Congratulations on purchasing your Thorens TEM 3200!
Your TEM 3200 features the latest generation of power amplifier design. Conventional amplifiers are built with complementary transistors of different conductivity (n-type and p-type). Instead of that the Thorens TEM 3200 employs a perfect symmetrical circuitry which uses extremely powerful n-type MOSFETs only. Voltage amplification is done by six matched tubes in the input stage. Thereby the TEM 3200 unites the benefits of tube and transistor amplifiers in a perfect and utterly new way. It sounds like a tube with the power of a huge transistor amplifier.
The whole product is “Made in Germany”, which guarantees highest sonic quality combined with a long lifespan.
Please take a few minutes to read through this manual. It contains important information that will help you to avoid damages and to ensure proper wiring with the rest of your system.

Unpacking and installation
Please unpack your Thorens Power Amplifier TEM 3200 carefully. We suggest that you save the cardboard and packing materials for later use.
The TEM 3200 is delivered in two packages, each containing one amplifier. Although both units show minor differences on the outside (different orientation of ventilation slots on top), there is no functional distinction inside: You may arrange them as you please.
Scope of supply: (each unit)
1 x Thorens TEM 3200
1 x Country-specific power cord
1 x Adapter for RCA
Please place your Thorens TEM 3200 on a firm, solid and level surface. It is important and vital to allow at least four inches of space behind and above the unit for adequate ventilation.

Do not obstruct the ventilation slots on the top (or on the bottom) of the unit or place objects directly over them.
Never expose the unit to either of the following conditions:
Locations near air ducts, radiators or other sources of heat or direct exposure to sunlight
Extremely cold locations
Locations subject to extensive dust, moisture, mechanical vibration, shock or poor ventilation
Locations very close to turntables to avoid hum pick-up
Connecting the TEM 3200
The TEM 3200 is a power amplifier designed to drive any passive HiFi-loudspeaker. To connect it to your HiFi-equipment you additionally need a preamplifier, such as the Thorens TEP 3800* to control inputs and volume. * available 2006
For safe amplifier operation, please use only speakers with impedance of more than 2 ohms! We recommend speakers with impedance of more than 4 ohms.

Switch off all units before wiring. Disobeying may cause damage to the speakers.

THORENS 1 2 3 4Audio input ①
As the electric circuit structure of the TEM 3200 is intrinsically sym - metrical there is only a balanced input jack. Connect this jack to the BALANCED PRE-OUTPUT jacks of your pre-amplifier. Make sure that the plug sits tight in the jack and keep in mind the pin configuration: (see next page)
Connecting the TEM 3200
Pin configuration:
Pin 1: Ground
Pin 2: Positive (non-inverted) signal
Pin 3: Negative (inverted) signal
Do not use a cord with different configuration!
To unplug the balanced XLR cord from the input jack, push the tab above the jack and unplug it.
With the RCA adapter shipped with this unit you can also use unbalanced RCA cords. The signal balancing is performed inside the TEM 3200 by an excellent signal transformer.
Speaker outputs ②
The TEM 3200 uses the outstanding loudspeaker terminals of WBT, Germany. These have been proven to provide perfect contact over many years in millions of sets.
Connect the positive input jack of your loudspeaker (usually marked red) with one of the red marked output jacks on the rear panel of the TEM 3200. You can choose either of them. Repeat these instructions for the negative jack.
You can insert the bare loudspeaker cable by loosening the knob, inserting the wire from the side and then tightening the knob again. You can do the same with spades at the ends of your cables or use banana plugs (they can simply be plugged in from the rear).
Always assure that the cables are fixed tightly and do not allow the wire to protrude and touch other terminals or wires!

This amplifier is floating at the output jacks. Never ground either one of the jacks.
Do not connect active subwoofers to the speaker outputs and do never short-circuit the output jacks or the loudspeaker wires when connected. The unit will be damaged severely!
Connecting the TEM 3200
The TEM 3200 offers the possibility of connecting the speakers in bi-wiring manner. Please ask your dealer about this issue and if bi-wiring holds benefits for your speakers.
AC power supply ③
Plug the power cord into the appropriate AC outlet on the wall or on a high-power extension cord. Do not plug it into the AC outlets of other equipment components or extension cords that can not endure the power consumption of the TEM 3200.

Do not pull out the power cord when the amplifier is switched on. The unit might be damaged.
Required line voltage
U.S.A. and Canada....115-120 V
Europe, Australia and Asia....220-240 V
Japan....100 V
Power consumption
See Specifications or type plate at the rear of the unit.

To prevent electrical shock do not use extension cords, receptacles or other outlets unless the contacts can be fully inserted.
Operating
Light switch ④
The Light switch controls the brightness of the blue front illumination unit for the THORENS sign. You can choose between low and high brightness by pushing the switch left or right.
- Front panel controls
Power button and indicator
Press this button to turn the power on, the blue THORENS power indicator will light up. Press again to turn off the power (the indicator becomes dark).
The TEM 3200 needs approximately 3 minutes until it is powered up and ready for use.
Important information for long-term usage
The TEM 3200 features an automatic bias control for all operating points, and all stages are DC-coupled. Therefore the amplifier has a quick power-up time and is fully operational after only a few minutes. It is unnecessary and not recommended to leave it turned on constantly. Long-term usage may cause early deterioration of tubes and thus shortens the product's life span. The increased power consumption poses an unneeded burden to the environment.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Remove dust by wiping the unit with a soft dry cloth. The chromium front-plate can be polished with a soft purpose-designed cloth. If necessary use a soft glass-cleaning detergent on a soft cloth. The wooden side-cheeks can be cleaned in the same way.
Never use benzine, thinner, alcohol or other volatile agents and avoid spraying cleaning detergents into the ventilation slots on the cover!
Tube servicing
The employed tubes – derived from military equipment – come with a regular life expectancy of more than 20 years (due to low power consumption and being driven by small signals only). Nevertheless, in case of malfunction or defect, original tubes will be available for replacement. All tubes are hand-selected and matched. Therefore only complete sets will be delivered (see our service and warranty conditions).
Never replace the tubes by similar or pin-compatible types. This will cause major damage!

RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. DO NOT OPEN!

No user-serviceable parts inside. Unauthorized opening, repair or modifications of the unit will result in loss of warranty.

Trouble shooting
Problem: Abrupt shutdown of the amplifier while blue THORENS writing is flashing.
Cause: The unit was highly overloaded, having the integrated overload protection turn off the amplifier to prevent damage.
Solution: Switch off the amplifier using the power button and find and remove the reason for the overload.
Possible sources are too high input signals (e.g. turning up to full volume on the preamplifier), a short circuit or an accidentally grounded speaker output (see p. 7, detail 2). Moreover, the unit turns off after an interruption of the power supply.
In any case, wait at least one minute before trying to restart the TEM 3200.
If the protective switch engages immediately after restarting, switch off the amplifier and contact your dealer or distributor.
Problem: The TEM 3200 doesn't power up or power-up seems to last forever.
Cause: To ensure a long tube life the TEM 3200 is fitted with a soft-start circuit. Tube heating and voltage are engaged very slowly while performing several parameter checks. This process, which may last up to 3 minutes, waits until all values are within the specifications until it activates the outputs.
If power-up takes notably more than 3 minutes, check whether the overload protection is enabled (see above). Otherwise, please contact your dealer or distributor.
Trouble shooting
Problem: Liquid or a small item has entered the case.
Solution: Immediately turn off the amplifier and disconnect the power cable. Contact your dealer or distributor.
If the amplifier fails, contact your dealer or distributor. Do not try to repair the unit yourself!
