Charging the neckband speaker

The neckband speaker is equipped with a rechargeable built-in lithium ion battery. Charge the battery with a USB AC adaptor (commercially available) and the USB Type-C cable (supplied) before using the neckband speaker.

When using the neckband speaker for the first time, be sure to charge the built-in battery for more than 1 hour before turning on the neckband speaker.

1 Connect the neckband speaker to an AC outlet to charge it.

Connect one end of the USB Type-C cable (supplied) to the USB Type-C port on the neckband speaker and the other end to a USB AC adaptor (commercially available), and then connect the USB AC adaptor to an AC outlet. The neckband speaker supports USB AC adaptors capable of delivering an output current of 1.5 A.

Diagram showing cable connection with labeled components and a highlighted orange circle containing an eye symbol

The (power)/ (BUETOOTH) indicator stays lit in orange while charging is in progress.

The estimated charging time varies depending on the power output capacity of the connected USB AC adaptor (commercially available). In addition, it may take longer than the charging time stated below depending on the type and specification of the USB AC adaptor and USB cable. The charging time may differ from the time stated below depending on the ambient temperature as well.

The following time is stated as a reference.

  • When a USB AC adaptor capable of delivering an output current of 1.5 A is connected, charging completes in about 4 hours* and the ⏻(power)/ (BLUETOOTH) indicator goes out.
  • When using a USB AC adaptor (commercially available), make sure that it is capable of delivering an output current of 1.5 A or more. You can use a USB AC adaptor with an output current of 0.5 A (500 mA) or more and less than 1.5 A as well, but it may take a very long time before charging completes.

* Time required for the empty battery to be fully charged (100%) while the neckband speaker is powered off.

After you disconnect the USB cable from the neckband speaker upon completion of battery charging, be sure to close the cap securely.

The cap plays a very important role in maintenance of the water resistant performance.

Checking the charging completion

If the built-in battery is fully charged when you connect the neckband speaker to an AC outlet with a USB AC adaptor (commercially available), the (power)/ (BUETOOTH) indicator lights in orange then goes out in about 1 minute.

Built-in battery life

See “Specifications” for the charging time of the rechargeable built-in battery and the BLUETOOTH device playback duration.

When the built-in battery is running low

When you hear a notification sound and voice guidance (Low battery) and the (power)/(BUETOOTH) indicator starts flashing slowly in orange, the rechargeable built-in battery is running low. Charge the neckband speaker ahead of time.

When the remaining battery decreases to such a level that the neckband speaker cannot be turned on, you hear a notification sound and voice guidance (Battery is empty) and the neckband speaker automatically turns off. In such a case, charge the neckband speaker.

When you turn on the power, but the (power)/ (BUETOOTH) indicator lights in blue for about 2 seconds and then the power turns off, the rechargeable built-in battery is empty. In such a case, charge the neckband speaker.

Hint

- You can charge the neckband speaker's built-in battery by connecting the USB cable connected with the neckband speaker to a computer that comes equipped with a USB charging port as well. However, not all the computers are tested and found compatible with this procedure and the procedure is not applicable to home-built computers.

Note

  • Connecting the neckband speaker to an AC outlet or a computer automatically turns off the neckband speaker. While connected with a power source, the neckband speaker does not turn on.
  • The maximum power output will be lower when the built-in battery is running low.
In an extremely cold or hot environment, charging stops for safety. If charging takes a long time, it also makes charging of the neckband speaker stop. To resolve these issues, disconnect the USB cable and connect it back again in an operating temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F), and then charge the neckband speaker once again. Be aware that the room temperature may fall to 5 °C (41 °F) or lower especially in wintertime. Take the ambient temperature into consideration as well for charging the neckband speaker.
  • Do not charge the neckband speaker's built-in battery in places where water may splash on it. The USB Type-C cable (supplied) as well as the USB port behind the cap are not designed for water resistant.
  • Even if you do not intend to use the neckband speaker for a long time, charge the built-in battery to its full capacity once every 6 months to maintain its performance.
  • When the Android smartphone is configured to establish BLUETOOTH connections solely for music playback (A2DP), the remaining battery power of the neckband speaker is not displayed on the smartphone.

Connecting the neckband speaker to a 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer compatible BRAVIA TV via a BLUETOOTH connection

This section describes the procedure to connect a 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer compatible BRAVIA TV via a BLUETOOTH connection directly to your neckband speaker.

Note

- Even if your BRAVIA TV is compatible with 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer, the transmitter (sold separately) may be needed to connect the neckband speaker to your BRAVIA TV. See "Checking how to connect the neckband speaker to a 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer compatible BRAVIA TV" to confirm the connection method that is suitable for your BRAVIA TV.

1 Make the necessary preparations for a BLUETOOTH connection to the neckband speaker.

• Fully charge the rechargeable built-in battery.
- To avoid any sudden loud sound output from the neckband speaker, turn down the volume of both the BRAVIA TV and the neckband speaker before connecting them.
- Bring the neckband speaker within a distance of 1 m (3.2 ft) from the BRAVIA TV.

2 Set the neckband speaker to pairing mode.

To pair the first time after purchase*

While the power is off, press and hold the (power)/(BUETOOTH) button for about 2 seconds until you hear a notification sound. The power turns on and the neckband speaker enters pairing mode, and the (power)/(BLUETOOTH) indicator double flashes in blue.

* Do this procedure if the neckband speaker has been initialized (pairing information has been erased) also.

R +400 - Power +

Confirm that the audio output has switched from the BRAVIA TV to the neckband speaker.

When the BLUETOOTH connection to the BRAVIA TV is complete, the audio output switches from the BRAVIA TV to the neckband speaker, and you can use the 3D surround functions.

For details about 3D surround functions, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your BRAVIA TV.

Hint

The operation of registering a device you want to connect via a BLUETOOTH connection is called pairing. Pairing must be done to connect to a BRAVIA TV via a BLUETOOTH connection to listen to audio through the neckband speaker.
As long as the BLUETOOTH function is activated on a BLUETOOTH device that has previously been connected with the neckband speaker, the neckband speaker is reconnected with the device right after the neckband speaker is turned on.

Note

  • The neckband speaker comes out of pairing mode in about 5 minutes and the (power)/ (BLUETOOTH) indicator on the neckband speaker turns to slow blue flashing. However, when the speaker has no pairing information, for example when you use the BLUETOOTH function for the first time after purchase, the pairing mode is not released. If the neckband speaker comes out of pairing mode before you complete the procedure, repeat the procedure all over again from step 2
  • Once the neckband speaker is paired with the BLUETOOTH device, there is no need to pair them again, except in the following cases:

— Pairing information is deleted in the course of repair work, etc.
— The neckband speaker is already paired with 8 devices and another device is to be paired.

The neckband speaker can be paired with up to 8 BLUETOOTH devices. When a new device is paired in addition to 8 paired devices, the pairing information of the earliest device connected via a BLUETOOTH connection is replaced by the information of the new one.

— The pairing information of the neckband speaker has been deleted from the paired BLUETOOTH device.
— The neckband speaker is initialized.

All the pairing information is deleted. Once the neckband speaker is initialized, it may fail to establish a BLUETOOTH connection with the BRAVIA TV. In such a case, delete the pairing information of the neckband speaker from the BRAVIA TV, and then pair the neckband speaker with the BRAVIA TV all over again.

- Depending on the BRAVIA TV you are using, audio may not be output from the BRAVIA TV when the neckband speaker is connected to the BRAVIA TV via a BLUETOOTH connection. If you want to output audio from the BRAVIA TV, either turn off the neckband speaker or select [BRAVIA Theatre U] from the BRAVIA TV BLUETOOTH settings to disconnect the BLUETOOTH connection between the neckband speaker and the BRAVIA TV.

When the BLUETOOTH connection is unstable, for example when sound interruption occurs, select the “Prioritize Stable Connection” preference. “Prioritize Sound Quality” is the default setting.

With the "Sony | Headphones Connect" app, you can change the preference or check the Bluetooth Connection Quality.

  • Prioritize Sound Quality (default setting): AUTO is selected. The optimal codec is automatically selected from AAC, LDAC, and SBC.
  • Prioritize Stable Connection: SBC is selected.

Note

  • When using the Speaker Add function, the codec automatically switches to SBC.
  • Depending on your environment, selecting the "Prioritize Stable Connection" preference may not help solving the sound interruption issue.

    — A place subject to strong vibration
    — A place where cosmetics, such as a sunscreen, as well as chemical products, such as a bug spray, are stored

  • Place this neckband speaker on a flat, level surface. When placed on a sloped surface, the neckband speaker may fall over or fall off the surface due to its own vibration, resulting in injuries, malfunctions, or performance degradation.

  • Depending on the conditions where this neckband speaker is placed, it may fall off the surface. Do not leave any valuables near the neckband speaker.
  • This neckband speaker is not anti-magnetic. Keep objects susceptible to magnetism (recorded tapes, watches, cash cards and credit cards with magnetic coding, etc.) away from the neckband speaker. When you carry around the neckband speaker, keep this in mind as well.

Other notes

  • The neckband speaker is a precision device, so do not subject it to extreme shock, such as by dropping or hitting it.
Although the neckband speaker heats up during operation, this is not a malfunction.
  • If you use this neckband speaker for a long time, the temperature of this neckband speaker may rise, but it is not a malfunction.
  • Do not use or leave the neckband speaker in an extremely cold or hot environment (temperature outside the range of 5°C - 35°C (41 °F - 95 °F)). If the neckband speaker is used or left in outside the above range, the neckband speaker may automatically stop to protect internal circuitry.
  • If you have any questions or problems concerning the neckband speaker that are not covered in this manual, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Notes on charging

Life span of the built-in lithium ion battery

  • Even if you do not intend to use the neckband speaker for a long time, charge the built-in battery to its full capacity once every 6 months to maintain its performance.
  • If the neckband speaker is not used for a long time, it may take longer to charge the built-in battery.
  • The rechargeable built-in battery has a life span. As time passes and the number of times that the built-in battery is used increases, the capacity of the rechargeable built-in battery slowly decreases. When the amount of time that the built-in battery can be used seems significantly shorter, despite having been fully charged, contact your nearest Sony dealer.
  • When the amount of time that the built-in battery can be used seems significantly shorter, it could mean that the rechargeable built-in battery has expired.
  • The life span of the rechargeable built-in battery differs depending on the usage, environment, and storage method.

About warnings during charging

The (power)/ (BUETOOTH) indicator double flashes in orange when the neckband speaker detects an abnormality in the internal temperature or the rechargeable built-in battery.

  • The ambient temperature exceeds the range of 5°C - 35°C (41 °F - 95 °F).
There is a problem with the built-in battery.
  • When charging to the built-in battery continues for a long time.

  • While battery charging is in progress, the neckband speaker fails to turn on and you cannot use the BLUETOOTH function.
Upon completion of battery charging and removal of dedicated audio adaptor (supplied), be sure to securely close the cap over the USB Type-C port to avoid the risk of malfunction caused by sweat or water ingress.
  • Charging time varies depending on built-in battery usage conditions.

  • Charge the neckband speaker in an ambient temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F). Be aware that the room temperature may fall to 5 °C (41 °F) or lower especially in wintertime.

  • The neckband speaker becomes warm during charging. This is not a malfunction.
  • Avoid exposure to rapid temperature change, direct sunlight, mist, sand, dust, or electrical impacts. Also, never leave the neckband speaker in a car parked in the sun.
  • You can charge the neckband speaker's built-in battery by connecting the neckband speaker to a computer that comes equipped with a USB charging port as well. However, not all the computers are tested and found compatible with this procedure and the procedure is not applicable to home-built computers.
In an extremely cold or hot environment, charging stops for safety. If charging takes a long time, it also makes charging of the neckband speaker stop. To resolve these issues, disconnect the USB cable from the neckband speaker and connect it again within an operating temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F).
  • When using in a place with a high temperature, the volume may decrease to protect the built-in battery.
  • The maximum power output will be lower when the built-in battery is running low.
  • Charging from a USB hub is only guaranteed when you use a self-powered USB hub that carries an authorized logo.
  • While the neckband speaker is connected with a computer that is not connected to an AC outlet, the neckband speaker consumes the battery power of the computer. This means that no trace of water is found inside the neckband speaker after a 10-minute test with water of 10L / min sprinkled from a distance of 300 mm to 500 mm (11 7/8 in to 19 3/4 in) in every direction.
*2 The supplied accessories and the connector of this neckband speaker (USB) are not water resistant. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shocks, do not expose the neckband speaker to water or droplets while using the connector (USB). Do not place a vase or any other liquid-filled container on the neckband speaker.

The water resistant performance of the neckband speaker is based on our measurements under the conditions herein described. Note that malfunctions as a result of water immersion or dust intrusion caused by misuse by the customer are not covered by the warranty.

To maintain water resistant performance

Carefully note the precautions below to ensure proper use of the neckband speaker.

  • This neckband speaker does not have a design that is resistant to water pressure. Do not put the neckband speaker in the water or directly under the water gushing out of the faucet to avoid a malfunction.
  • Do not pour high-temperature water or blow hot air from a hair dryer or any other appliance on the neckband speaker directly. Also never use the neckband speaker in a place subject to high temperatures, such as in a sauna or near a heat source.

When the neckband speaker is soiled on the surface, remove the soil by gently dabbing at it with a dry, soft cloth or a well-wrun cloth dipped in tap or lukewarm water before the surface is stained with the soil. Depending on the type of soils, however, this may fail to remove the soil.
  • Wipe off the moisture on its surface, and put the neckband speaker on a dry soft cloth to drain the collected water inside the neckband speaker. Then, dry the neckband speaker in an airy place until no moisture remains.
  • The sound quality may change when water enters the speaker section of the neckband speaker. It is not malfunction. Wipe off the moisture on its surface, and put the neckband speaker on a dry soft cloth to drain the collected water inside the neckband speaker. Then, dry the neckband speaker in an airy place until no moisture remains.

Note

  • If the surface of the neckband speaker gets dirty, do not use detergent, thinner, benzine, etc. to clean the neckband speaker because it will affect the water repellent function of the neckband speaker.
  • Especially in cold regions, be sure to wipe off the moisture after using the neckband speaker. Leaving moisture on its surface may cause the neckband speaker to freeze and malfunction.
  • If sand grains, etc. enter the fabric or other part of the neckband speaker, remove them carefully. Never use a vacuum cleaner, etc. on the neckband speaker. It may cause damage of the speaker section or other part of the neckband speaker.

On BLUETOOTH communications

  • The BLUETOOTH wireless technology is a short-range wireless technology that enables communication between digital devices, such as smartphones and computers. The maximum communication distance may vary depending on the presence of obstacles (people, metal objects, walls, etc.) or the electromagnetic environment.
Microwaves emitting from a BLUETOOTH device may affect the operation of electronic medical devices. Turn off the neckband speaker and other BLUETOOTH devices in the following locations, as it may cause an accident:

— in hospitals, near priority seating in trains, locations where inflammable gas is present, near automatic doors, or near fire alarms.

  • The neckband speaker supports security functions that comply with the BLUETOOTH standard as a means of ensuring security during communication using BLUETOOTH wireless technology. However, depending on the configured settings and other factors, this security may not be sufficient. Be careful when communicating using BLUETOOTH wireless technology.
  • Sony shall assume no responsibility for any damages or loss resulting from information leaks that occur when using BLUETOOTH communications.
  • BLUETOOTH connections with all BLUETOOTH devices cannot be guaranteed.

  • BLUETOOTH devices connected with the neckband speaker must comply with the BLUETOOTH standard prescribed by Bluetooth SIG, Inc., and must be certified as compliant.

  • Even when a connected device complies with the BLUETOOTH standard, there may be cases where the characteristics or specifications of the BLUETOOTH device make it unable to connect, or result in different control methods, display, or operation.

  • Noise may occur or the audio may cut off depending on the BLUETOOTH device connected with the neckband speaker, the communications environment, or surrounding conditions.

  • Depending on the device to be connected, it may require some time to start communications.
  • When charging, the neckband speaker cannot be turned on and the BLUETOOTH function cannot be used.
  • Since BLUETOOTH devices and wireless LAN (IEEE802.11ax/b/g/n) use the same frequency band (2.4 GHz), radio wave interference may occur during use near devices equipped with a wireless LAN, which may cause a decrease in communication speed, noise, or connection failure.

Note

  • To use the BLUETOOTH function, the other BLUETOOTH device must support the same profile as the neckband speaker. However, even if the same profile is supported, the functions may differ depending on the specifications of the BLUETOOTH device.
Due to the characteristics of BLUETOOTH wireless technology, there is a slight delay between the playback of the audio and music on the transmitting side and the playback on the neckband speaker side.
  • Establishing a BLUETOOTH connection between the neckband speaker and a device with a built-in radio or tuner may cause noise in audio from the device. The neckband speaker should not be used with such a device via a BLUETOOTH connection.

- When using the neckband speaker, keep it away from a device such as a radio or a tuner. Use of the neckband speaker in the vicinity of such a device may cause noise in audio from the device.

Unable to charge the neckband speaker

  • When a USB AC adaptor (commercially available) is in use, make sure that the USB cable is connected securely to the neckband speaker and the USB AC adaptor. Then, make sure that the USB AC adaptor is connected securely to an AC outlet.
Use of a USB AC adaptor with an output current of less than 0.5 A (500 mA) is not guaranteed for battery charging. The charging time may vary depending on the ambient temperature as well.
  • You can charge the neckband speaker's built-in battery by connecting the USB cable connected with the neckband speaker to a computer that comes equipped with a USB charging port as well. However, not all the computers are tested and found compatible with this procedure and the procedure is not applicable to home-built computers.
  • Charge the neckband speaker in an ambient temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F). Be aware that the room temperature may fall to 5 °C (41 °F) or lower depending on the season, for example, especially in wintertime.
  • Depending on the type of the USB AC adaptor, battery charging may fail.
  • Battery charging with a computer fails when the computer enters standby (sleep) or hibernation mode. In such a case, change the power settings of the computer and charge the battery all over again.

  • Make sure that the equalizer function is deactivated on the connected device.
  • To use the Speaker Add function to connect two neckband speakers via a BLUETOOTH connection, update the software on both neckband speakers to the latest version.
  • Before playing audio on the connected devices, disconnect the dedicated audio adaptor (supplied) and the dedicated audio cable (supplied) from the USB Type-C port.
  • Bring the neckband speaker close to the device you are connecting. Move any obstructions that may be between the neckband speaker and the device you are connecting.

While connected with a TV

  • Make sure that the TV, the neckband speaker, and the transmitter (sold separately) are turned on.
  • Disconnect the transmitter (sold separately) from the BRAVIA TV compatible with 360 Spatial Sound Personalizer and connect it back to the BRAVIA TV. Be sure to plug the cable all the way into the port.
  • Move the transmitter (sold separately) away from a device such as a microwave oven and a wireless LAN access point.
  • Keep the neckband speaker and the transmitter (sold separately) away from a device such as a radio or a tuner. Use of the neckband speaker and the transmitter (sold separately) in the vicinity of such a device may cause noise in audio from the device.
  • If there is radio interference with another wireless device (a TV, a soundbar, etc.), change the location of the transmitter (sold separately). (For example, move the transmitter from left to right or center.)
  • When using the Speaker Add function, if any other BLUETOOTH device is connected to the TV, then disconnect those other BLUETOOTH devices.

While connected with a device other than a TV

  • To use a video call application on a computer, operate the computer to change the BLUETOOTH profile to HFP or HSP.
During a video call, the sound quality may deteriorate depending on the conditions of the communication link.

- Make sure that the microphone of the neckband speaker is not turned off.

- View the audio settings on the BLUETOOTH device to make sure that the neckband speaker is configured to output audio during a phone conversation.

- There are some BLUETOOTH devices that can have the BLUETOOTH connection quality changed. If your device is compatible with this function, select “Prioritize Stable Connection (SBC)” for the BLUETOOTH connection quality. For details, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the device.

- Make sure that the computer is configured to output audio through [BRAVIA Theatre U] when connected with the neckband speaker.

- When listening to music from a computer through the neckband speaker, the sound quality may be poor (e.g., difficulty in hearing the vocal sound, etc.) for the first few seconds after a connection is established. This is due to the computer specifications (priority is given to stable connection at the beginning of communication and then switched to sound quality in several seconds) and does not indicate a malfunction of the neckband speaker.

If the sound quality does not improve in a few seconds, operate the computer to establish a connection for music playback (A2DP). For operations on the computer, refer to the operating instructions supplied with your computer.

- If the neckband speaker and the source BLUETOOTH device for music playback are connected with the HFP or HSP BLUETOOTH profile, operate the connected device to switch to BLUETOOTH connection for music playback (A2DP).

- Establishing a BLUETOOTH connection between the neckband speaker and a device with a built-in radio or tuner may cause noise in audio from the device.

The neckband speaker should not be used with such a device via a BLUETOOTH connection.

- When using the neckband speaker, keep it away from a device such as a TV, a radio, or a tuner. Use of the neckband speaker in the vicinity of such a device may cause noise in audio from the device.

- When using the Speaker Add function or call function, if any other BLUETOOTH device, such as a mouse or keyboard, is connected to the BLUETOOTH device, then disconnect those other BLUETOOTH devices.

- Sound may not be output, depending on the application being used in the connected BLUETOOTH device. If this happens, turning the app off and then on again may improve the symptoms.

- When playing audio in the analog audio input mode, confirm that the dedicated audio adaptor (supplied) and the dedicated audio cable (supplied) are firmly inserted into the USB Type-C port.

- If the device connected by the dedicated audio cable (supplied) is monaural, sound may be output only from the left speaker (L side).
