The splitter

In order to separate the ADSL signal from the normal telephone signal, you need to use a splitter. This enables you to simultaneously make calls and surf the Internet using the same telephone line. The signal comes from the wall socket or the meter cupboard and enters the splitter. Two telephone cables are connected to the output of the splitter. One leads to the modem and the other to the telephone.

Note! The ADSL modem does not include a splitter. It can be obtained from various DIY stores.

Connecting the Sweex ADSL 2 Modem

  1. Connect the power adaptor (included) to the rear of the modem and the mains socket. The LED under PWR is lit. In the event the LED is not lit, check the connections of the power adaptor to the ADSL modem and the mains socket.

  2. Connect the telephone cable (RJ-11) carrying the ADSL signal to the ADSL port at the rear of the modem. The LED under ADSL will now start to blink. After approximately 30 seconds the LED will be lit continuously. In the event the LED is not lit, check whether the splitter is properly connected and/or whether the ADSL line is ok.

  3. Switch on the computer and connect it to the rear of the modem using a network cable (UTP RJ-45). You can select any of the ports 1, 2, 3 and 4. The corresponding LED at the front of the modem will be lit. In the event the LED fails to light up, check whether the network cable is properly connected to the computer and the modem.

Setting the wireless network

How does it work?

In order to create a wireless network, you need a wireless router, wireless modem or WiFi access point. The wireless router, modem or access point transmits the wireless network. The name of this network, also referred to asSSID, depends on your wireless router, modem or access point and often differs per model or brand. You can often determine the name yourself and thus recognise your own wireless network.

Protection

You could compare a wireless network to radio signals. However, the range of a wireless network at home is not as big. Your home wireless network often has a range of 20 to 30 metres. This means that neighbours and passers-by too can make use of your network. As a result they can get away with surfing on your Internet connection, and they may gain access to your shared folders and files on your network. That is why it is often recommended to secure your wireless network. This protection is set up on the device transmitting the network. In most cases that is the wireless router, modem or access point. By adding a WEP or WPA protection code, you secure the network. This code is also referred to as the network key. Enter this code on each computer that wants to connect to that secured network. You can only be part of that network if you enter this code. If you did not enter the network key into the router or modem yourself, ask the installer, manufacturer, supplier or provider for this code.

Connecting the computer to the wireless network

In the bottom left of your screen, go to "Start (Start) ± "Control Panel" (Control Panel).

Then go to "Network and Internet Connections" (Network and Internet Connections). Open "Network Connections" (Network Connections).

Or, if the Windows classic style is used:

"Start" (Start) "Settings" (Settings) "Network Connections" (Network Connections).

Right-click "LAN Connection" (LAN Connection) or "Wireless Network connection" (Wireless Network connection) and select "View Available Wireless Networks" (View Available Wireless Networks).

SWEEX MO300 - Connecting the computer to the wireless network - 1

Always click "Refresh network list" (Refresh network list) top left in this window first, to obtain the most recent listing.

Select the name (also referred to as SSID) "Sweex M0300" by clicking it once. Now click "Connect (Connect). If it has successfully connected to the wireless network, the notification "Connected" (Connected) appears after a couple of seconds. You now have an active wireless network.

If you receive a notification saying the wireless connection cannot be configured because it is managed by another programme, disable that software and start again.

We recommend securing the wireless part of the modem. How to do this is described further down in this manual. Once secured, the network will show as "Sweex M0300" with a message below detailing "Security-enabled wireless network" (Security-enabled wireless network). When connecting to this secured network you will be prompted for the "Network key" (Network key). If the network key you have entered is incorrect, a notification saying "Limited or no network connection" appears after a couple of seconds. Your wireless connection is not satisfactory. Re-connect to the wireless network and check the network key.

If you change something in the wireless settings of the modem causing you to lose the wireless connection, then complete these steps again.

Modem access (Login)

Open your web browser. In this example we use 'Internet Explorer'.

SWEEX MO300 - Modem access (Login) - 1

The standard modem IP address is: 192.168.251.1. An IP address is a unique number required by each network device, including a computer or modem, in order to be active within that network. Without an IP address you are unable to make connections within a network.

Type the modem IP address 192.168.251.1 in the browser address bar. You can now access the modem.

SWEEX MO300 - Modem access (Login) - 2

The modem login screen appears. Fill out the login name and the corresponding password. The standard login is "sweex" and the corresponding password is "mysweex".

If this login screen fails to appear, recheck the settings of your Internet browser as described above. Also check the IP address of your computer. In this IP address, only the digits after the last dot may deviate from the IP address of the modem (e.g.: 192.168.251.xxx).

Do this as follows:

Win2000/WinXP: Click "Start" (Start) - "Run" (Run) - Type cmd - press ENTER - In the black window type ipconfig - press ENTER and your IP address is displayed.

Once logged in, the main screen of the modem appears.

SWEEX MO300 - Do this as follows: - 1

This screen displays the current Internet connection and a variety of system information.

Setting the Internet Provider (ISP)

Important! The Setup Wizard is located on the Sweex CD-ROM. This installation procedure will show you step by step how to setup the router.

In the event that your provider has not been listed, you can enter alternative settings via the "Config" option. In order to obtain these alternative settings, contact your Internet provider. In order to store the settings click "Apply" and then "Save All".

These settings only have to be configured once in the router. This means that no matter how many computers you connect to the router, the following settings only have to be done on one computer. This is because the settings are not stored on the computer but on the router.

To this end, go to the "Internet Connection Wizard". The following screen appears:

"Status: Connected" indicates that a successful connection has been established with your provider. You can now access internet.

Wireless settings and security

We always recommend setting the modem with a computer physically connected with the modem by means of a cable. This is because you will lose the wireless connection with the modem while storing these settings.

In the main menu click "Advanced" and then "Wireless".

SWEEX MO300 - Wireless settings and security - 1

At "Access Point" you can activate or deactivate the wireless network.

The standard SSID is "Sweex_M0300". At "SSID" you have the possibility to change this. We recommend that you never change this, this way you can always recognize the modem.

Securing the wireless network

Securing the wireless network in the Sweex Wireless Broadband Router 300 Mbps can be done in two ways. The trusted manual way (WEP, WPA and WPA2), where you determine and enter your own network key, or with the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) function, where the router and the computer "agree" on a network key and use it automatically with one push of a button to secure the network.

It is not possible to use both ways at the same time. Therefore, if you have computers that do not support WPS we recommend you use the WPA or WPA2 security.

WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)

Securing a network fast and easy is done with WPS. This function only works with computers that use a wireless card or USB dongle that supports WPS.

SWEEX MO300 - WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) - 1

  1. By pressing the WPS button on the rear side of the router for 2 seconds you can activate the WPS function. The light will start to blink.
  2. A wireless computer that supports WPS can now scan for the router and use the automatically generated network key; the network is secured.

For future computers you want to add to the network, follow the same procedure. You can also read a PIN code from the router and enter it in the computers the "old" way.

WPA and WPA2 security

By scrolling down in the "Wireless" window you can secure the wireless network.

To activate WPA security, follow these steps:

SWEEX MO300 - WPA and WPA2 security - 1

  1. At "Authentication Type" select the option "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK"
  2. At "Pre-Shared Key" enter the network key. You can make this up yourself and it can be a number combination or a password.
  3. Press "Save" at the bottom of the page to save the settings.

The modern is now secured. Reconnect your wireless computer.

Opening ports in the modem (Port Forwarding and DMZ)

We advise you to use a fixed IP address for the computers or consoles that you open ports for. So that these computers always have the same IP-address similar to the address they have in the router. It can occur that the router gives a different IP-address to the computer making the forwarding or DMZ assignment invalid for that computer.

How do you give a computer a fixed IP-address

This is only necessary for computers you want to open a port for using the Forwarding or DMZ function. Follow the steps in the chapter "Configuration computer to connect to the router". Instead of selecting "Obtain an IP address automatically" select Use the following IP address".

In our example the IP-address begins with (192.168.203.xxx). As last number enters a number that is unique in your network. We advice you to choose a number between 150 and 200. So a possible IP-address could be (192.168.203.150). The following computer has (192.168.203.151) etc.

As "Subnetmask" enter: 255.255.255.0

At both "Default gateway" and "Preferred DNS-server" you enter the IP-address you use to login to the router. In our example: 192.168.203.1

At "Alternative-DNS-server" you do not have to enter anything.

Click "OK" twice to save the settings and close the window.

In this modern the build-in firewall can not be activated. However, it is possible to open ports for programs and games that require this. By going to "Advanced Setup" "Firewall" you can change the port settings.

SWEEX MO300 - How do you give a computer a fixed IP-address - 1

Leave the "Firewall" option set to "Disabled". Select "Enable" if you want to protect the modern against "Syn flooding", "Ping of death", "Teardrop" and "Land attack".

Click "NAT".

SWEEX MO300 - Click "NAT". - 1

Thereafter click "Virtual Server"

SWEEX MO300 - Thereafter click "Virtual Server" - 1

The Sweex ADSL 2 Modem has a preprogrammed list with common programs and games.

  1. At "Rule Index" choose a number that has not yet been used to make a new entry.
  2. At "Application" select the program or the game in the list.
  3. At "Local IP Address" enter the IP-address of the computer of which the port has to be opened.
  4. Click "Save" at the bottom of the page to activate the settings.

If the program or game is not in the list you can also manually open ports.

  1. At "Rule Index" choose a number that has not yet been used to make a new entry.
  2. At "Name" enter a made up name.
  3. At "Start Port Number" and "End Port Number" enter the respective port numbers. If you only want to open one port, enter it twice.
  4. At "Local IP Address" enter the IP-address of the computer of which the port has to be opened.
  5. Click "Save" at the bottom of the page to activate the settings.

In some situations, or when using a game console, you can choose to let the computer or game console pass the firewall entirely. This happens in the so called "demilitarized zone" ("DMZ"). This option is located in the main screen of the port settings "Port Forwarding" under "Advanced". Be aware that now you miss the security the firewall of the router has to offer. All ports are opened for the computer that you place in the DMZ. Only one computer can be placed in the DMZ.

SWEEX MO300 - Thereafter click "Virtual Server" - 2

Click "DMZ".

SWEEX MO300 - Thereafter click "Virtual Server" - 3

  1. Click DMZ
  2. Select the option "Enabled".
  3. At "DMZ Host IP Address" enter the IP-address of the computer for which the ports have to be opened.
  4. Click "Save".

Upgrading the modem firmware

To update the modem the so called 'firmware' has to be updated. This can be done by going to "System Tools" in the menu and then "firmware".

SWEEX MO300 - Upgrading the modem firmware - 1

Here the firmware of the modem can be updated. New firmware can be downloaded from the Sweex website under the "Service and support" tab. When the firmware file is a ZIP-file, ensure you unzip it and place it where you can easily find it again on your computer.

Thereafter click "Browse" and select the unzipped firmware file. In many cases the name of the file will end with "...firmwareRos".

To start the firmware update click "Upgrade".

Do not interrupt this procedure. The modem can be damaged by this. Wait for the upgrade to be finished.

Resetting the modem to the factory settings

Resetting the Sweex ADSL 2 modem to the factory settings can be done in two ways.

Important! Afterwards all settings that are required for your connection and network have to be reconfigured.

After the reset the modem will restart. During the restart the factory settings will be restored and the computer will lose its connection to the modem for approximately 30 seconds. After that the modem is approachable by the default IP-address (192.168.203.1).

Way 1: At the back of the modem there is a reset button. Use a small item to press the button.

Hold the button for 10 seconds.

Way 2: In the menu of the modem go to "System Tools". Click "Sysrestart".

SWEEX MO300 - Important! Afterwards all settings that are required for your connection and network have to be reconfigured. - 1

Choose "Factory Default Settings" and "Restart" to confirm.

Additional tips and further information about the remaining functions of the modern can be found in the advanced English manual on the CD-ROM.
