Frequently Asked Questions - Thecus D16000 Origin Storage

How do I install hard drives in the Thecus D16000?
Power off the unit, unlock and pull out each drive tray, install the drive (2.5/3.5-inch SATA) using screws, then reinsert and lock the tray. The drives are hot-swappable, but it's safer to power off when installing multiple drives.
What is the maximum capacity supported?
The Thecus D16000 supports up to 16 SATA drives. With current 16TB drives, the maximum raw capacity is 256 TB. Actual usable capacity depends on RAID configuration.
How do I set up RAID on this NAS?
Access the web interface (ThecusOS), go to Storage Management, select RAID, and follow the wizard. You can choose from RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, or JBOD. Ensure all drives are inserted before creating a RAID array.
Can I upgrade the network to 10GbE?
Yes, the Thecus D16000 has an expansion slot for a 10 Gigabit Ethernet card (optional). You can purchase and install a compatible 10GbE adapter to increase network throughput.
How do I perform a factory reset?
Press and hold the reset button on the front panel for about 10 seconds until you hear a beep. This will restore the default administrator password and network settings. Data on the drives is not affected.
What backup solutions are available?
The Thecus D16000 supports local backup to USB drives, remote backup via rsync or FTP, and cloud backup to services like Amazon S3. The ThecusOS also includes a built-in backup utility.
How do I access the NAS from a remote location?
Enable remote access in the ThecusOS web interface under DDNS or VPN. You can set up a Dynamic DNS account or use a VPN server built into the NAS to securely access files from anywhere.
What is the power consumption of the D16000?
Typical power consumption is around 200-300W with 16 drives spinning. The unit has dual 800W power supplies, but actual draw depends on drives and activity. Use the power management settings to schedule shutdowns.
How do I replace a failed hard drive?
Identify the failed drive from the LED indicator or software. While the unit is running, carefully remove the drive tray, replace the drive with a new one of equal or larger size, and reinsert. The RAID will automatically rebuild if configured.
Is the Thecus D16000 compatible with virtualization?
Yes, it supports iSCSI and NFS for virtualization platforms like VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. You can create datastores and use features like thin provisioning and snapshots.
