Frequently Asked Questions - JM1 STEBA

How to make yogurt with the Steba JM1?
Pour milk into the jars (you can add a starter culture or use plain yogurt as a starter). Place the jars in the machine, close the lid, set the timer (usually 8-12 hours) and press the start button. The machine maintains a constant temperature of 40-45 °C.
How long does it take to make yogurt?
The fermentation time varies from 6 to 15 hours depending on the desired consistency. For standard yogurt, 8-10 hours is sufficient. The longer the time, the more firm and tangy the yogurt will be.
Can I use plant-based milk?
Yes, you can use soy, almond, or oat milk. However, the result may be less firm. It is recommended to add a thickener like agar-agar or cornstarch.
How to clean the jars?
The jars and lids are dishwasher safe. You can also wash them by hand with soapy water. Avoid abrasive sponges to prevent scratching the plastic.
What to do if the yogurt is too runny?
Extend the fermentation time by 1 to 2 hours. You can also use whole milk or add powdered milk for a thicker texture. Make sure the jars are tightly closed.
Does the machine turn off automatically?
Yes, the Steba JM1 has an automatic shut-off after the programmed cycle ends. It then switches to keep warm mode for a few hours.
Can I make Greek yogurt?
Yes, after fermentation, strain the yogurt in a sieve lined with a clean cloth for several hours to remove the whey. You will get a thick and creamy yogurt.
Are the jars microwave safe?
The plastic jars provided are generally not microwave safe. Check the symbol on the jars. If you want to heat the yogurt, transfer it to a microwave-safe container.
Where to find replacement jars?
You can purchase replacement jars directly from Steba or authorized dealers. Make sure they match the JM1 model (capacity 150 ml).
Does the machine make noise?
No, the Steba JM1 operates almost silently. You will only hear slight clicks when the timer starts.
