- Specialized high resolution video and SD-SDI distribution
- Distribution of component video, RGBS, and other multi-channel formats using multiple VM-80Vs operating in parallel

2 Getting Started

We recommend that you:

  • Unpack the equipment carefully and save the original box and packaging materials for possible future shipment
  • Review the contents of this user manual

Kramer VM-80VN - Getting Started - 1

Go to http://www.kramerav.com/downloads/ to check for up-to-date user manuals, application programs, and to check if firmware upgrades are available (where appropriate).

2.1 Achieving the Best Performance

To achieve the best performance:

  • Use only good quality connection cables (we recommend Kramer high-performance, high-resolution cables) to avoid interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables)
  • Do not secure the cables in tight bundles or roll the slack into tight coils
  • Avoid interference from neighboring electrical appliances that may adversely influence signal quality
  • Position your Kramer VM-80VN away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust

This equipment is to be used only inside a building. It may only be connected to other equipment that is installed inside a building.

2.2 Safety Instructions

Kramer VM-80VN - Safety Instructions - 1

Warning: Use only the Kramer Electronics power supply that is provided with the unit

Warning: Disconnect the power and unplug the unit from the wall before installing

2.3 Recycling Kramer Products

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC aims to reduce the amount of WEEE sent for disposal to landfill or incineration by requiring it to be collected and recycled. To comply with the WEEE Directive, Kramer Electronics has made arrangements with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of waste Kramer Electronics branded equipment on arrival at the EARN facility. For details of Kramer's recycling arrangements in your particular country go to our recycling pages at http://www.kramerelectronics.com/support/recycling/.

3 Overview

The VM-80VN is a high-performance distribution amplifier for composite or SD-SDI signals. It can be configured as a 1:4 DA for s-Video (Y/C) signals and a 1:8 DA for CV or SD-SDI signals. It has controls to compensate for signal losses inherent in long cable runs.

More specifically the VM-80VN features:

• High bandwidth - 330MHz (-3dB)
• Level (gain) and EQ (peaking) controls
- Dual-mode to configure as either a 1:8 (composite) or 1:4 (s-Video) DA
- Internally selectable video AC/DC Coupling
• Companion unit to the VM-80A Audio DA
- Desktop size where 2 units can be rack mounted side-by-side in a 1U rack space with the optional RK-1 adapter

4 Connecting the VM-80VN

Kramer VM-80VN - Connecting the VM-80VN - 1

Always switch off the power to each device before connecting it to your VM-80VN. After connecting your VM-80VN, connect its power and then switch on the power to each device.

To connect the VM-80VN as illustrated in the example in Figure 2:

  1. Connect up to two video sources (for example composite video players) to the CH1 IN and CH2 IN BNC connectors of the VM-80VN.
  2. Connect up to 8 acceptors to the CH 1 OUT (up to 4) and CH 2 OUT (up to 4) BNC connectors.
  3. If a 1:8 operation is needed, press the rear button marked 1:8. If not, release the button for 2x1:4 operation.
  4. If looping is needed, release the 75 rear termination switch. If looping is not needed, press the switch in to the 75 position.
  5. If 1:8 operation is selected, one of the termination switches should always be in the released state and the other according to looping requirements.
  6. If necessary, adjust the trimmers on the front panel of the machine to achieve best results.
Level: To compensate for the loss of brightness due to the attenuation of voltage levels in long cable runs. Adjust while looking at the display device to achieve natural brightness.
EQ: To compensate for the loss of sharpness due to the attenuation of high frequencies in long cable runs. Adjust while looking at the display device for natural detail.
  7. Connect a mains power source to the socket on the rear panel of the VM-80VN.
  8. Operate source, acceptors and the VM-80VN machine.
