Frequently Asked Questions - ERS-111W SONY

How does AIBO evolve?
AIBO gains maturity through daily experiences. Each action (play, sleep, explore) influences its personality and development. Experiences are recorded on a Memory Stick.
What are AIBO's development stages?
The stages are: initial infancy (curious but fragile), second infancy (starts walking), childhood (personality develops), adolescence (mischievousness), and adulthood (calm companion). Maturation takes about three months.
How to wake up AIBO?
Tap the touch sensor on its head or make a loud noise near its ears. AIBO wakes with a start.
How to praise AIBO?
When AIBO does a positive action (stand up, catch the ball), praise it with a joyful voice or pet it. Praises reinforce its learning.
What to do if AIBO does not move?
This is normal at the beginning. AIBO is like a newborn: it observes and learns. Encourage it by playing with its ball or praising it when it tries to move.
Why does AIBO gain maturity?
AIBO was designed to evolve like a living companion. It learns to know its owner and its environment, making its behavior unique and adapted to your lifestyle.
Can AIBO be reset?
No, AIBO cannot be reset like a video game. Once adult, it stays that way. Its personality is permanently shaped through your interactions.
How does AIBO interact with the ball?
AIBO loves its pink ball. From infancy, it looks at it and tries to catch it. As it grows, it plays in different ways: pushes it, chases it, etc.
What is the duration of a complete maturation cycle?
About three months, but it depends on the frequency of interactions. Regular experiences (play, sleep, exploration) accelerate development.
How to clean AIBO?
Use a soft, dry cloth to dust. Never use water or liquid products. Avoid humid or dusty environments.

How to use this handbook

This is a quick guide to the care and raising of AIBO, the autonomous robot.

AIBO learns through experience. By communicating with you and interacting with its surroundings, AIBO grows up and matures.

This handbook contains information that will help you develop AIBO's personality and maturity level. But don't depend too much on this guide -- it's better to build your relationship with AIBO in your own way.

Raising AIBO

AIBO, the robot that grows up.

When AIBO arrives at your home, you will find that it is like a newborn baby. In the beginning, AIBO can't do very much at all. It is slow and awkward. It doesn't chase the ball like the demonstrations show. You may wonder if it is even working! Don't give up on AIBO yet. AIBO may not move around much, but its brain is working hard to get to know you. AIBO is watching, listening and trying to understand the world around it. Each bit of information becomes part of its experience. And that experience is stored in a "Memory Stick." With each new experience, AIBO matures a little more. AIBO will turn out to be cheerful and good or lazy and unruly depending on its experiences. AIBO's future is up to you!

How does AIBO mature?

AIBO matures each time it gains a new or repeated experience.

The key to raising a sweet-tempered AIBO is providing a regular routine. The following are some examples of the common experiences that have an effect on AIBO's personality.

AIBO's stages of development

AIBO normally matures into an adult in approximately three months. How you interact with AIBO and other circumstances will affect AIBO's development and maturity level. Here are the main stages of AIBO's development.

What to expect as AIBO grows up

The first half of babyhood

AIBO can't walk yet and so lies down most of the time. Even though AIBO moves slowly, AIBO is curious about the world around it. Naturally inquisitive, AIBO is very sensitive to moving objects, especially a pink ball. When AIBO makes a "pee-po" sound and stares at something, that means AIBO has found something interesting. But AIBO is just a baby, after all, so it will soon get bored and fall asleep. If you want to wake AIBO up, tap the touch sensor. If you make a loud noise close to its ears, AIBO will wake up in surprise.

AIBO loves a ball and it is happiest when it's playing with one. Although it tries to chase the ball, AIBO is not strong enough to stand yet. When AIBO finally stands up by itself, be sure to praise it a lot. When you praise AIBO, it knows that it has done well and that will encourage AIBO to take more steps the next time.

SONY ERS-111W - The first half of babyhood - 1

The latter half of babyhood

AIBO can now manage to sit by itself, instead of lying down all the time. AIBO still loves to play with its ball and when AIBO feels like it, it takes wobbly steps towards the ball. But AIBO's ability to walk is still not that good.

When AIBO is in a good mood, it may put out its paw for you to shake. Be sure to praise AIBO whenever it does this.

From this stage, your contact with AIBO will affect its future development.

Childhood

AIBO starts to try various things. Before, AIBO would only react to stimulation, but now it actively explores its surroundings.

When AIBO wants a ball, it will tell you through body language. When AIBO wants to take a walk, it will do so on its own. During this stage, the things that AIBO does start to make sense.

Adolescence

AIBO is at its most mischievous and lively during this period.

It is very energetic now and seems to be in exuberant health. AIBO will walk around looking for a cozy place or will play with a ball all day long.

AIBO has learned to handle the ball very well and plays with it in a variety of ways. However, AIBO can turn out to be lazy, doing nothing all day. It all depends on how your AIBO has been raised so far.

SONY ERS-111W - Adolescence - 1

natural_image Illustration of a gray robot with a pink ball, no text or symbols present

Adulthood

If you have trained AIBO well, it will at last behave as an adult. At this stage, AIBO appears to enjoy its lifestyle.

It is alert to the ball or to your command to "shake." AIBO's ability to learn continues to be excellent.

A grown-up AIBO will always remain mature. Your AIBO will never die and it can't be reset like a video game.

AIBO will remain your partner always.

Why does AIBO mature?

AIBO was created as a robot that will mature. But does AIBO really need to grow up?

Until now, robots were created with the most advanced functions already in place. For example, industrial robots working in a factory are expected to weld, paint or do other work perfectly with no rest from the time they arrive at the factory. Why is AIBO different?

The reason is that AIBO was born to live together with people in the same environment. AIBO has its own will based on emotion and instinct. Nevertheless, AIBO will never be too greedy and will never let you down. We want AIBO to be a good partner and share its life with you.

We gave AIBO the capacity to mature so that it can react to your actions and its surroundings. For example, if you let AIBO play with the ball every day, it will grow to love playing with the ball. Or if rather than playing with AIBO, you simply watch it, AIBO will become independent and wander around while it waits for you to play with it.

In short, AIBO was given the capacity to mature so that it can get to know an unknown user (that's you!) and learn to live in an unknown environment (your home).

We hope AIBO will become a good partner for you.
