BASICALLY
PowerSpot devices are portable low power electric generators fed by external combustion, cooled by water or air, and practically maintenance and failure free.
The PowerSpot range is based in the generation of electricity through a shift in temperature, in such a way that if the base is heated with any kind of flame and the superior part is cooled with water or air, it generates profitable energy, which power varies according to the components of each device, the kind of flame and its intensity. All devices can charge phones, rechargeable batteries and tablets. They can also produce intense light in diverse points and they are all maintenance free. All PowerSpot devices work with any kind of combustible and are robust and portable.
The PowerSpot peripheral devices have been selected and designed to withstand the toughest conditions. For example: the PowerSpot light bulb can be immersed in water for a certain period of time and keep emitting light, they can be smashed and they keep working, and they can be activated from 3 to 30 watts.
PowerSpot devices generate energy at all times, at any time and place. Without failure or maintenance.
POWERSPOT LANYARD
Lanyard is a small electric generator able to power and charge several devices, that will not need any replacement parts or maintenance.
Lanyard is a particularly robust and compact device that can generate an electrical current between 10 and 20W (depending on each version), which is enough to charge any phone or tablet; it also can recharge batteries, feed up to twenty LED light bulbs connected in parallel (especially the ones made by PowerSpot, which are adjusted to the capacity of this device). Its small dimensions (10 cm diameter and 6 cm high) make it easy to carry in a rucksack or even in the pocket of your trousers. It is, therefore, a "personal" power generator that allows the individualized administration of power at any time and place, no matter how remote.
This device to work requires a constant supply of heat (either gas, kerosene, alcohol, wood, hot iron, a vitroceramic hob etc.) and the supervision of the water level. Submitted to a flame of 2,000w the water takes about half an hour to evap-
orate, but if it is placed over an alcohol burner flame the liquid can take around an hour to evaporate. An intense flame will only be necessary when you need to light up several light bulbs, but to charge a mobile phone or tablet a small flame will be enough.
It is essential to take into account that it can never be left to dry. Although it is extremely robust and has been submitted to intense resistance test, the cooling liquid can never be left to dry, the evaporation of it will make the semiconductors on its interior to melt. To the effects of the warranty, the knowledge of the conditions that this device have been submitted to, and the protection of the user in relation to manufacturing defaults, there is a thermolabile label inside that will indicate if at any time the device has been left on the flame without liquid.
The average consumption is 25 gr of gas, kerosene or alcohol per hour. Therefore, a bottle of one litre of kerosene will feed a Lanyard during 20 hours at full performance (e.g. charging an iPad), or almost
80 hours of normal use (e.g. charging a smartphone or batteries).
There are three versions of Lanyard: Lanyard Basic, Lanyard+ and Lanyard Extended.
Lanyard Basic yields 10W, being able to charge smartphones, minitablets and batteries, in addition to activate 100% a PowerSpot 'Water' LED bulb, with the light output equivalent to a 80W incandescent bulb, (although you can power ten of these at various points). You need a flame of approximately 2,000W to operate it at 100%, although with a spirit burner flame, or with the small flame of a portable gas burner, it is perfectly able to develop its potential. It is ideal for charging batteries or smartphones, and to light a small space such as a tent or a mountain cottage.
Lanyard+ produces 20W and, being of identical dimensions of the previous one, it provides double the power than the Basic, enabling the user to obtain double efficiency with the same flame, as well as lighting up double the light bulbs or charging phones and tablets much faster and with lower consumption. This version also allows charging small electrical appliances such drink coolers, fans, portable radios etc.
Lanyard Extended is a Lanyard+ with an added screwing cylinder and several peripheral devices as described below. The extensor cylinder can be removed at any time to return the Lanyard+ to its basic reduced dimensions. This attachment can triplicate the time of use without assistance as well as include and protect in the same recipient a PowerSpot light bulb, an extension cable with socket, a 5V 2A USB converter and connection cables for the portable devices.
PowerSpot provides – as a peripheral – this extensor cylinder that can be fitted to any of its versions if, once bought, you desire to increase its capacities.
ADDRESSED TO:
Punctual needs of personal power supply. Lanyard has no comparison in the world as a personal power generator: It allows you to obtain power at any time, any place, with any combustible and it is small enough to fit in a pocket or rucksack and it is also totally failure free. Therefore, it is addressed to the necessities of leisure as well as logistics and military needs.
Its use as a phone and small appliance charger in isolated locations is irreplaceable. Either if you wish to charge an iPhone on the top of a mountain; recharge the batteries of your camera or GPS in isolated woods; light up a camping tent or a hotel room with precarious electricity supply, PowerSpot Lanyard will do. During the day, night, under the rain, in a cave or even in a rainforest.
PowerSpot Lanyard allows you to dispense with heavy, delicate, inefficient and tiring portable lighting systems. It allows you to forget – or not – the dependency on combustibles often difficult to obtain, such as bottled gas, solid fuel tablets, kerosene etc.
Besides, the PowerSpot light bulb can be immersed temporarily in water and still emit light, it can roll down the mountain and still work, it can be terribly smashed and still shine. And if an elephant from the Borneo rainforest tramples down on it, it can still be repaired and, if not at 100%, it will still work after just a small repair.
INSTRUCTIONS OF USE
- Pour the non-flammable and non-toxic liquid in its interior (Preferably water, although it can be non-potable water).
- Place the device over a flame. Although a small flame from an alcohol or kerosene burner is enough, it will perform better if the flame comes from a gas burner. In any case, make sure it does not surpass the edges of the recipient. In the first place because it will exhaust unnecessarily the materials of the device, and in the second place because any flame that exceeds the Lanyard diameter will have no heating effect on its base.
-
Wait around two minutes. For mobile phones and rechargeable batteries, two minutes will be enough for the Lanyard to reach the desired voltage. In case of lighting up several LED bulbs, or charge a big tablet, its maximum performance will be obtained after five to ten minutes, and it will maintain it if the same heat is provided on its base and there is water inside the device.
-
Connect to the desired device. The experience will tell us what is the necessary flame. For small phones, this is surprisingly small (such as the smaller flame from an alcohol burner or the equivalent to eight candles). For maximum performance it will be necessary the medium flame from a portable gas burner. Lanyard Basic will need a bigger flame than Lanyard+ and its charge capacity, no matter how you increase the flame, will be limited. For example, it might not be able to charge a big tablet, although it can charge a smaller one.
-
Supervise the level of water and NEVER let it dry when it is placed over a flame. In case you forget, it will be irreparably damaged, so it is necessary to not leave it unattended. In the case of Lanyard Extended, you have triple the time than with Lanyard Basic. With the necessary flame to charge an iPhone, for example, the liquid can last up to three hours, but it is imperative not to let it dry out.
MAINTENANCE
Do not keep in the neoprene cover when hot. Do not screw the top if it is still wet. Do not close the top too tight.
APPLICATIONS
A. Mobile phones, tablets and rechargeable batteries: A small USB converter must be connected to the device 12V outlet. Lanyard Basic will charge with no problems from small mobile phones to rechargeable batteries and small tablets. Lanyard+ can charge several devices simultaneously, as well as big tablets. (Maybe a conventional USB hub will be necessary). The kind of charge is identical to the one taken from a usual domestic electric socket.
B. Lighting: The LED-“Water” light bulbs designed by PowerSpot light up with a very low voltage, adapted to Lanyard Basic. If you use one (or two), each will shine with the same intensity than an incandescent 80W light bulb, and can be connected in parallel, at any distance and up to ten light bulbs (10 Lanyard, 20 Lanyard+). This allows lighting up simultaneously several rooms in the same house (the more light bulbs are added, the lower they will shine), or taking light – through a very simple wiring – to further
points at the same time and with minimum consumption. If you wish to produce light with Lanyard Basic it will be necessary to use low voltage light bulbs designed by PowerSpot. If you are using Lanyard+ you can use either PowerSpot "Air" or any commercial 12V LED light bulbs.
C. Electrical Appliances: Today there are multiple electrical appliances that work through a USB connection to the computer. Any of those appliances will work perfectly if connected to the Lanyard+. Also, small 12V devices can also be fed as long as their required power does not exceed a peak power of 20W. For example, small radios or portable televisions. For this, we will use the 12V socket. However, given the huge range of products existing in the market, PowerSpot does not guarantee its performance and suggest testing them before their purchase.
PRECAUTIONS
D. Never leave the device to dry out when it is over a flame. The thermolabile label inside will indicate if this occurs.
E. Never unscrew the screws on the base. The thermoelectric plates located inside will irreversibly be damaged.
F. Never immerse the device in water. Although the base is airtight, the joint could suffer fracture when being submitted to high temperatures and allow the filtering of water, which will damage the electrical components.
G. Do not cool down suddenly, by either immersing the base in water or pouring ice or cold water inside. The sudden contractions will make the metal bend, therefore cancelling its power generator capacity.
H. Do not allow the connector cable to be in contact with the flame. Although it is made of fireproof materials, its resistance to fire is limited and the heat generated by the flame could melt the protective plastic cover of the cables inside.
I. The user must ensure that the heat source used complies with the relevant regulations of quality and safety.
SUGGESTIONS
Lanyard can work placed over hot surfaces such as a barbecue, a hot plate, a heater and a victroceramic hob. In fact, it requires less heat than a direct flame because these will dissipate heating regularly on the base of the device.
If placed over a stove it can charge mobiles, as long as the temperature of the surface reaches 120oC. However, given that each heater is different, it is necessary to test its capacity to activate the Lanyard in situ.
Over a vitroceramic hob it can work amazingly well. Although it looks like nonsense to use an electric hob to activate a power generator, Lanyard can be used if there is not another socket in the room.
If you use it over a barbecue it is better to place it over the griddle. It will provide several square metres of light in the open air through a simple electric installation.
Lanyard provides a 9W light point (around 800 lumens). However, it can slightly light up at least ten points, which is usually enough for a family house. Every time you add a light bulb the voltage will be reduced slightly, therefore you will have more light points but with lower intensity.
All PowerSpot thermoelectric generators can be connected in a series or in parallel, increasing therefore the total available power for the same circuit. If you wish to fit this kind of installation, PowerSpot offers the adequate peripheral cable.
Although the handle is made of steel and recovered with insulating material, you must be careful when touching it. It will not burn the skin but it might be very hot from the heat emitted by the recipient.
