PREPARATION FOR USE

Unpacking and Set Up

• This carton contains the main unit, two speakers, and a remote control handset. Carefully remove all the components from the carton and remove all packing materials form the components. Make sure nothing is accidentally discarded with the packing materials.
• Save the carton and packing materials, if possible, in the unlikely event that this unit ever needs to be returned for service. Using the original carton and packing material is the only way to properly protect the unit from shipping damage.
• Remove any descriptive stickers or labels from the front panel of the main unit. Do not remove any labels or stickers that may be affixed to the back panel of the main unit or the speakers.
• This system was shipped with a “dummy CD” transit protection card in CD player. The card was inserted to prevent the CD player mechanisms from moving during shipping and handling. It must be removed and discarded before you can load your own CD. Press the ▲ OPEN/CLOSE position to open the CD door. Remove the “dummy CD” and discard it. Then press the ▲ OPEN/CLOSE position again to close the CD door.
• Unwind the AC power cord on the back of the main unit and extend it to its full length.
• Unwind the FM lead wire antenna on the back of the main unit and extend it to its full length.
• Unwind the speaker cables on the backs of the speakers and extend them to their full length.

Placement Of The System

The system should be placed on a stable, level surface such as a table, shelf, or stand, convenient to a 120V 60Hz AC outlet, out of direct sunlight, and away from sources of excess heat, dust, moisture, or vibration.

The speakers may be separated from the main as far the wires allow for maximum stereo separation, or they may be placed to the immediate left and right of the main unit. However to avoid interfering with the operation of the CD door the speakers should not be placed directly against the main unit.

Protect Your Furniture

This model is equipped with non-skid rubber 'feet' to prevent the product from moving when you operate the controls. These 'feet' are made from non-migrating rubber material specially formulated to avoid leaving any marks or stains on your furniture. However certain types of oil based furniture polishes, wood preservatives, or cleaning sprays may cause the rubber 'feet' to soften, and leave marks or a rubber residue on the furniture. To prevent any damage to your furniture we strongly recommend that you purchase small self-adhesive felt pads, available at hardware stores and home improvement centers everywhere, and apply these pads to the bottom of the rubber 'feet' before you place the product on fine wooden furniture.

Power Source

This system is designed to operate on 120VAC 60Hz house current only. Connecting this system to any other power source may cause damage to the system and such damage is not covered by your warranty.

Note: The system has polarized AC plug with one wide blade and one narrow blade. The plug will only fit into matching polarized AC outlets.

This is a safety feature to reduce the possibility of electric shock. If the plug will not fit in your AC outlet, you probably have an outdated non-polarized outlet. You should have your outdated outlet changed by a qualified, licensed electrician.

Do not file the wide blade on the plug, or use an adapter to make the plug fit into your outlet. This defeats the safety feature and could expose you to electric shock.

Remote Control Battery

The remote control requires one "button-type" 3-volt Lithium battery, included. To extend the life of the original battery we have inserted a small clear plastic spacer tab between the Lithium battery and the battery terminal.

You must remove this battery spacer tab before you can use the remote control.

To remove the tab, pull it in the direction of the arrow in the illustration as shown.

When the operation of the remote control becomes intermittent or unsatisfactory, replace the original battery with a new 3-volt Lithium battery.

The battery number is CR2025 or equivalent.

To replace the battery, slide the battery holder out of the remote control as shown in the following illustration.

Remove the original battery from the holder and install a new CR2025 battery with the “+” side facing up as shown in the illustration. Then slide the battery holder back into the remote control.

Dispose of the original battery properly. It should not be thrown into a fire as the battery may explode if incinerated. It should not be left around where small children or pets might play with, or swallow it. If the battery is accidentally swallowed, contact a physician immediately.

Connecting The Speakers

Note: Always connect the speakers before switching the power 'On', and never operate the system without the speakers properly connected.

The speaker cables and the speaker terminals are color-coded.

• Connect the Red wires to the Red terminals.
• Connect the Black wires to the Black terminals.
• Connect the Right speaker to the (R) terminals, and the Left speaker to the (L) terminals.

If the wires are connected incorrectly the sound will be "muddy" or distorted.

To make the connections, push the levers downward to open the terminals. Insert the bare ends of the speaker wires into the terminal openings and then push the levers back to their original positions to close the terminal openings and lock the wires in place.

Auxiliary Input Jacks

This system includes AUX R/L Jacks. These jacks allow you to connect external audio equipment to this system and listen to the sound from the external equipment through the speakers of this system.

Examples of the types of external equipment that may be connected are: a cassette deck; the audio outputs from a VCR or DVD player; a personal cassette player, MP3 player, MD player, or a personal hard-disc audio jukebox device such as an iPod®.

Connect the audio output jack(s) of the external audio equipment to the AUX R/L jacks on the back panel of this system.

CONNECTION CABLES ARE NOT INCLUDED.

You may leave your external device permanently connected to this system if you wish. It is not necessary to disconnect the external device in order to listen to the Tuner or CD player in this system.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

- Make sure that you have fully extended the FM antenna wire.

- Make sure that you have removed the battery spacer from the remote control handset.

- Make sure that the system is connected to an AC outlet that is always "live". Do not connect the system to an AC outlet controlled by a wall switch.

General Controls

Most of the main functions of this system can be operated by the controls on the front panel of the main unit, or by the buttons on the remote control handset. If a specific function can only be operated by the remote handset, or by the front panel controls, this will be clearly indicated in the instructions.

When operating this system with the remote control handset make sure that the IR (Infrared) transmitter on the front of the remote handset is pointed at the remote sensor on the front panel of the main unit.

The effective operating range of the remote control is approximately 15 feet. Please note that bright sunlight or room lighting may interfere with the remote control operation. If the remote is not operating properly try reducing the brightness of the room or moving closer to the main unit. If this does not solve the problem, it may be time to change the remote control battery.

X.BASS Control (Bass Boost)

To increase the bass response, press the X.BASS button on the main unit or on the remote control.

The XBASS indicator appears in the display.

Press again to cancel the X.BASS and return to normal bass response.

The XBASS indicator goes 'off'.

MUTE Button

Press the MUTE button on the front panel or the remote control to shut off the speakers temporarily, for example, to answer the telephone.

The sound stops and the MUTE indicator appears in the display.

Press the MUTE button again to cancel the mute function and restore the sound. The MUTE indicator disappears.

The mute function will also be canceled automatically by pressing the VOL. DOWN (−) or VOL. UP (+) buttons.

Stereo Headphone Jack

This system includes a stereo PHONES jack on the front panel of the main unit. You may connect a set of stereo headphones, not included, to this jack for private listening without disturbing others.

The main speakers are automatically shut off when headphones are connected to the PHONES jack. Make sure that the plug from your headphones is fully inserted into the headphone jack. If the plug is not fully inserted the sound may be intermittent, or you may only hear sound from one side of the headphones.

IMPORTANT: To prevent hearing damage always set the volume control to a low level before you connect the headphones. Then connect the headphones, put them on, and very gradually increase the volume to a comfortable listening level. Remember that CDs may contain both very soft and very loud passages. Adjust the volume to a comfortable level using a louder passage, so that you always know what the maximum level will be.

Setting The Clock

Note: The clock can only be set at AUX mode, or when power is 'Off'.

1.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button.

"12 H" will begin flashing in the display indicating that the clock is set for "American" 12-hour time.

Press either the ▶ or ◀ button to change the clock format to "European" 24-Hour time if desired.

The display will change from "12 H" to "24 H" and vice versa.

2.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button. The Hour digits will begin flashing.

3.) Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons to set the display to the correct Hour, AM or PM.

4.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button again. The Minute digits will begin flashing.

6.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button once more.

PM 2:30

The colon “:” begins flashing and the clock starts to run.

Notes: The correct time will always appear on the display in AUX mode and when power is 'Off'.

Listening To The Radio

1.) Press the ⏻ STANDBY button to turn the unit 'On'.

If necessary, press the FUNCTION button to select the Tuner mode.

The main display turns 'Oi. and shows FM 87.5 MHz.

2.) Press the ■ STOP/BAND button to switch between FM and AM bands if necessary.

3.) Tune to the desired frequency as follows:

- Manual Tuning

Repeatedly press the ▶ or ◀ buttons until the frequency of the desired station appears on the display.

- Automatic Tuning

Press and hold the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons until the display begins to move, then release the buttons. The tuner will search up or down the band for the next strong station and stop on that station.

Repeat this procedure until the tuner stops on your desired station.

Use the Manual Tuning method to tune in weak or distant station that cannot be tuned automatically.

4.) If you tuned to an FM Stereo station the "STEREO" indicator will appear in the display.

5.) Adjust the VOLUME and X.BASS controls as desired.

6.) When you are finished listening press the ⏻ STANDBY button to return to the Standby (Power Off) mode.

The display lighting becomes dimmer and the correct time reappears.

Hints For Better Reception

FM: The FM lead wire antenna on the back panel should be extended to its full length. You may also have to vary the direction of this antenna until you find the position that provides the best reception.

AM: The AM bar antenna is inside the cabinet of the main unit. You may need to change the position of the main unit until you find the position that provides the best reception for your favorite AM stations.

Pre-setting Stations In The Tuner Memory

This system includes a 20 station preset memory. You can store up to 10 FM stations and 10 AM stations in the tuner memory for immediate recall.

The procedure for storing stations in memory is as follows:

1.) Follow step 3 under Listening To The Radio on page 16 to select the first station you wish to memorize.

Example: FM 103.5 MHz.

2.) When the desired station appears on the display press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button.

“P 1.” indicator appears and the “MEMORY” indicator flashes in the display.

3.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button again to enter the desired station in preset memory number 1. The "MEMORY" indicator stops flashing.

4.) Tune to the next station you wish to memorize.

Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button and then press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button to advance the preset memory number from "P 1". to "P 2.".

Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button once more to enter your station in preset memory number 2.

5.) Repeat step 4 using the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button to select a different preset memory number each time until you have entered up to 10 FM stations in the tuner preset memory.

6.) Press the ■ STOP/BAND button to switch to the AM band and follow the same procedure to enter up to 10 AM stations in the tuner preset memory.

Auto Preset Function

This model includes an Auto-Preset feature which you can use to automatically enter 10 strong FM and AM stations in the tuner preset memory.

Note: This feature is useful if you live in a rural area with a limited number of stations. However if you live in a major metropolitan area with many strong stations, do not use the Auto-Preset feature. It will memorize the first 10 strong stations it encounters and these will probably not be the same 10 stations that you would select if you were memorizing stations manually.

To use the Auto-Preset feature, turn the unit 'On', select the Tuner function and the desired band.

Depress and hold the "PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO." button until the tuner display begins to move, then release the button.

The tuner will start searching up the band and it will automatically enter the first 10 strong stations on the selected band in the 10 preset memories. The display will indicate which station is being entered in each of the 10 memories.

After the Auto-Preset feature memorizes 10 stations, the tuner returns to preset memory number 1.

Recalling Preset Stations

Turn the unit 'On' and select the desired band.

Press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button on the top panel repeatedly to scroll through the preset memories until the display shows the desired station.

Changing Preset Stations

To change any preset station memory select the desired band and tune to the new station you wish to memorize.

Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button and then press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP buttons to display the channel number you wish to change.

Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button again to enter the new station in the memory. The new station is memorized and the previous station is deleted from the memory.

Playing Compact Discs

Note: Although this portable CD player can read CD-R and CD-RW discs, in addition to normal CDs, however the playability of CD-R/RW discs may be affected by the type of software that was used to create the discs, as well as the quality and condition of the blank media you are using. 100% playability cannot be guaranteed. This is not an indication of a problem with the player.

Normal Playback

1.) Press the ⏻ STANDBY button. The main display turns 'On'.

2.) Press the FUNCTION button select CD mode. The display will show two dashes “--”.

3.) Open the CD door by pressing the ▲ OPEN/CLOSE position on the CD door. Place a CD on the center spindle with the printed label side facing up. Close the CD door.

4.) The disc will spin for a few seconds as the player reads the disc.

Then the disc will stop and the display will show the total number of tracks on the disc.

5.) Press the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback on track 1.

Track number "0 1" appears in the display and the Play ▶ indicator comes 'On'.

6.) Adjust the VOLUME and X.BASS controls as desired.

7.) Playback will continue until the last track has played then the disc stops and the Play ▶ indicator goes 'Off', and the display will show the total number of tracks on the disc.

To stop playback before the disc ends press the ■ STOP/BAND button.

8.) If you are finished listening open the CD door and remove your disc.

9.) To listen to the Tuner or AUX, press the FUNCTION button as desired, or press the ⏻ STANDBY button to turn the power 'Off'.

PAUSE Control

To pause momentarily during CD playback press the ▶II PLAY/PAUSE button on the top panel again.

The sound stops and the Play indicator flashes but the disc continues to spin.

Press the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button again to cancel the Pause mode and resume normal playback.

The sound resumes at the same point on the disc and the Play indicator stops flashing.

SKIP/Search (▶) Controls

• During playback press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons repeatedly to skip forward or back to higher or lower numbered tracks. Playback will start at the beginning of the selected track.
• To search within a track for a specific musical passage depress and hold the ▶ button.

The player will search rapidly forward or backward as long as the buttons are depressed. When you hear the desired passage release the buttons and normal playback will resume at that point.

Note: The volume is automatically reduced during high speed music search.

- To start playback from a specific track load your disc as usual and wait until the display shows the total number of tracks.

Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons repeatedly until the desired track number appears in the display then press the ▶▶ PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback on the desired track.

RANDOM Playback

This feature allows you to play all the tracks on a disc in random order.

Load the disc as usual and wait until the display shows the total number of tracks.

Press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button three times.

The RANDOM indicator appears in the display.

If necessary, press the ▶PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. The tracks will be played in random order continuously.

To cancel the Random mode, press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button until the RANDOM indicator disappears. Random mode can also be canceled by pressing the ■ STOP/BAND button, opening the CD Door, or switching to the Tuner function.

REPEAT Playback

You can program the player to continuously repeat a single track or the entire disc. The Repeat mode can be selected while the disc is playing or while the disc is stopped.

Single Track Repeat

Select the track to be repeated and then press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button once.

The REPEAT indicator flashes.

If necessary, press the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. The selected track will be repeated continuously.

All Tracks Repeat

Press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button twice.

The REPEAT indicator remains "On".

If necessary, press the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. The entire disc will be repeated continuously.

To cancel Repeat playback press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button until the REPEAT indicator goes 'Off'.

Repeat Playback mode may also be cancelled by switching to other function, or shut the power 'Off'.

Programmed Playback

You can program up to 20 tracks on a disc to playback in any desired order. You may also program a specific track to play several times within the same program.

Note: The player cannot be programmed while a disc is playing. If a disc is playing press the ■ STOP/BAND button to stop playback before you begin the programming steps below.

1.) Press the FUNCTION button to select the CD mode, insert your disc in the player, close the door, and wait until the total track number appears in the display.
2.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button once. The MEMORY indicator begins flashing in the display. "P 0 1" appears briefly then "0 0" flashes.

≥MEMORY P01 → ≥MEMORY 0.0

3.) Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ button to select the first track to be programmed.
Example: Track 08.

4.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button once again to enter the track "08" in program memory number "P 0 1".

"P 0 2" appears briefly then "0 0" flashes again in the display, indicating that you may now select a track to be entered in program memory number "02".

MEMORY P02 → MEMORY 0.0

5.) Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons to select the next track to be programmed. When the desired track number flashes in the display press the PROG (PROGRAM)/MEMO. button again to enter that track in the program memory.

6.) Repeat Step 5 until you have entered up to 20 tracks in the program memory.

When the memory is full, the “- -” indicator flashes in the display.

7.) To begin programmed playback press the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button.

The display will show the first programmed track and playback will begin on that track.

The MEMORY indicator remains "On".

After the last programmed track has played the player stops but the programmed tracks remain in the memory.

To play the programmed tracks again, press the the ▶I PLAY/PAUSE button.

To cancel the programmed sequence from memory, press the ■ STOP/BAND button at Stop mode, or open the CD door.

The MEMORY indicator disappears.

Programmed Repeat Playback

You can use the Program and Repeat features together to continuously repeat a programmed sequence of tracks.

• First, program the desired tracks according to Steps 1 through 7 on pages 24 and 25.
• When Programmed Playback begins, press the PLAY MODE/MEMO UP button twice to activate the All Tracks Repeat feature.

- The REPEAT indicator appears in display and all the tracks in your programmed sequence will be repeated continuously.

To cancel Programmed Repeat Playback press the ■ STOP/BAND button until both the MEMORY and REPEAT indicators go 'Off'.

ALARM Function

You can use the alarm function to wake you to the Tuner, or your favorite CD.

To adjust the Wake Up time:

1.) Press the DISPLAY button until ALARM indicator is flashing on the display.

2.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button Within 3 seconds.

The Hour digits will begin flashing.

3.) Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons to set the display to the correct Hour, AM or PM.

4.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button again. The Minute digits will begin flashing.

5.) Press the ▶▶ or ◀◀ buttons to set the display to the correct Minute.

6.) Press the PROG(PROGRAM)/MEMO. button once more, the Wake Up time is set.

The clock will return to correct time in 3 seconds.

7.) Press the ALARM button to activate or deactivate the Alarm function.

Wake To Tuner

Tune to the desired radio station and adjust the volume to the level you want to hear in the morning when the alarm comes on.

Press the ⏻ STANDBY button to shut the system 'Off'.

At the selected wake up time the radio will turn 'On'.

The ALARM indicator flashes in the display.

It will continue for one hour and then shut off automatically.

To stop the radio alarm sooner press the ⏻ STANDBY button to shut 'Off'.

Wake To CD

Important: This model includes an automatic default to the Radio alarm if the player cannot read the disc that you selected for wake-up. If the player cannot read the disc's Table of Contents (TOC), it assumes that the disc is either defective or inserted incorrectly, and the system automatically defaults to the Radio alarm to make sure that you wake up on time. The TOC of CD-RW discs may take longer to read than normal CD's. Therefore if you are trying to wake to a CD-RW disc and you are awakened by the Radio alarm instead, this is because the TOC on your CD-RW disc took too long to read.

This is normal and not an indication of any problem with your unit.

Load the desired CD, begin playback and adjust the volume to the desired level.

Press the ■ STOP/BAND button, then ⏻ STANDBY button to shut the system 'Off'.

At the selected wake up time the CD will begin to play. It will continue for one hour, or until the end of the disc, and then shut off automatically.

To stop the CD alarm sooner, press ■ STOP/BAND button, then the ⏻ STANDBY button to shut 'Off'.

Notes: The Alarm will automatically repeat each day at the selected Wake Up time as long as the ALARM indicator appears on the display.

To cancel the alarm, press the ALARM button until the ALARM indicator disappears on the display.

SLEEP Timer

This system includes a programmable Sleep Timer that allows you to fall asleep to between 10 and 90 minutes of music and then shuts the power 'Off' automatically.

To operate the sleep timer

1.) Turn the system 'On' and operate either the Tuner or CD function as usual.

2.) Adjust the VOLUME control to the desired level. Remember that the level you select for the sleep to music function is the same level you will hear when the timer turns the system on in the morning.

3.) Press the SLEEP button on front panel.

The display will show "90" indicating that the sleep timer will shut the power off after 90 minutes.

Continue pressing the SLEEP button to decrease the amount of sleep timer operation: 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 0 minutes.

4.) After a few seconds the Sleep Time display disappears and the normal Tuner or CD display returns.

The SLEEP indicator remains in the display.

When the Sleep Timer counts down to "00", the power shuts off automatically.

Notes:

• You can shut the unit off manually before the Sleep Timer counts down to "00" by pressing the ⒶSTANDBY button at any time.
• Remember that if you are falling asleep to CD you will also wake to CD, and if you fall asleep to the Tuner you will also wake to the Tuner.
• If you are falling asleep to CD the system will only operate until the CD ends. If you set the Sleep Timer for 90 minutes but your CD is only 45 minutes long, the music will stop after 45 minutes.

Auxiliary Operation

To listen to an auxiliary audio source connected to the AUX R/L jacks on the back panel of this unit (refer to page 8).

Press the FUNCTION button to select the Aux function.

The AUX indicator appears in the display.

Operate the external device as you would normally. When you hear the music from your external source adjust the VOLUME and X.BASS controls of this system as desired.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Compact Disc Care

- To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges.

- Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off the disc's recorded surface with a soft cloth. Unlike conventional records, compact discs have no grooves to collect dust and microscopic debris, so gently wiping with a soft cloth should remove most particles. Wipe in a straight line from the inside to the outside of the disc. Small dust particles and light stains will have absolutely no effect on reproduction quality.

- Clean the disc periodically with a soft, lint-free, dry cloth. Never use detergents or abrasive cleaners to clean the disc. If necessary, use a CD cleaning kit.

- Never write on or affix labels to the surface of compact discs.

Care Of The Cabinet

If the cabinet becomes dusty wipe it with a soft dry dust cloth. Do not use any wax, polish sprays, or abrasive cleaners on the cabinet.

Caution

Never allow any water or other liquids to get inside the unit while cleaning.
