Introduction

The PCI4S954PW 4-Port PCI Serial Card (with Power Output) turns a PCI slot into 4 RS232 (DB9) serial connections and enables compatible devices to draw power from the serial ports.

Suitable for many RS232-powered serial applications, this PCI serial card offers a selectable 5V or 12V power option capable of power output using pin 1, 4, 8 or 9, allowing you to configure the card to suit the requirements of your powered RS232 devices.

A flexible solution for adding serial ports to full-sized, or small form factor systems, the 4-port serial card includes both low and full profile brackets while the included breakout cable helps to avoid cluttered connections.

• PCI enabled computer system with available PCI expansion slot
• Computer power supply with available LP4 Molex power connector
- Microsoft® Windows® XP/ Server 2003/ Vista/ Server 2008 R2/ 7 (32/64-bit) / 8 (32/64-bit) or Windows CE 5.0, or Linux® kernel 2.4.x/ 2.6.x

Installation

WARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card by its edges and not the gold connectors.

Jumper Configuration

Each serial port has a set of jumpers that are used to configure the voltage and on which pin the power is output. The ports can also be configured to not output any power and function as a standard serial port.

Hardware Installation

1. Turn your computer off and any peripherals connected to the computer (i.e. Printers, external hard drives, etc.). Unplug the power cable from the rear of the power supply on the back of the computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.
2. Remove the cover from the computer case. Refer to documentation for your computer system for details.
3. Locate an open PCI or PCI-X slot and remove the metal cover plate on the rear of the computer case.
4. Gently insert the card into the open PCI or PCI-X slot and fasten the card's bracket to the rear of the case.

NOTE: If installing the card into a small form factor/low profile system, replacing the pre-installed full profile bracket with the included low profile installation bracket may be necessary.

1. OPTIONAL: If using power over serial, connect an LP4 Molex power connector from the computer power supply to the LP4 Molex connector on the card.

2. Place the cover back onto the computer case.

3. Connect the 4 Port breakout cable to the large connector on the card.

4. Insert the power cable into the socket on the power supply and reconnect all other connectors removed in Step 1.

Driver Installation

Windows XP/ Server 2003/ Vista/ Server 2008 R2/ 7 / 8

1. Upon starting Windows, if the "Found New Hardware" wizard appears on the screen, cancel/close the window and insert the included Driver CD into the computer's CD/DVD drive.
2. On the CD browse to the folder "PCI_IO\ PCI_IO\OXuPCI952_954\Windows"
3. Run Setup.exe and install the drivers
4. Restart computer to complete the installation.

Verifying Installation

From the main desktop, right-click on "My Computer" ("Computer" in Vista/7), then select Manage. In the new Computer Management window, select Device Manager from the left window panel.
