Frequently Asked Questions - JVE40STSS GE

How do I clean the metal grease filters?

Soak and swish the filters in hot water and detergent. Do not use ammonia or abrasives. Rinse, shake dry, and replace. They can also be cleaned in a dishwasher.

How often should I replace the charcoal filters?

Replace charcoal filters every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage. Order Kit WB02X11000 from GE. Note: Do not wash or put in dishwasher.

How do I change the light bulbs?

Turn off power. Slide the lens cover horizontally and pull down. Grasp the bulb by the plastic base and unscrew. Replace with a GE 15W CFL with GU24 base (part WB08X10064).

Can this hood be used without ducting to the outside?

Yes, you can use it in recirculating mode by installing optional charcoal filters. Note: In recirculating mode, it is not ENERGY STAR certified.

What type of ductwork is required for outside venting?

Use 3 1/4 x 10 rectangular metal duct. Maximum duct length is 65 equivalent feet. For round duct, use a transition adaptor with at least 7 diameter.

The fan is not working. What should I check?

Check if the fuse is blown or circuit breaker tripped. Also ensure the filters are not excessively soiled. If the problem persists, call service.

How do I install the hood under a cabinet?

Refer to the installation instructions. Remove filters, knock out appropriate duct and wiring openings, mount the hood using keyhole slots, connect ductwork and wiring, then replace filters.

What is the warranty coverage?

GE provides a one-year limited warranty from date of purchase, covering parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanship. Exclusions apply.

Why do the lights flicker or appear dim?

CFLs may flicker or appear dim on startup; this is normal. Allow a few minutes to warm up. If it persists, replace with a GE 15W GU24 lamp.

How do I clean the stainless steel surface?

Use warm sudsy water or a stainless steel cleaner. Always wipe in the direction of the grain. Avoid steel wool pads.

Throughout this manual, features and appearance may vary from your model.

Rocker Switch Controls

FAN Control

Press the rocker switch at the top to turn the fan on HI and at the bottom to turn it on LOW. The center position is OFF.

Continuous use of the fan system while cooking helps keep the kitchen comfortable and less humid. It also reduces cooking odors and soiling moisture that create a frequent need for cleaning.

LIGHT Control

Press the rocker switch at the bottom to turn the light ON while cooking. Press the rocker switch at the top to turn the light OFF.

Care and cleaning of the vent hood.

Be sure electrical power is off and all surfaces are cool before cleaning or servicing any part of the vent hood.

If it ever becomes necessary to replace the metal grease filters, they may be ordered from your GE supplier.

Reusable Metal Grease Filters

The hood has 2 metal reusable grease filters.

The metal filters trap grease released by foods on the cooktop. They also help prevent flaming foods on the cooktop from damaging the inside of the hood.

For this reason, the filters must ALWAYS be in place when the hood is used. The grease filters should be cleaned once a month, or as needed.

To remove, press the filter locks back and pull the filters down and out.

To replace, insert the rear filter tabs in the frame slots at the back of the opening. Push the filters up and lock them into place.

To clean the grease filters, soak them and then swish them around in hot water and detergent. Don't use ammonia or ammonia products because they will darken the metal. Do not use abrasives or oven cleaners. Light brushing can be used to remove embedded dirt. Rinse, shake and let them dry before replacing. They may also be cleaned in an automatic dishwasher.

NOTE: Before cleaning, make sure the charcoal filters, if present, are unclipped and removed. See the Charcoal Filters section.

The charcoal filters are clipped inside of each reusable metal grease filter.

Charcoal Filters (on some models)

The charcoal filters cannot be cleaned. They must be replaced.

Order Kit no. WB02X11000.

This kit can be ordered from your GE supplier.

NOTE: Charcoal filters are not included with the hood. They must be ordered from your GE supplier.

If the model is not vented to the outside, the air will be recirculated through disposable charcoal filters that help remove smoke and odors.

The charcoal filters should be replaced when they are noticeably dirty or discolored (usually after 6–12 months, depending on hood usage).

NOTE: DO NOT rinse, or put charcoal filters in an automatic dishwasher.

Note: If the hood in installed for recirculation mode, it is not ENERGY STAR® certified.

Painted Surfaces (on some models)

To clean the hood surface, use a hot, damp cloth with a mild detergent suitable for painted surfaces. Use a clean, hot, damp cloth to remove soap. Dry with a dry, clean cloth.

Do not use steel-wool pads or other abrasive cleaners. They will scratch the surface. Wipe with a clean, hot, damp cloth after using cleansers.

Stainless Steel Surfaces (on some models)

Do not use a steel wool pad; it will scratch the surface.

To clean the stainless steel surface, use warm sudsy water or a stainless steel cleaner or polish. Always wipe the surface in the direction of the grain. Follow the cleaner instructions for cleaning the stainless steel surface.

Hood Lights

WARNING:

For installation, handling and disposal precautions, refer to the fluorescent lamp packaging literature.

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not connect electrical power to the hood without both lamps in place.

CAUTION:

- Do not touch the hood lamps when they are on. They may be hot enough to cause injury.

To prevent injury from broken lamps, handle lamps carefully and do not operate hood without lamp lens covers in place.

This hood requires two Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) with a GU24 base (included), maximum 15 watts.

To change the lamps:

When installing or replacing a lamp, make sure that power to the light has been turned off. Never allow a lamp to come into contact with water.

2 Remove the lens cover by sliding it in a horizontal direction and pulling it down and away from the hood.

3 Grasp the lamp by the plastic base portion of the lamp and unscrew it.

4 Replace with energy saving GE 15W Compact Fluorescent Lamp with GU24 base GE Service Part: WB08X10064.

DUCTWORK REQUIREMENTS

WARNING – TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, USE ONLY METAL DUCTWORK.

NOTE: Read the ductwork sections only if you do not have existing ductwork. If you have existing ductwork, skip to the "Damage" section and proceed.

The venting system must exhaust to the outside.

This hood can be vented vertically through upper cabinets or horizontally through an outside wall. Ductwork is not included.

Exhaust connection:

The hood exhaust has been designed to mate with standard 3 14 " × 10" rectangular ducting.

If a 7" round duct is required, a rectangular-to-round transition adaptor must be used*. Do not use less than a 7" diameter duct.

Maximum duct length:

For satisfactory air movement, the total duct length of a 314 " × 10" rectangular should not exceed 65 equivalent feet.

NOTE: It's important that ducting be installed using the most direct route and with as few elbows as possible. This ensures clear venting of exhaust and helps prevent blockages. Also, make sure dampers swing freely and nothing is blocking the ducts.

Elbows, transitions, wall and roofcaps, etc., present additional resistance to airflow and are equivalent to a section of straight duct longer than their actual physical size. When calculating the total duct length, add the equivalent lengths of all transitions and adaptors plus the length of all straight duct sections. The charts on the following pages show you how to calculate total equivalent ductwork length using the approximate feet of equivalent length of some typical ducts.

* IMPORTANT: If a rectangular-to-round transition adaptor is used, the bottom corners of the damper will have to be cut to fit, using the tin snips, in order to allow free movement of the damper. Equivalent lengths of duct pieces are based on actual tests and reflect requirements for good venting performance with any hood.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTION

⚠ WARNING – Improper grounding can result in a risk of electric shock.

This appliance must be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current.

This appliance is qualified for use with a power cord having a grounding wire with a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded.

Consult a qualified electrician or service technician if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if doubt exists as to whether the appliance is properly grounded.

Do not use an extension cord. If the power supply cord is too short, have a qualified electrician install an outlet near the appliance.

1 CHOOSE VENT OPTION

Determine the vent option that your installation will require from the following choices:

The outside vent exhaust option that your installation requires will determine the hood knockouts that you will use.

IMPORTANT: If the hood is to be installed in a recirculating, non-vented ductless manner, do not knock out any vent openings in the hood. Only an electrical access hole will be knocked out of the hood.

Outside top exhaust

2 REMOVE FILTERS

Remove the protective shipping film from the edges of the metal grease filters. Press the filter locks back and lift the filters out. Set them aside.

3 REMOVE WIRING COVER FROM THE JUNCTION BOX

Remove the wiring cover from inside the hood. Set the cover and its mounting screw aside.

4 REMOVE WIRING KNOCKOUT

Remove either the top or the back wiring knockout as needed and install an approved strain relief clamp.

5REMOVE DUCT KNOCKOUT(S)

If recirculating, non-vented ductless see note below and skip to Step 7 and proceed.

Using a flat blade screwdriver, remove the appropriate duct knockout(s) from the top or back of the hood.

3 ^1/4 " x 10" Rectangular vertical discharge.

Remove top rectangular duct knockout only.

3½" × 10" Rectangular horizontal discharge. Remove rear rectangular duct knockout only.

NOTE: If the hood is to be installed in a recirculating, non-vented ductless manner, order charcoal filters, kit number WB02X11000 for 30" hood models. These kits can be ordered from your GE supplier. Skip to Step 7C and proceed.

NOTE: If the hood in installed for recirculation mode, it is not ENERGY STAR® certified.

6 FOR 3 14 " x 10" RECTANGLE DUCTED DISCHARGE INSTALLATIONS:

Attach exhaust adaptor/damper over knockout opening with two exhaust adaptor screws. Make sure damper pivot is nearest to top/back edge of hood. Remove tape from damper flap.

NOTE: The exhaust adaptor/damper can be installed up to 1 inch on either side of the hood center to accommodate off-center ductwork. In extreme off-center installations, one end of the duct connector may need to be trimmed to clear the electrical cable clamp.

7 MARK HOLES

Select the vent option that your installation will require and proceed to that section:

A. Outside top exhaust (Vertical duct-3½" x 10" Rectangular)

- Use the diagram or the hood as a template and mark the locations on the cabinet for ductwork, electrical wiring and keyhole screw slots.

B. Outside rear exhaust (Horizontal duct-3 ^1/4 " x 10" Rectangular)

- Use the diagram or the hood as a template and mark the locations on the cabinet for ductwork, electrical wiring and keyhole screw slots.

Wood shims (recessed-bottom cabinets only)

C. Recirculating (non-vented ductless)

• Use the hood as a template and mark the locations on the cabinet for the electrical wiring and keyhole screw slots.
• Since the hood is to be recirculated (not to be vented outside), do not cut out any vent openings in the wall or cabinet bottom.

8 CHOOSE VENTING OPTION

The hood can be set to vent outside or to recirculate air back into the kitchen.

• To vent to the outside, refer to steps 5 and 6.
- To recirculate air into the kitchen, remove two screws securing the duct block off plate. Discard plate. Replace two screws.

Note: Hood is ENERGY STAR® certified only when it vents air to the outside.

9 FOR RECESSED-BOTTOM CABINETS ONLY

- If the cabinets have front, side or back trim, make 2 wood shims the width of the trim and attach them to the cabinet bottom recess on both sides. See Step 7 for marking locations.

10 CUT HOLES

Cut holes at marked locations for duct and electrical wiring. For the vertical duct, cut out 3/4" extra toward the front of the cabinet so you can move the duct freely when installing the hood. It may also ease installation by cutting the hole 10½" instead of 10".

11 RUN WIRES

Run the electrical wires through the wall or cabinet according to National Electrical Code and applicable local codes.

NOTE: DO NOT turn the power on until installation is complete.

12 OPTIONAL POWER CORD KIT JXHC1

Use only with range hood cord-connection kits that have been investigated and found acceptable for use with this model range hood.

For installation with a standard 3-prong, grounded wall outlet, Power Cord Connection Kit model JXHC1 must be used. This kit contains a power cord and the hardware required to connect it to the range hood. It is available at extra cost from your GE supplier. Follow the Installation Instructions packed with the kit.

NOTE: If using optional Power Cord Kit JXHC1, feed the power cord through the hole in the top cabinet while raising the hood. Loop any excess length of cord and tie away with a suitable tape or tie.

13 SCREW IN PARTWAY

Drive a mounting screw (from the hardware packet) partway into each center of the narrow neck of the keyhole slots marked on the cabinet bottom.

14 FEED IN WIRES

Lift the hood into position and feed the house wiring through the wiring knockout.

15 SECURE HOOD

Slide the hood back against the wall. Tighten the mounting screws. Be sure the screw heads are in the narrow neck of the keyhole slot.

16 CONNECT DUCTWORK TO HOOD

Use duct tape to make joints secure and air tight. Note: Illustration shows rectangular to round duct adapter.

17 INSTALL LAMPS

WARNING:

(Hg) - Lamp contains Mercury. Manage in accord with disposal laws. See www.lamprecycle.org or 1-800-435-4448.

For installation, handling and disposal precautions, refer to the fluorescent lamp packaging literature.

WARNING:

To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not connect electrical power to the hood without both lamps in place.

CAUTION:

Do not touch the hood lamps when they are on. They may be hot enough to cause injury.
To prevent injury from broken lamps, handle lamps carefully and do not operate hood without lamp lens covers in place.

This hood requires two Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) with a GU24 base (included), maximum 15 watts.

To change the lamps:

When installing or replacing a lamp, make sure that power to the light has been turned off. Never allow a lamp to come into contact with water.
2 Remove the lens cover by sliding it in a horizontal direction and pulling it down and away from the hood.
3 Grasp the lamp by the plastic base portion of the lamp and unscrew it.
4 Replace with energy saving GE 15W Compact Fluorescent Lamp with GU24 base GE Service Part: WB08X10064.

18 FOLLOW ELECTRICAL CODE

Complete the electrical wiring according to National Electrical Code and local codes.

NOTE: This hood must be permanently grounded. Connect house wiring (120 VAC) to hood wiring.

19 CONNECT WIRING

Connect house black to hood black wire, house white to hood white wire, and house ground to hood green/yellow wire. Securely tighten the strain relief clamp onto the house wiring.

20 REPLACE WIRING COVER

Replace the wiring cover.

21 REPLACE FILTERS

The installation is complete. Turn on power at service panel, and test for proper operation.

TROUBLESHOOTING CHECKLIST

If the hood seems to be operating at high speed when the control is not set on high, or if ventilation seems inadequate, check the following:

☐ Knockouts not removed from hood.
☐ Damper blade not opening.
☐ Reduced airflow because the duct is too small or the duct length is too long.
☐ The duct is blocked.
□ Undersized or restrictive wall or roof cap.

Fan continually cycles off and on	The motor is probably overheating and turning itself off. This can be harmful to the motor. Filter may be excessively soiled.	Replace the filter if it is soiled. If it is not soiled, or if replacing the filter does not solve the problem, call for service.
Compact Fluorescent Lamp appears dim on start up	This is normal for Compact Fluorescent Lamps especially on first installation.	Allow lamp to run for several minutes. If this warm up time does not solve the problem replace the lamp.
Compact Fluorescent Lamp briefly flickers on start up	This is normal for Compact Fluorescent Lamps especially on first installation.	Allow lamp to run for several minutes.If this warm up time does not solve the problem replace the lamp.
After replacing one lamp, the new lamp appears to be a temperature different color	The replacement lamp may have a different color3000K instead of 2700K.The replacement lamp may be from a different manufacturer.
