OBH Nordica Ice cream maker
Before use
Before the ice cream maker is used for the first time, read the instruction manual carefully and save it for future use.
Check that all parts (including the extra ice bowl) have not been damaged. Remove the detachable parts from the ice cream maker as follows:
- Remove the mixing paddle from the lid/the motor part by pulling off the paddle.
- Remove the lid from the motor part by slightly pushing the two plastic rods (lock rods) connecting the lid and the motor part and simultaneously pull off the lid.
Clean all parts as described in section "Cleaning and maintenance". Wipe off the parts thoroughly and assemble as follows:
- Attach the lid to the motor part by positioning the two small holes in the lid abreast of the two plastic rods on the lower side of the motor part and press the lid over the plastic rods. You will hear a click once the lid has been correctly positioned on the motor part.
- Now press the mixing paddle into position at the lower side of the motor part. You will hear a click when the paddle has been correctly positioned on the motor part.
The ice cream maker is now ready for use.
How to use the ice cream maker
- Before making ice cream, put the ice bowl in the freezer for at least 8 hours and preferably up to 24 hours.
- Prepare the ice cream mixture. Note: Minimum mixture is 170 ml, maximum mixture is 320 ml
- It will be an advantage to put the mixture in the refrigerator for cooling before pouring it into the ice cream maker.
- Attach the mixing paddle to the lid and the motor part.
- Take the frozen bowl from the freezer and pour the mixture into the bowl. Important: The whole amount of the mixture is not necessarily to be used. Do not exceed the max amount of 3,2 dl (320 dl), even though the amount of the mixture is bigger.
- Place the lid with the motor part on top of the bowl. Note: Do not exceed the max amount of 320 ml
- Plug in the appliance.
- Switch on the appliance by pressing the on/off button on the motor part of the ice cream maker. Note: As soon as the mixture has been put into the bowl and the lid with the motor part has been positioned, turn on the ice cream maker.
- Let the ice cream maker run for 5-15 minutes. If the ice does not have a firm texture after 15 minutes, this can be due to various reasons, see section "Trouble-shooting".
- When the ice cream is ready, switch off by pressing the on/off button. Leave the ice cream in the bowl with the lid/motor part for about two minutes. This means that the ice freezes further. Note: The ice cream maker is not turned off automatically, but will be on until the on/off button is activated.
- Unplug. The texture of the ice cream should be firm, but still creamy.
- Remove the lid from the bowl, when the paddle has come to a full stand-still. You can eat the ice cream directly from the bowl. In order to avoid any damage of the bowl, only use plastic or wooden utensils in the bowl. If the ice cream is not eaten right away, put it in a plastic container and freeze it. Do not use the ice cream bowl for this purpose.
Overheating
The ice cream maker comprises a thermostat to ensure a long life. The thermostat is activated if the motor is overcharged. If the thermostat is activated, unplug the appliance and wait for about 20 minutes before switching on the appliance again.
To achieve the best result let the motor cool for about 5 minutes before you make the second bowl of ice cream. This is to be sure that the motor has been sufficiently cooled and does not stop during the making of the second bowl of ice cream.
Good advice to obtain the best possible result
- Be sure that all parts are clean when making the ice cream.
- Freshly made ice cream tastes best. The fresh taste will weaken after a few days in the freezer.
- Some ice cream mixtures are very soft and creamy, and in such cases we recommend that you put the ice cream in the freezer for an hour or two before serving in order that the ice cream is not melting right away. This is in particular a good idea, if the ice is served with a hot topping.
- Never freeze the ice cream, once it has been defrosted.
- Always use fresh ingredients for the ice cream.
- Chocolate chips, nuts etc, should not be added to the mixture until the ice cream has been stirred in the maker for at least 5 minutes or until the mixture is firm and has started to freeze. When chocolate and nuts have been added, make sure that the mixing paddle still gets to the bottom of the bowl.
- The final result is a smooth and soft-ice looking product.
Note: Home-made ice cream will not have the same texture as manufactured ice cream.
- If you keep the ice cream bowls in the freezer, they will always be ready for making ice cream.
- In order to get the best result, always freeze the bowl deeply. Set the freezer at -18 °C).
- In connection with aqueous recipes, the ice mass may freeze within just a few seconds after pouring. Make sure to start the appliance right after you have poured the ice cream mixture.
- The firmness of the ice cream depends on the recipe, the room temperature and the temperature of the ingredients.
- According to some recipes, the ice mixture needs pre-cooking. In such case, the mixture should be made at least one day ahead in order that it can cool off completely before putting it into the ice cream maker. If the mixture has not been sufficiently cooled, it will not be possible to freeze it.
- Do not use the bowl from the freezer if it has not been completely frozen.
- Never heat the bowl.
- Do not use the bowl if it has got a crack.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Always unplug before cleaning.
- Remove the mixing paddle from the lid/motor part.
- Separate motor part and lid.
- Wipe the motor part with a damp cloth. Never immerse the motor part into water or other liquids and do not rinse it under running water.
- Clean the lid, the mixing paddle and the ice bowls in warm washing-up liquid and wipe thoroughly. The lid and the mixing paddle may be washed on the top shelf of the dish washer.
Trouble-shooting
| Problem Possible cause | |
| The ice cream is not firm after 15 minutes | - The ice cream bowl has not been in the freezer long enough to achieve the best result. (Leave the bowl in the freezer at least 8 hours or preferably overnight).- The freezer is not sufficiently cold. The temperature shall be at least -18 °C- The bowl is overfilled. Max: 320 ml.- The ingredients are too hot / have room temperature.- The ice cream bowl has been in room temperature for more than 5 minutes prior to use.- The freezer has been opened too many times during the "freezing process" of the bowl.- The bowl is covered by a thick layer of ice. REMEMBER to wipe the bowls thoroughly after washing before putting them back into the freezer. |
| The ice cream maker stops before the ice cream is ready | - Chocolate chips, crushed nuts etc. were added too early. The ice should be put in the ice cream maker for at least 5 minutes or until the mixture is firm or has begun to freeze before adding the ingredients.- The chocolate bits, the crushed nuts etc. are too big, which means that the mixing paddle gets stuck.- Do not add more than one cup of these ingredients. |
| The ice cream bowls have been scratched | - Using metal utensils may scratch the ice cream bowls. We recommend that you use only plastic or wooden utensils in the ice cream bowls. |
| The ice cream is too stiff - If the ice cream | is kept in the bowls in the freezer for a while, the ice cream gets very hard and it can be difficult to take it out of the bowls. Let the ice cream defrost for a couple of minutes to become softer. |

Vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips
Vanilla ice cream (see recipe above)
Note: It is important not to add the chocolate chips until the ice has reached the desired texture. Make sure that the chocolate chips are not too big as this could make it difficult to mix the ingredients.
Recipes that require some preparation and which we therefore recommend that you make a day or a few hours ahead.
Vanilla ice cream
2 yolks
35 g sugar
1/2 a vanilla pod
1 dl low-fat milk
