SOLO 582/585 Mowers are extremely efficient and will assist with the maintenance of a well cared lawn. SOLO 582 / 585 Mowers are designed for private use around the house and for smaller areas only. These mowers are not designed for use in park areas, around sporting facilities and in agriculture and forestry.

A special engine manual is attached to this manual. The engine manual should be considered as part of the complete manual.

Before using your new mower, thoroughly read the operating manual and familiarize yourself with all operational aspects.

Observe all hints, explanations and regulations. Adherence to the operating manual is essential for the proper use of the mower.

Do not use the mower while other persons (especially children) or animals are in close proximity. The operator is responsible for personal injuries or property damage of other persons.

General Safety Guide Lines

Due to potential bodily harm, the mower should not be used for the following purposes:-

• Trimming of shrubs, bushes or hedges
• Pruning of vines or trimming of roof plantings or plants in balcony or window boxes.
• Cleaning and sweeping of footpaths
• Mulching of tree cuttings or hedge clippings
• Leveling of soil such as mole hills or similar
• Drive unit for other equipment
• Trailer
• Transporter (self-propelled models) of all kinds of goods other than the grass clippings in grass catcher. Any use of the mower other than for the purpose it has been designed for voids any claim for warranty.

General Safety Guide Lines for SOLO walk-behind mowers with combustion engine

• Do not allow children to use this mower or any other persons unfamiliar with the operation of this mower. Children under the age of 16 should not use the mower.
• Please observe local regulations which may deter mine the minimum age for using a mower.
• Do not lend the mower to other persons without unfamiliar with the machines without also providing the operating manual.

• Explain possible dangers or potential injury situations to potential operators of the mower.

• Only mow during daylight hours or with sufficient artificial light.

• People fitted with pace makers are not allowed to touch any part of the ignition system during starting of the engine or while the engine is running.
• Mowers with 4-cycle engine are not suitable for slopes with a gradient of 15deg. or more.
• Store your mower in a safe, lockable and dry place with not access for children.

Prior to mowing

• Always check the complete area for objects, such as rocks, wood, bones or similar
• Always wear sturdy shoes and long trousers. Never mow bare footed or with sandals.
• Always mow with either grass catcher of grass deflector and ensure these are properly fitted. Mowing without or damaged catcher / deflector is dangerous.
• Ensure the mowing blade is secured properly and not excessively worn.
• When replacing the blade, observe correct fitting procedure and correct tightening torque.
• Frequently check grass catcher for wear and tear.
• Mowers with 4-cycle engine have to be filled with engine oil. Please refer to the separate engine manual.
• Always check engine oil level.

Fuel

Handling of Fuel

Handling of fuel requires care.

• Gasoline is highly flammable. Refuel outdoors, never indoors.
• Do not smoke or refuel with an open flame in close vicinity
• Do not spill fuel
• If fuel is spilled, clean mower immediately and before starting the mower.
• Avoid any fuel spills on clothing. If necessary, change clothing
• Avoid any fuel spills on the ground (environmental protection)
• Transport and store fuel only in approved and specially marked containers.
• If damage occurs, immediately replace fuel tank,

fuel cap and fuel hose.

- Always check for visible damage

Fueling

Important: Use lead-free standard petrol with confidence.

- Only use the type of fuel recommended in the separate engine manual

- Let engine cool down before re-fuelling

- Clean area around filler cap, remove filler cap and fill fuel only to the bottom edge of the filler neck.

Replace filler cap.

Note: Fuel may contain solvent-like substances.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Always wear gloves while re-fueling

- Do not inhale petrol fumes.

- Fuel should be stored in a place inaccessible for children.

Handling

- The engine should not run in closed rooms. Exhaust gas is poisonous.

- The exhaust / muffler will get very hot. Do not touch.

- For your safety, this mower is equipped with an approved engine brake. As soon as the brake lever is released, the engine and the blade will stop within seconds.

- When mowing on a slope, always ensure safe footing.

- Always operate the mower at walking speed

- Always mow along a slope, never up or down.

- Exercise caution when changing direction on a slope

- Exercise caution when you pull the mower towards you.

- Exercise caution when walking backwards with the mower. Danger of stumbling.

- Always normal body position, ensure good footing and balance.

- Always maintain sufficient safety distance as provided by the length of the handle.

While starting

- Disengage the wheel drive system on self-propelled mowers before commencing the starting procedure.

- Place the mower on level ground for starting.

- Do not start the mower in high grass.

- When starting, ensure your feet in safe distance to the mowing blade

- Never place hands or feet close to any turning parts.

Switch off engine and disconnect spark plug cap

• before checking, cleaning or repairing the mower
• before removing grass clippings from under the mower, especially in the discharge chute area

Always stop the engine

• When removing the grass catcher

• Never use a mower with missing, damaged or faulty safety devices. Only use the mower with correct and checked catcher or with deflector which sits neatly against the mower housing.
• Do not change the basic adjustment of the engine.
• If the mower has hit obstacles, ensure a specialist checks the mower for any damaged or deformed parts before continuing to use the mower.
• Should the mower vibrate in an unusual manner, a check by a specialist is required before continuing to use the mower.

Maintenance and Storage

• Ensure all screw connections are tight
• Never store the mower with petrol in a building where fuel vapor could be ignited by open flames or by a spark.
• Empty the fuel tank outdoors and collect fuel in a suitable container.
• Let engine run until any fuel still left in the carburetor is used up.
• Let mower and engine cool down before storing in a room.
• To avoid any danger of fire, clean battery room, muffler area, fuel tank area and gearbox area (if fitted on the machine) free from grass, leaves or grease / oil.

• Regularly check the grass catcher and discharge flap for wear and ensure their proper working order.

• For safety reasons, replace worn or damaged parts.

• Wear gloves when working near the blade (with plug cap disconnected).
• Cleaning the mower and maintenance work on the mower can only be done with stopped engine and disconnected plug cap.
• For warranty and safety purposes, only use original SOLO parts for any repairs.

Assembly

The mower is ready for operation with only a few assembly steps. The lower handle part is secured with handle pins (see picture 2) and firmly held in place by the clamping block in the mower housing. Loosen both star handles M8 and insert the clamping block into the mower housing until flush. Tighten the star handles. (see picture 4).

Connect the upper handle with the lower handle and secure on both sides with coach bolts 8x45 and washers 8.4 mm dia.. Tighten with star handles on the inside of the handle (see picture 3).

Secure both bowden cables with cable clips to the handle.

Ensure the cables are free of any sharp bends and are not damaged.

Placing starter handle in rope guide

Release the engine brake by pushing the brake lever against the mower handle. Slowly pull the starter handle and rest handle in rope guide on the upper handle (see picture 7).

Note: Take care when folding and unfolding the handles to ensure that cables are not damaged in any way.

Folding of Handle

To fold the handle,

• disconnect starter rope from rope guide (pos. 4)
• loosen both clamping blocks with star handles and pull out from mower housing
• place lower handle to the rear of the mower
• loosen handles (pos. 15 and
• fold upper handle towards the front.

Grass Catcher

Caution: Install and remove catcher only with stopped engine!

Pull the catcher over the frame and attach plastic retaining flaps in the sequence 1-2-3-4 to the frame (see picture 5)/

Squeeze the upper frame of the catcher to allow the carrying bracket to be fitted (see picture 6).

To fit the catcher (pos. 6), lift the rear flap (pos. 7), rest the catcher frame on the lower guide of the mower housing (1), lift catcher upwards (2) until the catcher completely locks in the discharge flap (pos. 7) (see picture 8).

General Operating Hints for mulching

For mulching, grass should neither be too wet noor to long. For best mulching results set the central height adjuster to a cutting height of 4cm or higher. during maximum growth periods it is also recommended to mulch the lawn twice per week. Your walking speed should be adjustet to the mowing conditions. Do not walk or drive too quickly. This will allow the mulching blade to finely shred all grass clippings and ensure an excellent finish. As with all mowing jobs, a sharp cutting blade is required for mulching. The special mulching blade with 4 offset cutting edges cuts the grass progressively. With the housing insert obstructing the normal grass discharge, the clippings are finally shredded and blown back into the lawn to decompose completely between grass roots. Once the special mulching blade is fitted to the mower, there is no need to refered back to the original cutter blade for mowing with catcher. It is, however, necessary to remove the mower housing insert. With the mulching blade, grass clippings and leaves are reduced in volume and are more suitable for composting (III.15).

Adjustment of Cutting Height

The mowing height can be adjusted from approx. 30 - 80 mm with a central height adjuster (pos. 16). The adjustment is simultaneously for all 4 wheels. Turning the adjuster to the left reduces the cutting height, turning the adjuster to the right increases the cutting height. An indicator (pos. 11) shows the cutting height. Note: Select a cutting height which will not scalp the lawn in uneven areas. Use the lowest setting only on level surfaces.

Engine

Before starting the engine, thoroughly read the attached engine manual as well as the following notes. Adhering to the guidelines provided by the manuals ensure long engine life.

Starting

When starting, always stand to the back or side of the mower. Maintain the safety distance provided by the mower handle (pos. 2). operated with the engine operating lever (pos.3).

The engine is operated with the engine operating lever (pos.3).

Caution: The mower blade will turn as soon as the engine starts. Never reach under the mower housing with your hands or feet.

Note: To be able to start the engine, the engine brake has to be released by pushing the brake lever against the handle (see picture 7).

Starting with cold engine

Starting with warm engine

Move engine regulating lever (pos. 3) to max. position (see picture 9). Pull starter rope until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly.

Note: If the brake lever (pos. 1) is not pushed against the handle (pos. 2) during the starting procedure, the ignition is switched off and the engine brake remains activated. The engine cannot start in that position.

Stopping engine

Move engine regulating lever (pos. 3) to position "min." and release the engine brake lever (pos. 1). The engine will now stop (fig. 9).

Note: As soon as the engine brake lever is released, the electronic ignition is switched off and the engine and blade will stop within seconds.

Mowing Hints

Always observe the safety notes provided at the start of the manual.

Mowing with Grass Catcher

Short and dry grass is easily caught in the catcher (pos. 6). A special fan on the underside of the mower provides a turbo-effect for excellent catching properties of the mower (see picture 14B).

Please note:

Shorter, dry grass is easier to catch than long, wet grass which may lead to clogging under certain circumstances.

Quality of Cut

Height of grass, density and dampness determine the quality of the cut. Dry and not excessively long grass are ideal for a clean cut. Even wet grass can be mown and collected. This may, however, affect the quality of the cut and the ability of the mower to catch the clippings. A sharp mowing blade is a prerequisite for an excellent cut. A blunt blade (which will tear and not cut the grass will turn the lawn yellow) has to be sharpened (see separate section). Mow at a leisurely walking pace and in straight lines with slight overlaps. This will give the cleanest cut.

When cutting long grass, go over the lawn first with a high blade setting and then again across that direction with a lower setting (see picture 10).

Lawn Care

Note: If the full engine power is not required, we suggest you set the engine regulating lever to the Eco-position between max. and min. This will reduce the engine speed, lower the fuel consumption and reduce the emission of harmful substances. (see fig. 9). If possible, only mow when the lawn is dry and the surface is firm. The mower wheels will leave behind tracks on a soft surface.

The more often the grass is cut (preferable weekly), the better and more even is the cut.

Regular cutting strengthens the grass.

Clippings to 1cm length can be left on the lawn. Longer clippings should be collected.

In spring, use the mower with catcher approx. 2 - 3 weeks before normal growth starts. This will clean the lawn area. The cut should reduce the grass by approx.

1.5cm only to achieve a rapid greening. Before mowing, always check the lawn for objects such as rocks, glass, metal objects etc.

The first cut of a new lawn should be at a height of approx. 3 - 4 cm. Maintain that height for approx. 4 - 5 weeks. This will ensure stronger root growth and good density of the lawn. Grass will resist dry periods and hot weather more easily if not cut too short.

Note: SOLO Mowers with rear catcher are particularly suitable for collecting autumn leaves. Only collect

leaves on lawn areas. Using the mower for that purpose on paths etc. is not recommended because of safety risks. When collecting leaves on the lawn, set the cutting height to maximum height. (pos. 11).

Maintenance and Care

For your own safety, always disconnect spark plug cap (pos. 12) before commencing any cleaning or maintenance jobs on the mower. Any tasks which exceed the general maintenance schedule should be performed by an authorized SOLO Service Centre.

Cleaning of Mower

The mower should be cleaned after every mowing, especially the underside of the mower housing, the blade and the wind tunnel.

For cleaning, the mower can be placed on the rear wheels (after removing the star knobs-picture 11) and supported by the lower handle. Empty the fuel tank first. Possible fuel dripping from the carburetor should be caught with a rag. Also refer to notes in this regard in the separate engine manual. Always disconnect the plug cap first. (pos. 12)

Dirt and grass residues can be easily removed straight after mowing. Grass residues and dirt on the underside of the mower impair the discharge of clippings and influence the quality of the cut. A dirty blade can lead to imbalance and vibration. Also ensure the fan on the underside of the mower is free from any residue.

Do not use a water jet or pressure cleaner to hose down the mower. The engine should remain dry. All other parts should be wiped with a rag. Do not use solvents, thinners or any other aggressive cleaning materials.

Wheel axles and wheel hubs

Should be lightly greased after every 25 hours of use or at least once every year. Remove wheel cap, screw and pull off wheel. Remember the sequence of the parts for the correct assembly later.

Blade

Special tools, such as a torque spanner, are required for the correct fitting of a blade. For safety reasons, we recommend to have

the blade balanced, sharpened, replaced and fitted only by an authorized service center. The following notes are directed only at service centers.

Replacing the blade

Disconnect the spark plug cap to change the blade and wear safety gloves. Only use original SOLO Spare Parts. The part number of the mowing blade should correspond with the part number quoted in the parts list. Never install a non-original blade.

Use a pin to block the movement of the blade (picture 14A). The blade screw has a standard RH thread. To undo the blade screw, use a 21mm socket or a spark plug spanner or an allen key 8mm, 5/16". Ensure the friction clutch system is fitted in the correct sequence (picture 14). Tighten the blade screw with a torque wrench at 45 Nm (4.5 mkp).

Damaged Blades

If, despite all care and precaution, the blade hits an object, stop the engine and disconnect cap from spark plug/. Ensure the blade stopped spinning and tilt the mower to the side. Inspect the blade and mower for any damage (picture 11). Deformed and bent blades should not be straightened.

Replace all damaged parts. After hitting an obstacle, the mower should be checked by an authorized workshop. Before using a mower, always check the blade is not damaged and is tight. If required, replace the blade and have the mower checked. Never operate the mower with a damaged blade. This will cause vibration and lead to further damage.

Blade Sharpening

The cutting edge can be re-sharpened with a metal file. However, it is recommended that

any re-sharpening work is done by a service center. Experts will ensure the blade is sharpened evenly and balanced properly. Do not sharpen the blade beyond the stamped mark on the flade (see picture 14).

Oil level check

Caution: Engine oil influences the performance and life expectancy of the engine. Never run the engine without or without sufficient oil. This may lead to severe engine damage. Choose the required oil viscosity according to air temperature and altitude. Refer to the specific section in the engine manual.

Checking of oil level:

1. Place the mower on even ground
2. Unscrew oil filler cap (pos. 14) and wipe dipstick.
3. Place dipstick back into filler pipe.
4. Remove dipstick, hold horizontally and read oil level which has to be between "max." and "min." markings.

Changing oil (Briggs + Stratton 4-cycle engines)

The engine may be drained via the oil drain screw (pos.10) or the oil filler opening. To reach the drain screw, both blade and fan wheel have to be removed (picture 14B). Observe the maintenance guidelines in the separate engine manual.

On HONDA OHC engines, the oil should be changed by authorized service centers only.

When draining via the oil filler opening (pos. 10), tilt the mower -with empty fuel tank and with warm engine- slowly to the side while the filler cap is still tightly in place. Wait a few minutes. Then remove the filler cap and collect the old oil in a suitable container. Dispose of the use oil according to local regulations or take to a re-cycling place.

After the oil change, wash hands with soap and water.

Maintenance of Air Filter

A dirty air filter (pos. 10) reduces engine efficiency by restricting free air flow to the carburetor. Frequent checking and cleaning, especially in dusty and dirty conditions, is a necessity.

Caution: Never clean air filter in petrol or with flammable liquids. This may lead to fire or explosion. Also refer to the separate section in the engine manual.

Important Note:

The time and duration when mowers can be operated may be subject to local regulations. These may vary from location to location. Please check with your local authorities.

Noise is damaging. To avoid gradual hearing loss with continuous prolonged mower use, we recommend the wearing of ear protectors.

Maintenance and repair: Maintenance and repair of modern motorized devices, as well as their safety-relevant assemblies, require qualified, specialized training and a workshop equipped with special tools and test devices.

Thus SOLO recommends that you have a specialized SOLO workshop carry out all work that is not described in these operating instructions. Your SOLO specialist has the required training, experience, and equipment at his disposal to provide you with the most cost-effective solution and can help you in many ways with advice and service.

Replacement parts: Dependable operation and the safety of your device also depend on the quality of the replacement parts that you use. Use only original SOLO replacement parts.

Only original parts come from the production of the device and thus guarantee the highest possible material quality, dimensional accuracy, function, and safety. Original replacement parts and accessory parts are available from your dealer. He also maintains the requisite replacement part lists to determine the required replacement part numbers, and he is constantly provided with information concerning detail improvements and innovations in the replacement part offering.

Please note as well that guarantee performances from SOLO are not possible if parts other than SOLO original parts are used.

Guarantee: SOLO guarantees problem-free quality and will assume the costs for defect remediation by replacing the defective parts in the case of material or manufacturing defects that occur within the guarantee period after the date of purchase.

Please note that specific guarantee conditions apply in some countries. Ask your sales person if you have any questions. As vendor of the products he is responsible for the guarantee.

We request your understanding that no guarantee can be assumed for damages due to the following:

- Non-compliance with the operating instructions. • Neglecting required maintenance and repair work. • Damages due to improper carburetor adjustment. • Normal wear and tear. • Obvious overload through persistently exceeding the upper performance limits. • Using non-approved tools and cutting fixtures. • Using non-approved cutting bar and chain lengths in the case of chain saws. • The use of force, improper handling, misuse, or accident. • Damages caused by overheating due to dirt build up on the ventilator casing. • Intervention by non-specialized persons, or improper repair attempts. • The use of unsuitable replacement parts or parts other than SOLO original parts to the extent that they cause damage. • Using unsuitable fuel or fuel that has been stored too long. • Damages that can be traced to implementation conditions from the rental business.

Cleaning, care, and adjustment work are not recognized as guarantee performances. All guarantee work must be carried out by a SOLO dealer.
