Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of this A850 Vari-Focal HD Security Camera. A highly versatile surveillance camera with manually adjustable zoom and focus to suit any environment. It has a variable focal length of 2.8 - 12mm and offers up to 4x optical zoom on your target area. This lets you adjust the field of view from 24° - 64° for the perfect frame. The 720p (1 Megapixel) resolution is perfect for close up detail such as license plates, facial detail, clothing and more. With the latest infrared cut filter, it has amazing night vision to 65ft/20m and excellent clarity in low light.

Important note - All jurisdictions have specific laws and regulations relating to the use of cameras. Before using any camera for any purpose, it is the buyer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations that prohibit or limit the use of cameras and to comply with the applicable laws and regulations.

Important safety instructions

1) Make sure product is fixed correctly and stable if fastened in place.
2) Do not operate if wires and terminals are exposed.
3) This camera can only be used in combination with Swann's DVR4-4400, DVR8-4400 or DVR16-4400 digital video recorders.
4) Use a small flat-head screwdriver to adjust the zoom and focus settings. Do not overexert when adjusting both settings.

Warning - Modifications not approved by the party responsible for compliance could void user's authority to operate the equipment.

Choosing a location for your Camera

With a vari-focal camera, you have some flexibility on where the camera can be mounted. Some things to consider when choosing a location -

1) What you want to monitor and where you'll get the best view of it.
2) How you're going to connect the camera to your DVR; remember that cables and connections should be kept out of the weather.
3) It's recommended to mount your cameras at an elevated position to keep out of harm's way.
4) Make sure your camera has minimal sky in it as the light in daylight can make the foreground of the image darker.
5) Think about the most likely way a potential offender may approach your home.
6) The camera's casing is resistant to water and tampering. However, the cable and connector are vulnerable and require protection.

7) Even though the camera is weather and water-resistant, prolonged exposure to adverse weather conditions such as sunlight or excessive moisture, may eventually damage the internal components of the camera and adversely affect its performance.
8) When running your cable, try to avoid bending it at sharp angles.
9) Don't put your cable near live electrical wiring. AC electricity generates radio "noise" which can interfere with the signal from your camera.
10) A vari-focal camera allows you to adjust between its top and bottom limits on its view angle. This means that you have the ability to manually set both the view angle and level of zoom. Have a scenario where you need to zoom in on a gate or other access point? Use the 12mm setting (25° and about 4x zoom). Need a wide angle view? Go with 2.8mm (64°). Need something in between? Try 6mm (43°) or 9mm (30°).

Connecting your Camera

  1. Connect the video output and power input connection on the camera to the corresponding connections on the video & power cable.

Mounting your Camera

text_image Technical diagram of a mechanical component with numbered parts labeled 1, 2, and 3

The camera has three points of articulation. The most obvious is the hex screw secured elbow joint in the centre of the stand [2]. This one is pretty obvious and straight forward – using an Allen key, loosen the hex screw and adjust to the position you want (up or down). Tighten the hex screw again to secure in place.

The second point of articulation (1) is the radial joint where the neck of the stand is attached directly to the camera. To adjust this joint, loosen the hex screw on each side. This enables you to rotate the camera left or right so no matter what direction the camera is facing, your images will be oriented correctly. Tighten the hex screw again to secure in place. To rotate the camera left or right (3), loosen the hex screw on each side of the base then tighten again to secure in place.

Zoom - To zoom in use a flat-head screwdriver and turn the connection anti-clockwise to the desired viewing angle. Turn clockwise to zoom out.

Focus - After setting the desired viewing angle, use the focus connection to sharpen the image.
