of the MM 002 to the phono input: this is meant to be connected only to a turntable's cartridge output, not to a line level output such as that of the MM 002.

3. Connect the power adaptor

Make sure the power switch is in the OFF (outwards) position and the power adaptor is not connected to a mains socket.

Connect the Thorens power supply cable to the power socket on the rear panel.

After choosing and installing the correct snap-in mains plug for your country, connect the power adaptor to a live mains socket then press the power button on the rear panel to the ON (inwards) position.

Always use the supplied mains power adaptor or an original Thorens spare part!

If you prefer, the MM 002 can be left powered on thanks to its very low power consumption levels. If you plan to leave it unused for a prolonged period of time, we suggest disconnecting the power adaptor from the mains socket.

The MM 002 is now ready for use. Switch on or un-mute your amplifier and enjoy your favourite music!
