Frequently Asked Questions - PEXUSB3S400 StarTech.com

What operating systems are supported by the PEXUSB3S400?
The card supports Microsoft Windows XP (32/64-bit), Server 2003 (32/64-bit), Vista (32/64-bit), Server 2008 R2, 7 (32/64-bit), and 8 (32/64-bit). For other operating systems, it may work with generic drivers but is not officially tested.
Do I need to connect the SATA power connector?
The SATA power connector is optional. It is required only if you need to provide up to 900 mA per port to bus-powered USB devices (e.g., external hard drives) or if you experience connectivity issues. Without it, ports supply up to 500 mA per port (USB 2.0 standard).
Can I install the card in a PCI Express x16 slot?
Yes, the card is designed for a PCI Express x4 slot but is backward compatible with x8 and x16 slots. It will work at x4 speed in those slots.
Does the card require driver installation?
For Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, and 7, drivers are provided on the included CD. For Windows 8, the driver installs automatically via Windows Update. The latest drivers are also available at www.startech.com/downloads.
How many USB 3.0 ports does the card provide?
The card provides four independent external USB 3.0 Type-A ports. Each port operates at full 5 Gbps bandwidth without sharing, unlike hub-based solutions.
What is the maximum power per USB port?
With the SATA power connector connected, each port can supply up to 900 mA. Without it, each port supplies up to 500 mA (standard for USB 2.0).
Is the card compatible with USB 2.0 devices?
Yes, the card supports USB 3.0 revision 1.0 and is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) and USB 1.1 devices.
What should I do if my computer does not detect the card?
Ensure the card is properly seated in a PCI Express slot and that power is connected if needed. Check Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers for the Renesas/NEC USB 3.0 controller. If not detected, try reinstalling drivers from the CD or StarTech.com website.
Can I use the card in a low-profile computer case?
Yes, the card comes with a low-profile bracket that can replace the standard full-profile bracket, allowing installation in small form factor systems.
What is the warranty period for this product?
The PEXUSB3S400 is backed by a 2-year StarTech.com warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Free lifetime technical support is also provided.

Introduction

The PEXUSB3S400 PCI Express x4 USB 3.0 Card (with SATA Power) adds 4 independent external USB 3.0 ports to any PCI Express x4-enabled computer system. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 provides up to 5 Gbps of data bandwidth, while remaining backward compatible with existing USB 2.0 devices at 480Mbps.

With each port being independent, full bandwidth is available per port, instead of shared between ports. This allows for maximum transfer rates if multiple devices are connected.

Using a “stacked” port layout that places the ports one on top of the other, more ports are able to fit into a smaller space. This 4-port PCIe x4 USB 3.0 adapter enables all four USB 3.0 ports to be external facing, while still allowing the card to fit into a small form factor/low profile computer system.

Plus, with a built-in SATA power connector, each USB port can provide up to 900mA of power to devices that draw power from a host bus connection (500mA for USB 2.0) by connecting to your computer power supply.

The PEXUSB3S400 USB 3.0 PCIe x4 card is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Installation

WARNING! PCI Express cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI Express card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI Express card by its edges and not the gold connectors.

Hardware Installation

  1. Turn your computer off and any peripherals connected to the computer (i.e. Printers, external hard drives, etc.). Unplug the power cable from the rear of the power supply on the back of the computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.
  2. Remove the cover from the computer case. See documentation for your computer system for details.
  3. Locate an open PCI Express x4 slot and remove the metal cover plate on the rear of the computer case (Refer to documentation for your computer system for details.). Note that this card will work in PCI Express slots of additional lanes (i.e. x8 or x16 slots).
  4. Insert the card into the open PCI Express slot and fasten the bracket to the rear of the case.

NOTE: If installing the card into a small form factor/low profile system, replacing the pre-installed full profile bracket with the included low profile installation bracket may be necessary.

  1. OPTIONAL: Connect a 15-pin SATA power connector from the computer's power supply to the SATA power connector on the card. This is only required if using the ports with bus-powered USB devices (no external power adapter) or if experiencing connectivity issues.

  2. Place the cover back onto the computer case.

  3. Insert the power cable into the socket on the power supply and reconnect all other connectors removed in Step 1.

Driver Installation

Windows XP/Server 2003/Vista/7

NOTE: The latest driver is available from www.startech.com.
